Just did the last arms dealer mission. I shot the two ATP down and a couple of my bullets made the engine of the truck steam. I thought it's funny how that guy goes on another circle and decided to try to hop onto the truck. So I placed my own AT next to the road and climbed it - ready to jump on the truck which had to pass in front of me. It came and I jumped... and the driver didn't care - I drove around with him the entire circle  ;D ;D ;D (NO cheats involved!)

How cool is that!!!  :-X

Just goes to show you that the fun never ends in FC2 - you can experiment for months and not run out of material.  It's too bad we don't have a complete list in one place of fun things to try in FC2.

A question on your little escapade above Art.

As you went flying through the two CP's on that loop did the posted mercs see you and fire on you?

I think you've invented a new sport in FC2 offline play. Drive By shooting is a feasible pastime with this idea.  8)

Indeed - there are several long loops on the weapons dealer missions.  One I recall in Bowa on the eastern side of the map is a loop in which the trucks eventually stop and the mercs exit their vehicles to socialize.

It would be an interesting challenge to find a spot on any (or all) of the missions from which to jump onto the big truck and go for the ride through the countryside.  It would be great just to have someone else do the driving while you observe the scenery.  Then as mandru suggested, it would be great fun to pop a merc or two on your passage through the areas.  (I'm thinking of the post office loop here...  ;D)

mandru

Yeah!  :-X   :-X   :-X

Selecting just the right gear to leave a swath of hands free carnage.  8)

I'm liking that thought more and more!

As an added twist, it would be ultra cool to wait for the opportunity to fly a glider onto the big truck - would like to have a movie of that kind of adventure  :-X

Yeah, they did open fire. Not the GP you see in the pic though, that one I had cleared before I got on the truck. The second one however went on alert and started shooting. Funny thing, I had my M79 with me, and each time I fired upon the GP, my "driver" started swearing  ;D

Sparked by Art's latest run in with the weapons convoy big truck driver, I thought I'd try the same.  I'm at 12% on one of RedRaven's saved games (Marty) and have gone to the weapons dealer on the west side of Leboa (the one in the jungle).

He issued me the mission which just happened to be the convoy that ran right in front of his establishment, so I found a ready rock and prepared to jump into the back of the moving truck.  The time was the middle of the night so the escort vehicles would not see me.  Perched on top of a large boulder near the edge of the road, I waited for the lights of the convoy, which soon appeared.  After the lead truck passed, I hopped into the back of the big truck as it passed in front of my position - all was well as no one seemed to care.  Ricing merrily through the countryside for a while, we happened upon a GP, and of course, the mercs whose rest I had disturbed were less than pleasant.  they immediately shouted offensive remarks and began firing on me - impertinent chaps. Naturally I returned fire.

I saved the game just before I asked the weapons dealer for the mission so I could experiment a bit more.  The next step is to plant a few IEDs and ride the loop to see if I can still detonate them upon my return.  Other possibilities:

  • Hose down the GPs with the flame thrower as I pass them
  • Use an RPG, the crossbow, or a Carl-G
  • Try the mortar
  • Try hopping into one of the ATs to see what the driver and gunner would do
I can't wait to get to Bowa and do the weapons convoy that passes through the Post Office  :-X

Nice clip, PZ! :-X
Bummer you had that weapon jam after the first GP!
Just wondering - was there another escort truck behind you somewhere? It'd be cool to take them out from the very truck they're supposed to be protecting!
I've got to try this sometime, looks like fun. :)
Just reminded me, I had an oddie a week or so ago. I was waiting in some rocks to take out a convoy with my M79. When it came through, there were the 2 escorts, but no truck. I took them out anyway, then looked up the road to see where the truck was. When I turned back around, there it was, just sitting there between two burning ATs right in front of me and not moving. It just appeared there.
So that's something new - a truck with a cloaking device! ;D

mandru

Geez PZ, that did look like fun!

It sounded as if the truck you were in or the escort AT just ahead of you took out a pedestrian which is always funny.  ;D

All the mercs ignore it if it's one of their own driving that smears a buddy so I just don't understand why they get so freaked out when I'm driving through a CP and clip some idiot who's obviously jaywalking.

It also raises the question of how many mercs does it take to lube an AT or a big truck?

I suspect the answer is just one but you gotta hit him just right.

As for jumping onto the hood of an AT and then climbing on up to stand or squat on the gunner's head so he can't fire on you, my experience is that the two of them stop and jump out of the AT to attack you the way they would if they were confronting you while you are standing on the ground next to the truck but an escort mission may set different rules of behavior for them so it might be worth checking out.

I once plotted to commandeer an AT as it pulled up to attack me by simply getting in as the driver was getting out.

The driver, as I swapped positions with him, started firing on me so I slammed the AT into reverse and swung the nose to clip him. Since I was backing up the gunner stepped off directly under my wheels but I took a lot more fire damage than if I'd simply stayed out of the truck and shot them as they pulled up. The anticipation of the scheme was far more amusing than the actual mechanics of how it went down and I've never tried to repeat the operation.

Anytime I encounter something that sounds great in theory but quickly goes FUBAR (let's just call it "fouled up beyond all recognition" for any sensitive readers ) I've started commenting out loud "What we have here is a clear conflict between design and function", often to the amusement of bystanders and the irritation of the one who came up with the plan in the first place.

At the risk of stating the obvious FC2 is so much about being able to try the oddball approach and succeed or fail doesn't really matter as much as the fact that you can try what ever you think up and that adds so much to the replayability and long enjoyment of the game.   :-X  :-X  :-X

good read, mandru, lol @ cloaking device, fragger, and funny vid, PZ  :) :-X

Gosh, driving in the back and swaying a spraying flamethrower around while passing a GP does sound hilarious  ;D :-X

Good stories - I like the idea of hopping into a truck as the driver hops out - would be hilarious to be driving while a merc was still manning the gun!  The weapons convoy missions are ones in which I have seen problems of the missing truck - sometimes when I blow up the ATs, the mission completed message pops up.

Just so happens that I posted a video doing just that with the flamethrower.  In the first few moments you can see the trailing AT driving behind the big truck but it does not have a gunner - not sure what happened to him because I did not see, but I didn't do anything that would cause his death.  In my imagination, the gunner shot his own driver (real or not, that gave me a good laugh ;D ) when I hopped into the big truck and then he became the driver trying to chase me down.  You can see him coming up from behind and then stop as if he wanted to shoot me.  He did the same thing again in front of the Private Property wall, but he never did get off a shot.  He kept chasing me, but my driver (I can call him that now  ;D ) just wouldn't stand still long enough - must have made him quite irritated.

Going through the GPs (2 of them) using the flamethrower was loads of fun - just sprayed as my driver sped through the post.  It was also fun during one point to simply spray the landscape as we sped through the jungle - you could see lots of flames - I wonder how much of the FC2 world you could burn with this rapid spray technique.

Just wondering, catch the big truck when it hits a natural slow down point as it climbs a hill and try to board up front in the cab from the passenger side just to see how the driver takes it.

I'll just have to add that to my things to try list.  :P

nice vid :)  ;D :-X

Mandru, I tried to do it (jump at the truck from the front) but it was as if I was ran over by it. I kept getting hits for no apparent reason, but the driver didn't grin nor shoot - he's exclusively a driver  :)

- How do you tell your driver when to stop?

- Shoot him in the head.

;D

Also, by the way, as long as any vehicle is manned by any merc, you cannot enter it.

Thanks, I've tried this bit of fun several times now - thrilling to ride in the back while someone else drives.  Interestingly on one of my passes through the GP, the driver turned the truck sideways and stepped out, then began shooting me like all the other mercs in the post.  I guess that he was tired of me causing all the damage to his truck.  ;D

Art Blade

<chuckle>  ;D I'm telling you, it was so hard not to shoot him while driving around  ;D

;D I thought so too at first, but when he did his best to get me through the GPs as quickly as possible, I came to think fondly of him as my chauffeur, sort of like Kato and the Green Hornet.  ;D

Art Blade

You know, I don't care what their names are. At the end of the day, I'll have to shoot them anyway, unless I want to drive in circles forever. Makes no sense to remember their names, then. And it's bloody annoying after a while if you carve their names into some stone so anyone would remember them. Only blocks the road, those damn stones. Nah, I don't care what their names are.

;D

It was interesting that the mercs on the ground were shooting at you and not at the big truck, it seemed to take no damage until at the end of the one clip where the AT came up behind you and couldn't help but hit it.

Art, thanks for the heads up on your efforts. There were a couple spots in PZ's vid where the big truck seemed to slow to almost a stop. I just thought that possibly the passenger door might be the ticket but since you've tried it I guess that saves me from being run over a bunch of times unnecessarily.

I think that the mercs must have hit the truck because I could hear the hissing of the engine ever so slightly when we were crawling up that hill - we should not have been going that slow.

Art Blade

yeah, I did my run on the back of a steaming truck myself... takes ages to crawl up some slopes. I think I once spotted a snail overtaking us.  ;D

Yep, they're just tick marks on the brick wall of my ammo storehouse.  Doesn't matter who they were, they shot at me.  That carries the death penalty with me.  They're dead now.  Just one more scratch on my wall among hundreds of idiots who were slower shots than me.

Seems the big truck slowed to lowest speed at the intersections in PZ's vid.  Great videos guys!

If you jump in and shoot out the trailing guard AT does the big truck stop?  Will this set off the lead AT?  Seems even when shooting from the bed, the lead AT goes on and on...  Idiots almost not worth my bullet.  Who pays these lead-catchers to w@&k for them anyway?

I saw in my tour of YouTube videos, one where the big truck is used to get to the diamond in northern Bowa that's on a really huge house shaped rock.  Its kinda near a cellphone tower with glider.  Not having any luck flying I'm gonna try this.  Now I just gotta get a big truck...

The dude ran the truck right up to the rock near one of the "corners" which sloped down a tad.  He jumped into the truck bed, up onto the side rails, up to the cab roof.  Made a short run at the corner of the rock and jumped, and he stuck and could jump higher and there it was.

But I just gotta try this arms dealer Big truck surfing, that's awesome!  Seems the flamethrower is the way to go for that.

LOL  ;D

By the way, you can't get onto an AT driven by a merc. The gunner's place is not accessible, maybe if you jumped at the small bed of the AT and used your own gun, that should w@&k.

Ceres Tauri you'll find at this site the ways to get ALL the diamonds. Someone in the forums has at one time or another described and/or videod the means. Through their help I've attained ALL the diamonds in both playthrus. With some help from our colleagues here I even managed to learn to fly the glider so others wouldnt see the implant of my face on some of the rocks.   ;D ;D. I started as a guest  a couple of visits and then joined the best group of gamers I've come across in the years playing. I'm really interested in the "Big Truck surfing" now. Damn there's a lot I gotta try on #3. I better soup up the walker before I start.
The sun is over the yardarm somewhere in the world..time for a beer :)  :)

No the big truck keeps rolling if you hop out and attack the trailing AT.  Funny, but once when I was shooting at a GP from the bed of the truck, the driver got out and started shooting me point blank - I guess that my bullets must have hit the truck a time or two, which raised his level of annoyance with me.  While the lead truck keeps on rolling, I just pretend that they are my escort through the FC2 world  ;D

That flamethrower is great fun because you're standing in a rapidly moving vehicle spraying the world with liquid fire.
