Title: Predecessor Mission
Post by: shiba on March 27, 2009, 03:58:49 AM
Hi guys !
I'm deep in the Far Cry 2 game and I can't stop playing it.
I check on the web and there are a lot of very interesting informations but I still got a question :
What's that predecessor Mission thing ? I checked the map and I went to the place where the white letter is but I couldn't find anything, so what am I supposed to do ?

Thanks

You need to activate the predecessor missions first. That is done by entering certain codes into the main menu screen, I think under additional content or something like that.

Here's a quick list of codes I found:

Awakened Hinata
sa7eSUPR
tar3QuzU
THaCupR4
6aPHuswe
96CesuHu
SpujeN7x

I never saw that "Awakened Hinata" one before, so I have no idea what that one does. Some of those may w@&k, some may not, depending on your platform again.

If you're on PC, you can just edit the registry:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ubisoft\Far Cry 2]
"PartnerKey1"=dword:00000001
"PartnerKey2"=dword:00000001
"MachetesKey"=dword:00000001

That will give you the predecessor missions and the extra machete types. Just copy that text, paste it into an empty notepad document, then save it somewhere you can find it, and give it a .reg extension, not .txt like notepad defaults to, and double click the resulting file. It will ask you if you want to add the info to the registry, say yes, and it will be done. Once in the game, you may have to wait a bit for the missions to be activated. If you're still in the north (you can go back if you want, these are the only missions that will be available if you're already in the south) and go to town and you should get a phone call telling you where to go to pick up the mission envelope. Same goes for the south, once it's active, the envelope icon will appear at the post office.

Once you've picked up the envelope look for the white mission marker and go find the tape there.  I can't remember if you have to keep getting the envelope though...my memory is failing.

Okay I understand, I play the game using the Xbox360 version, I'll try one of the code you gave me ! Thanks for it !

spaceboy is correct, you keep looking for the white envelope icon, or sometimes you get a phone call.  The white envelope icon is seen at a shack north of the southeast bus stop in Leboa, and it is found at the post office in Bowa.  I have managed to do 7 of these missions on a regular basis, but I don't know if there are possibly more of them.  Each has a specific name (like The Bolivian) and they will be listed on your statistics page in the game under "Predecessor tapes" - you can replay the tapes much like the Jackal tapes.

Okay I understand.
I went to the shack close from the bus stop that you mention, but I couldn't find anything. Guess I first have to use the codes and then I'll be able to do them ! :)

Correct,
Be sure to check your main map first though.  Unless you see the white envelope icon on your main map, there is nothing to do.  They only appear once in a while.

Old topic, long time no reply, but until today it has never been disclosed how to unlock the predecessor missions using the xBox360.

Thanks to our member eor123 we now know. Please read on here (http://openworldgames.org/owg/forums/index.php?topic=1243.msg19184#msg19184)  :)

Nice catch Art.  :)

I don't think Ive come across his thread before and in the first couple posts Dweller_Benthos describes how to get the different machete edit to w@&k so I'll have to try that finally.

:)

It was incredible, the first time I saw a pic or vid with a different machete. Thanks to D_B, ever since I learned about that reg edit, I never used the default machete again.

This is what I have learned (with the help of several members here):

In order to unlock the additional missions on the XBox 360 platform:

Select "Additional Content" in the Far Cry II Main Menu.

Select "Promotional Content" in the "Additional Content" sub menu.

Enter the following password:

6aPHuswe

Repeat the above with the additional password

96CesuHu

If successful you will get a confirmation that additional missions have been unlocked.

There were several codes listed in an earlier post but these are the only two that were accepted as valid passwords by my XBox 360.

Hope this helps.

The info was out there but I couldn't find specific instructions for my platform.

I'm assuming the steps to unlock the missions on other platforms are identical with the exception of the codes that will be accepted.

Yeah, I saw a list of 8 or 10 codes once, probably mixed for all platforms, about 3 or 4 worked on the PC. There were several promotions from various retailers and hardware companies as well. The Intel promotion for the PC was a 6MB download - all it did was add a couple registry entries, lol. Could have done that, well, actually I did do the same thing with about 5 lines of text that I posted here for a registry file.

Hi. I just registered, having stumbled across this forum and this specific post while trying to solve my own FC2 issue.  First of all, I love openworld-style games/sims, so it's great to know about this place.

On to the point.  I am running the Steam version of FC2 (Windows Vista 64-bit) with the Fortunes Pack.  I had initially purchased the Gamestop Preorder DVD version, and had that working with the bonus missions just fine.  However I then purchased the Steam version, uninstalled the DVD version and installed the Steam version.  Now I am unable to get the bonus missions to w@&k.  I tried the registry fix noted above, and adjusted the location since Steam games are installed in a Steam folder (not Ubisoft).  Well the machete textures did show up, however I still see no indication that the bonus missions are working.  The map legend still shows no envelope icon, I have received no phone call, and nothing new shows up on the map.

Is there anything else I might try?  I did try inputting all 13 codes I have come across regarding these missions, but none of them are valid for me.  I tried my original code, too, of course, which was SpujeN7x (one of the 13 I've found here and elsewhere).  The codes mentioned in this thread are among the 13 I'd found.

Any suggestions?  I've tried the Ubisoft forums, Steam forums, Steam support, and Ubisoft support.  One of the other forums directed me here.
Thanks!

Interesting problem Rangoon - I've not encountered this before and therefore cannot offer a solution.  One thing you might try is loading a different saved game, or perhaps one of the saved game packs uploaded here at OWG by some of our members.

I have encountered the phone message at different times in various plays through, but I can't explain the variance - sometimes the call never even happens even though I see the envelope icons.  I recall one time I received the call when I was heading into Mosate Selao (main town in Bowa, the south) and had not heard it all when in Leboa (the north).

Good luck on a solution, and in any case, welcome to OWG - hope you find much useful information on enjoying FC2 (and other games)  :-X

First of all, welcome to OWG, Rangoon :)

(note to self: don't get started about STEAM)

OK, let's see if we can help you. The first thing I found was you on another forum and the reply that led you here  ;D ;D ;D

I tried hard, but didn't find anything you hadn't found already (seen you on ubi and that other site). As someone suggested there, I think a mail to ubi should be at least worh a try. Good luck, and maybe some of our other members come up with something.

Anyway, now that you've found us, maybe you find something that helps you enjoy FC2 even without those Predecessor missions. Basically, those extra missions send you around in FC2 to collect another couple of tapes, nothing to be too sad about if you can't get them to w@&k.

Thanks KingRat, PZ and Art Blade.

In response to KingRat, I did finish the mission and head to Pala, then out again, but nothing changed. I also then started a new game entirely (this is all after the reg fix) but now have gotten to the church for my pills, to the UFLL for a mission, then out of Pala and still nothing.  No envelope icon in the legend nor anything on the map, no phone call, etc.

Well I hope to hear something back from Ubisoft.

Let me know if any other ideas pop up!

Right, isn't that strange?  I hope the Steam version didn't somehow omit the bonus missions from the installation.

Is there anything else I could just be missing about those missions starting?  I did have them working before from the DVD install, and I recall the envelopes, the phone calls, etc.  Is it possible that they won't start until sometime later regardless of the phone calls?  I think I would still get the envelopes.  I will try completing the first entire mission and see what happens.

Thanks for the help.

I just had an idea. If you check the reg key edit again, it reads "ubisoft" -- maybe you find in the registry something that reads "steam" instead? place those partnerkeys there perhaps? :)
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission

Hi - I did alter my key from what was in the original in this thread.  Mine, adjusted for Vista 64 and Steam, reads:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Ubisoft\Far Cry 2]
"PartnerKey1"=dword:00000001
"PartnerKey2"=dword:00000001
"MachetesKey"=dword:00000001

There is no reference to Steam in there because the Key's executable points to correct place:

c:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\far cry 2\bin\FarCry2.exe

But if you see anything in there which looks wrong, please let me know.  As was mentioned, the regedit fix for the machete textures *did* w@&k!   :)

Just not the bonus missions ("Gamestop" or "Intel").   :(
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission
Post by: Art Blade on January 16, 2010, 06:04:57 PM
The difference between machete and missions is the DWORD name, machete=machete, missions=PartnerKey1+2

To me the culprit appears to be the name of the DWORD, partnerkey, because machete works.

Maybe some more research on the net, but so far I tried a couple of things including: reg, HKEY, steam bonus, error, "'t w@&k" (as in won't and don't), but to no avail.

I then thought maybe it is better to contact steam, rather than ubi, because they caused this and I saw a steam service reply helping a customer with another problem caused by steam ("LV issue" as in Low Violence, localised versions of steam products have been altered in a way that they removed gore, ragdoll effects etc).

I really have to hold back not to curse aloud here  ;)

This is tough :)

Hey, now this is getting interesting.  Everything else was in the Local Machine folder, so I assumed there would be nothing in Current User.  Sure enough, I found the Machetes Key and PartnerKey2 already in Current User and set to "1" but no entry for PartnerKey1.

I'll get back to you as soon as I check things out in FC2.   ;)

SpujeN7x
tar3QuzU
THaCupR4
tr99pUK7

partner1
partner2

SpujeN7x came with my DVD version.  I have tried a couple others but can't recall which.  Am I missing any?

I tried FC2 after editing the Registry again.  Nothing changed.  I finished the current mission, went back to Pala, went to Mike's Bar, but no phone call.  I still don't see the Predecessor Tapes in the Menu, don't have an envelope icon in the Map Legend, nor do I have any envelopes on my map.

Thanks for the effort here.  Any other ideas?  That Registry issue seemed like it had potential, and a part of me still thinks there may be something in there.

I'm still waiting to hear back from Steam support about whether the missions were omitted in the installation or how to get the codes to w@&k.  And waiting to hear back from Ubisoft support about the whole issue.

Thanks!

Thank you for supplying us with those codes, maybe they can help other players. I didn't know more than what we had and "partner1."

I hope that both ubi and steam will reply to you, and out of curiosity, I'd like to know what either one of them said. I hope that one of them can sort the problem. Good luck with that, Rangoon :)

In the meantime, ignore the predecessor missions and instead have fun with all those goodies we have here for FC2 players. You know, we like stories. Feel free to tell us some of your adventures, funny moments etc... you'll find a lot of that on our site :)

Ah gosh, one more thing: You're on Vista. Did you try running FC2 as "admin" ? Full rights and so on? Sometimes programs under Vista behave a little funny without. And, after changing the registry, did you reboot? That may help, too.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I do have Steam set to run as admin, and I set the FC2 exe to run as admin.  I didn't try running FC2 directly from the exe (always through Steam), but not sure that would make a difference.  I did reboot per your suggestion, but nothing appears any different.

I didn't change any rights - I can look into that tomorrow.

Steam support has so far not been very helpful.  I think I've had to reply now for a fourth time.  I hope Ubisoft will have some good news for me.  I'll let you know what they have to say.

Incredible, isn't it. Apparently it is not a wide-spread issue, else we would have found something on the net. The question is, what on earth prevents your PC from accepting codes and registry changes that w@&k with any other machine? Can't be Vista64, since PZ uses the same OS. So it is quite probable that it has to do with steam. However, I sincerely hope you can fix it, with support of either ubi or steam. And yes, please keep us posted up.

Strange about the missions problem, but it could be a conflict between having the non-steam version installed, then installing the steam version, there might be all sorts of conflicting things going on. Plus the fact it's on vista doesn't help, I have no information on how the game works on vista. One thing though, the registry keys I provided were only a shortcut, the same thing gets done by using the secret codes, from what I remember, except maybe the Intel ones which was a separate download. I'm pretty sure, though, that everything could be done with those secret codes, it's just a matter of finding ones that w@&k on the system that the game is running on. The Steam version may also throw a monkey wrench in the works.

That's what I was thinking re Steam. It's strange the 'machete' code works but the bonus missions don't. Maybe the Steam version redacted the bonus missions? I'd need to buy the steam version to do any troubleshooting, but I already have an x360 and 2 PC dvd copies.

Does the steam version have a config file where these keys could be added?
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission

I installed the game (Vista64) using a full administrator account (as I do most of my software so permissions won't mess things up), but then play the game using a limited account.  I entered the bonus codes starting the game (using the admin account) - then switched to the limited account to play - the missions were in place, albeit with the bug that was introduced after one of the patches (the one that causes the same kid with a shotgun story to repeat).

Strange issue - I hope that you get it sorted, but it sounds almost like something to do with the Steam installation rather than an OS issue.
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission
Post by: Dweller_Benthos on January 19, 2010, 12:17:11 PM
That might be it - entering those codes causes a key to be written to the registry - does the limited user account in vista block registry access? If so, then it's not writing the key and the game doesn't see the change. So, entering the codes as admin allows the registry change and it works then.

Sounds locigal to me anyway

Hey guys.  Somehow I stopped getting email notifications for replies...so didn't read the past few posts until just now.  Anyhow, here is more detail on the situation, including some quotes from Ubisoft and Steam.

As for my Vista use, the account I use for everything on that computer is an admin account.  I did set Steam and FC2 to run as Admin in addition to being logged in as an administrator at all times.  The only noticeable difference is that it asks for confirmation whenever I launch Steam.

When I first was running my FC2 DVD installation, I used the same account and do recall that at some point the game stopped launching until I set it to run as Admin.  It could be that in the interim I had turned UAC off and then back on again.  I've read that something installed before that happens can act strangely after UAC is turned back on again.  Anyhow, didn't have any issues unlocking the bonus missions with the code which came with the game.  So it was accessing the registry just fine.

One thing about this current Steam installation is that I do now have registry keys for machete and partner1 and partner2 in both the Local Machine directory as well as the Current User directory.  Could that be causing some issue?  Maybe what I should do is uninstall the game again, delete both directories in the registry, delete all other FC2 folders (save games, etc.) and reinstall the game from scratch.  Which directory should the keys be in - Current User?  And in Vista, should there be anything in the Local Machine directory or does this perhaps imply a problem with the installation.  When Steam installed the game, it created keys for executable, etc., in the Local Machine directory.

Here is something from the Steam Store page:

QuoteFar Cry 2: Fortune's Edition contains the full Far Cry 2 game, including all previously released patches and the Far Cry 2 Fortunes DLC with additional content listed below.

This to me implies that it is the complete FC2 game plus Fortunes Pack, meaning that nothing was removed from the game.  My understanding is that both the Gamestop and Intel missions simply needed to be unlocked, not installed.  The Intel mission download was something like 6MB, which is larger than I would have expected for a simple key, but someone on another forum said it still is just adding a key to the registry.  I assumed partner1 is Gamestop and partner2 is Intel, or vice versa.

Here is so far the only thing Ubisoft support has said to me:

QuoteThe Fortunes Pack is not the same game as the original Far Cry game, and is unfortunately not usable with the original bonus codes.

This tells me that it's possible the content was omitted from the installation.  Seems unlikely to me.  So why was there a Fortunes Pack DLC before, but is no longer available as a stand-alone product?  I'm sure it justifies them charging $20 instead of $5, but since this other content is no longer included, you are trading actual gameplay (missions with some story and characters) for weapons and vehicles which, quite frankly, has no real effect on the game.  Why they would remove content is beyond me.

And it brings up a question.  Is anyone here using the digital download complete edition of FC2+FP (not the Steam version specifically)?  And if so, any bonus missions working? If so, this would imply that what Ubisoft just said to me is untrue.

Here are some snippets from Steam support:

QuoteI apologize for any confusion that may have been caused by the Store page for this game. The Far Cry 2: Fortunes Edition from Steam does not have any content from the original game that has been excluded. Your previous purchase of the game through Gamestop contained extra content that is exclusive to games pre-ordered through Gamestop.

The bonus missions are exclusive to pre-orders of the game through Gamestop and will not w@&k with the Steam copy of the game. Stand alone purchases of the Fortune's Pack DLC are not offered through Steam.

That tells me that the installation should contain the missions ("...does not have any content from the original game that has been excluded").  The rest of Steam Support's replies have been irrelevant.

I'm not sure what is the best way for me to go here, but I'm seriously considering ending my patronage of Steam and encouraging my friends to do the same.  I was very skeptical at first about Steam, but after giving it a shot for a couple of years and having no major issues, I figured it was alright.  Looks like I could be wrong.  At the same time, I'm trying not to overreact.  ;)

I really appreciate the help on this forum.  I get the feeling you're trying to solve my problem like it was your problem.  Thanks.

Hello again, Rangoon :)

Indeed, help here has always been that way. Whenever anyone needed anything, usually a couple of our members came up with suggestions and solutions almost immediately after the original request was posted.

I can fully understand your resentment to steam. I have so far managed to live without steam, and my "problem" with steam is the loss of ownership of a product (you no longer posess physical products such as CDs that can be installed on any PC at any time), and starting with HalfLife2, when you still got the CD, that it was useless without internet connection -- what good is a product legally purchased in a shop that still doesn't w@&k, unless someone (steam) allows you to use it via online registration. And, for those people who have limited internet access, like modem, satellite uplink etc, and/or limited data traffic that leads to extra costs per MB downloaded, it means to pay for the "product" (download) and addtionally to pay for the traffic. And if the connection is slow, it uses up both the internet access and the PC for the time the download takes place, rendering both useless for different jobs. On top, if the download for some reason breaks down, you have all the costs and can start over, causing new costs. If you purchased the right version but for some reason download the wrong one (happened to a member here) you also have to repeat the whole process. Finally, online only means many people in the shipping and packing industry lose their jobs. Those are my points.

Now to your problem. When FC2 was first released, the bonus missions could be unlocked, and then DLC was released, which could be packed on top. Like that, the bonus missions were still there, along with the new DLC. That is as far as I know what happened. Now, if you get FC2 and immediately install that DLC (or, as the steam version apparently does, have everything installed in one go) that might block the code. If that is the case, then everyone who purchases the double pack cannot play the bonus missions.

Those of you who have DLC, can you confirm that you had first the bonus missions and then installed that DLC?

I purchased the DLC after I had entered bonus codes on both the PC and PS3 versions of the game - everything is working properly.

Like Rangoon, I'm often skeptical when a "new version" comes out that is a simple re-package of the original, and the first thing that comes to mind is that the publishers have found a new way to charge extra.   ;D

Well this is interesting.  Ubisoft just wrote back to me and said:

QuoteI think you may have misunderstood what I said. The bonus codes are not usable, but the unlockable content is already included in the rerelease of the game from Steam. You aren't missing anything in the game, and I apologize for the confusion.

But first he said:

QuoteThe Fortunes Pack is not the same game as the original Far Cry game, and is unfortunately not usable with the original bonus codes.

Sounds confusing to me (why use the term "unfortunately"?).

By the sounds of this, I just need to keep playing and eventually I will get a Predecessor mission.  I guess I'll just keep playing and find out.  If what he says is true, well that's indeed great news.  By all other accounts, however, I should have already gotten a Predecessor mission by now.  We'll see....  I'll report back hopefully within a day if I can find some time to play.

I think I'll do a clean install first, too.

Alright :)

My latest playthrough I wasn't thinking about the registry entry, and after the tutorial I took on my first mission at Mike's bar. Then I drove to Pala. My mobile rang once I had entered the town area and the distorted voice on the mobie told me I wasn't the first one who was after the Jackal. The predecessor missions were activated. That's how you know, and on the map, above the SE bus stop, a new icon with a white envelope and an exclamation mark showed up. The first mission.
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission
Post by: Rangoon on January 21, 2010, 12:00:48 AM
After uninstalling and cleaning everything up, I installed the Steam version again.  I did notice this time something which I don't think happened before.  I went to the additional content option in the main menu and put in my actual Game Key (not any of the bonus mission keys).  It said something about successfully unlocking missions.  I checked the registry and the only thing I noticed is that it did in fact add the Machetes key.  Upon checking the Game options I noticed I could select the other machete textures (no surprise).

However, there are no keys for partner1 or partner2.  Well I figure this is fine if the "bonus" missions are in fact now part of the game proper.  However, I've since started a new game, played the tutorial, finished the first UFLL mission including the Buddy mission which goes along with it, gone back to Pala and gotten a second UFLL mission, but still no phone call nor any Envelope updates to the map.

Is it possible that it could take longer than this before it the Predecessor missions will start?

It's my impression from what Ubisoft said that I don't need any registry edits or codes to activate what *used* to be bonus missions.

Well that's the latest.

EDIT:  I just reinstalled again and indeed when I enter the Game Key into the Promotional Content field, it says: "You have successfully unlocked the missions."

This does give me hope, but why have I not seen the missions yet?  PZ, you indicated earlier that it happens at different times during the playthrough.  Is that for the phone call or for any evidence of the Predecessor missions to appear (such as the envelope on the map or the Predecessor Tapes listed in the menu)?
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission
Post by: Art Blade on January 21, 2010, 11:02:04 AM
The first time I activated those missions (reg edit) I did that in the middle of the game. Thereafter, my first visit to Pala made my cell phone ring and I got the missions. So I believe it doesn't matter when you activate the missions, but if you do, you should get the call immediately after visiting Pala.
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission
Post by: PZ on January 21, 2010, 11:50:18 AM
I too first entered the codes half way through the game, and never did receive a phone call while in Leboa.  Interestingly, I received a phone call while on the way to Mosate Selao which stunned me since I had already done Predecessor missions throughout Leboa.

On subsequent plays through, I did receive phone calls, but they were never predictable.  As to when they appeared - almost immediately after entering the codes, the white envelope appeared at the post in southeast Leboa (If I recall correctly, within a few minutes).

It sounds like the Ubi guy either doesn't know the game well (his double talk), or he is deliberately side-stepping.

I'm getting the distinct impression that nobody at Steam or Ubisoft has ever played this game.

I will try using the registry keys again and see where that gets me.

I even told Ubisoft that I would gladly pay the $4.95 that is listed on their digital download site for the Fortunes Pack at this point.  Just to be done with this.  But of course, even though it's listed there on the first page, it's not available.

Reminds me of my frustration with FC2 + online:

Because I wanted to play the game so badly and because it wasn't steam but Ubi I had to register with, I decided to do so (through gritted teeth). I hate games that need online activation despite of having bought the retail version on CD.

Rangoon, I found info here (totally different game board though) that might help you understand the mission issue with steam:

Quote from: JRD on January 22, 2010, 09:51:59 AM
I didn't enter the BLEEDINGBADLY or any other code on my laptop and it has FTE and Skirmish maps available as SP missions.
Since both my laptop and my gaming PC are running the STEAM version of OFP2, I assume that it has been downloaded and installed like that from STEAM.

If you are correct, than Rangoon should've the additional content from the beginning, which I believe he doesn't... woth a try though!

Yes, basically that is what I gather from the quotes of Ubi/steam. Strange though why it doesn't seem to w@&k. Maybe indeed later on, or...

After the first playthrough, as a bonus :) (fingers crossed)

I believe I can contribute to this discussion with my own experiences.

I bought Far Cry 2 and the DLC on Steam before the DLC was automatically integrated for free. About half-way into my first playthrough, I used the registry codes cited in the first page, and they unlocked the predecessor missions (I had already activated the DLC).

However, today I returned to Far Cry 2 for the first time since the DLC became free and integrated, and have discovered that, when loading up any of my saves, the predecessor missions and tapes have mysteriously disappeared. 'Predecessor Tapes' no longer shows up in the main menu.

I confirmed the registry keys are still there, but they seem to have lost their effectiveness.

One thing, though - I can still select from the additional 2 Machete types, so it appears they haven't taken that out.

One last thing - check out this topic; could it have to do with the issue we're facing?

Hello wexer9 and welcome to OWG (your first post)  :-X :)

Interesting info you gave there, missions disappearing...  :(

Thanks for the link mate :)

The author of the 2nd reply to the post in the link you sent, was Rangoon himself :) So yes, he's already on it  ;D

But for those who are not him, the link might actually help  :-X

Lol, I'll post if I think of anything interesting... :P

I actually only signed up a few months ago to download your game saves where you had all weapons + upgrades...just felt like testing that out. 8)

I was also reading around and am disappointed to find no progress has been made on the troublesome "Jackal Tape" glitch. :(

I'd like to play Far Cry 2 again, but I really would like to have the Precessor missions available...that's just the hardcore completionist in me speaking. :o

Ah, so you were the one who downloaded that savegame! ;D Hope you had some fun with it. There are a couple of downloads available now, maybe there is something more for you :)

I know what you mean by "completionist" hehe, and it is sad, really, that they haven't fixed it yet. Not you being a completionist but the jackal tape and predecessor mission glitch, that is  ;D

Maybe someone out there can enlighten us and solve the issue.

This site is based on FC2. Many of us love it, but not everyone is actively playing it all the time because there are other good games out there, too.

Personally, I keep discovering things in FC2... I still love it and always return to it after episodes of different games :)

There is always hope. Maybe there is a solution, too :)

Hi wexer9, it's always good to see new people posting.

Sorry for the belated greeting but I tend to avoid technical topics as that's not really my strong suit.  ;)

I don't fix them, I just drives them and look for ways to get around bugs if they pop up.

By the way, I was reading past a few posts and can confirm that I placed the registry codes in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder, like the original post suggests. That used to w@&k, before the "Fortunes Edition".

That's bad news wexer9; leads one to believe that the code in the Fortunes Edition was changed to preclude the use of the predecessor missions, although I can't imagine why.  I hope that I'm wrong.

Maybe we should contact (see: spam :P) Steam and Ubisoft support en masse about this issue. I know from reading this thread that this has been attempted, but now that we have new information (ie. the predecessor missions actually being removed from previous saved games), we could try again.

Also, I am going to try to delete/re-download Far Cry 2 sometime soon. I will keep my old saves and also start a new game, and see if that changes anything.

Yes, maybe there is a way to attract attention again, and I believe that the devs would not want their game to stay that way (crippled). I believe the devs would want to help. The question is, are the producers willing to spend money on developing a patch with that one (or two) issues? If the developers wanted and did (unpaid) create a patch, would the producers allow them to distribute it? I believe it is a question of money.

The game is only about 1 and 3 months old. And while it seems the average "patch development cycle" is around 1 year, some games have been officially supported for much longer. For example, Neverwinter Nights' last patch was released just last year, and that game came out in 2002!

Far Cry 2 sold almost 3 millions units by third quarter of last year (according to http://www.vg247.com/2009/01/22/far-cry-2-pop-and-shaun-white-all-break-2-million-sales/ (http://www.vg247.com/2009/01/22/far-cry-2-pop-and-shaun-white-all-break-2-million-sales/)), so it's certainly a money maker. I personally think they could do to support it a little longer. Who knows, another patch might be in development, but if it is, it certainly hasn't been officially announced.

I think if we can show that there is a sufficient following for this game, then we can show that the game is still worth supporting. Or at least we might get some answers on how to solve some of the problems we have been facing.

If we could find the e-mail addresses of some of the developers of the game, I'm sure we could find a sympathetic ear, and maybe get an update on the patch situation.

Hope springs eternal. :)

Just tried starting a new game without re-installing. Still no Predecessor Tapes in the pause menu. One thing I noticed, though - I can now click the 'Quit' button on the pause menu!

The last time I played (before Steam updated the game to give the Fortunes Pack out for free) and actually since I started playing the game (at least all the time I can remember), I have had to hover my mouse over 'Quit to Menu' then pressed the down button and enter to exit.

Bizarre and probably unrelated, but I seem to remember reading about this earlier in the thread. :o You never know, it could be related...

It just couldn't click on it; it wasn't grayed out, it was black.

Anyway, not a big deal, but thanks for the tip.

As I said, I read this somewhere earlier in the thread (or a thread somewhere else on the same topic), so it could be relevant.

Edit: Now that I think of it, it's probably because not having the Predecessor Tapes menu item frees up a slot on the menu...

I've been continuing my support tickets with both Ubisoft and Steam.  They keep trying to tell me everything is fine, that my problem is solved, and that my ticket is closed, but it's obviously not.  So I keep having to reopen the tickets.  It really would be great if there were others contacting them directly.

If we can get something 'official' from OWG administrators, it can only help the matter.  I am once again reinstalling the Steam version after cleaning everything out just so I can test again withOUT any registry edits.  I'll just input the Key to Promotional Content (where I get the "You have successfully unlocked the missions" response) and play.  As I've pointed out, after doing so there IS a new registry key for the Machete textures, but nothing more.  So the machetes are included and the message indicates the missions are, but I have yet to see any indication they're actually there.  This time around I will just keep playing without implementing any fixes out of frustration.  We'll see what happens (but again, I've already done this and played several missions into the story without anything).

Thanks for keeping on this.  There isn't much activity on the official Ubisoft or Steam forums for this game (or at least this problem).

We are on it, really, and we hope the good people of Ubi will help us. But these things need time (red tape and such).

Thank you guys for keeping a nice tone in your posts, despite of the sorrow the issue causes you.

The game is great, but out there on the net all I see is whining, flaming, everything but reasonable. Here, at OWG, we handle things differently, and maybe that is a bonus. We are officially asking for help, represented by our Site Admin PZ, who is trying to establish contact.

Please bear with us and keep up your remarkable attitude, respect, and friendliness. That is a basic element of a reasonable talk. Something I generally miss out there on the net. Imagine what Ubi has to deal with for more than a year. Official forums full of complaints (many of them silly, in my opinion) and I bet a good deal of that stuff gets sent to them via email, too. I'd be fed up with that and maybe I'd lost interest in yet another fan complaining. Then again, they have a fan base. We pay for their games and they make games for us (or vice versa), so there should be a mutual interest of keeping both ends together. I regard them as partners, and we treat partners with respect.

Again, don't give up hope, and we will keep you informed :)

wexer9, you might want to contact support directly, too, since you have a different twist on the problem than I do. You had the Steam version, had it working, then got the auto-update and suddenly things stopped working.  If that doesn't imply something is broken, I don't know what does.

indeed, but I'm a little careful with the statement because he didn't explicitely state he actually was using the same configuration or meeting the criteria posted by you. He did say it worked, nothing more. I'd be less careful if he stated that he did use a steam version etc :)

Yes, I'm quite skeptical at this point as well.  But he did reply in another thread (same forum) where I was explicit about the Steam/FP bit, and I think that is his installation.  I'll confirm it.

I don't know but I suspect that my initial contact went further up the chain because I explained that our organization is interested in their response.  Consequently, the ticket was in a waiting mode for a few days while other requests in which I did not mention OWG were answered quickly.  In the end, it is probably impossible to assess whether or not they are simply giving lip service.

Sorry to play the devil's advocate here, but I've got a feeling that no matter how much we badger them, Ubi won't take any action to fix this prob. Since it's arguably a minor bug in that it isn't dangerous, doesn't crash or adversely affect the game, and since there does appear to be a FC3 in development, I can't see the devs spending their precious time addressing this. They're no doubt presently on one deadline or another for other projects.

I'd actually be very surprised if they went to the trouble of producing another FC2 patch at this remove.

I'm not saying give up, keep trying by all means if you like, but frankly, I wouldn't get any great hopes up.
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission
Post by: RedRaven on February 05, 2010, 04:49:13 PM
Hate to say it but fragger is probably right. Reckon chances are they are just going to w@&k on FC3. After all they will get more money from people for a new game than they will from any further patch or DLC for FC2.

I have the same feeling. It's been a while since the last patch, they prolonged the game with DLC and closed the case.

In another thread a few OWG members have conversed about a list of games that Ubi is working on, and FC3 was not one of them - unless I'm missing something then FC2 is probably the last of a good thing.
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission

It's really hard to say, PZ, I can't seem to find anything to confirm or deny that this is the case. You may well be right, though.

However, I got this from Wiki. It was posted very recently, on 3 Feb 2010.

Far Cry 3 is the upcoming sequel to the 2008 video game Far Cry 2.

The unnamed sequel is in preliminary stages of development. Far Cry 3 may continue to take place in the African setting. However, Kevin Shortt, a Ubisoft scriptwriter, mentioned that the Antarctic setting is a possibility.

I have no idea of how reliable this is, probably not very as I've heard all that before. It might even be just somebody's wishful thinking.

If you Google Far Cry 3 there are a couple of listed reports of it still being in development, but all these reports seem to be dated no later than around November 2009.

Time will tell, I guess. I'm not going to hold out hope. If it happens it'll be a bonus, if it doesn't, then I won't be disappointed.

In any event, there are lots of great games in the tube, and I'm sure there'll be many more to come. This particular industry isn't about to fold any time soon.
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission
Post by: PZ on February 12, 2010, 08:47:08 AM
Well, if we do see Ubi announce plans or a release date, that will be a day to celebrate although I'm not too sure I'd like the Antarctic environment.  The vivid colors and simple beauty of the African landscape in FC2 will be hard to beat.  ;)

It would be cool if they had a more world-wide area for the next game. Say, you're a merc or assassin based in a town or city, you can do "local" jobs to get money & reputation, then you get bigger jobs, maybe get notcied by international agencies (CIA, MI6, KGB etc) and get a "James Bond" job that takes you around the world. They hire you, of course, instead of using their own operatives for the ever popular "plausible deniability".

Imagine a game with 3 or 4 "worlds" like the one in FC2 that you can go back and forth between doing jobs and whatever. I guess that sounds more like GTA or WoW though. Definitely less RPG and more shooter for me though.
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission
Post by: PZ on February 12, 2010, 11:32:33 AM
That indeed would be ultra-cool.  I like the different "worlds" that you experience in Uncharted2, and having a home base where you can come safely to is also a plus - like the Villa in Assassin's Creed 2  :-X

Title: Re: Predecessor Mission
Post by: Rangoon on February 13, 2010, 12:12:11 AM
Regarding predecessor missions, I'm still not getting anything in my game.  I had read someone else getting the phone call after 12% game progress.  I'm at 16%.  I got a little excited when I saw the GPS flash green at me when I revisited the area in the southeast because that is where I remember finding the first envelope.  Turns out it was just a Jackal tape which I had already picked up.  So rather than it being a good thing, it was just the first time I've experienced the Jackal Tape loop bug.

I find there is very little value in the Fortunes Pack - I can't see any reason to use it.  I'm not using any of the weapons.   The vehicles don't really matter one way or another.  So I guess I'm not sure what to do.  I guess just uninstall the Steam version and reinstall the DVD version.

I'm pissed at Steam, pissed at Ubisoft, but I love this game.  I suppose I'll just tell Steam support every time I buy a game NOT FROM THEM.  And remind them why.

Oh well.  It's their right to lose my business.
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission
Post by: Art Blade on February 13, 2010, 02:59:25 AM
That isn't really good news  :( Not only no solution to the initial problem, no, now on top you get rewarded with the Boot Loop glitch  :D

People who know me and my attitude towards steam will probably grin when reading your comments about that matter... (I'm with you, though for different reasons, read post #47 (http://openworldgames.org/owg/forums/index.php?topic=118.msg20943#msg20943) in this topic).

The good thing, and that indeed is comforting, is that you do have a DVD version. Go to your windows security manager, firewall, and block FC2 updater/launcher/game exe from accessing the internet so you don't download anything you don't want (You might want to try to play the game without the last patch so you can avoid the boot loop trap). :)

Well that's funny, because Ubisoft support has finally acknowledged to me that there is an issue and that it's being looked into.  I quote (from Ubisoft support ticket):

QuoteAs indicated previously, this is a known issue that the developers are currently investigating. As soon as any additional information becomes available, it will be placed in the game's forums and in our FAQ.

and

QuoteThank you for reporting this issue. I have sent this along through the appropriate channels for processing. If this issue is resolved, the solution will appear on the support section of our website.

This is promising, but also could just be run-around. I've found at least one user on the Steam forums who has the complete FC2+FP Steam edition, and IS getting the Predecessor Missions.  This is also promising, but why am I not getting them?  Could it be related to the fact that I had the DVD version installed before?  I tried to clean out my system of the old install, but maybe I didn't.  Perhaps something is lingering which irritates the Steam version so much that it won't let me play the Predecessor Missions.  Maybe it's jealous of the DVD ex-girlfriend. I mean ex-installation.

Reminds me of a movie where someone gets a guided tour through a call centre. You see female and male employees, and notice how every female has the same first name, like "this is Mary" and every male also has the same first name, like "my name is Jack." Which isn't far from reality, I know of a case in real life when someone I knew told me the company he worked for had asked him to use a different name (say, "Mike Newman") so it didn't sound foreign to their customers. While using his real name (making it up, "Tandja al-Mabhouh") he had been harassed by customers for nothing less than the sound of his name.

That reminds me of a funny story - when I lived in San Diego, I regularly attended the yearly county fair.  At it, one of my favorite visits was to the barker booths where someone did their best to sell you something.  I recall one booth, where a guy was trying to sell knives - he said "my brother Harry is in the back packing the specials just as I speak".  The funny part is that each time I visited the booth, a different guy would utter the same phrase - must have been driven the patents nuts when the brothers were young.  Imagine calling out "Hey Harry!" and three voices chiming up "Yeah?"

There was another barker who must have laughed all the way to the bank.  At the exit of the fair, he was selling balloons, and had a great special "25 cents, 3 for a dollar, bargain, bargain, bargain!" he would sing out.  Naturally I got a great laugh (as he must have) out of the parents having several children in tow taking him up on the 3 for a dollar deal.

The only problem is that Ubi only hires representatives named "Jason", and that they have cut-and-paste answers that they post into their replies.  I can just see their human resources department - everything goes into the circular file (trash can) except applications from a Jason.  Here's another thought - like we have seen in some of the old scifi movies, "Jason" is nothing more than a computer that spits out "pat" answers like a pair of dice deliver a number combination  ;D

I insisted a number of times with Steam support that my concern be answered by a supervisor, but had no luck.  Then it all basically got put onto Ubi.  If Ubisoft can't get this sorted out soon, I need to go back to Steam since they took my money.  Then I'll have to get a little more insistent about the supervisor because it's the same runaround at Steam, too.

Title: Re: Predecessor Mission
Post by: mandru on March 03, 2010, 10:39:39 PM
I worked for several years in a phone center as a shipping and returns problem resolution specialist.  Part of what I was paid to do was keep the customer from bothering my supervisors and managers in the phone center.

The magic words that took things out of my hands (as a front level employee) and allowed callers to be bumped up the ladder were, "I need this escalated to a supervisor or if that fails to a manager so that a resolution can be reached for this problem."  Once you've reached a higher up and explaned the problem a good word track for you to use may be "What steps are you going to take to make this right?"

Beyond that... (Sigh)

Personally I'm afraid that Steam and UBI have done everything they are going to do.  They have moved on to other projects and FC2 is old news and they only lose money even looking backwards.

I know that for me, part of what moved me away from the UBI forums for FC2, was the amount of open indifference to player's shouts for help from UBI that were for the most part ignored or were directed over to the product problem forum of the site even after the person posting had clearly said that they had not received attention for their problem at the page where they were being directed back to.

Still, best of luck getting a solution for this.
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission

I have a professional background too, regarding dealing with complaints over the phone. If I couldn't solve a problem myself, I suggested that I'd forward an order to the department responsible, offered my name again so the customer had me as reference, I told him that I'd leave a trail easily to be picked up in case he didn't get a reply soon enough and that he should refer to our conversation. If a case was so subtle and difficult that I knew no regular employee would even get a grasp of what was going on, I picked someone in a position to make decisions, told him the problem (usually those guys agreed with me), and put the customer through or gave name and extention to the customer in case that particular person was not available at the moment.

You see, there is a difference between taking a call and taking a customer serious. A problem like what you are presented with at UBI and STEAM is indeed worth a different treatment than what has been shown. From a professional point of view, I can only share what mandru said. I don't think that anything is going to happen.

I wish that once in my life I would encounter a representative like you two - most of the time I really dislike having to get on the phone because I know that I'll come away annoyed.  ;)

Heh, PZ... without going into detail, but a service level what you would like to experience as a customer is a very expensive and complex business. Not all companies invest their money into that part of their enterprise.
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission
Post by: PZ on March 04, 2010, 02:14:19 PM
Yes, and time is money for the company, that I can understand.  What they fail to understand is that my time is also money - what I resent is having to threaten to cancel an account just to correct an error that was the fault of the company to begin with (my most recent fight with a service representative).  Because of something that happened on their end, a credit card company had issued me a new card saying only that my account had been compromised at an undisclosed location. OK, whatever... Then when it came time to pay the bill, I did so, but they applied the payment to the original account, not the new one, so they sent me a letter saying that I owed a $39 late fee plus interest, and my account interest rate was being automatically increased to 29.9% - all because of a mistake they made.

Naturally I immediately called and the representative told me that she could not do anything about it, but that I'd better pay the bill so that I didn't accrue additional charges - I explained that they already had the payment, and had my bank's confirmation number to prove it, but evidently she was too stupid to understand or didn't understand english.  Finally, exceedingly annoyed,  I asked to speak to a supervisor and before she transferred me, she (the original representative) had the unmitigated gall to ask me if she had solved the problem to my satisfaction!  This particular company evidently does not let the first line representative do any kind of thinking on their own, beyond the script that they are told to recite.  ;D

Hahahaha!  ;D

I can't even begin to imagine to w@&k in an office like that, especially with people like that. When I think of my business experience, maybe this info is interesting for you to have: The company I'm thinking of spent around 15 years on developing their customer care and customer service, and have extended that service to their salesmen. Each employee is attended by a personal coach to improve their skill level. Over the years many freelance coaches have added to the broad spectrum of qualifications and skills. The amount of employees working in that sector of the enterprise has risen exponentially. Freelance QA agencies constantly and randomly probe all first line agents with the goal of learning from mistakes, improve, and get to 100% of all criteria for absolute excellency.

I can only smile sadly at UBI and STEAM.

Was reading this thread to understand more about the bonus missions but also interested in the Steam related talk. Will get onto that in a separate post...

Right now, just a question or two regarding the bonus missions:

Background:

I had a DVD (non-fortune pack) of FC2 that I got as a promotion with some hardware. I loaded it up, and it auto-installed the 1.03 updates. After hunting around on the net, I found out about the Fortunes Edition. Didn't have that, and no searate pack available. More hunting and I found a download of the Fortune Pack extras. Executed, and it added the extra vehicles and arms. Then after reading forums like this I found out about the Extra Bonus Missions unlocking. Did the code entries, of which only 3-4 worked to give the "...successfully... unlocked..." message. Then I read about the registy hack way, checked my reg and found only Partner Key 1 and the Machete entries. So I updated it to have PartnerKey 2 also.

Since playing, I find Cell Tower missions available, where you assasinate a random suit who never runs away but waits for you to kill him... (LOL) Seems unrelated to the story though.

Then there is the Predecessor Envelope ones where essentially you go around collecting tapes like you do for the Jackal Tapes. I got 3 in the North so need to find the ones in the South now.

Questions:

1. Is that it? Is nothing else supposed to happen? You just collect and kill until you have done them all?

2. I read that Intel did a download for the content of about 6Mb. On FarCry2Game.com it says more is supposed to happen:

Mission 1: the Morrocan

This mission sends you into the most heavily guarded region of the Leboa-Sako territory. Hiding out at the old Legion fort is a Moroccan who might be able to help you locate the Jackal. Your objective is to locate him and find out what he knows.

Mission 2: the American

Your predecessor has tracked down the American informant to the Dogon village in the rocky northern ranges. Your objective: follow his trail and find out what the informant told him.

Only times I went to the Fort in the North was to kill the King, and to get a tape. There was no mention of seeking a guy who will tell me something. Haven't got to the Dogon Village one yet.. Will any of this happen in the registry hack version, or does the 6Mb download actually add characters or animation sequences etc to complete the missions?

I have no DLC but used the registry hack.

1: yes
2: I read various times that it is just the same as the reg hack, so no idea why 6 mbs were needed. Never heard of additional cut scenes.

When I did those Predecessor missions, I only found bodies and tapes next to them.

Cool, least I won't get paranoid wondering if my system is playing up!  :-X I have downloaded the 6Mb thing but I won't bother running it. For some reason the downloaded file on the HDD is less than 2Mb! LOL.

Steam

I remember my first experience with Steam a couple of years ago. I bought a copy of GTR: Evolution in a shop and when I tried to install it, it gave two options: Single Player (no need for Steam activation) and the Multiplayer with Steam install. I had never heard of Steam so avoided it. For some reason, the standalone didn't install or activate right so I did the Steam version that also istalled that application.  You had to make an account to activate,  which I didn't like, but did anyway... Must have played a few times and then moved on.

Roll forward a few years, and I forgot about Steam. Got a copy of DiRT2 with graphics card, and you needed Steam to download and activate. Didn't like the idea, but did it anyway. Had to make an account, but had forgotten I had an old one. Then when trying to re-install GTR:E that I had to activate. I figured I'd add it to my new account with DiRT2. That's when I hit an issue...

Steam said the game had already been activated on a different account and I couldn't do it. Realising I about my previous history with Steam, I tried to remember my old account info and eventually figured it out. Logged in and yep, there GTR:E was, still registered.

1. I didn't want two accounts so I investigated having them merged or one deleted and the game transfered... But from my efforts I found out Steam under no circumstances allows that! So logically, I realised that I couldn't really ever sell on a Steam activated game to anyone else! Further reading showed it's also against the rules to pass your Steam account on to another user etc... etc...

2. I had been planning to buy many games through it, but decided this lack of flexibility was a bad sign and uninstalled Steam... Which of course wiped DiRT2, as I also found out games installed under Steam are installed within it's own folder structure! I'm sure that's convenient for many, but I like to have that custom option of choosing the install location myself. (I'm weird about organising my HDD.)

Both these reasons were good enough to prefer buying my games from normal retailers, so I then played around and managed to backup DiRT2 install folder from under the SteamApps\Common (as I remember) directory and stick it under my own Codemasters one in my game installs folder.... And it works, but it's just not "installed" in the Windows registry or listed in the Control Panel>Programs & Features applet.

However, it probably works because it was activated under Steam. Issue is if I bought anymore Valve software, I'd have to do the same. Hopefully not for other games I buy retail.

I have gone on a bit, but I really think this activation stuff and these new online distribution things are making life more complicated for users, not to mention creating more avenues for bugs.

It would have been better if Steam did it like Stardock's Impulse and let you install the app whereever the hell you like, and then remove Impulse if you don't like it, or keep it for auto updates or new purchases.

Now I think Microsoft is joining in the fun too, which means MS games available through Steam need you to activate on both or you get no game saves! LOL

I like to keep my PC software to a minimum and prefer to organise things my own way, so I will keep trying to avoid this new trend and keep buying retail as I also like to have my own physical copy for cherished games.

What we really need is a copy of the Steam version of Far Cry 2 prior to the "Free DLC" update which broke the bonus content and a copy of Far Cry 2 after the "Free DLC" update, so we can compare the differences in files. It might also be useful to have two different copies, one which had previously purchased the DLC before it was given for free and one which hadn't. If we had this, we could probably figure out the root of the problem. Is anyone on this forum a hacker who could look at the differences between retail and Steam copies perhaps, or somehow figure out how to hack the bonus missions back into the Steam version of the game?
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission

I'm not good enough to do that, but I know the predecessor missions worked fine before I did a few FC2 updates on the PS3.  I might delete everything related to the game, reinstall, and see if they start working again.

Well, that's the known history of the Predecessor missions on the PC, at least the Steam version. You said the updates broke the extra missions on the PS3, as well? :o

Perhaps this problem is bigger than we thought...
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission

Yep - my PS3 version is non-functional past the "boots" tape as well - formerly it worked fine.

The boots bug seems to be present for all versions. But it's interesting that the predecessor missions also seem to be broken on multiple platforms...

Like most, I've no idea what exactly the problem is, but it seems to coincide with an update rather than with the DLC, but my memory might not serve me well.  ;D

In any case, it might be some time before I return to Africa - JC2 has been keeping me really busy lately, and Red Dead Redemption is right around the corner.  :-X

Hmm, well, on the PC I can confirm that it was the free DLC update not the latest patch (1.03) that broke the bonus missions on Steam. The free DLC update (Fortune's Edition) came later, chronologically, after the 1.03 patch.

Yes, the boots tape glitch is completely independent. It was introduced by the 1.03 patch.

As far as I know, the boots glitch affects all platforms.

So, the "boots" culprit is positively identified - the 1.03 patch >:(

I should look up the details on that patch as I'd like to know just what issues it was made to address. My game got updated one day when I fired it up whilst online and I never really bothered looking into what the patch did. I just assumed it would make the game better - more fool me - but as far as I can tell it didn't seem to fix much. Instead, it stuffed up at least one thing that was working fine beforehand ("boots"), and didn't fix some things that it really should have, such as the sniper-in-the-rock, levitating mercs, merging vehicles, etc.

Btw, good on you, wexer9, for your perseverance on this issue, it's appreciated :) :-X

Thank you. I would like to know, how do retail versions of Far Cry 2 (PC) get the Fortune's Pack DLC? I know that it was available for $4.99 on the Ubisoft download store for a while, but when the DLC was released for free on Steam, I looked again and discovered that it was "unavailable" in the store. I couldn't find any downloads for it on the Internet (legal ones, I mean), so I am wondering, how do the retail versions of Far Cry 2 get the DLC?

I would also like confirmation the Predecessor Missions still w@&k on the retail version of Far Cry 2, with DLC.

Thanks!  :)

wexer9, at one stage the Fortune Pack was retailing in stores here in Australia, but I don't know if this was true for other countries. I saw it not long after I purchased FC2 in the same store. I didn't consider buying the DLC until about 6 months later, but by then, according to the sales guy, it was no longer available for retail, but I found one on ebay Oz. So I never downloaded the DLC, I had a retail version of it mailed out to me. I have to say that I doubt you can still find retail versions of the Fortune Pack for sale online like that, but you never know.

As for the predecessor missions, they w@&k fine on my retail FC2 with DLC. I used the registry edit file fc2.reg (http://openworldgames.org/owg/forums/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=6) from here at OWG to get the predecessor missions and the custom machetes.

Hi guys, first of all, I'd like to commiserate with everyone who's facing problems with the DLC's and the 'boots' tape. I was fortunate enough in that I decided to buy FC2 waaaayyyy after it came out. I *did* buy it when it first came out but that was a gift for a friend. She loved FC1 but was a bit disappointed with FC2.

After I tried her copy, I decided to go ahead and buy FC2 off Steam. It came together with the Fortune's Pack DLC.

Anyway, I just wanted to share a few things:

1) I've also got the 'boots' tape glitch. It's maddening having to listen to the same recording over and over again. Makes me want to hunt that silly little kid and get HIS bloody boots off him!

2) With regards to the Steam version, it seems that every time I start a new game, I have to enter my Promo code in order to get the machete and the Predecessor Missions.

3) For some reason, Fortune's Pack already comes with all 6 Predecessor Missions, including the Moroccan and the American. At least, that's what I believe. Unless one has to download the extra missions but I don't think so.

4) The Predecessor Missions begin once you enter Pala after completing the intro and left the town at least once. That's what happened to me.

5) The 'envelope' icon for subsequent Predecessor Missions only appears once you've completed a plot or side mission. E.g. I retrieved the first envelope and hunted down the tape. There was no new 'envelope' icon on my map. It was only after I finished another mission did the 'envelope' icon reappear...

I share everyone's frustration at the lack of response from Ubisoft. I still believe there's loads of improvements to be made in this excellent game and it's rather sad (excuse the understatement) that we've been left hanging like this. Sigh.

Edit: Corrected my typo. Got a bit excited at the thought of grabbing a new pair of boots.   ;)

Anyway, I got the game downloaded again, installed the Intel Bonus Missions to see where to put the registry key, and added PartnerKey1 and MachetesKey to that registry folder. Again, like last time, I can access the new machetes but not the Predecessor Missions. I started a new game, and the 'Predecessor Tapes' option is still gone from my menu, even on my old saved games where I had gotten all of the tapes.

As I said, same as before. I am not sure why mir24 seems to be having a different experience from other Steam users. I would be very interested in asking him a few questions if he decides to post in this topic again.

Maybe it is the Intel bonus mission install.  I never did that (just used the bonus mission codes found online).  I heard somewhere about issues with the Intel install, but don't recall the specifics.

All it does is add a registry code, exactly like adding it manually. Anyway, I added the registry code for the other 3 predecessor missions manually, and they still didn't appear. The Intel install method also worked prior to the update.

When I first heard about the Intel "version" I remember people wondering why, if it merely changed the registry, it had to be the incredible size of 6MB. Obviously a "little" more than a mere reg key edit.
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission

I wondered that, too. It's probably just the wrapper that the installer has, ie. the setup exe and the image files that you see in the setup screen.

Either way, I deleted the registry key it added and replaced it with my own. Identical.

Thanks. :)

Hey wexer9, I just read your post and thought I'd add my two cents. I didn't know mine was a unique experience so I assumed everyone had the same or similar with Steam...

Tracing my steps, this is what I did:

1) Downloaded FC2 (with Fortune's Pack) via Steam. Installed and run.

2) Got the necessary (and unnecessary) patches via Steam. Started game, went to Options, entered Promo Key.

3) Searched online for any other patches/tweaks (probably the same as 1.3 though) and installed those as well.

4) The last thing I did recently was download the 'Intel' missions - honestly, this didn't seem to affect my game much. I'm pretty sure that in my first play-through of Act I, I did find 3 tapes in the North. Not sure how many there are in the South though.

5) The trigger for me has always been the phone call from the unknown employer. This happens once I re-enter Pala after the completion of the intro missions.

My S.O.P. is: Finish intro missions (exit church etc); leave Pala and take up the first buddy mission at Mike's; return to Pala (usually to take the bus to the mission target) and voila! phone rings and it's Mr. Mysterious Fake Voice.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

By the way, that's a kick-a$$ rig you have! Mine's an AMD 2 that's 3 years old - definitely in need of a new graphics card and more RAM as well as disk space. :)

.

.

SPOILER ALERT!!!

Incidentally, I searched and found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1-h59E8KJY

Note that there are SEVEN tapes, not the SIX I originally thought there were.

Okay, and you are able to see these tapes by going to "Predecessor Tapes" in the main menu? Also, out of curiosity, what OS are you using?

Yes, they appear in my Predecessor Tapes tab/page.

I'm using Windows Vista - sorry, I should have mentioned that earlier.

I entered my FC2 (with Fortune's Pack) Promo code. Then I tried every single Promo Key I found (google for them). Some things I discovered though:

1) When I first tried out FC2, it was with a friend's original FC2 game which she had purchased at a local store. Entering the various Promo Keys works well with this: Some will give an "Key Invalid" message but MOST will give the "Key Accepted" message.

2) Once I bought my FC2 (with Fortune's Pack) via Steam, NONE of the Promo Keys worked! Only the Promo Key that came with my Steam download worked.

i) Additionally, I had to be online and logged on to Steam to get the Promo Key accepted. Being offline meant the game simply couldn't register the key.

You may not have noticed, there is an option in your forum profile where you can fill in the gap to inform others about your gaming platform -- this is where some of us added info about the OS, if using a PC. I did.

Now that I think of it, the promo keys that worked before the Fortune's edition no longer worked when I tried entering them upon my reinstall. That is, I previously used the keys found on Google, and they worked, but upon my reinstall, none of them worked.

One thing intrigued me, however, you said you used a promo key that came with the Steam download? I have no heard of this. Where do you find this?

Come to think of it, Far Cry 2 doesn't even appear to have a CD key anymore, at least not that I can find. When I originally bought it, I remember having to type in a CD key to activate it, but not so when I re-installed.

Intriguing...

Wexer9, doesn't a little notification/message bar pop up everytime you double-click FC2 to start the game? In my case, there is. And it tells me to "take down my Game Key" or somesuch. That's the key code I use to activate my Fortune's Pack stuff.

No, it doesn't...there's no need to activate the Fortune's pack anymore because it comes pre-activated now. Are you saying you entered this key into the 'Promotional Content' thing? Can I get a screenshot of this notification?

Again, sorry to pester you, we're just trying to get to the bottom of this issue. :)

Hey guys - I've been out of the FC2 loop for a while, but am still interested in getting my game working.  I contacted Ubisoft again and "Jason" has gone from saying it's a "known issue" which is being "looked into" to saying I need to contact Steam Support.  Yeah right.

Anyway I read the recent posts by Mir24 (thanks for joining the discussion!) and continued posts by everyone.  I did try reinstalling FC2 a few times without doing any regedits or other installations.  I simply reinstalled the game (Steam) and entered my code like Mir24 described.  Yet for me, nothing.  I played most of the way through Act I and never had that phone call, no envelopes, nothing.

So what is going on here?  Is there some new information or strategies to try?

Glad to see everything is still buzzing over here.  :)

As far as I am concerned, I just ignored the glitch of repeated Boot Tapes, but I'm afraid there is no solution, let alone a simple one, for the issues you're dealing with. Sorry to hear that those armies of Jasons still haven't learned about the nature of the problem.

Can you leave all the predecessor missions until Act 2? Also, it seems like you need to do some other mission in between them - is that right?
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission

You can leave them until Act 2, sure. And no, I think you can just go and collect the other letters right after, though I'm not positive on that - can someone else give confirmation on this?
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission

I never did notice what the trigger for a new envelope was, but once I collected a tape, it was a while before another envelope appeared.  In the mean time, I did other FC2 activities like main and side missions.  One thing I do know is that you can get an envelope, which triggers the white Predecessor icon, and you can do whatever you like for as long as you like and you don't lose the current Predecessor mission.
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission

I once did what is on your mind, Yxklyx. I went to Bowa, then returned to Leboa only to finish the Predecessor missions one after another, nothing else. So no, you don't need missions in between and yes, you can do them whenever you like. :)

G'Day All,

I've been lurking for quite a while now, and registered a few days ago, but this is my first post.

I'm having the same problem with the lack of Predecessor missions, with a twist.

I bough a DVD Retail version of FC2 to install on my Win XP PC. In the DVD case there was a notice with a registration key that said that if I created an Ubisoft account and then entered that code, it would unlock the Fortunes Pack.

I did so, and got a "Bonus Content Enabled" message. The extra weapons and vehicles w@&k fine, all the time. Still no Predecessor Missions, though.

Here is where it gets weird - I just fired up FC2 and allowed it online access (I usually have my internet connection disabled in XP; I use linux for using the 'net). Lo and behold, the Predecessor Tapes listing appeared in the pause menu, and the envelope icon shows up on the map Legend. This is a brand new game (my 4th time through) and I'm currently collecting diamonds, after having done the 4 Gun Shop missions. These are the only missions I've done, aside from the malaria meds one from the priest. I've yet to get a call, but I haven't been in town yet.

I then quit FC2 and restarted it without giving it access to the 'net. The Predeccessor Tapes are now missing from the pause screen tabs, and the Envelope icon is missing from the map Legend.

I had already added the Registry keys that were made available at this  (thanks for that!!)forum.

Frankly, I'm stumped. I do know that I'm not happy with the thought that I'd have to be online in order to get those extra missions.

I've read every post in this thread, and found no solution, though I'm impressed with the amount of effort put into trying to solve it.

Unfortunately, I have no solutions to add, but I thought I may as well add to the information available about this problem, in hopes it may lead someone else towards a solution.

Thanks for taking the time to read this long post by a gamer that has hit the 50 year mark, but still enjoys gaming as much as ever I did.

Welcome to OWG, Didius Falco, old chap!

I'm pretty sure you already know you're just a perfect match here at your young age  ;D I like the fact that we keep gathering the real boys here ;D (OK, younger members are just as welcome ;) )

Thanks for that interesting post of yours. My first thought was that there wasn't a necessity for being online when playing FC2, unless you use that FC2 launcher program. I used it at first but wanted to play offline so I discarded it.. you can fire up FC2 just fine using the game's exe which is what I do. My predecessor missions w@&k offline, so I have no idea why yours don't. Indeed, strange..

Anyway, now that you're "in," I do hope to read some more from you. After four playthroughs, there have to be some stories waiting to be told by you ;D  :-X

Hey Didius Falco, thanks for posting. Welcome to the Old Folks' Home :-()

Sorry to hear about that weird prob you're having. Incidentally, I believe the Predecessor missions don't come with the Fortune Pack. Like you, I bought a retail version of FC2, then sometime later got the Fortune Pack on disk through e-bay Australia. There were no Predecessor missions until I downloaded and applied the registry patch from this esteemed site.

Did you try this one?

http://openworldgames.org/owg/forums/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=6 (http://openworldgames.org/owg/forums/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=6)

If not, try downloading and just running that. I've never had a problem with it, and I play offline all the time. Hope that helps :)

In the meantime, I'm looking forward to hearing some merc tales! :-X

I'll add my welcome too  :-X

As to the predecessor missions - they must be embedded in the game from the beginning.  Although my memory fails me on occasion, I recall just entering the codes to gain access to the missions which means that the code is already in the game.  It is difficult to believe that the developers would remove the predecessor code (too much trouble).

I do know that the patches that were issued changed working parts of my game into non-working problems - i.e., the boots tape.

In any case, good luck on a solution, and please post if you find the answer  ;)

Post by: Didius Falco on August 13, 2010, 05:02:20 PM
I tried using just FarCry2.exe, but no luck. I also got the first phone call, saved and reloaded with the 'net disabled and still had access to the first tape mission, but no Predecessor Tape tab in the menu and no envelope icon in the legend.

I have to say though, I'm caring less and less - they seem really easy missions (I've done two, but haven't gotten the third one yet...), so I might just give 'em a miss.

I may have one more look through the Ubi forums and maybe enter a support ticket. At the least, it'll keep Jason employed...

I do have a couple of interesting stories - I'll look for an appropriate thread to post 'em in.

It's less than 2 weeks until Mafia 2 comes out, and my mouth is watering for that one. I think I'll finish up this round and reload Mafia and play it to get in the mood. <G>

On Edit: I've submitted a Tech Support Request. I'll pas along anything I find out.

Thanks!

Hullo fellow sandboxers - Great site you got here!

Until yesterday morning I had no idea what the 'additional content' was due to only using the map-editor for the first year I owned this game and a couple of odd hours in multiplayer running a test server.

After spending 200+ hours constructing a custom-map I decided it might be time for me to play through the SP game in order to better understand the nuances. So after a couple of days running around getting a better feel for the engine, I thought I might want to see what the additional content was... Which brings me here.

Like many others here I was really hoping that the bugs would be well worked out 2 years after release. It's getting, if not already passed it's used by date and one of the few things that will keep it alive for years to come is community interest.
Before yesterday it didn't matter to me that I didn't have additional content unlocked, but after reading about the problem I became increasingly interested in a solution, so I tried the reg fixes, intel missions, codes etc.

Sure enough I have exactly the same problem as Rangoon with a couple of minor differences to begin with but identical symptoms. I purchased FC2 from steam without the DLC, then purchased the DLC before it went free/packaged. I remember that there was 2 CD keys, 1 for the game, 1 for the DLC. (The DLC Key has vanished since they merged.) - Also I'm on Win7x64.

After reading 34 pages on the subject I don't have much to say that hasn't already been said but I'll try to nut out a solution...
:D  - How dissapointing that after 10+(?) months there is no definitive sign to a workable solultion for this problem...

Two Questions (Sorry if they've already been covered I wasn't going to read through 33 pages again.) :
1. Can anyone confirm/eliminate that this is isolated to 64-bit OS's?
2. Does anyone know of anyone at all that has the steam distribution that CAN access the bonus content
?

It's definitely not limited to 64-bit OS, my previous 32-bit XP experienced it as well.

Same story on my PS3 and Vista x64.  I suspect that Ubisoft has no intention of providing a solution, else they'd have done so long ago.

Welcome to OWG by the way - always nice to "see a new face".

Yeap, welcome to OWG DaWorFizm!

Funny how people have very different approaches to a game. You said you spent 200+ hours creating maps and after a year or so you decided to give SP a go...   ???

That`s diametrically opposite to my approach  :-()

I`d never get a game if not for the SP, which I plunge in as soon as I fire the game for the first time. I might even play with the map editor and maybe, just maybe, try a MP match, but I most definitely will spend hundreds of hours on SP instead!

Hope you enjoy the SP!  :-X

Now, since you're here, and since you're "new" to FC2 (SP), you might enjoy the truckloads of unique stuff we've gathered here. People who visit us for FC2 usually find bits and pieces they never knew existed, so I hope you're going to enjoy the site. We're featuring a couple of those games you're currently playing, so maybe we can interact a little and exchange thoughts and stories -- we do like to read (and post) stuff like that  :)

Welcome to the forums  DaWorFizm.  :)

I'm afraid I can't add anything to the comments the others have posted.  My approach to the game has been to play around the flaws because the level of my tech skills follow a declining curve that when faced with poking at the programming rapidly declines to zero.

I don't fix it, I just drive it as if I stole it!  (Wait, since FC2 came free with my computer...  I guess I did kind of steal it.  >:D )

Thank you all for the warm welcome, I'm already feeling quite at home here.

-I doubt I'll spend much more time on this due to the consensus of it being a dead issue,  I'll just push it aside for now and keep an eye on it. (So as not to hijack the thread I'll go post replies elsewhere.)

Don't worry too much about hijacking threads - we do it all the time  :-()

We'd rather see people posting in a technically incorrect area rather than not posting at all.  Here at OWG the rules are simple:

I am very grateful for this thread for getting me back into Far Cry 2, though! I had forgotten how great this game was. Plus, I can nearly max the game with an acceptable frame rate on my new computer. And boy, does it look good!

There was one problem, however. There was an unacceptable stutter while driving. Luckily, I remedied the problem by switching the DirectX 10 render mode (I had accidentally left it on 9).  ;D

Good times. :-X

You know how you need to get the envelope at the shack just northeast of the southeast bus stop before the white predecessor icon shows?  In my current play, I plan to pick up the envelope as soon as it is available, and then get the tape when I end up on a mission to that area.  For instance, the first tape was at PetroSahel, and I waited until I did the Jossip mission to blow the propane tank (still one of my favorites - did it again with a single shot from the 6P9).  Next tape was at the fort, and I waited until I did the Prince/King mission before collecting that tape.

As a funny aside, whenever I pick up the envelope, I'm making it a practice to kill the three mercs by running them over - the first time it was in the dune buggy, and the second time was with the quad runner - not a single wasted bullet  >:D

The icon for the third Predecessor mission (The Bolivian) appeared at the airport, so I waited for a mission that would take me there.  Fortunately I took an assassination mission in which the mark just happened to be in the same hangar as the tape - talk about luck.

I went in from the west, by the railroad tracks, then to the small pond west of the shacks.  As I moved toward the hangar, I met no resistance at all - evidently the target's friends had completely abandoned him to his fate, and not a single merc was anywhere in the area.
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission

Another Predecessor mission - this I think was the Frenchman - tape was beneath the sniper tower in Sepoko.  I have a favorite sniper position in the hills on the west side of town, and brought an AS-50 to torch flammables - two of my favorites are the fuel pile in the AT shack on the northwest corner, and the small propane tank on the east side of town.

Igniting both of these sent the mercs into a panic, but they eventually found my position.  I believe they were a bit foolhardy to run through dry grass when they had to know that I was carrying a few bottles of flammable liquid  >:D

Their falsetto yelling was music to my ears  :-()
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission
Post by: Art Blade on January 25, 2011, 05:22:30 PM
Pity we can't mod the game. Imagine a bottle of flammable liquid that won't  start to burn the moment you throw it. Instead you'd be given a match box. Just for the sterling effect and style. Throw the bottle at a merc, even better: whack him on his head with it and admire his facial expression of utter surprise, and then flick a burning match at him  >:D
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission
Post by: PZ on January 25, 2011, 05:31:19 PM
Truly a pity we can't mod this nor the Assassin's Creed series - would hugely extend the game play.

FC2  was initially the reason that I built my current gaming rig, but now, the main reason I'm on the computer when gaming is to experiment with mods (other than FC2 of course)  :-()

Normal?  I'd say the appropriate word would be mandatory.   :-D  >:D  >:D

For fish in the barrel fun while I'm in god mode with no detect turned on a favorite sport of mine is getting close enough to play the game I call Bonking them on the Conk (that is to say bouncing live grenades off their foreheads).  They look surprised and try to run away but I've noticed that firing a random shot makes them forget about the grenade for a moment and then they forget about everything.   ;D

So, "mandatory" then.. alright. I'm surrounded by insanely cruel gamers.. but I'm one of them  >:D

And you've just proven that you know the basics of our tips and tactics  :)

Quote from: Art Blade on April 11, 2009, 10:31:51 PM
1) Tactics: Blow up a bunch of mercs

If you have the chance to try this, you may like it:

Find cover and hide. Then shoot with a silenced weapon somewhere near a bad guy -- he and his friends will come and investigate where your rounds hit. Then throw a grenade at them -- they will want to flee. Now shoot again next to the group, they will immediately freeze and again want to investigate the impacts. Say "sorry" and watch them blow up all together  ;D

edit: to stop the mercs from fleeing (from a grenade), you can as well shoot at them, as quickly as possible after your grenade is out, with a silenced weapon such as MP5. I did that a couple of times now, mostly got them all, so I wanted you to know :)

Maybe I should have said mandru-tory.     :-D

Art! I think you just helped me discovered one of my core gamer principals!  8)

The anticipation gap:

Anything taking longer than the 2.5 seconds for a thrown grenade to go off starts an automatic timer that subtracts from the enjoyment quotient and adds to the tedium factor.

Has anyone had any luck with this?

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=20795317&posted=1 (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=20795317&posted=1)

I guess the idea is just to make sure you enter the Steam CD Key more than once.  I am pretty sure I did this way back when all this began, but I've tried it again now.  So far nothing is different.

Will there ever be an envelope by that first bus before a phone call?  Or is there always a phone call first?

I went so far as to install my DVD retail version, and (on Steam support's advice) used my Steam CD key in the retail version.  That did not w@&k.  I then uninstalled that, reinstalled the Steam version and tried the key again, for sure multiple times - both before and after starting a new game.

Another thing Steam support suggested was to delete everything from my Steam folder, except the games folder and Steam.exe.  I hesitate to try this, but I might just go ahead and do it.

Not me, but my predecessor missions are working fine - just started another couple of plays through, on the PC and on the PS3.  I'd used the codes available online, and did not have any Steam games at the time.  Sorry I can't help more.

However, my Jackal tapes are still broken - both platforms, and still stuck on the 5th tape - boots

Hey, I updated that post with clearer steps with the latest info. As I said on the Steam Forum, I have retried the steps and they w@&k perfectly for me. None of the other users have complained that it hasn't worked for them, so I'm confident we can troubleshoot a solution as to why it isn't working for you.

I'm almost done with my current playthrough, and will be starting a fresh one at some point, so I'll be seeing how the Predecessor stuff plays out from the beginning next time rather than catching it midway...

Horrible.

However, the phone call is sort of an acoustic signal that the DLC is now active. I have never seen an envelope prior to receiving that call.

Correct,
Be sure to check your main map first though.  Unless you see the white envelope icon on your main map, there is nothing to do.  They only appear once in a while.
well I m new here and m playing FC2. well I got a small problem.... the predecessor tape is on the roof of the stranded bus near south east of Pala.... near a bus stand. how do I get on top of it to get the tapes????
pls help.....
Title: Re: Predecessor Mission
Post by: PZ on March 18, 2012, 08:44:22 PM
I'm not sure, but I think you mean the old wrecked bus near the southeast bus stop - yes?  If so, there is a diamond on top of the bus, not the tape.  To get the diamond, go around to the uphill side of the bus and you can run/jump to the top of the bus to retrieve the diamond.  Alternately, you can park an assault truck near the bus and stand on top to get to the bus roof.

As to the predecessor tape, this is the location where you receive the mission - look for the white envelope on the table where you find the flare pistol.  Pick up the envelope and you will see a white icon on the map indicating the location of a predecessor tape.

Welcome sourav190994.  :-X

I believe it's at the South end of the bus but there is some fencing that you can hop up on and then w@&k your way around to make the jump the rest of the way to the top.  At least that's how I always get up there.

I think there's also one of the Jackal tapes on the bench in front of that bus.  It's a bus-y spot.  ;)

taking a running start from the uphill side then jump always worked for me, although once or twice my jump took me up and over the bus which resulted in me coming to a sudden halt in front of the table so one of my buddies had to drag my sorry a$$ away from there      :-D

Welcome to OWG, sourav  :)

I always ask the friendly mercs if they like to pass me the diamond along with the envelope. I also always end up killing them all for being so uncooperative and have to do just what the rest of you do: climb up the bus myself and take the stone and then grab the envelope. :)
