That depends a little on what kind of games you like to play, but here´s a few of my favorites(some are not released yet):

Modern Warfare 2 (do get COD4:modern warfare if you havent already)
Wolfenstein of course
Fallout 3
Medal of honor (all of them)
Halo
Crysis

I don't have too many games, not hardly any experience, but here is what I can share.

  • My all time favorite is FC2 because of all of the things we've mentioned many times.  I recently discovered that I like shooters above other games - tried Fuel, and while it is amazingly beautiful, I've not really been able to get much into the game yet.  So I guess first advice would be to decide what genre you'd like to play.  If you like driving, then Fuel is the ultimate winner.
  • Among my favorite shooters are WWII games, preferably of an open world nature.  The only one I know that is close is Medal of Honor: Airborne, but again, my experience is limited.  I recently purchased that for $9.99 for the PC, but I have the PS3 version purchased before FC2 for only $19.99.  The more linear games like Call of Duty tend to last only a short while, and have limited replay value, at least for me.
  • My recent passion is ARMA2, but I believe that it is only available for the PC, and it requires a reasonably high powered PC.  You might check into ARMA1 though, if you upgrade your PC - the mods available are almost endless.  (However, I still come back to FC2 nearly every day.)
Good luck Gord, it is difficult to beat what we've found in FC2.  My only wish is that Ubisoft would have done with it what Bohemia Interactive has done with their software - just about everything is possible.  *In fact, an experienced ARMA scripter could do a version of FC3!

RPG's, but most of them are 360 exclusives, Fallot 3 is multi platform, but not sure if they have the downloadable missions.

Mostly I play JRPG's (Japanes RPG's), eg Final Fantasy, very long games and very deep with quests and crafting etc.

Currently playing :
Infinite Undiscovery (2nd playthrough)
Star Ocean last Hope
The Last Revenant.

Not so crazy on shooters since I moved from mouse to controller, also kinda like doing the couch slouch while playing games as opposed to hovering over a keyboard. So JRPG's are well suited to that kinda relaxed environment.

SP for sure... specially now that I discovered I've been left out of Windows LIVE CRAP and can't do MP on games that requires Bill Gates's approval  >:(

I guess you already checked all games we put up at OWG... and also those on Off Topic, but some of my favs (other than FC2, of course) are:
- GTA IV. Rockstar knows about open world, although missions tend to be quite linear (all platforms, 3rd person)
- Max Payne series. An outstanding shooter... corridor game, but excellent fun. (all platforms, 3rd person)
- Operation Flashpoint 2 Dragon Rising (1st person, out October 6th hopefully). Seems to be more friendly regarding to controlling your men. Arma 2 is very complicated.
- Flight Simulator X - great, great fun.... Excellent scenario, allows you to fly to your local airport with rich details and have some 20 missions with it to give you something else to do. PC only.
- FUEL is also a game that I am loving........found my heart beating so hard today I have to put down gaming for a while....... ;D ;D ;D

Hope it helps.... It's great to read others preferences...  ;)

Battlefield Bad Company
I've preached here before about BFBC but it's a first person shooter, destructible environments, and more than a few laughs to boot.  It's probably $30 retail right now as its a year old.  The SP and MP are outstanding.  Honestly the SP is worth the price of admission.  I can't say it enough, this game is what hooked me on gaming more than any other game.

Killzone 2
You've got a PS3 and this is a PS3 exclusive game.  It's a gritty modern warfare game, great enemy AI and loads of warfare fun.  Again the SP and MP are great although I played less MP on this one than BFBC (by a lot).  Good SP game but probably $50 to $60 right now.

Battlefield 1943 is $15 on the PSN for download only.  MP only though, but WWII battles, Guadalcanal, Wake Island, Iwo Jima, plus a dogfight only Coral Sea.

Little Big Planet
I know this is off course, but since you've got the PS3 and it's exclusive, you should try it.  It is COMPLETELY  different but fun, fun, fun.  Crazy physics engine for a platformer game.  Ok, I had this on my mind cause I played some 2 player with my son today and laughed a lot.

Lastly, go on the PSN and download some free demos.  You can't lose.  You get a good portion of the game for free and see if you like it.

You can get a demo for BF1943, Batman Arkham Asylum, inFamous, lots lots more (probably even BFBC still).  Just shake it up and try something, and ITS FREE.

That batman demo is only for gold members on XBOXLIVE, takes about a week to filter down to plebs like me, was the same with FUEL, then the d/l was corrupt and wouldn't play >.<

The batman game got 9/10 in the Playstaion magazine here, cant wait to get it!

apologies, missed the poll what with one thing or another stopping me getting on the net.
PC games  X2 - spaceship game (nearest there is to ELITE)  Morrowind Elder Scrolls (not for donkeys years)  TOTAL WAR - all from Shogun to Medieval 2  Far Cry 2  ARMA 2
NON-PC games  Chess  W40k
PS2 games  Tenchu - Stealth Assassin
and way back in time ELITE, and GAUNTLET 2 games would love to have on a PC, they were that good wouldnt even want fancy new graphics for them, lost days playing those 2

oh yes, can recall getting very very excited about upgrading to Amiga1200 to play it, More than double the power - only now my mobile phone has more clout! But you gotta dig those wire-frame graphics ;D

Actually, they upgraded ELITE to a game called Terminus which uses the same type of phyisics.  Just upgraded out of the wireframe graphics.

QuoteTiger Woods Golf - Not on the pc anymore

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 is on PC.  Unless you are referring to a different game.

I play exclusively on PC mostly for financial reasons and some of my faves are:

Crysis
Crysis: WARHEAD
Halo
Halo 2 (haven't seen Halo 3 for PC)
Gears of War (again, no PC version of the sequel)
Assasin's Creed (waiting for the sequel)
Splinter Cell and any sequel
Need For Speed and any sequel
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (absolutely LOVE this game); Not much into WWII era shooters tho
Quantum of Solace (I like James Bond what else can I say?)

As for open world games, I just purchased ARMAII which looks really cool after I vsisted their website and FUEL but I like driving games.  I've been a Need For Speed fan since its first release back when I was in high school.

good news KillerZ.  You've got experts here on both games.  As for FUEL you'll be able to join Art on a cross country free roam.

I remember I had one of the NFS games for PC way back when and it was great but thinking back how beautiful everything looked (forests, big rock formations) but you were forced to stay on the road.  FUEL was the answer to my prayers.  I think staying on a circuit was never my thing...
Title: Re: Other games
Post by: Art Blade on August 19, 2009, 03:39:06 PM
of the games mentioned after my last post, I recall X2 and X3 (X2 was way nicer in my opinion, regarding spaceship designs) and Assassin's Creed was great for the time being (gets boring after like 2nd through). In my last post I mentioned select NFS games but I played most of the sequels except those specialised in specific cars such as BMW, if I remember correctly. Not all of them were pearls, especially the latest NFS "under cover" was utter crap (nothing new, it was kind of a remake of previous sequels). I loved Underground I (II was not as cool, but good) and Carbon. Crysis... too much a fuss before release and too little replay value. Once through, I only replayed one or two missions a couple of times. Pity, the on-screen menu was great, and when I was ranting about ArmA2 I said it would have been cool with a menu like Crysis, and oh gosh, OFP:DR is going to use exactly that kind of menu, which slapped a smile on my face :)

X2 was much better than X3 i reckon, just cruising thru the stars in a kind of free-play fashion, did get X3 but the intro stuff bored me silly - not into the story they we5e trying to tell suppose. As for Crysis (fidly suit nonsense), Deadspace (weird off-centre 3rd person view), Fallout3 (slow-mo lost its lustre after short while) got each not long after release but they made little to no lasting impression on me, and as for Halo (pc? recent one neither know nor care which) got into it but it seemed very short and was completed way to quickly. Then temptation beat me round back of the head with a rifle butt and put FC2 into weekly shopping basket (you know, bread, milk, apples, sausages, cheese and murder in africa. as you do) and here playing it still after about 6 months, completed 6 or 7 times and look forward to playing it. in the past it was only games like TOTAL WAR stuff that had that kind of longevity usually cos its hard w@&k taking over Europe either in sandals or on Horseback. And thanks to a random late-night session stumbled across OWG.  :-X

Yes I know TW 08 is on the PC. Unfortunately the newest version is TW 10, and not on the pc. So that means pc users are 2 versions behind, with no new ones for the pc. Thanks EA. >:(

:) Same here, dke58, I get into other games from time to time, but sooner or later I hear the siren-song of the savanna calling to me (or maybe that should be the Mac-melody)

Other games I enjoy are Half-Life (Steam, though - ewww) and the Call of Duties - like Modern Warfare the best.
Tried Call of Juarez recently, but got bored with the endless scripting and the uncompromising linearity of it. Close, but no seegar! Want to get into ArmaII and Fuel when I can afford to splurge a bit on some new games - bloody landscaping of our backyard's got me on a tight budget at present.
I also sometimes delve into strategy/micro-management games like the Civilization series and the old Age of Empires, sedate but fun (for me, anyway). Sooner or later though I have to go and shoot something - if I don't shoot mercs on the PC I might just end up shooting the mafia standover man that poses as our bobcat operator...

Age of Empires was a fever for me too... After that I played Age of Mythologies... great RTS, you could play Vikings, have heroes like Thor on your side and summon the Gods to have a meteor rain or a lighning storm at your enemies... and Star Wars Gallactic Battlegrounds... not too good actually, but the sound effects just like those in the movies got me hooked for a while. Never played any RTS since then...

forgot all about StarWars Galactic Battlegrounds, was always good for a laugh, creating loads of Dark Jedi Masters then run around enmass turning enemies units and buildings to your side. or just darken the skies with Tie Fighters :-X Also got a Jedi Knight game somewhere but played it. will have to find it and have a go (they should put lightsabers in FC3 ! ! ! . . . might be more effective than the machete ;D )

Best Starwars game was Tie Fighter (old DOS game)
I'd wish they'd do a re-make of that.. bah, they'd likely ruin it...

I still have the guide books, which reminds me I should
look up some of the virtual DOS things, see if I can get it to go.

Sorry, mate! A "bobcat" is like a miniature bulldozer, normally used in landscaping, eg. for clearing a yard prior to laying new lawn, and such. You may have a different name for them. They require a bit of skill to operate, so you normally have to hire a guy to operate it, as well as hiring the bobcat itself if the guy doesn't come with one. And in this country, this doesn't come cheap...
I thought bobcats were an international thing. I'm not sure where they're made, for all I know they may be strictly an Aussie innovation.

Looked at that article you found. I WANT ONE OF THOSE! Then I can sack the guy who's operating the one that's clawing up our yard, and I can get my arm and leg back!
The article cleared one thing up, bobcats are an American-made product. The machine, that is, not the big puddy-tat.

Yes, I was looking into it, The vehicles (for want of a better word) are varied but sucky, with very bad controls.

That kind of killed it for me, but the rest of the stuff is pretty good, the gfx are a mixed bag, sometimes great, but now and again, they slide.

Combat is varied, guns for RDA, bows for Na'vi.

You get to choose a side after playing for a bit, you can be RDA (think marine), or Na'vi (go native), there are also spells of sorts, but nothing great.

Not worth doing a review, but I would say maybe 7/10, which is better than most movie tie-ins.

The next big game on my horizon would be Bayonetta, dunno if it will get a PC release, its definately on 360 and PS3.

The PS3 is ported from the 360 (which is a bit odd), by a different company than the original dev's and suffers slightly because of this.

Bayonetta does look nice, shame its console only, but will have PS3 before its out in the EU.

Waiting for Stalker Call of the Pripyat and Metro 2033 for PC release :)

I know alot of people dislike steam, but for those who do not I saw a good offer through them. Its called Valve Complete Pack, includes Half life, Counter Strike, Left for Dead, Portal etc etc.22 Titles in all (games & expansions).

Cost is only £52:99, but you get £160:32 worth of software. Not a bad deal really.

Just thought would let you all know in case any of those games float your boat (so to speak).

Also just noticed they got a THQ pack too, so they probably got a few others on the go.

With the prices thay charge for a game in Brazil, I'd say that STEAM is one of the most interesting inventions in my gaming life  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

That is, if you want to buy original software, of course... I can get all of those games for some US$$20 in the middle of the streets with no fuss... but I won't!
