It´s a great game but...

I just finished another round af FC2 today and I was again struck by how bad the ending is. I´m not going describe it here since most of us have played it a number of times and I don´t want spoil it for any first time players. This got me wondering, is there anything in the game that you find annoying?

I hope this doesn´t comes across as one of those "this game sucks!!" threads like the ones you see on the official FC2 forum.  ::)

Art Blade

Don't worry, that would have sounded different entirely :) What I read there is "I love the game, how can I cope with its weaknesses?"

Just don't play through the end, go back to earlier saves or simply start over. Or, like D_B showed us, try to change the end by rearranging the background LOL

To answer your question, I found several things annoying (during my first through) but I managed to cope with it. Weapons degradation, malaria attacks, respawning guard posts, annoying respawining patrols... those were the points. But now I'm happy that the game works like that, because it provides me with extra fun  ;D

I don't like the ending either, but I rationalize it the same as a movie that has an ending that disturbs - I can see why the developers did it, but it is not my cup of tea so to speak.  With that said, when I play through, I just quit before the 96-ish% and start fresh either from the beginning or from a prior save.  Because I am starting with the PC version now, and can use the information in the fine cheats thread that Art started, I can do all kinds of neat things that you simply can't do with console versions, so it is almost like a brand new game for me.

As to things that I don't care for, there is very little - most of what a new user finds objectionable can be overcome by in-game technique.  For instance, re-spawn in the game is quite rapid - it is easy to avoid the GPs or try new attack techniques.

However, there are some things that I would wish for to make the game truly one of a kind for me:

  • Cooperative MP - I would love to get together with 3-4 other members of our site in cooperative mission play - imagine having 3 buddies pile into an assault truck careening through the FC2 world.
  • A map generator for SP where GPs and areas are automatically populated with mercs, the density of which is the mappers choice.
  • Some kind of SDK where you could create new missions which you could upload for others to enjoy. - imagine an endless supply of missions that you could simply plug into your system.

Art Blade

looks like we did the same thing at the same time there, PZ :)

We did!  However because my post was longer, I saw the red "another post has been added..." warning, but I submitted any way - looks like we have similar methods of coping with the characteristics of the game - probably something that comes naturally to those that really love the game.

Art Blade

yeah... and now I can pick up what you mentioned: If the game starts to suck, well, then bloody use the cheats  ;D ;D ;D

Just started the ignore_player cheat this morning, and am having great fun (and practice) gunning down mercs with 6P9 head shots - because they don't see me, this is an entirely new experience - can get up close and personal to see their behaviors.  For the first time I actually saw their mouths moving when they were talking - and it matched what they were saying!

Art Blade

they even grimace if a mosquito is cruising around their head, trying to swat it :) Now we're starting to tell what's great about this game. Because most of the stuff is just great  ;D

at end of day most games of this nature have odd/poor endings. a true and realistic ending would be either ending up in a body bag, fleeing to escape such a fate or taking control of a faction, the ending is a very typical "western commercialist culture"  pacifier ending

going to stop there so dont spoil it for those not reached end yet and also cos its too late to start a politcal examination/criticism of the game (like were are the child soldiers that actually are involved in these type of conflicts and many of whom die every day!)

As long as we regard a game as a game, there's nothing to worry about. I suppose you don't walk around in a proper merc outfit and shoot everyone in the head ;D If so, I hope not that often  ;D

Weak assault rifles is one thing that annoys me.
I normaly have my Dragunov in the primary slot mostly because there is no powerfull AR... which takes me to the second thing that annoys me - you have to shoot 15 bullets in the chest of a shirtless guy to kill him (and he might lay on the ground and shoot you with his pistol).
I understand it as a way to make players aim in the head, but still, is annoying.
Besides that, I don't think there is something else to annoy me  :)

...you have to shoot 15 bullets in the chest ...

Are you sure that you're not using an automatic paint ball rifle, JRD?   ;D

JRD

My PKM or my SAW sometimes seems to tickle them... but no laugh  :P ....... and if I'm using the silenced MP5, then its a joke  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

If you want to play "paintball" you might want to choose a different weapon. Here, we were having fun with this one...

Yeah, I have the same issue with the silent MP5

Great paint ball gun, Art!   :-X

i really like the USAS, shame its only got 12 round clip, but its good with the unllimited ammo and reliability cheats running,  its great for pruning the trees and bushes too (when not concerned about accuracy like to shoot as much as possible off the trees that a patrol is going to drive past then just before it gets to it shoot a flare into it. they tend to pull up and if not getting burned try to see where it came from, giving me enough time to get them with head shots. :-X

haha, I've only been waiting for a reason to post that pic. I just love how that guy falls over, his pistol dropping... and the red stuff, I think he had a serious digestion problem with that hot chili con carne we had in the restaurant next doors.  ;D

reliability and unlimited ammo... that's how the fun begins :)

indeed, find very satisfying and therapeutic to walk up to a patrol or outpost and hold the trigger down till they have all stopped screaming, need the No Recoil cheat too, almost forgot about that..... ;)

At least you can kill a shirtless guy with the MP5. Beware of those with shirts... just like paintball indeed  ;D

I admit to using the occasional cheat in other games, mainly to hurry it up and get to the end. FC2 tho, i like to prolong as much as possible. My last playthru was 100 hrs, so no cheats used, ever.

I just started #5, and after 3 days, i'm at 4%. ;)
Are you listening to the wind now? Tell the wind to bring me some beer. F*ck the beer, we need women!

PZ

I'm finding the cheats are quite fun for a change of pace - really enjoying the ignore_player cheat because it allows me to act the part of the tourist and roam the countryside freely without always having to watch my back and listen for vrooom - vrroooommm!

Art Blade

Indeed... "peace out, dude"  ;D I think I've earned the right to drive around in peace if I feel like it, because I finished the game without cheats. Back then, the Jackal blew himself to kingdom come, the leaders of the factions died by my very hands, and those mercs still roaming the country better stay down if I say so now  ;D

Plus it gives you the chance to try out new techniques - I recall posting some time ago (before PC) about igniting propane cans with the 6P9 - now I can go in to see if they have any kind of reaction other than to the fire threat.

Art Blade

Something that is pure fun and interesting is to use ignoreplayer and go into a capital city (respawn mercs in a cease fire zone) where I start a fight. Then I try to move around and train my stealth movements. The mercs react to sound and focus on the spot my last shot was fired from, and when I make noises from a different place they start searching around my current position. It's like they're all blind but do hear nicely. Sometimes they go "there he is!" and everyone starts to rush in on me, while I sneak out and watch them in their disorientation. Most fun it is to climb some high ground and fire something loud (AS50) killing a merc nearby, then sneak away and watch: They come close and keep "looking" at the sky  ;D
