Hello everyone and greetings to those of you who viewed the thread. I'm new here to these forums so pardon me if this is misplaced.
I got this game way back at launch and gave up on it due to the boat escort mission at the start of the southern map. I was playing on the second hardest difficulty, Hardcore I believe, and decided to pick it back up in the past three weeks. I finally got back into it and finished it about six days ago. I have to say this is now my favorite game out there even now usurping even the likes of the resident evil franchise.
Now that there seems to be a drought of decent games getting released for awhile I decided to start this up again and record it.after hunting on youtube for a good thirty minutes and not finding anyone else playing it so I decided what the heck and jumped right in.
So far I plan on recording all the main faction missions as well as some side missions and i plan to do so in a some what unique way. I plan to recorded just the missions but three times a piece. once for a full on assault, once with a more stealthy approach, and finally a mix of sorts for a well planned thought out tactical solution. Additionally I plan to have highlights and other parts of interest in a highlight reel minisode to see what works really well on each individual mission from my point of view.
It is in my hopes that i can have these videos loose on the internet which will hopefully trigger some people out there to pick this up. If I can get one person to say to themselves, "This game has a lot of choices to be made and it really is a free roam FPS... MINE !" then my mission is done.

the first and second are up now so I'll try this embedding out to see how this works. I'm still not entirely sure how that is done so if someone could tell me exactly how to do that it would be much appreciated. also if someone could inform me on the thread BUMP policy around here that would be great as well. I don't want to become a nuisance here in my first week or so posting the new videos.

dke58, to "bump" usually means "put back on top" - If a thread didn't get any attention and therefore slowly sinking down to the bottom of the pages of a forum, submitting a new post with the only purpose of putting the thread up on top (as new posts do) is the "bump" to it ;)

As for the embedding... go to the gallery, video, add new item, and there you'll find an empty entry where you can paste the URL code of Youtube. Submit, and you'll see your vid is visible, and below will be an embed code you can copy and paste in your post.

A little late to the thread, but welcome to OWG Mechsican - From reading your initial post, it sounds like you have the true OWG passion that makes this the best collection of members on the net, in my humble opinion. And like you, I still believe this is the best game out there (even though I'm developing a passion for ARMA2).
As to forum policies, the only one that anyone needs to observe is to have fun. Bumping (I didn't even know what that term meant) is something that I'd probably expect to see if a post did not receive a response. I don't think you need worry though, it is just about guaranteed that you'll see responses to each and every post. :-X

Mechsican, for readability reasons I deleted my post prior to PZ's. May I suggest that if you have questions you post them (bumping, hehe) rather than asking inside existing posts by way of editing? Two things spring to mind. Considering you're on console, some people here might be interested in how you record, like what hard/software you use. And, since you're around CockFight now, ever read about our "merc war" ? Would be fun if you incorporated some of that in your unique vid tutorial... I reckon your youtube audience never saw anything alike either ;)

As for this "merc war" you speak of I have no insight as to what you are talking about. Granted I haven't been here long so its to be expected that I wouldn't be clued in.

You can also easily start the merc wars on the console - I do it regularly now on every time that I need pass through the area. Loads of fun to watch the mercs kill one another from afar. :-X

i might just have to try this at some point. If only i had a Gaming Quality PC and not a cruddy two hundred dollar laptop from a black Friday Walmart sale I'd be able to check out that save. :-\

I'm pretty pumped for it myself. It will be the true sample of what all the mission videos will be like. Also a small Good, Bad, and Glitched/random occurrences highlight was thrown in for good measure to see if that is well accepted or not.
in the first run of the training mission something odd happens which I love. I also have two video clips from my broadcast channel on justin.tv that I know you all will love. When uploading files here will FLV's w@&k or should I just do a direct link to the clips. I know the more footage on the site the better so It would be good to know.
no idea about FLV uploads, but links should w@&k just fine. Plus, they will be instantly available because they don't need verification (uploaded files do) ;)

Just watched #3 in the gallery. Man, don't worry about "epic failures" - they show me I'm not the only one who commits them, and made me chuckle a couple of times ;) Actually, those make your vids even more likeable :-X
I loved the guy on his knees, you aim, fire, and miss because he bends over in time LOL ;D ;D Tell you what, I have that a lot. I sometimes manage to fire a complete bloody clip of my MP5 at a guy close enough to me I could spit and hit, but my bullets keep zipping all around him adding up to a gigantic miss ;D
And mercs facing one but shooting in another direction, I know that too. Nice capture there :)

The other clip, yeah... You know, I just got up, sipping a coffee, eyes open 50%, and then that AT came jumping at you. I opened my eyes 100% LOL ;D And funny how those mercs didn't want to quit dying there... strange, but funny too. I had that happen only once, and I remember I was amazed at how long I could walk away still hearing it.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it and that you enjoy my failure. Part four is currently on the cutting room floor and about to add my voice over so stay tuned. i should be able to get four, five, and six finished today that will round out the tutorial mission and finally allow me to start playing again.

Everything here actually is worth reading... our members have a way of playing FC2 and a love for the game I never saw anywhere. D_B is our skilled mapper who came up with excellent edited maps for FC2, DKM2 runs a server, and everyone else here has great talents too, I am always happy to read every post from them. I hope you'll find something inspiring you and giving you ideas what to do in your vids or unrecorded gameplay :)

Art - The HD option only improves the video if you are watching it from youtube. the embedded player doesn't increase in size like it would on youtube itself. I Produce the videos at a 1280px by 720px for the 16:9 ratio.
Currently I am using a Dazzle DVC 100 external capture card and the Pinnacle studios video editing software that its packaged with which was 50 dollars at best buy. I'm thinking about buying an HD version of that for component capture but thats 100 so I'm kind of iffy on if I want to buy that or not.

I am a total idiot, and proud to say so. I've thought about capturing my play on the console periodically, but didn't come up with anything. Here's where I show my stupidity - I have a USB version of Pinacle's PCTV HD which accepts coaxial or component video - easy to connect the cables from my flat panel TV. To compound my stupidity listen to this - I have routinely used that device to record some of my satellite TV shows to my laptop's disk - talk about having the solution staring you right in the face, and not being able to see it. I need to install an emoticon where I can kick myself in the a$$.
awwwwww come ON! it's no sin to commit a mistake. Only not to learn from it ;D Now you see you've got all you wanted, don't even need to purchase it, so you should be happy :)

no problem PZ. it took me a good hour or so to figure out why i wasn't getting the component and RWY to output together like people say it can. I totally forgot about the switch on the A/V cord that needs to be flipped to allow duel output.
Also episode four finally has my voice on it and is being published. should be on the tube and here by at least 5:30pm EST.

more or less, yes. Usually something like one clip and maybe plus one or two more rounds. :) With a Makarov, that is.
its odd with barrels ssometimes tho as you can machette a yellow one and it hardly hurts (unless you stand still in the fire).
Also if your rolling barrels to use Offensively sometimes they will explode while rolling (not had chance to watch your vids yet but defo will do tomorrow)
it can also take up to 3 hits from Dragunov or M1903 to set them off.
those barrels, like most of the stuff in FC2, have something like a damage or hit counter. If the barrel had been rammed it would be close to exploding, so one or two shots would set it off, or even rolling it over a pebble :)
I've seen something in the vid that reminds me of a trick. When you see a couple of mercs close to each other and chuck a grenade over, they will flee in all directions. Unless. Unless you shoot (and hit) one of them. That will make them stop moving and look around to spot the shooter. If you do it quickly, the grenade will take them all out ;D
in a few places there are vehicles, barrels and fuel or ammo all close together and mercs are very often daft enough to gather around it , perfect for charging at full speed then jumping out at last moment, get some very very big bangs
yeah, and if that didn't help, a special gift the form of a pineapple thrown in behind will always do the trick ;D

the first thing I'm doing is trying to get all the diamonds possible in the environment and by assassination missions. i already got my three weapon crates as of now as and have about 38 diamonds for my stealth suit. After that comes one health upgrade then to start buying my weapons.
Mechisan, the Dazzle you have is listed as 100 right? I have one that has no other markings but the name. Are they the same? Also is your video cam analogue or digital? Thanks for your answers.

Don't mean to answer for Mech, and I'm sure he can add more, but no camera is involved - the PS3 output is directed into an external piece of hardware which in turn feeds into the digital guts of the computer. Check out this link (http://www.everythingusb.com/pinnacle_pctv_hd_pro_stick.html) to the hardware I've had for at least a year now (I still feel stupid) but have not used yet for the analog output from the console.
Exactly as PZ says. i have my 360's component cords into my TV and the analog RWY into the Dazzle. Mine is red in coloration as apposed to the newer DVC 100 model which is white. I also have two audio splitter cables to turn the 360's two audio outputs into four so i get audio capture and output through my TV.
I'm glad we now have our console people w@&k together and find out what they wanted to know for some time now. Thanks Mech for the "input" ;) :-X
Alright part #5, which is the final part of the intro is uploaded. expect it to be live within the hour. As for a gameplay update I now have finished all convoy missions and two assassination missions. I have all three weapon crates, camo suit, and the medium syrette pack and 3 spare diamonds. When i get all the assassination missions and as many diamonds as i can muster I will begin the main faction missions.

Another question is, my computer on the second floor has a Windows Media Setup (the son's old puter, and he watched TV on it) and the PS3 is in the basement two floors down. The son can have us wireless, probably with little trouble, so can the wireless be used to send the images up and is capture via the PS3 do-able? Inquiring minds want to know. I heard that someplace.

another choice if possible would be to run a long USB extension cord through the floor/ceiling much like I did with a cable line since we didn't have one in my bedroom.
Watching your vids I realized I had switched the music off since the end of my 1st playthrough.. So I fired FC2 (3rd run), switched music on and felt that same feeling I had during my first go.... aaahhhhaaahhhhh.... the feeling of Africa again... I've forgoten how immersive is the music in FC2.
Had a great FC2 session last evening... excellent for a refreshing change from ArmA2's simulation.

I read YouTube doubled upload filesize from 1 to 2 gb so HD stuff fits, don't know if non-hd vids could be 2 gb too meaning double length?
Hehe, I was expecting some Mickey Mouse voices but speeding up your vid didn't really have that effect.
I think the vid quality was not as good as the first vids, did you change some settings? Edit: watched it again, now perfect. Probably what you said "still processing" problem the first time I watched.
A tip for "Escape the cease-fire zone". When you walk out of the back of that garage in Pala, don't go towards MiKe's, go the other direction. About only a couple of steps away is a boat peer, already outside the cease fire zone. Just wait a couple of seconds (well, maybe 20-30 secs) and the message "you escaped" should pop up. Much faster like that, and the mercs usually won't follow you outside the zone.
JRD - good to hear that it seems fresh again. I really enjoy the music when the combat kicks in you know it before you see someone in your face. It may take a bit out of the surprise of combat but i enjoy it.
Art - No different settings you are just happening to watch them before they are fully processed. If you wait or look on youtube it'll say above the video that its still processing and video quality may increase or some such. ;D
as for escaping good tip.
I hope we are not developing a habit of writing like this lol ;D
Escaping there seems a little easier for me, because not many mercs there watching you, if any :)

Yeah, you can send video via a wireless rf device. Check out this link (http://www.x10.com/products/vk54a_sp_lr_ps69.html) to the X-10 home control site. For anyone not familiar with X-10, that is the company that allows you to control your lights, appliances, etc via an rf controller, and you can even program macros to have your lights come on automatically just before you get home, and turn on the coffee maker in the morning before you get up.
Approximately $50 will get you a video sender and $50-100 will get you the TV input device (Go to any local PC shop and ask for a TV capture card)

Have to add, I was really only in a "do nothing" mode, so I leaned back, sipped a coffe, and enjoyed watching you play FC2 live. Spent quite a bit of time, until you had enough... funny things then: Missing another headshot (bullet hit the wall first), and your brutal driving LOL always cross country, engine smoking, hitting trees ever so often... I had a good time ;D
Hello again folks sorry for the lack of updates but I've been busy as of late with w@&k so new parts might show up as soon as Saturday or as late as Monday.
also I've been reading a lot of retiredgord's missions and i must say I wish I had half the experiences he has had or at least could write with such style.
Mechsican thank you very much for the compliment. I enjoy the writing but I have to say you've got a great thing there yourself. I was trying to think of a way to do that myself but can't get the A/truck out of the garage.
I'm now inspired to write a bit better so that the words can be like a picture and maybe more enjoyable for the readers.
Both of you have excellent ways of expressing yourselves, and I enjoy both forms of the media. Keep up the good w@&k; there are many more people that enjoy your posts than reply to them - sometimes new members are reluctant to post, and guests hesitant to register for membership because of bad experiences elsewhere. :-X
I'd like to start recording some of my PS3 adventures using the USB capture device, but fear that my wife might tip over the edge if I add computer equipment to the console in the bedroom. It at least looks neat and tidy now mounted on the wall, but adding wires and hardware might be another story... ;)
PZ if you ever go that route make sure the vid camera for conferencing is not set up or it;ll be "PZ, u gotta lot of 'splainin to do" Ricky Ricardo's voice
:) Just been checking our your vids, Mechsican. You're doing the game, and the gamers, a massive service! It's cool to watch someone else play, I've never done that before. I've also learned some stuff (didn't realize the bottles of water restored some health, I thought they were petrol for Molotovs or something. D'oh!) As for "epic failures", if we didn't get turned into merc chew-toys once in a while it'd get boring. Besides, it makes the paybacks more satisfying.

Without the praise I wouldn't have the motivation to continue doing these things. can't tell you how many play throughs i give up on merely because no one responds to it whether it be good or bad. Thanks to this supportive community of tightly knit far cry 2 nut cases I think I won't have a problem sticking with this one. :D

For those who haven't visited Mech's link (and for you, Mech, hehe) I'd like to describe what I expected, saw, and thought, when I first did it, from my memory:

Alright, there we go. Yes, the same link, but hey, not the usual vids playing in that small preview window, but some FC2 going on, and it's not one of the vids posted on OWG. Ah, and a chat is up and running. The vid channel is populated with 88 viewers (geez, we had 22 visitors tops).
Checking the chat... "me: lo" - darn, a popup urging me to register... nah. Can't be bothered right now, might only stay a couple of minutes anyway. Hold it... I just read someone post something and hear Mechsican reply to the comment in the chat... it's a fricking live vid stream! I am actually watching him play live FC2, and he's commenting his own actions. Plus he's capable of reading the chat and replying to it while playing FC2.
Oh, now he's ringing someone up or so. I can hear like two, no, three voices now. A voice conference going on there... those guys apparently playing something else, yet they talk. With Mech. And he reads the chat and responds to that as well. And he's playing FC2. On Infamous difficulty, even... OMFG some people are really wired. And I thought I was a maniac already... haha, incredible."

Mech, I never knew one could get so deep into all that :) How the hell can you do that ;D I prefer playing FC2 in peace and quiet (apart from mind-blowing explosions when my 5.1 speakers half jump off the desk and supporting stands) and perhaps some fave tunes in the background. Hehehehe
I don't know if you'll ever find time to read some more of the great stuff we collected here, but I do hope you'll give it a try. Some of it might give you inspirations, like retiredgord's great stories, and perhaps learn about things you never thought existed in FC2. Might add to your gaming and recording it would certainly be fun for all of us, we'd be happy to see some of it in your vids (since you asked for "Thoughts/Ideas") :)
Now, looking forward to watching the next vid of yours. I am certain you already have more fans here on our site, even if they don't post :) As JRD said, keep them coming :-X

I am actually watching him play live FC2, and he's commenting his own actions. Plus he's capable of reading the chat and replying to it while playing FC2.
Oh, now he's ringing someone up or so. I can hear like two, no, three voices now. A voice conference going on there... those guys apparently playing something else, yet they talk. With Mech. And he reads the chat and responds to that as well. And he's playing FC2. On Infamous difficulty, even... OMFG some people are really wired. And I thought I was a maniac already... haha, incredible."

On a more serious note I have now acquired all the diamonds in the northern territory except for the south east and southern quadrants. I expect I'll be able to start the first mission tomorrow since I'll be trying to get those pesky last few tonight before I sleep.
I have to say starting the game with nothing and hunting those diamonds down on infamous difficulty is super annoying. without the help of the DLC shotguns and the crossbow i don't think I would have been able to.

To get more diamonds, you might want to do a couple of assassination jobs :) But once you start with those main/plot missions, you'll soon get loads of those precious stones :) Looking forward to you upcoming vid :) :-X
I've already finished those as well. all that is left are the buddy missions and main faction missions as well as those silly predecessor tape missions which I will surely ignore.
I was never deeply interested in those tapes either. Well, I did collect a few, when I happened to be around in the area with nothing else on my mind. ;)
I collected them once, hoping to have some insights on the Jackal's story... not too deep though, Reuben's Blog is much better to understand the plot.

well all three attempts are done and the first mission will be about 12 or so parts if i include everything... which is not so good.
on the bright side there is never a dull moment especially in the later parts of the third attempt. simply amazing buddies is all i can say for now.
I'll try and get two parts done today at some point and three everyday after so i can start mission 2. more updates to come during the week.
The quality of the image in HD is really good. That first GP you come to where you were shooting the merc in the chest - when you use the "snap to" aiming on the consoles, it often hits the stationary weapon post, so there is a good chance that is what happened in your case.
Also, when you get a chance, this is the GP near the CockFight arena - if you drive full speed through this GP and then head through the arena, you'll likely start a merc war - stop on the far side of the arena area (outside of it) and run back toward the area - you'll probably hear gun fire if you've been successful.

Enjoyed episode 7 - a couple of things I can relate to:
- Malaria - I was on a mission where I needed to fly a glider: make a sharp U-turn to get to the other side of a gorge. Just as I pick up the glider to fly - you guessed it - malaria hits.
- You kill the Police Chief's brother and somehow he miraculously calls the Chief. I did a buddy rescue where I released a buddy in Sediko - went in stealth and no one noticed me. When released, the buddy says "Good, you killed them all... we'd better leave before the reinforcements arrive..." or words to that effect. I felt a bit stifled that I could not reply "You must be kidding you moron... no one even knows I was here!"
I guess I can understand ubi not writing in many different comments for each character to say when rescued. I think I'd be even more suspicion towards them if he said something like, "Good w@&k popping that guy in a$$ with a dart and teabaggin' his face man wish I could do the same. Guess we should spilt up and get out of here."
Then again hearing Marty or Josip say that would be pretty fantastic.
When I've done stealth rescue of buddies, they sometimes say

One thing springs to mind, when you started off with that Reuben character at Mike's who kept talking... you can just walk away, he'll stop and shout "I meant what I said about the tapes" and be done ;D You can do that with APR/UFLL missions too, just go into the briefing room, look for the ledger and grab it - they'll say something like "this one wants to w@&k" and give you a very brief summary of your mission, you get paid and can leave :)
Nice aiming by the way, considering you're not using a mouse. Some guys with consoles seem to find it very hard to aim without a "snap-to" aid, but watching you I don't think you use any aiming help, do you?
Oh, and I admit that I am childish enough to actually rewind the first 15 or so seconds of the last vid for at least ten times, tears in my eyes from laughing so hard I nearly choked, especially on the second belch ;D
I too am enjoying watching someone else's playthrough...totally different style than mine...and that's probably a good thing ;D

I realised I use grenades a lot after watching your vids.... love when I send a merc up into air ;)
Also, the sense of consequence is also much greater while playing in the console... you have to use buddy rescues and if its not available, then you are really on your own... I play on PC and tend to quicksave A LOT, I mean really a lot... like 935 savefiles on my 1st run....
Whish i could have a feeling of that you have on console ;)
Glad you all are enjoying it and getting something out of it as well. By that I mean the desperation of not having a buddy, the usefulness of grenades, or at least learning something.
Thanks for the tip about the mission accepting Art that will make the second and third attempts go a bit faster recording wise. part 10 is taking a bit of w@&k because the first section is ending and the highlights are coming up and its taking some time to find the good bad and funny bits.
If i can employ the help of you wonderful folks watch the first APR mission stuff again and give me some time frames on each video of what you think should be possible highlights. I've been really busy lately which is rather annoying and can't get much done.

Hey Mechsican, don't force yourself to it if you have no time or if you are not really enjoying doing it... at OWG we do what we want for fun, not because someone is expecting us to do something. Take your break, chillax, and real life should be considered important, whereas gaming is not. Hearing you yawning and regarding some of your comments I'd say "slow down a bit" for your own good, man... When your energy bar is restored and college allows it, have some fun with your games. If you find time to record some of that gaming, post it. FC2 isn't exactly something you go through start-finish in half an hour, and doing it three ways takes a LOT of time. All the editing and dubbing on top... man, that's a hell of a lot of w@&k. Maybe you can skip the idea of a complete walk-through with different approaches. Maybe only do some "best of" or only missions you think are special, just to reduce the amount of w@&k, so you can chillax a little. Don't get me wrong, this is not to discourage you, but because you worry me a little ;) Here at OWG we are all taking it easy and come here to share fun and passion, and I'd like you to join the relaxed and easy-going way of our group. Maybe I got the wrong impression, but then again, I needed to tell you :)

Nice movie :) Funny how you surprise yourself sometimes, "what am I doing there? I hope I'm not going to... oh no, yes, I am" or something to that effect, lol
A few tips:
If your gun ran dry, pick up ammo and automatically reload (you did) but... then pick up ammo again just after reloading your gun. You are right about your ammo stock can only hold a certain amount, but if you take from that, there's room for a refill (dart gun at the end of your last movie) :)
Try this with IEDs: If I remember correctly, you can pick them up once you ran out of them. say, drop all of them, then pick them up again. best if you dropped one by accident, previous vid with your car, stack up all IEDs and grab them. You can stick them to one another :)
If you drop an IED into the water, the remote will still set it off.
Oh, the brief flash of light when you got out that very dark hut, that's an effect of HDR. The machine tries to brighten up very dark surroundings (black inside of the hut, especially when close to a wall = completely black) so if you peek outside, the graphics "overshoot" and return to normal quickly. That happens on PC too.

I've found that if I drop say, four IEDs singly, I can only pick three back up, and the last one will stay where it is, ie. I don't get a hand icon for it. If I drop three, I can only pick two back up. It seems that whatever the limit is on how many I can carry, and I drop them all, I can only pick back up limit-1.
