Favorite and hated missions

The drug field and Medusa missions are among my favorites, as are the outpost liberations.  I think I must have repressed memories, because I can't recall the missions I dislike nearly as much as I recall my favorites.  However, two hated missions come to mind, the names of which escape me:

  • One where you escort some fool up to his home in a village.  The problem is that he is a fool and rushes into the business end of pirate weapons all too frequently.
  • The mission where you swim through some sinking ship and are attacked by a guy hidden behind a bulkhead.
Both of these are exceedingly linear run-and-gun missions and are essentially timed (which I hate) because you need to accomplish your task in a limited amount of time.

Good thread, PZ.

Like:

- Prison Break In.
- Drug farm
- Getting to the chopper
- Infiltrating Vaas's compound
- Pain It Black (before you blow up the entrance door with C4)

I also like the outposts and wanted dead missions.

Dislike:

- Protect the fool PZ mentioned above and Willis.
- The forced stealth mission at the dock sets in a cave.
- Getting back Jason's equipment

I hated a similar mission in Dead Island where the fool you were meant to be protecting would constantly rush mobs of zombies...and take the most dangerous route!

So far though in my limited progression, the favourite is definitely the drug fields, though for suspense and tension The Medusa is great too.

So far I don't have any hated missions; though the man-eater shark quest is getting very annoying. Primarily as the animal repellant isn't working and the locals keep shooting at the sharks too, thus ending the mission  >:((

I like the two last missions: The one where you crack the satellite dish and the one where you blow up the oil installations. The satellite mission is only fun the first half, where you approach the bunker.
I also like the medusa mission and the mission where you escape from Vaas' insanity def. How you have to get to the chopper and then get your gear back is cool.

I dislike most of the Buck missions, although it's quite impressive how you sneak under almost the entire northern island through tunnels and caves.
I dislike Fragger's stonethrow mission as well. Especially because you're supposed to keep all these freaks alive.
Another bummer is the mission where you have to take a picture of a meeting on a bridge, in order to get proof of a sub-organisation in Hoyt's clan. It's so damn linear and sneaking past the guarding privateers is a laugh. These guys are either blind or don't give a f***.

I completely agree with Binnatics.

Jim, get on the coast guard boat and steer towards that little structure in the water that barely sticks out (relic down there I believe). Climb up the ship's roof for a better angle and to see more. Shoot all sharks (about 3 or 4) so the Maneater remains (he takes more than one arrow). If you're lucky, he'll by then swim to the shore to the right of the outpost where you can finish him off without any interference and it's shallow enough not to worry about a long time in and under water :)

I too largely agree with Binn's summary, although I must say that whacking that mongrel Buck at the end of those Tomb Raider-style missions was extremely satisfying, especially seeing as how I managed to nail the bugger first go. Satisfying not just because he was such a despicable character, but for being such a rotten excuse for an Aussie and for making us look bad :angry-new: I actually cheered and flipped the bird at that tattooed piece of U-bend scum after I gave him a dagger sandwich and soiled my boot by kicking his depraved arse out of my way >:D That was the only highlight out of that whole sequence of missions.

My fave missions are the Medusa, the drug fields, Pirate's cove and the first part of Paint it Black. Unfavourites are pretty much all of the others, especially - surprise surprise - that horrible rock-throwing one.

Actually, the first time I did the one Binn mentioned where you have to photograph the meeting on the bridge, I suffered a weird glitch (that is, the game did, not me. Not then, anyway...) You have to pick up an RPG and blow up the truck on the bridge, then get up there and get the roll off the dead pirate leader. The first time I did that mission, the pirate ended up hanging by one arm from underneath the bridge. Not knowing any better, I thought that was scripted and that you had to find a way to get to him. I tried interacting with him from above on the bridge, I tried seeing if there was a way I could reach him (there were some planks sticking out from the side of the bridge near him that I thought had to be utilized in some way), and I tried shooting his arm from each end of the bridge to see if I could make him fall into the river (he was flashing red the whole time) - until finally it clicked and I reloaded. I had to do the mish again, but this time he stayed on the bridge the way he was supposed to ::)

Art Blade

??? heh, pretty crazy to encounter such a bad glitch the first time around and of course having to believe it was scripted. Good you reloaded, mate  :)

One that I disliked the most was that stupid mission at the end where you knife Hoyt after the poker game.  I can't stand repeating the same thing (insanity definition) until you determine the proper key sequence to complete the story.

durian

Agreed completely with PZ regarding Hoyt's fight.

I dislike QTE's in games but this takes the crown of being he worst QTE in games that I've played in over 20 years.

Cheers Art - I was on the boat but hadn't though of getting onto the roof. I also saw the sunken temple but was too tired by that point to give it yet another go... :) I will try that next time  :-X

Kudos to you sir.

Re that Hoyt QTE, I think there are only three controls that you need to access to make the moves, so whenever anything appeared on the screen I would just mash all three controls repeatedly in very rapid succession - one of them had to be the right one! It worked.

Art Blade

there are four. The last being a one-time only event, the forward (W) button, to ram a knife through the top of his skull resulting in a cross (the other knife across his neck).

The easiest way to do it is to not follow the action on screen, just stare at the centre of the screen and wait for those pop-ups to show. Knowing that they will only be to the left, the right or the bottom of the screen lets you prepare for hitting the correct key when it pops up. Only the last one, W, comes at a surprise and is missable. Now that you know, you might hit it the next playthrough :)

What a pointless exercise in futility.  I don't know how something like mindless button mashing becomes part of an open world game.  \:/

That's exactly what I was thinking; jack of all trades good at none type of an idea.  However, the more I play t, the more I like it.  It is definitely my game of the year despite many of it's drawbacks.

I find it also hopelessly annoying these QTE (was that right?) mission parts. With all major baddies you fight with the knife; Hoyt, Buck and Vaas. Quite an anticlimax. I'm used to boss kills that are the Cherry on the pie and both difficult to take out, and satisfying.
They could have better invented a real-time knife-fight mode with Batman-like skills and moves. That would also fit it nicely with the whole 'takedown-thing' they introduced which is very cool btw, except for some seemingly untakable takedowns, lol. The double takedown from below; will I éver find 2 guys standing on a climbable roof chatting together so that I can jump up and ram my dagger into they sorry-a$$ faces??
Btw. yesterday I found out on some youtube walkthrough that the in-game explanation video for the gunslinger-takedown is wrong. The game states that you have to press the fire-button (left mouse button) to make Jason grab the gun of his victim right after initiating the takedown. That's the same button as for the knife-takedown and Art and I have been discussing a lot of ways how the game will predict whether to perform a knife-takedown or a gunslinger-takedown. I tried all the possibilities without success until I found this guy on that youtube video helping me out; it's not the left mouse button, it's the right mouse button for the gunslinger-takedown. Haven't tried it yet, but it sounds completely reasonable. Will post if it works :-X :)

I found this helpful info thanx to "MrAttentionHorse" on his Youtube video explaining how to do the trick:

Far Cry 3 - The Gunslinger Takedown

Edit: It works!!! Very nice ^-^ :-X

Art Blade

indeed, with the right mouse button (RMB) you can choose the pistol. LMB would give your the knife option and whatever key you've bound to use for grenades, the grenade takedown. I did all of them, all fun  :) :-X I still haven't performed either double takedown, from below or above.

I need to try those myself, but am not far into the game enough to have the skills learned.

most opportunities develop during missions. Particularly those (few) that have an open world aspect to them, like the one where you have to reach and enter the chopper. :)

I've done one death from below during one of Buck's missions, the one where you sneak into the old Japanese ruins and end up swimming through a drain into an old submarine pen. There's a guy who wanders around on the dock and does an occasional bit of welding or something. I swam up below him when he was standing near the edge and got a prompt, so I initiated it. The takedown sequence was that I reached up, pulled him underwater and knifed him there. It was pretty cool and none of the other guards was any the wiser.

I haven't done the "death from above" one yet. I thought I had an opportunity the other night but I didn't get a prompt. Maybe I was too high above him.

fragger

After watching the vid that Art posted above, I realised why I thought there were only three controls. Like the guy narrating in the vid, I missed or just didn't see that final one-off prompt (well, the first final one) and simply killed Hoyt with the stab to the ribs. When Art had earlier mentioned stabbing Hoyt in the neck and head I was wondering if maybe the program picks a random kill at the end each time because when I killed Hoyt it was without doing the neck-and-head routine, just like kill #1 in the vid.

Mystery solved :)

But I really don't like those QTEs. It would be more fun, and more satisfying, to hunt the scumbag down and do him in your own way, like when you clobber Voorhees and Greaves (or their lieutenants) in FC2.
