Title: Just started re-playing Borderlands
Post by: Fiach on December 13, 2010, 11:41:28 AM
I got Borderlands on release and had great fun with the game, I downloaded Ned's Zombie Island DLC, but never got around to playing it unfortunately.

After getting a bit more into shooters after CoD BO and MoH, I figured I would dust off Borderlands and try some of the DLC's, namely Knoxx and Claptrap as I already had NZI.

I had played as Lilith (SMG) and Mordecai (Sniper) and Roland (Assault Rifle), I didnt really like Brick, so I decided to start another Mordecai, but this time as a Gunslinger (Pistols and Repeaters).

Well firstly I had forgotten how much fun the game was, even the "Challenges" were just fun and refreshing also pleasently surprising to see these random 1K and 2k Experience gains with cool names, just for killing stuff! :)

But the real eye opener was Mordecai, I found Sniper pretty easy and thought that pistols would be more of a challenge, holy crap, Gunslinger is lethal! Everything I faced was down in a couple of shots, Sledge was maybe 6-10 shots, because of his shield, even the Artifact Guardians in Dhal were like 2 shots from my pistol, the repeater is a cool "spray and pray" back up when you are geting swarmed.

The point being, well, this game has such incredible re-playability, apart from the four diverse characters, the different skill trees add such customisation capabilities, I'm sure to be playing this game forever lol :)

Cheers Fiach  :-X

I saw an interview with some of the developers where they were talking about some of the creative character builds that players had come up with and they specifically mentioned this kid they met with a sweet pistol build that was owning everything in sight.  It was almost like they were surprised by the game that they created!

Yeah I have a pretty awesome 2 shot pistol on Mord, its a revolver (Defiler) has 4X Corrosive, it 2 shots Crimsons.  Sniper Mord is pretty cool, I have a Volcano on him, pretty much lays waste to everything, Pistol seems so much more cool though :)

I know what you mean, sometimes when I'm playing my sniper build I'm almost wishing things will get out of control so I'll have an excuse to pull out my Defiler and go "Ok corral" on their butts  >:D

Now that I've pretty much seen all of the game (finished my first playthrough, modded heavily, and played all four DLCs) I can relate. Before I got the game, I was intrigued by the idea of playing as a sniper (Mordecai) and indeed he's a great character to play. First I was all sniper, later I added shotguns and pistols, and I tried all weapons with him. In the end, again I can relate, the best weapons for him seem to be revolvers and perhaps a few good repeaters. I'm glad that he can also handle any other weapon quite well, I am fond of a few shotguns.. they and revolvers plus some character class mods (gunslinger, assassin) make him a one-man army  ;D

I tried Lilith but wasn't exactly fond of her, I might try Brick and Roland some time just to see what they can do.

All in all, this game has so much potential, on top modding gear, it is truly a great game with a great replay value :-X

Roland´s turret will be of great use for you if you should feel like trying out Moxi´s underground, especially as it can be modded in game to either regenerate health or ammo (or both at the same time, can´t really remember).

Roland is the "spray and pray" type character, similar to Lilith but even more extreme - some of his class mods, like "heavy gunner" or "shock trooper" exaggerate this characteristic even further.  I think you would like Brick too Art - definately give him a try, at least up through the Dahl Headlands.

The only thing that worries me (makes me wonder, more like) regarding Brick is how to deal with the final Boss in the Vault. Punching his lights out seems to be a bit heavy.. which would be far out  ???

But remember, Brick is also an explosive specialist - anything that goes boom goes boom bigger in his hands.  Rockets are especially good, but any explosive weapon will be kicked up a notch.

that's something that went through my head last night, if Sniper&Pistol Mordecai is also good with shotguns (or any other weapon), then Brick should be able to use any other weapon, too.. and indeed, anything that goes boom.. yes :)  :-X

The ability to develop individual weapon proficienies - for instance, Brick with sniper abilities - is one aspect of the customization that I feel a lot of casual BL players miss out on, but it's a big part of what gives creative players the ability to really put their stamp on a character build.

Indeed. At first all I knew was that Mordecai was specialised in sniper rifles and pistols. I was almost afraid to use the shotgun for the first time, and I only did that because I had run out of ammo somewhere in Skag Gully. But I remembered that you guys told me to try different weapons (to gain efficiency in something else but snipers and pistols) and oh yes.. I used several weapons then, in that bloody mess of a Skag Gully, just to get out and away alive. I used every weapon I had, on one hand because the good and used-to weapons had run out of ammo and on the other hand because what I had was too weak.. I was looking for something that had both ammo and packed a punch.. assault rifle and shotgun did it back then, but I fell in love with a big shotty.. not so much the assault rifles. SMGs in my arsenal were too weak.. Man, that was tough :) But in the end, I kept using basically everything but rocket launchers (recently I tried a few of those, I modded my efficiency with it to 15, and used lvl61 launchers of various brands and effects.. but I still don't like them.)

So in the end I have a Hunter with a gunslinger preference and an addiction to shotguns  :)

Its not that you cant use other weapons, but eg. Mordecai's skill trees only enhance Sniper and Pistol, so for a more enhanced character, you should stick to the template, but on some occasions, nothing say's "I love you", more than a 12 gauge shotgun between the eyes :)  >:D

My biggest issue with rockets is the really slow projectile speed.  For some reason I can never judge a moving target well enough to hit it with a slow rocket, and sometimes I have trouble with even stationary ones.  Some orange level rocket launchers have increased projectile velocity and Lilith's "quicksilver" skill can help with this also by increasing projectile speed.  For my money though, I like to use this guy:

Here is a video of Brick punching the Destroyer`s lights out! Pretty cool... whoever is playing is on a kamikaze mode.  8)

Pay attention at the Destroyer`s energy bar as he punches him... Brick`s fists can do a lot of damage for sure! On the other side he has to move on close to the Destroyer, which wastes some of his Beserker time.

Another thing is that Brick has a skill tree to regenerate health while on Berserk mode so he better go on personal with the Destroyer anyway!  >:D

Thats one of the things I never "got" about Berz mode, the time needed to wade from enemy to enemy.

There is another game where I play a Berz called Too Human, but you actually "slide" from enemy to enemy really fast, to lay down the smack whiler 'zerking, but you use a big a$$ axe instead of fists.

I decided to give Brick a try after finding myself surrounded several times while playing the Siren. Her phasewalk is good to put on some distance between you and enemies when they zero on you but you can only do so much damage to them even when entering/exiting phasewalk with a class mod.

I go Berserk when I realize I`m outnumbered (all the time  ::) ) and surrounded, so basically they come to me  ;)

Nice one! I hadnt thought about it like that :)

I like Phasewalk too though :)

Those are some heavy hay-makers!  Notice he's got a few levels on the Destroyer at this point, but that's still a lot of damage  :-X  Pumping up Brick's "Sting like a bee" skill can help with the issue of closing distance between victims . . . er, meat-bags . . . er, opponents  :-D

Just replayed Old Haven with Lilith, that has to be one of the best FPS maps ever :) Its pretty awesome going into Phasewalk beside the Crimsons and corroding the crap out of their armour! :)

Heres a guy playing Old Haven as Brick, it looks like a helluva lot of fun :)

And yes, that guy is a maniac  :-()

Ive only done the game with Mord and twice with Lil, I didnt like Roland, but I havent tried Brick. Is he good to play do you think?

He IS really fun to play with. I tried Lilith first and then I started a game with Mordecai and another with Brick (I too don't like Roland). I kept playing with brick because I got some nice weapons at first, I guess, and also because his Berserk mode is very fun. I found myself charging enemies just so I could punch 'em all into goo  >:D

You definitely should give him a go, mate!  :-X

Hehe, simply couldn't resist using "punch" in that context with Brick  :-()

You see, Borderlands is so well balanced that four playthroughs wouldn't feel like doing the same thing four times but rather doing the same thing in four different ways. Playing with Brick (just like with any of the other three characters) requires some adaptation on the player's side, which leads to tackling the whole game in a different way. If you play Brick expecting him to play like Mordecai, you are in for some frustration. But t if you just play Brick to learn how this particular character behave, then you are in for some action  >:D >:D >:D >:D

Go on, mate and have some fun!  :-X
