The game is set in 1989, in a post-apocalyptic alternate-reality Sweden, which has become overrun by killer robot machines. The robots vary in size from small spotting drones, lightly armed scouting bots, all the way up to larger bots that loom over the houses. The player assumes the role of a Swedish teenager who, upon returning from an island excursion, finds that the local population has vanished as the result of the robotic invasion. The player must survive the Swedish wilderness while attempting to both determine the fate of those who used to live there as well as find a way to defeat the machines.

Just Cause is an action-adventure video game series created by Avalanche Studios, which was formerly owned by Eidos Interactive and after 2009 by Square Enix Europe. The series consists of Just Cause, Just Cause 2, Just Cause 3, and Just Cause 4. The games are open world and primarily take place in islands and archipelagos.
