Title: Screenshots
Post by: fragger on December 08, 2012, 07:19:04 AM
I thought maybe to get a screenie topic going for anything cool, funny or that just looks nice. Here's a few to get things going in the "just nice" genre :-()

Night skies look simply fantastic in FC3.
[smg id=4961 align=center width=600]

Definitely a better-looking Moon than FC2's. This is more like its proper size, not looking like it's on a collision course with Earth, and has a realistic glow around it. Isn't this a romantic scene? Limpid moonlight, waving palms... gunfire...
[smg id=4962 align=center width=600]

The sun rays still filter through the trees like in FC2 but now with a neat lens-flare effect added.

Great shots fragger!  :-X

I especially like the last one which reminds me so much of Africa in FC2  ^-^

Nice shots there fragger  :-X

I've just arrive at the beach at sunset with a character; it's the most beautiful scene in this game.

Well blow me down, I didn't notice that! Apparently it doesn't get included in the screenshot, nor presumably would any other HUD stuff that may be showing at the time of the capture. Excellent!

Nice spot there Art :-D

Nice pics and atmosphere there.

I have seen other screen shots with hud elements and mini-map present - so fragger must be a genius or using the force  :)

How did you make them? I'm sure you didn't use Steam-sceenshot ability since you don't have a very good connection. That's what I do to get sceenies and they are all hood-included :-(

I'm just hitting the Print Screen key (PrtScn), the pics get stored in My Documents/My Games/Far Cry 3/Screenshots. That's all :)

If you take a swipe with your knife (hit your takedown key, F by default), there's a fraction of a second before the knife flashes across the screen. Hit PrtScrn almost immediately after the takedown key and you can get a picture with no weapon showing:

No fightin' - gone fishin'

I'll have to see if I can produce some without HUD, too. These are from the steam screen capture tool:

Nice ones, Art :) :-X

Yep, I had to convert mine too, they were huge :-()

It's such a great-looking environment, it's hard to do find places that aren't like postcard material :-()

I love the way waterfalls are done in this game, they look superb. Same with the sky and the light that the sun and moon cast on the water.
Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Art Blade on December 09, 2012, 04:08:38 PM
cheers, guys :)

The only thing they didn't do well is the horizon when looking at the sea. The "fake" mountains seem to be rather near but touch the horizon which makes the horizon appear too near and that makes it look as if it was cut off -- just as if you'd stand on top of a mountain plateau close to a waterfall.

Here's a bunch more. It's got to be one of the richest-looking FPS games around, the wealth of detail and the variety of stuff to be found is amazing. I see so many terrific photo ops in this game that I could take a thousand, but I guess I have to make the cutoff somewhere :-()

Nah I don't think so. Yeah there's a good chance you'll find relics and sme loot chest there.

FC3 is really better than FC2 in many ways, one of which is the exploration aspect. Not only is it beautful, it also doesn't look samey, and has a lot of interesting locations to explore which was non-existent in FC2.

Hey! I don't have any crabs! :-()

I agree about the game world, it's beautiful and diverse, and I think we could be finding new stuff for ages. There are temple ruins all over the place. I like how the evidence for different periods of history is scattered all over the islands - ancient temples, remains of shipwrecks from different periods, old WW2-era forts, I even found a couple of rusting crash-landed Zeros.

I saw a stingray in the water the other night, and came across a pair of giant tortoises that pulled themselves into their shells when I got close 8) Just when you think you've spotted all the creature types, something new pops up.

This is one of the reasons I like the game so much.  Despite my complaints about the linearity of the main missions, I'm discovering that they are not as annoying to me as I originally thought they would be.  My test of how much I like a game is how often I take time to play it, and if the anticipation of playing gets me excited.  So far, the game is slowly becoming more interesting to me especially when I read of the adventures that many of you are having.
Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: fragger on December 11, 2012, 04:38:09 PM
It was probably the realisation that the main missions were going down the CoD path that distressed me :-() It was like, "Oh no, not this! What have they done?!" Fortunately a lot of the mains aren't real long and as I said elsewhere, once you've done them and know what to expect they'll probably go a lot easier.

There is a ton of fun to be had outside of those, and you can spend hours just driving around taking in the scenery.

Thunderstorms are cool, you can almost smell the ozone in the air :-X

Nice ones all, Art :-X :)

Some of those sunsets are amazing. In fact all the skies in FC3 are strikingly realistic. I've been trying to w@&k out if they're actually parallaxed photos that are subtly swapped when you're not looking to reflect time of day, of if they are in fact fractally generated like FC2's. If so, then it's a remarkable job.

Title: Re: Screenshots

Here's one of those booby-trap situations. Three pirates hang around a burning car:
[smg id=4998 align=center width=600]

Then BOOM! Pirates on toast! The Ratyak are presumably behind these traps, but you never see them putting them in place. You just see the pirates standing around watching it until it blows up. A split second after I took this shot, the guy closest to the car went flying >:D
[smg id=4999 align=center width=600]

This is a fun location, a small township near the centre of the north island. Part of a mission takes place here, where you and a bunch of Ratyak guys ambush some pirates who are transporting Ratyak prisoners and you have to snipe from the top of the water tower (out of frame to the left here), then jump into a truck and chase the APC. I tried to get a screenie of the map location but the map picture didn't come out.
[smg id=5000 align=center width=600]

I took the photo from the top of this church tower (just like Sefapane!) Bad guys seem to keep spawning - well, arriving from outside town, same thing - but not at a rate that becomes overwhelming, just a few at a time. They don't appear to be able to climb ladders so they can't get to you, and unlike the church tower in Sefapane, this one has a window on every side that you can look out of. A fun hold-the-fort fight that can last as long as your ammo holds out (you can always nip out between waves and snaffle the dead guys' ammo, if you have a weapon for it - or take one of theirs).
[smg id=5001 align=center width=600]

Here's why you sometimes get a rude surprise in a river! Spot the croc:
[smg id=5002 align=center width=600]

Here he is:
[smg id=5003 align=center width=600]

They just lie there at the water's edge until something comes close. And that led to one of the coolest things I've seen in the game so far. Shortly after I took this, a goat wandered too close to the water's edge and the croc shot out, grabbed the goat and pulled it under. I thought that was brilliant 8)

Here's another one (it's actually dead, this is after I blasted it with a shottie):
[smg id=5004 align=center width=600]
Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Art Blade on December 14, 2012, 04:30:43 AM
Nice pics man  :) :-X Those crocs are really hard to spot until they jump right at you.

Here is a situation similar to fragger's booby trap pics: I approached and the car was on fire, to the left is a location where locals w@&k and walk around. Then the car blew up and took out the mercs

I'm going to try this weekend, really I am, but the Feed The Beast mods for Minecraft have just so many cool things to build. Made a jet pack and laser last night, more fun. Now to figure out how to tap an oil well, and w@&k up to getting a nuclear reactor going. Though my solar panels are giving me plenty of power for what I need right now.

OK, I guess 20 hours straight, missions only and a few upgrades for being able to carry more than one weapon at least, and you're back to MC. If it takes longer.. like 120 hours straight.. then you might have started to like FC3 without thinking..  ^-^

There's another place where the pirates keep respawning, that dock-type area where you rescue one of your friends - Keith, I think his name is, the scruffy doper with the baseball cap. I can't remember where on the map it is, only that you never run out of pirates there. Another place is the lumber yard, wherever that was - it's too soon in the game to remember where all these places are :-\\

Plus there is a hang glider with which you can get to places about 1.5km away. I like to fast-travel there and make use of all of the above  :)

I haven't seen the orange jellyfish, but the white ones definitely sting - I swam into this one on purpose to make sure :-() It's actually a box jellyfish, if you look closely at the picture you can see how the tentacles are in four clusters spaced around the edge of the body. So, being one of the most toxic creatures on the planet with the ability to inflict about the most excruciating pain a human being can know it really should have emptied more than just one bar of my health meter. More like all but one, I and I should have come out of the water screaming my head off and been in hospital for weeks, if not actually been paralyzed in the water and drowned :-\\

But then if I can eat AK-47 rounds, get cooked by Molotovs, survive grenade blasts from three metres away and fend off tigers and crocodiles then a piddling little blob of clear jelly blubber isn't going to slow me down much :-()

Comparing the PC version to the PS3... all I can say is "WOW".  The graphics are crisper, and aiming is so much more realistic using the mouse.  This is the same I experienced in the difference between the PC and PS3 versions of FC2.  It is like playing a modded game from the start, and I don't even have any mods installed yet.

I've used my Setpoint applet to map my mouse buttons to frequently-used functions, and even my combat proficiency is much better on the PC.

I can tell you're enjoying it, nice pics, too :)

The pic with Dennis driving the technical reminds me of my first playthrough and I thought the same. :) Hang gliding is indeed cool again, as it used to be in FC1. If you're brave and crazy, use the hang glider to crash into the top of an unlocked radio tower.. saves you the climbing  :-D

Not at all, PZ. I used two syringes of animal repellents and kept running after the bear trying to cook him dead in the process but it didn't w@&k. While I was chasing him trying to keep the flame on his bum, someone else (no time to turn around to see who it was or the bear would escape) was running behind me shooting at the bear and the both of us didn't succeed in killing him. When the repellent expired, the bear immediately mauled me and I had to use another syringe and a shotgun to finally finish him off.

The Medusa mission... with a twist

I think this might be fraggers cave (I remember fragger mentioning something about an alternate path but not the particulars).  In any case, this is a cave where you pick up a relic and then continue through the cave until you are on a perch high above the Medusa.  You are not close enough to start the game, but you can kill people with your sniper, without triggering the "Failed mission" message  >:D
[smg id=5056 width=400 align=center]

This is the map location
[smg id=5057 width=400 align=center]

As you can see, you can tag the targets of interest
[smg id=5058 width=400 align=center]

This poor schmuck sent up dozens of flares while I was there, but no reinforcements arrived.  I kept it up until I ran out of sniper rounds and then tried to go down, Art's sideways method.  Once I got close enough to trigger the mission start, the game immediately informed me that I had failed because I had alerted the guards.

Maybe so... but it was worth it  >:D

I just love open world games!

[smg id=5061 width=400 align=center]

The view from here is stunning
[smg id=5062 width=400 align=center]

Next, I dove down from the cliff top into the water and swam toward the first operator to loot the key
[smg id=5063 width=400 align=center]

After looting all three keys, I'm now on top of the ship with the radio room objective.  I only had to knife kill 3 welders to get to this point.
[smg id=5064 width=400 align=center]

The waterfall high on the mountain is where I originated my attack - this is the cave exit from the relic obtained earlier.

 I know... modding for me is just about as good as playing the game itself.  >:D

On an aside, the Medusa mission embodies  what I liked best about FC2 open missions.  You can approach from a variety of perspectives, but I didn't expect this vantage point from a relic quest considering the linear nature of many of the other missions.  Makes me want to explore other options in remaining missions.

Title: Re: Screenshots

This is an example of a mission that starts out open world in the best sense, and then turns into a CoD run-and-gun.  I originally really disliked it, but then played on the PC and it is much better despite the linear nature of the center section of the mission.

Mission: Prison Break-In

I started the prison break in mission on a jet sky, and found the mouth of this tunnel.  I couldn't resist this side tripThis is the location of the mouth of the tunnel.Hang gliding over the camp where Jason is to kill the commander and take the key to the prison
[smg id=5068 width=200 align=center][smg id=5069 width=200 align=center][smg id=5070 width=200 align=center]
I figured the best place to scope things out would be this sniper platform.  No one was in it, so it was easy to make my way up without alerting anyone. There he is... I'll take out everyone else first starting with the perimeter, and then working my way in.  After I shot a few, one pirate got a glimpse of me and they started up, but they were no match for the suppressed AK47.Here's where the mission becomes linear, I made my way through the cave and Vaas hit me over the head.  When I came to, here is what I saw.
[smg id=5071 width=200 align=center][smg id=5072 width=200 align=center][smg id=5073 width=200 align=center]
Neglected to take photos during the escape, but when Liza and I exited the hotel, here was an opportunity.  We ran to the Jeep, Liza drove and I rode in the back. The hotel burned nicely and collapsed to the ground, then the pirates started chasing us in vehicles. It was my job to use a grenade launcher on the pursuers - easy w@&k using the mouse (I had a problem with this on my PS3).
[smg id=5074 width=200 align=center][smg id=5075 width=200 align=center][smg id=5076 width=200 align=center]
Liza is frightened to within an inch of her life and is seriously concerned about what to do.We finally escaped all the bad guys and made it back to Docs mansion where Liza is to stay in the cave with Daisy.Once inside the cave, reunion time with Daisy!.
[smg id=5077 width=200 align=center][smg id=5078 width=200 align=center][smg id=5079 width=200 align=center]
My first job was to find a part and bring it to Daisy - doesn't this look familiar?... how about now?  In particular, this image and the last one qre quite reminiscent of the barge in FC2.Because this was my first time in the cave, I decided to go after the relic in the back side tunnel of the cave.  I knew a bear would be waiting, so I pulled out the trusty flamethrower.
[smg id=5080 width=200 align=center][smg id=5081 width=200 align=center][smg id=5082 width=200 align=center]

Meeting Citra

I love flying in the hang glider.  Here I'm on my way to my first meeting with CitraCitra certainly holds a spell over these guysShe has that "bad girl" demeanor about her.

I found this large boat that looked like a PT boat.  It is equipped with what looks like a .50 cal that is devastating.  Tanking only a few rounds, enemy boats explode furiously.  In this set I had just left Citra's place and walked tot he shore where the boat was waiting.  My intent was to sail up the eastern shore, and I encountered many of these enemy gunboats, none of which even got off a shot.

Title: Taking outposts
Post by: PZ on December 22, 2012, 10:43:31 PM
One of my favorite past times is to liberate outposts, and here is one on the eastern shore of the northern map.  I've done two so far, and the first one was a piece of cake.  It was near the tower on the southern tip of the island, and all I did was to shoot the cage containing the tiger.  He killed everyone in the outpost and I was rewarded with 1500 XP.  >:D

In the series below I was using the Z93 with suppressor, large clip, and high powered scope.  Starting on the southern end of the outpost, I took out the pirates on the dock, then worked my way east to tag all the pirates.  The mod I'm using shows their body silhouette but not the orange tag above their head.

I must say that it is really nice to have the large sniper available before the southern island is available.  It is expensive $3,400, and the attachments are well over $1,000, but it is worth every penny.  Those pirates with the armor and helmets are no match for the big round.  I also went hunting for Komodo dragons - needed their skin for one of the pouches - was able to snipe 3 in only a few minutes.

My next purchase once I've saved enough pennies: the ACE  >:D

Tagging the enemy
[smg id=5091 width=400 align=center]

Shooting a propane tank set the place ablaze.  Surprisingly the pirates still did not sound alarm, likely because they had not seen me yet.
[smg id=5092 width=400 align=center]
[smg id=5093 width=400 align=center]

Checking out the area once more before I try to sneak in and disable the alarms
[smg id=5094 width=400 align=center]

Done!  Man, these outposts are fun in a true open world sense.  All I used was about 6 Z93 sniper rounds.
[smg id=5095 width=400 align=center]

thanks, PZ :) The truck is mere decoration, check the mini map in the pics. The "car" symbols are for drivable cars left and right while the truck is just part of the airstrip layout. By the way, I've found two more of those, one is right down the parallel road to the airstrip between those barracks, the other one on the compound of some oil/gas refinery where the mission Black Gold takes place.

I got it mixed up: actually I played around with the blow torch FIRST and only after that did I shoot a hole into the truck. But I reckon you guys guessed as much :) The rest that I wrote is correct, though, I uploaded the pics in reverse order.

A shot through the camera of a vulture flying. Nothing special really, but notice the shiny flashing point on the beach near the boat. I've seen these a few times, do they mean anything? Is there something there worth looking at? Or are they just decoration?

[smg id=5219]

And one of the unlucky soldiers from the dog tag retrieval mission. Strange, I was just in that bunker a little while before and that body wasn't there.

Title: Re: Screenshots

I'm not sure what the bright flashes mean, but they are reminiscent of sniper glass reflections in other games.  I've sometimes encountered up to half-dozen of these flashes in certain areas, but have not yet discovered the source.
Title: Re: Screenshots

I think they may be just decorative.
Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Art Blade on December 29, 2012, 02:06:35 AM
At first I thought it might hint relics and loot chest but I never managed to check the exact locations (usually those lights are far away) so indeed I too think they're mere decorations.

I thought the same, D_B, when I found that dog tag soldier. I had been there before, like you, and the dog tag mission must have miraculously slapped that soldier on the steps who has been dead for 60+ years. I wonder where they had kept him until that mission started.. yuck. :)

Yeah, I did get back to that spot where I saw the flash and there was nothing there, but it was quite a bit of time later, so maybe if you get there right away, there might be something? There were no pirates or anything in that area, as I'd already cleared it.

The Japanese soldier bodies should already be there, and you should be able to pick up the dog tags, then when you meet the guy, give them to him. Having the bodies all of a sudden appear is a bit weird.

New pics, first, some locals doing some target practice, note they are not clones, some have different color pants and different tattoos!

[smg id=5228]

and another sweep view after clearing a radio tower. It was nice to get a hint of some pirates trying to sneak up on me. My silenced sniper rifle gave them a lesson in manners.

Fun pics guys.  I've been too busy trying to keep my skin intact to spend much time snapping screen shots and too involved in remembering important things like my name and where I left my pants last night to recall the steps to compress shots and then OWG forum codes to post them if I did capture any good screenies.  :-[
Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Art Blade on December 31, 2012, 07:27:16 AM
if you use irfanView, open the screenshot location ( HD:\Users\mandru\Documents\My Games\Far Cry 3\Screenshots\ ) and load a pic. Then CTRL+R for Resize (see left part of the screenshot), make it 1024 and OK. Then hit S for Save, look down at the open dialog, make sure to choose to save as JPG, and check the checkbox below "Show Options Dialog" so you get to see the little window (see right part of the screenshot) and adjust to "85" (compresses a lot yet keeps still enough detail).

The forum does the rest: while you're composing a post, check the icons menu bar above the smileys, second row, 5th icon (shows two cascading pics, blue sky in the background, sunset in the foreground). "Select which album you want to upload this item to" on the top of the pop-up window and then only click on "File to upload" > BROWSE button. Take your pick, submit. That's it, the forum will automatically embed that uploaded picture, so you can just submit your post :)

Like this:

If you remember my screenshots from Call Of Juarez, I shot down a vulture with the bow, will have to try that in FC3. Even though the feathers are almost worthless, nice target practice anyway.

Yep, that's it....  :-D

Now.... on my way to liberate an outpost, came across this rabid dog attacking some pirates, he took out four or five, maybe more since I didn't see the entire fight, before they finally took him out.

[smg id=5255]

Then, Artificial Dumbness at w@&k, this group tried to drive across a bridge that wasn't there, got stuck. Two guys got out and started walking, but the other two kept getting back in and trying to drive off, then getting out when it didn't w@&k, then got back in.....

[smg id=5253]

One of the iron beam dudes. He was spinning in place at the top of this cliff. Finally, when the A.D. guys (see above) started shooting at a leopard or something, he finally dropped it and wandered around. I nudged the beam off the cliff, hoping to hit some deer below but it missed.

[smg id=5254]

After a while, I eventually made it to the outpost and liberated it in typical messy fashion. I think they might have noticed that I hit one of those propane tanks and lit half the place on fire. Maybe.

@ D_B:  :-D that fire there.. maybe it wasn't clear enough. Next time you might want to make sure and set the entire surrounding on fire before lobbing Molotovs into the outpost. You could still shout, "FIRE!" just for additional safety. :-D

This reminds me of the one diamond case in FC2 where you find it after someone else has already gone to the trouble of digging it up. These guys dug up three cases and didn't bother to open them, so I did them a favor and took the loot for myself.

[smg id=5257]

Then right after that I crossed the river and almost got eaten by a crocodile (or are they alligators?) then a little while later at the lumber yard, I did get eaten by one. Sneaky devils. So I skinned a few in payback.

and, last for tonight, Binnatics reminds us who's the boss.

Here's an interesting one.  Looks like a trommel used to mine gold, however, it is used to concentrate gold by feeding thousands of yards of gold-rich gravel through it's maw.  In the foreground are ore carts typically used in hard rock mining (tunnels), which processes ore by an entirely different method.  I haven't seen both types of equipment on the same mining site.

What's your system setup, fragger? Maybe we can narrow things down to a fixable cause. Mine started when I installed the new video card and the latest drivers. I'm thinking it's the drivers that FC3 doesn't like. I'm also sure it's a problem with FC3 as I have no problems with any other games. If I knew for sure, I'd downgrade to a driver that I knew worked.
Title: Re: Screenshots

nVidia likely knows there is an issue with the drivers because they have issued yet another update that among other things addresses FC3 issues.

Here's what I'm running D_B:

OS: W7 Home Premium w/SP1
CPU: Intel i7-2600 @3.4GHz
RAM: 16GB
Vid: nVidia GeForce GT 545
       Driver v.267.95
       RAM: 4GB
       Running under DX11

As you can see, I haven't upgraded my drivers for a while :-[ Maybe the game is just finicky about what kind of video setup it likes. I'm thinking of going to DX9 and mucking around with the game's video settings some more. PZ's tip about the new drivers was sounding hopeful, but if you've already got those then the prob might still lay elsewhere.

Last night it hung on me while I was trying to exit. I mean, I got all the way to the final "Are you sure you want to exit?"-type question, went OK - and it hung there, showing the splash backdrop with a bunch of overlapping black oblongs in the middle.

DKM2 was having all sorts of trouble with crashes too, maybe if he sees this he could let us know what he's running.

@durian, I've had that happen too, but the last time I did that mission the guy caved while the other two did nothing. Seems to be a bit of a lottery :-()
Title: Re: Screenshots

hehe, what you see in the previous pic is of course not an ignited gaseous output that popped Sam's trousers but a cutscene from a FC3 MP type called "firestorm" when a plane drops napalm or some such. :)

What PZ is referring to is this, which took a few IEDs and random explosives on site: :-D

I don't know what happened to the wheels. All I know is that the truck motor died and the rig became undriveable, and when I got out it looked like this (oh, and I had to beat the flames out on my arms). I couldn't see the missing wheels anywhere. Lot of damage for a bottle of burning petrol and a pirate cadaver.

After installing the 306.97 drivers, the game is a bit more stable. Still crashes, mind you, but now it will run 30-40 minutes before crashing instead of 10-15 (if I was lucky) on the other drivers.

Anyway, driving around grabbing loot, seeing what there is to see, and causing trouble, and I came up on a couple guys standing near their jeep. The one was skinning a boar in the middle of the road (bet you can guess where this is going) and the other was wandering around. Along comes a bunch of their buddies in another jeep and they smear the guy in the road without even stopping. The other guy is obviously distraught, but I calm him down a bit by looting his friend's body. Don't mind me, just robbing the dead - $1 yoink! Thanks buddy! Anyway, I get back in my jeep and I hear another coming down the road. Thinking I'm about to witness another hit and run, I take a photo to give to the police to assist in their inquiries (and to prove I had nothing to do with it):

[smg id=5477]

The jeep keeps coming and the guy ducks just in time:

[smg id=5478]

You can just barely see his head on the other side of the front bumper.

[smg id=5479]

He brushes it off and goes back to wandering around. He was off the road when the second jeep came by, so no danger of a hit and run there.

Cool pics you guys 8)

The game has its share of crummy drivers. The other night I was on foot above a road on the south island when I heard some gunfire, and around the bend came a trio of Rakyats in a technical who were going hell-for-leather, apparently trying to get out of range of the gunfire. They did - through the guardrail and over a cliff. I heard much tumbling and crashing followed by an explosion, and when I looked it was a fiery mess down there :-D

Post by: Dweller_Benthos on January 23, 2013, 07:19:50 PM
There were actually more with the bird, but I thought that would get the point across. Maybe I'll make the sequence an animated GIF.

Anyway, Art replaces Binnatics on the red rock doohicky by the lumber yard. I was having fun and the game was actually running a while but then just as I was attacking some pirates who had some hostages, it did something different, it hung and I could switch out but had to end the process as it wouldn't respond.

[smg id=5506]

Then, a while later, I came across this guy who either had some bad fish (note his fishing pole on the ground) or was still sleeping it off from last night, as he was rolling on the ground moaning. I think the developers missed an opportunity here for a side mission, one that's not marked on the map, kinda like repairing the jeep for the guys broken down on the road. Get this guy some of the special plants that cure hangovers or something.

[smg id=5507]

A little while later it blue screened, but I did get almost 2 hours in tonight with only a few crashes.

If you step a few feet away from the guy moaning and writhing side to side and unload a burst of rounds into the ground he perks right up.  ;)

Thinking of explosives, has anyone tried shooting planted C4 or mines?

Great photos, everyone  :-X
Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: fragger on January 28, 2013, 05:39:42 AM
I don't know about C4 but you can shoot any mines that have been planted by the enemy, chiefly those ones in the rice paddies where you protect that villager. Ones that you've planted yourself seem to be hit and miss - sometimes I can shoot my own mines and they'll blow up, other times they won't. I think there may be a glitch involved there as sometimes I'll find a dead bad guy near where I planted a mine, but the mine will still be visible and I won't be able to shoot it.
Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Art Blade on January 28, 2013, 08:47:33 AM
I have made about the same observations, fragger, and same goes for C-4. Apparently you have to stay with your mine or C-4 in order to shoot it. Once you leave the area, it's a lottery.  :)
Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: PZ on January 28, 2013, 10:03:18 AM
I thought it might be fun to try to sneak down to an outpost, plant a bunch of C4, then retire to my sniper hide.  Of course I could always use my detonator, but I have more fun using the rifle on explosives  >:D

Wow Art, I wonder if loading up with a syringe of "Untouchable" on the final approach would allow someone to actually pinpoint the rolling bomb placement and remove the need to bail and hope for the best.  It should at least reduce the critical distance from the explosion a player would require before triggering it.

I'll need to check that next time I have an outpost to overwhelm.  :-X

I went to the oil refinery where the mission Black Gold takes place and set up the situation in my thought above.

Popping the Untouchable syringe just before coming into view of the two guards at the front gate I was able to run over both of them and stop my vehicle precisely between the vehicle mounted .50 cal and the tanker truck, step out while taking close fire from all sides and instantly right click to detonate the charges I'd placed on both sides of my vehicle.

While my ears rang and my hearing was momentarily diminished I took no damage. (note in after thought: I wasn't wearing body armor so I failed to see if there was possible damage in that regard)  The guards that were too close when it all went up were removed and I was able to dash over to the nearby alarm box and manually disable it unhampered even though I was still drawing considerable fire.  There was even a bit of spare time remaining to either mop up or scramble for cover before the syringe expired.

So that part of the experiment in my view was a success.

...

I have experienced one drawback when using the Untouchable syringe and that is if an enemy is too close they tend to attempt a knock down move.  They manage to succeed about one time in four.  Even with the skill tree upgrade where the effect of animal attacks and knock downs from enemies are supposed to be diminished the Untouchable syringe does not remove the possibility of that occurring.  I suspect that the skill tree upgrade protects from knock down and that the Untouchable syringe contributes no additional protection from that danger what so ever.

My source material for that suspicion is finding myself in the dirt and seeing stars too many times while being supposedly supercharged.  So keep physical distance from combatants if possible.  With the clock ticking and precious little time if you're like me you don't want to waste any of it laying stunned on the ground.

Excellent mandru :-X Here, have another one :)

Speaking of the fuel depot, I tried PZ's method of tackling it and it worked like a charm. Sam had almost nothing to do - when I got back to him after blowing everything, he was staring into space while still manning his gun and looking very bored...

The attack on Vaas' compound is another situation where it pays to have a couple of Untouchables ready-rolled. I got through the burning building and the subsequent peppering when getting off the roof without taking any damage.

I've been wondering if the devs came up with the idea of the Untouchable syringe knowing that hardcore open-worlders like us would be bugged by the linearity of the main missions and would appreciate being given a way to reduce the pain factor of them :-()
Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: PZ on January 29, 2013, 02:42:41 PM

I didn't mind Vaas' compound too much...

Remember, only YOU can prevent pirate fires!

I was travelling along a road when I saw on the minimap the icon for another vehicle ahead of me. Suddenly, it drifted off to the left and disappeared. I heard a crash and explosion. Stopped and got out, and this is what was left at the bottom of the cliff. Artificial dumbness, anyone? I've seen the bots pull off some fancy maneuvers while driving, be then, they go and do something like this.

@ shot #2: Good going, I never could stand that uppity Gieco Gecko.

@ shot #4: The fun part of that scene is when a local comes bombing through and smears the lot of 'em and never bothers to stop.

A quick note for curiosity seekers.  There is a small illuminated marine light fixture at X:312.7, Y:314.6 (Southern coast of the South island)  hanging in the air a handful of feet beyond the end of the pier without means of visible support.

I'm not sure which is more impressive.  Levitation or power transmission without power lines.  ;D

Thanks, it's nice to be able to actually play now. Stupid memory.

Anyway, somewhere there was the discussion of the mystery loot chest on the small island in the river near the ruins, on the north island. I've found the waypoint marker very useful in finding stuff, helps a lot. I'm now systematically gathering all loot and relics on the north island. This one still bugs me though, it must be buried slightly under the ground or just a glitch, as you can see the waypoint is right there, but there is nothing. I've also noticed that some loot markers on the map are not for chests but for the small piles of cash. I've spent some time on a few looking for a chest when it's actually a much smaller pile of money.

Now we're rolling.  ;D  :-X

I found this manta just cruising down the beach above the water line.

[smg id=5571 type=preview align=center caption="Beach swim1"]

[smg id=5573 type=preview align=center caption="Beach swim2"]

There is a hunter challenge where you kill a set number of a lab created virulent rabid dogs with an RPG.  I found this dog dead when I arrived but it is graphically skinned as burnt wood.  The two slashes on it's belly were from me being too close when I swung my machete.  :-[

[smg id=5572 type=preview align=center caption="Char wood dog"]

I'd mentioned that there was a mysterious floating light fixture at X:312.7, Y:314.6.

[smg id=5574 type=preview align=center caption="floating light1"]

[smg id=5575 type=preview align=center caption="floating light2"]

The second shot of the manta above actually shows the distant shack and pier (to the left) where the floating light lives.  ;)

Edit: sorry I got so excited over being able to post I forgot to give the shots titles when I uploaded them.  I've edited the titles in the gallery but they're not reflecting retroactively.

That's a nice atomic bomb you got there, be a shame if somethin' were to happen to it.

[smg id=5582]

Manhattan Project: Pacific Rim version.

[smg id=5583]

I tossed a grenade in the general direction of these guys and the ammo dump went up, taking out the rest of them. Well, that was easy.

[smg id=5584]

That's a nice ancient temple you got there....

[smg id=5586]

... be a shame if somethin' were to happen to it.

[smg id=5587]

I was fooling around with the blow torch, seeing what could be set on fire. I guess I found out....

[smg id=5589]

I've left so many vehicles on the bottom of rivers....

Why couldn't I just shoot this dog like all the rest?

Yeah, I think the a-bomb is in lost expeditions, I also did testing unit, I think that's where the dog is. I have one more lost expedition to do, then the monkey one, then a bunch of hunting and assassination missions, then some supply drops and then I'll finally be ready to get on with the main missions. I have all the loot and relics, except for the ones in the compound at the east end of the island, and the ones in the temple, plus that annoying fake one in the river on that little island.

Waiting this long to do all those makes them a bit easier as I have the ripper (or is it shredder) SMG that pretty much stops anything with a few rounds. The hunting mission where you have to get three bears and the default gun is that little UZI thing was pretty easy since the shredder takes just a few bursts to stop a bear.

Did the side mission where you have to find the runaway girl for the parents in the village. Five Komodo dragons were no match for that thing.

Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Dweller_Benthos on February 18, 2013, 11:28:33 AM
I forget, what was the ESC key trick? Not that I have problems running out of ammo for it, which is strange for me, as I tend to just "spray and pray" or is that "spray and prey", lol. Usually by the time my loot is nearing full, I head back to the shop and resupply.

The tiger picture?  ???   Isn't that the hunter mission's rare white tiger that's munching your arm as your race starts?

I have noticed that the more I've bet on a race the worse the obstacles are that get thrown at me.  My friend you must've bet the whole taco to get bugger all luck that bad.

Ah yes.  The Ripper.  Great craic.  >:D
Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Art Blade on February 26, 2013, 11:23:30 AM
:)

The tiger? Heh, it happened as follows:

I arrived at the location with that guy who promoted that Jeep race and went afk for a moment. When I returned I heard a tiger roar nearby so I thought, "hell, let's hit it!" And accepted the challenge. It was in that case a practice round without any bet. So after opting for the practice, I stand next to the Jeep, hear the cat sniffing around very close to me and as the countdown starts I think, "this is not going to happen.." -- 2.. 1.. -- GROAR!! -- ..go! "Oh yes, it is."

:-D

After a restart I got a good time and thought hell, I might as well try on Expert and that I won (1:40.0 needed, arrived with 7.5 seconds still left) but I agree, more than once I too thought that the higher the stakes, the weirder the obstacles

You guys are too kind. Not so much tenacious as not wanting to waste that $50 I spent on the game. Heck, I was even contemplating getting a different computer there for a while....

Some of those challenges though, I can't seem to get any headway towards a good score, much less beating anyone else's. I tried the lumberyard one last night, because some yahoo with a [UBI] tag in front of their name knocked Binn or Art off the top spot. "Can't have that" I thought, but didn't even get halfway to the high score on that one, it's tough.

 :-\\

There's got to be some back story on that second attack.  Were you pulled off a quad runner or had you parked your jeep up a tree and were hoofing it to find another ride?

I'll grant you that what ever the conditions both of these screen shots reek of stunning bad luck.

I know from first hand experience that a crock can rip you out of a rubber boat if you are standing up near the edge of it and have the unfortunate luck of having run aground too close to where it's laying in wait and I've never tried stopping near the business end of a crock with a jet ski but I've always assumed some degree of safety at least from wildlife if you were powered up and under way in any of the vehicles.

Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Art Blade on February 28, 2013, 03:48:21 AM
You're spot on, the second pic was taken after my quad gave up on me because I had sort of sunk it and I was wondering whether to... GROAR!! :-D

The next attempt on the same track.. this time I.. no, the beast, ran into me which of course ruined the race but I did give him the honour and personally skinned the ba$t@rd on the spot, though  >:D

[smg id=5622 type=preview align=center caption="2013 02 28 00039"]

Spoiler
While I was in the midst of it I noticed how I got ongoing kill messages and I saw the three car wrecks I just produced with the RPG. I thought that the enemies must be dying from fire spreading and was amused while taking out a chopper. Then I couldn't see any enemies any more but I kept getting kill messages, saw choppers approach and explode without my doing and thought hell, do I now have some Rakyat reinforcements helping me out, there? But nothing, instead I watched how enemies everywhere just kept blowing up while I was simply watching. When the time was up, I had that massive score. Yet another UBI glitch.

Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Dweller_Benthos on February 28, 2013, 06:59:16 PM
Yeah right, is that the one where you are shooting incoming jeeps and copters with the RPG? The dang long reload time is what gets me on that one. I doubt I'd even be trying those again, I've done them all and had a decent run on a few, so on to the actual missions now.

But first, another screenshot of one of my mishaps driving into water. I thought this was just another spot where you can drive across the river, but it turned out to be a bit too deep. When I got out and looked around, saw that I was lucky to have landed on the correct side of where that croc was stationed, if I'd gotten out of the passenger side, would have had some trouble.

Sure ruins a lot of otherwise nice screenshots. I should try to remember to paste from the clipboard in cases like that instead of using the saved screenshot file. Usually clipboard paste is a lot more accurate.

I've tried to get close enough to get a snake with the knife, but they strike before you can slice them.

Title: Re: Screenshots

they're not going to hit an open barn door, so you've got to do it for them. Not a bad thing in case you want to time a screenshot..  :-() By the way, an excellent place for mines is a door frame, about waist or head height.. anyone who walks through.. bears, for that matter, count too (happened to me once, I couldn't believe what was lying in the entrance) :-D

Cool shots guys.  :-X

fragger after seeing the size of the debris field of chopper bits you left behind made me a bit nervous.  I made a trip back to the Rakyat trial rock on that hill top and was somewhat relieved that my name was still up on it.  ;)

Oddly enough instead of the bright white lettering that was present when it was freshly posted my user name had faded to a dull bluish color.

Seeing that fading away reminded me of the Roman's who crowned their heroes with freshly picked and crafted laurel wreaths and proclaimed their deeds to all.  Kind of like a key to the city the wreaths signified to the people both high and common that they had someone among them to admire and shower with drink and food and it was party time to the max for a couple days anywhere the hero went.  But inevitably a hero's wreath starts to tatter and fall apart if they "rest on their laurels" too long.

A wreath in too ratty of condition was more likely to draw belligerent questions like "so, what have you done lately?" instead of another cup of wine.

So, it's probably time for someone to come along and steal my wreath as king of that hill.  Eh?  :-D

You won't ever see my name on any of those because I always play offline. I don't know if my Rakyat trial results get uploaded to Uplay should I login to it, but if so, your fears may be realised - after doing that mission my Uplay name (fragger1960) appeared at the top of the list and on the rock. First time ever! I can't remember what my score was on that Trial, alas.

But seeing as how I haven't logged on to Uplay for some time, the scores at my end are way out of date, so it's very likely you're still the king of the hill.

I had released this bear to help clear an outpost, and he ended up doing most of the w@&k. I went over to thank him, but he ignored me, so I threw a rock at his head. He still ignored me until I got close enough for him to realize I was there. But I had fun pelting him with rocks for a while.

Hmm I think not:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthetic_cannabis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthetic_cannabis)

Synthetic cannabis is a psychoactive designer drug derived from natural herbs sprayed with synthetic chemicals that, when consumed, allegedly mimic the effects of cannabis. It is best known by the brand names K2[1] and Spice,[2] both of which have largely become genericized trademarks used to refer to any synthetic cannabis product. (It is also for this reason that synthetic cannabis is often referred to as spice product, due to the latter.) There is controversy among calling Spice and K2 synthetic cannabis and is considered by some to be a misnomer, because the ingredients contained in these products are mimics, not copies of THC.[3]
Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: fragger on March 21, 2013, 04:31:17 AM
"Synthetic cannabis" is pretty dangerous stuff, there have already been episodes of permanently induced psychoses and even a couple of fatalities caused by it in this country.
Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Dweller_Benthos on March 21, 2013, 08:00:23 AM
I was referring to the "interstellar navigation" part, which is a direct reference to the Dune books/movies where the drug called spice melange http://dune.wikia.com/wiki/Spice_Melange (http://dune.wikia.com/wiki/Spice_Melange) helps those who take enough of it to navigate starships. See http://dune.wikia.com/wiki/Guild_Navigator (http://dune.wikia.com/wiki/Guild_Navigator) for

QuoteA Guild Navigator was a senior rank of artificially super evolved humans within the Spacing Guild, and for many Guildsmen the pinnacle of their ambitions. Mutated through the consumption of and exposure to massive amounts of the spice Melange, Navigators are able to use a mentally conditioned and trained form of prescience to safely navigate interstellar and galactic space in long range starships called Heighliners.

The real drug called spice is pretty nasty.

I did see the Spice formula and I too realised there was a clear Dune reference as pointed out by D_B. Dune=Cool :)

What is a bit disturbing is that this game features tons of drug informations and drug-related stuff everywhere up to visualised trips (red pills in the cave and the mushroom hallucination bit when collecting them for the Doc.)

The pirate in the thongs (thank goodness they're for feet and not the string-back underwear variety  :o ) is a regular corpse that you will find in various locations.

I've never encountered him alive that I'm aware of but after Vaas gives you the cinder block baptism and you come out of the waterfall there's that town area you have to pass through to get to the helicopter.  Later when you come back to visit that area to thrash the respawning pirates that are stationed there the fat heavy with ankles too swollen to fit into boot is usually somewhere there on the right side of the road before the bridge near the buildings.

Always loot him as he's got swag whether you killed him or not.

Unless it's a static shot I'm never fast enough to be able to find and then hit the screen cap button.  :(

I really need a momentary USB foot switch I can tap with a ready and otherwise unengaged toe or maybe by remapping the mouse wheel click function to trigger the Print Screen button to enable me to catch 99 out of 100 of the amusing things that happen during typical game play.  ::)

I believe it comes with practice. I deleted more than 25,000 screenshots for FC2 alone just to get rid of stuff I didn't want to keep. FC3 already sports around 4,000 screenshots. It has become second nature to be ready to hit the screencap key at any given time :-D

When I'm playing I have a death grip on the mouse with my right and there's little hope of reaching cross-hand clear across the keyboard with my left to find and hit the print screen key in time to catch something on the fly.

What a great pic!  Just goes to show you that there are always interesting side adventures in a true open world game.  It is only a shame that the developers decided to go with linear main missions.
Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Art Blade on April 13, 2013, 07:08:34 PM
thank you :)

It was this very photo scene which I wanted to capture as good as possible. Of course I did the usual tricks first such as whipping the machete or switching weapons to time it just right so the weapon wouldn't be in the picture. Only problem is that the entire picture sways with that action and it's never really centred. Also, you can't get too close or you'd hit something. And that made me think about how we kept doing our screenshots all the time.

And then I had the idea with the camera zoom to get the perfect picture if combined with the fact that PRNTSCR removes all HUD elements which was worth a tip in the respective topic. :)

Nice shots, Art, some good LOLs there.

I've been using the camera to get HUD-free screen shots for a while. Works great, you can zoom & compose just exactly what you want. Makes for good detail screens as well.

I shot one of those river fish once, never got a close look at it. Can you get handbook entries on jellyfish and other aquatic life? Every time I see them, I'm swimming and can't get a weapon out to shoot them.
Title: Re: Screenshots

Hehe mandru, I found those pirates hilarious the way I got them in that pic. They were actually practising something like Aikido or Judo, it was a throw. I'll post one that makes it more obvious here. And yes, it was a river fish that got its own entry in the wildlife section of my handbook.

D_B, I transferred the kudos I got for your camera tip to you already, see tips topic  :) I don't know if it works, I never managed to actually kill jellyfish but apparently only what you kill finds its way into the wildlife section of the handbook. The only way to kill stuff like that is TNT-fishing which I did in a way by lobbing hand grenades and C4 into the water where I had seen them.

Here is a way of defending yourself without weapons. Not the guy to the right, though..

D_B, if you look at the animals section of the Stat pages it shows each specific species and the number you've killed.  Some of the animals have a " - " in the totals column while others have a " 0 " (zero).

I read that as;  This animal can't be killed and you haven't killed any of these yet, respectively.  An unlisted animal like many of the unkillable bird species that constantly fly in circles through some of the scenery settings or the airborne insects (damsel flies) I would imagine are considered by the developers to be background props rather than actual animals.

Ah, good choice Art.  Kudos where kudos' due.  :-X

I've also seen the Amanaki practicing hand to hand combat throws.  I don't know Art, the guy on the right appears to be displaying what I would consider to be more of an offensive tactic.  :-D

One request to make things more efficient.  Far Cry 3 native screenshots are in png format, which ends up being about 10 times larger than jpgs, which makes them slow to load and display.  Although it is not a big deal, it is preferable to convert to jpg before upload for performance issues.  ;)

I think a lot of FC2's atmosphere was also based on the sound design, particularly authentic recordings of birds and insects.
Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: fragger on April 21, 2013, 03:06:21 AM
Agree, FC2 had a very rich and realistic ambience. I also miss the wonderful lighting effects, which really did impart a sense of dawn, early morning, midday, late afternoon, twilight and night, as well as lovely atmospheric effects like mistiness, haziness, wetness, etc. The truly fractal weather system was a terrific piece of w@&k and really added to the immersion factor. FC3 weather seems to consist largely of just day, night and stormy. There is a bit of transition between these but it's very quick and not very noticeable, except for the ridiculously abrupt storm onsets (deadline constraints, maybe?) In FC2 you could almost feel the weather 8)

I agree also, in FC2 I mostly travel on foot to experience the so-close-to-real-life nature environment that was created.
Many areas where I go hunting have similar environments as being portrayed in FC2 and I often still play the game because it putting me in the kind of nature that I love and grew up in.   :(

D_B, I tried so many times with  my wingsuit to bloody land there but usually smacked into the wall or plummeted down right next to the landing zone into the water or smeared myself across and along the cliff on the way down and as you can see, I even drove  down which worked nicely (you better use some syringes to survive that if you are so inclined  :-() ) Now I have experience and usually manage to get it right. :)

it only took me some 1060+ hours to find one I could take a screenshot of.  :-D I had happened upon ONE other moray eel a few weeks ago but didn't dare to touch it.. this time it attacked me, quite a strong reaction, actually. It triggered a QTE, forcing me to mash CTRL or F or some such.

Here is the location where I found that moray eel: Near Romeo Camp, dive a bit and check the ground. It hides near rocks on the ground.

Title: Re: Screenshots

I find in looking for eels they are usually are pretty deep in the darker blue water on pop up map.  They first appear as a glow like one of the jelly fishes but they undulate and you have to swim towards them to get within range for them to close in and attack you.  I've had better luck finding eels on the outer coast lines of the two main islands rather than the floor of the sea between the two land masses.

With the command line edit for god mode there is no need for the dive deep syringe giving unlimited search time but be aware they will still trigger the QTE and can kill you if you don't mash the proper button in a timely fashion.  Fortunately the button mash response time in the QTE doesn't seem to be as critical as the speedy reflexes needed in the knife fight with Hoyt and the button is usually a "C" or the Space bar on the PC.  At least as far as I can remember it has always been an easy reach left hand key that is required.
Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Art Blade on April 24, 2013, 07:34:26 AM
Animals are not known for having religions hence they don't have to respect a god  mode  :-D It is true, you are bullet proof but still vulnerable to animal attacks. You could bypass that by adding the ignore player cheat so any animal would ignore you but then again the game's wildlife section of the handbook wouldn't register any encounters with animals you hadn't met before.
Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Dweller_Benthos on April 24, 2013, 07:55:42 AM
So, did you get a page in the wildlife handbook for the moray eel? Might have to go looking for one if that's the case. Same goes for the jellyfish.

I'm not so sure about that Art.  My cat is pretty sure He's the center of the universe and all things exist solely for His exclusive amusement (including his personal hand servants) - therefore He must be God.  ;)

D_B, Yes you do get an entry in the handbook for the moray eel but I think the jellies are background scenery (more or less like the random plankton bits floating around when you are diving) and can't be killed.  So no handbook entry for them.

All it takes to get an animal's profile in the handbook is to kill one.  So running under god mode the animals will attack you and some like the crocks, tigers and morays will trigger a life or death QTE.  Adding ignore blocks QTEs along with animal attacks.  I've tested this by jumping onto crocks and walking up on tigers.  :-D

But in my experience so far I've had to play without the ignore command line edit to trigger the appearance of the morays.  It's almost as if there's a proximity requirement for them to show up and quite possibly the ignore feature prevents that from happening.

This last time I played through I noticed that there is an eel that takes a chomp out of you when you grab the relic in the sunken temple just off shore from the outpost called Kell's Boat Repairs.  The temple is there in that shallow bay on the East side of the North island but all I caught was a quick glimpse of the eel as it came out from behind the relic and it did not trigger a QTE.

 Priceless :-X That's why I love cats ^-^

About the ability to kill animals... when you point at a manta ray the cross-hair turns red, which means you can kill it. So far I haven't killed one. Do you get a page in the book when doing so?
Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: mandru on April 24, 2013, 09:44:58 AM
Yes Binn, mantas do get a page in the handbook when you kill one but like rats or those little green lizards you can't skin them. You would think that Ray Skin would fetch a fairly attractive price when traded in.  ????
Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Art Blade on April 24, 2013, 10:01:49 AM
agree on the cats bit  :-D

I did see a moray eel with ignore player cheat but couldn't kill it because it wouldn't attack me hence no QTE that would have killed it. A pack of C4 might have done the trick but I haven't tried that out. I did throw and detonate hundreds of C4 (unlimited ammo cheat) from a ship which blew up manta rays and sharks but no jellyfish. I am pretty sure that the first river fish I saw and killed with C4 was while I was on ignore player cheat and it didn't produce a handbook entry -- unless I missed something else, that was why I have thought that the ignore player cheat ignored animals that got killed while on it.

I've been giving something PZ said some thought.

Quote from: PZ on April 22, 2013, 08:11:11 PM
Cool; I've not seen a moray in FC3 before.

I've been spending a lot of time recently searching out the new missions that become available when the outposts are reset.  That said I have circumnavigated both Islands N. & S. and the nearby hill sides with zero luck beyond that first mission I found near Pirate's Cove.  :-\\   So I know they exist.

But back to PZ's not having encountered a Moray.  I came across a spot just East of the Medusa site where I was able to see two Morays at once while still in shallow enough water to use the camera (what I would say was ankle deep and if I wasn't such a procrastinator I'd have the screen caps ready to post here  :(  ).  When you leave the Medusa site headed East the next nearby landmark is a shack with a small pier attached and there is a large cave entrance in the cliff off a ways landwards.

Walking East a very short distance from that shack and watching the water line the first place where the water pushes further inshore (in a gentle arc) is the top of a softly rounded gully that runs out into the ocean spreading as it descends.  It's excellent eel hunting territory but remember to add the eel to your handbook you'll have to go through a QTE and kill one though they are fairly safe to view at a distance.  :)

By the way, check the pistol again and compare both pics. Do you notice the first (FC3) screenshot has a much slimmer rear part of the pistol, as if stretched vertically, while the second (steam) shows it nice and bulky as it should be?  ????

Thylacines?  :o

They are not even listed in the bestiary of the player's guide!  Where on earth did you find those?

Maybe not the best question as I recognize the location is just down the hill from Cradle View outpost but I've been through there dozens of times on foot and I've never seen them.  I suspect someone's been digging around in the guts of the programming again to shake them out of some sealed folder.
Title: Re: Screenshots

no, they came as part of a pre-order bonus, a "hunter pack" I believe. Despite not having pre-odered it, I still got the pack. Also, the predator silenced sniper rifle (basically a modified M700) and some Amanaki knife for machete.

I once walked all the way to the top of the highest point on the north island. Nice view, but the screenshots didn't turn out too well, the view distance bugged out or something. Then I had to get down from there, but I think that was back in the crashy days and it just respawned me back at some random radio tower.

I guess quick reply isn't working again. Oh well.

Art, I've got the DL codes for that Hunter Pack, and a couple of others (Monkey Business or whatever it was called, and that thing about the abandoned Japanese lab). They came with the Insane Edition. I never got around to DLing them...

Thylacines have been considered extinct since about 1930, but some have been reported as being seen on mainland Oz in more recent years, even lately (originally they only inhabited Tasmania, where they were also known as Tasmanian Tigers because of their stripes, even though they aren't cats at all but marsupials). It's possible some were captured in the colonial days and brought to the mainland where they either escaped or were let loose. I'd like to think there are still some around. Odd creatures, kind of half kangaroo, half dog. I'd like to see one myself.

cool pic. :)

Fragger, at least dl the hunter pack. The missions.. meh.. probably a massive download for singular missions (I have those too). The hunter pack will give you a nice "predator" sniper rifle from start (always there) as well as a not so useful knife without known advantages over the others (therefore I bet the Tanto is much better as it is known to have extra powers) and finally, the ever present thylacines. You'll encounter them always around the lighthouse in the North and at the Pacific Airport in the South. They may pop up in other places, too. :)
Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: PZ on August 28, 2013, 01:35:18 PM
Do we have a list of the downloadable content for FC3?  I have some of it - the Monkey Business one and I think the Japanese lab, but nothing else.
Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Art Blade on August 28, 2013, 03:41:58 PM
Everyone who has got FC3 may see those DLCs when logging in with UPlay. There are no DLCs other than what you may "buy" from UPlay after achieving some UPlay credits. The hunter pack and perhaps this or that type of mission are limited to those who got them with whatever pre-order bonus.
Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: mandru on August 28, 2013, 05:59:27 PM
And some who pre-ordered the game in March to be sure to get all the promised extra game content were totally cheated and got none of it because the deal didn't count towards the PC version of FC3 (or AC3 for that matter which I also payed for at the same time) but didn't discover the rip off until it was released in December.  :'(

This flaming idiot got himself stuck in a loop:

[smg id=6244 align=center width=600]

[smg id=6245 align=center width=600]

He was on fire and kept repeating the same sequence of actions. He would get into the car, start it, sit there for a couple of seconds, turn the engine off, get out, stand next to the car for a couple of seconds, say "FAAAARK!", then get back into the car and repeat the whole performance. He was doing his Balrog impression the whole time.

I watched him go through it about six times and he probably would have done it ad infinitum if I'd let him. In the end I threw a C4 under the car and put him out of his misery.

The devs make a slight mistake with the dingos in FC3 - in reality, they don't bark. However they do howl to announce where their territory is, so the devs did get that right.
Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Art Blade on September 12, 2013, 11:14:33 AM
lol @ bark.me.

I thought that, too, but apparently we're both wrong, fragger. Check wiki (dingo, § "barking") (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dingo#Barking)

QuoteCompared to most domestic dogs, the bark of a dingo is short and monosyllabic, and is rarely used. Barking was observed to make up only 5% of vocalisations. Dog barking has always been distinct from wolf barking.

Australian dingoes bark mainly in swooshing noises or in a mixture of atonal and tonal sounds. In addition, barking is almost exclusively used for giving warnings. Warn-barking in a homotypical sequence and a kind of "warn-howling" in a heterotypical sequence have also been observed. The bark-howling starts with several barks and then fades into a rising and ebbing howl and is probably (similar to coughing) used to warn the puppies and members of the pack. Additionally, dingoes emit a sort of "wailing" sound, which they mostly use when approaching a wateringhole, probably to warn already present dingoes.

According to the present state of knowledge, it is not possible to get Australian dingoes to bark more frequently by putting them in contact with other domestic dogs. However, German zoologist Alfred Brehm reported a dingo that learned the more "typical" form of barking and how to use it, while its brother did not. Whether dingoes bark or bark-howl less frequently in general is not certain.

Nice shots Art.  :-X

I've seen cassowaries attack and kill dogs and for balance sake I've also seen dogs charge and kill a cassowary so there's not a clear predator/prey boundary.

Probably something more along the lines of whoever gets the initiative roll but anyway I don't recall if I've ever seen an interaction between any other predators to compare notes.  :-\\

as far as I can tell there seem to be carnivores that never attack one another (e.g. cassowaries and Komodo dragons) but chase other carnivores, sometimes even in a joint venture  :-D Usually I don't have the opportunity to observe because at that time those beasts prey me or I'm busy doing something else :)

Firstly: Cheers for the vid Art :-X I knew that dingos do make a kind of bark but it's more of a "hrrrngff" - not really a doggie "woof" like FC3's dingos.

That dingo in the vid looked like he'd realised that he'd bitten off more than he could chew and decided he'd go after fleas instead :-()

I first thought that this guy was practicing his golf swing, but he's actually wielding a hoe. I guess he misses touching the sweet, sweet grass of home...
[smg id=6397 align=center width=600]

Jonathan Livingston, I presume?
[smg id=6398 align=center width=600]

"He flew through the air, with the greatest of ease..."
[smg id=6399 align=center width=600]

There's got to be a clever line here somewhere, but I can't think of one. Caption contest, anyone?

If you come back after completing the mission where you burn the fields you can see Amanaki warriors using the hoes and tending the fields. Never let a good business opportunity go to waste eh?  ;)

Caption contest:

* Putting his money where his mouth is*
* Being bullish on the FC franchise*
*Horning in on Hoyt's profits*
*Having counted her money one of Rook Islands more attractive prostitutes gives you the go ahead*

I think I'll stop there.  >:D

my favourite place to wreak havoc - the compound. With Ziggy's mod 2.7 we can place unlimited mines and C-4 rather than three of each. All of them (you get 10 max each) remain active.. if you use the unlimited ammo cheat it is possible to drop like 30 mines around the place.. it was fun to hear them go off every now and then and I went checking what set them off. Sometimes mercs, sometimes animals.. but always a nice bang to it  :-D

There's been so many other incidents that would have made funny screenies but I wasn't quick enough on the keyboard to capture them :D Like the time I was driving along a road at the base of a small cliff when a technical landed right in front of me from out of the blue and spat out several red-shirted rag dolls ??? Very shortly before that I'd heard the sounds of a confrontation between Rakyat and pirates coming from somewhere, and I assume the pirates lost control of their vehicle near the top of the cliff and went over the edge, almost landing on top of me. I wasn't expecting it at all, the car just dropped down from above and went crash right in front of me. Hilarious :-()

This was new for me. I'd always thought the snakes just lay coiled up hissing in the grass and would bite you if you got too close. But this one actually came slithering after me:

[smg id=7201 align=center width=600]

As you can see, it was one of those highly dangerous levitating snakes.

When you are running the mission to assault Pirate Cove there is one snake that is actively crawling around.

I've encountered him several places on the South side of the cove.  It's usually at a point of the game where I'm in stealth mode and my full attention is more closely directed towards sneaking up on and removing the two legged snakes while keeping them from detecting me.

Thanks chaps :) I thought I'd follow your suits - kind of - with a new avatar, of myself.

Years ago when I was heavily into Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri (with the expansion pack Alien Crossfire), I discovered that I could substitute my own picture for any of the default Faction Leader images that appeared in the game's Diplomacy Screen. I liked playing as a seafaring faction called the Nautilus Pirates, so for fun I cobbled together an image of myself wearing a facsimile of space-age pirate garb and stuck it into the AC graphics file. I sported a beard back then and I tried to make myself look like the kind of mean, treacherous ne'er-do-well that you wouldn't trust as far as you could spit a rat. That was just for fun  - in reality I'm about as mean as a tranquilized manatee and you can definitely trust me at least as far as you could expectorate a rodent.

I'd forgotten I still had this silly image until quite by chance I came across it a couple of nights ago, and you guys have encouraged me to make use of it here - even though it's not exactly a natural picture of myself. Gord may look distinguished, but when seen au naturel (and up close) I tend to look more extinguished :-()

:-D I remember that one well :-X Also another member, Ricamundo, used an avatar of himself - and as I recall, he was hoisting an ale in it, à la Binnatics.

Haven't heard from him in quite a while... ????

Back on topic - here's a few more pics I've had for a while but haven't posted, since I seem to be about the only one here still playing this game...

This is about as close as you'd want to get (actually, it's a zombie leopard - he was dead but apparently he didn't realize it).

Whatever it is he's sniffing, he must like it a lot.

Judging by the entry wound, I'd say this rat was hit by a 0.002 calibre round.

This just had to hurt.

I went into the gun shop in Badtown, but the lady with the shottie wasn't behind the counter:

Instead, she was hanging out the back with this hen-pecked dude. I've struck this a couple of times - once, I found her wandering around outside the front door.

Even in death he landed on his feet.  ;)

he might have just been stubborn enough to ignore the water and drowned standing. And he ignored that, too.  :-D
