I was doing the mission to kill Prosper Kouassi at the Goka Falls Lodge this morning and experienced something new for me. I started on the west side of the bridge and sniped most of the guards near the lodge, then worked my way into the back room where Kouassi stood. Threw 2 IEDs on the floor and then worked my way back to the west side of the bridge and detonated. As expected, I received the Mission completed message and the second wave of mercs spawned. This time, the IEDs had torched the entire lodge building - all was afire. Then a merc spotted me and started on the bridge toward my location when much to my surprise, the bridge collapsed under him and he went screaming into the gorge. The other mercs heard him and collected on the far side but obviously could not get to me since the bridge had collapsed.
Cool... I think the Prima guide says to place an IED on the bridge, but I never tried it. Usually I come from the other side and always have a bad time killing those mercs. Mostly because I always try to go stealth with the MP5 and always get spotted on the first kill :(
Will try your way next time.
I'm about to finish my 2nd playthrough and still there is lots to try in FC2... oh I love this game ;D ;D ;D
Wow, never saw that happen, interesting.
Yeah, just when you think you've seen it all - I've been using the silent MP5 lately and have been practicing stealth. New load out is MP5, flare gun, dart rifle. For this particular mission, I stopped by the armory and switched to IEDs, but retained the MP5 and dart. I'll tell you what though, the last 3 times I've done the Goka Falls mission, I've approached from the west, and that area is easy to master from that side - snipe with your dart to get most of them, then sneak in, or just try to sneak in without alerting anyone. Did that one once, and it is a thrill trying to get in, plant the IEDs and then get out.
I was flabbergasted to see the bridge collapse - I've thrown grenades on the bridge before and they did not phase it.
never seen that either. Will have to try it. Amazing finds like these and merc wars make me stay in awe with this game.
I placed and blew up a truckload of IEDs on the bridge, stayed intact. Maybe fire does the magic :) Going to find out next time.
It might be - the bridge did not collapse when the IEDs blew - after detonation, the fire started in Kouassi's room and then spread through the entire lodge. Once the whole building was torched, a merc appeared from the north side of the building and ran toward the bridge intending to accost me - evidently his extra weight was enough to collapse the bridge, subsequent to the fire.
really, when you think you've seen it all ;D nice find, PZ :-X
Thanks Art, I was just having IED fun like I normally do at the Goka Falls, and this happened - can't wait to try it on the PC so I can capture the screen shots!
(seems like more often than not, I'm on the PS3 when a Kodak moment appears...)
Must be a moment between exitement and anger when you notice you can't take a screenie... a little annoying to have to do it again on the PC, isn't it :)
I'm carrying IEDs around lately and like that, I hope to find more unexpected things too (the merc war was one side effect of horsing around with IEDs).
So true, but I don't even have the capability to do the screenies on the PS3 :-\
I now alternate between IEDs and the flare gun - in my secondary crate just so I always have the proper fire starting gear ;)
Just for kicks, I loaded an old 27% save and did the Goka Falls mission again to see if I could easily reproduce the bridge collapse. It took a couple of tries, but was successful eventually - evidently the placement of the IEDs inside the lodge is important or at least a broad enough spread to cover all of the spots. On the successful fun, I threw 4 IEDs inside the lodge, one near the wall opposite of the ammo pile.
When detonated, it took about 20 seconds for fire to start which then spread to the western side of the outside of the building - the ammo pile cooked, and then you could see the bridge supports burning. A short while later, crrraaaack... and the bridge broke somewhere in the center and the two halves collapsed against the wall of the gorge - was cool to watch.
Now I need to get to the 27% mark on a PC game so I can take some screenies!
Just went to Goka Falls (on the PC) and have not been able to get the bridge to collapse despite placing large numbers of IEDs. There are some differences in what I experience on the PS3 vs the PC:
- I'm not on the mission to kill the faction leader - I just went to the lodge to see if I could make it w@&k.
- I did not encounter the 2 mercs at the building on the river below as I have with the PS3
- Normally on the PS3, there is only a single merc on the west side of the gorge - on the PC version there were at least 6
Of course, the probable cause is that I was on the mission when I did the PS3 and am not on the PC - guess that I'll need to wait until I receive the mission on the PC to test it properly.
Thanks for the advice. I believe I saw a collapsed bridge like this for less than a second in the DLC trailer, but I wasn't sure how to get it. I guess fire spreading ONTO the bridge is the key, since it seems remarkably fireproof towards molotovs...
good idea... set something alight that then consumes the bridge... :-X
this whole thing reminds me, one of our members, dke58, managed to collapse a flight of wooden stairs, see his pic
[smg id=642]
maybe there are similarities?
Edit: We now know that this flight of stairs is actually the Goka Bridge :)
While trying to sort out my glitches I found a save at Goka just before I crossed the bridge. I reran it w/o going inside the lodge. I placed IED's on the bridge close to the lodge, on the wall just to the left of the ammo pile, and on the ammo pile. Then made my way over to the glider and detonated the explosives. "objective completed", good...I couldn't see the bridge in the dark, but a couple soldiers ran up and stopped on the point. I sniped them with the dart and took the glider on a path up the river toward the safe house "mission accomplished".....
I'm glad I did the rerun. The first time I went inside to drop an IED and was spotted. In my haste to outrun the guards to the glider I fell down the cliff....didn't kill me so I detonated the IED's and made my way down river. Mission was accomplished so I didn't bother trying a do over.
I just got to the 27% point on the PC and did the Goka lodge mission - did a save just before I started trouble and have tried at least 10 times to get the bridge to collapse, each time without success. Wanted to get a cool screenie of the collapse because it is quite spectacular with the flames and cracking wood. I've a 27% PS3 game in which I can regularly collapse the bridge - not sure why the discrepancy!
PZ,
Although I didn't see the bridge collapse I'm pretty sure it did since the soldiers just stopped on the point. I did a save from the glider just before I detonated. I'll go back and reposition to a better viewpoint :)
Thanks KingRat - I suspect that once you save a game it already has some presets for the nearest mission to accomplish. For instance, each time I reloaded the saved game just before hitting the lodge, the merc on the west side was sitting on the ground, then when I tried unsuccessfully to blow the bridge, the same three mercs appeared on the west side of the bridge each time.
On the PS3 - I've a saved game where I start at the safe house on the way to Goka - with this save, I am able to complete the bridge collapse each time - but again, the setup is much the same - a single merc relieving himself on the west side of the bridge, the eastern side of the bridge burning, and finally collapsing. I'm now wondering if there is a difference between the PC game/PS3 version, or if you can sometimes blow the bridge and other times not.
I'm looking forward to what you discover, KingRat. :-X
I feel my fingers itching to do that one mission, but I'm busy with a couple of things right now. I'll definitely keep it in mind for my next playthrough or perhaps manage to dig up a suitable savegame (out of a stock of several hundreds.. gah!)
It would be cool to have a saved game at 27% so that everyone could experience the bridge collapse - the mercs are trapped on the other side, and it's a turkey shoot with a sniper!
Found a savegame at 27%. Thought, keep it simple, and loaded my flamethrower... done ;D

I love this game ;D Nice pics Art!
PZ,
Tried that save point and got a different reaction this time. Detonated the IED's from 3 different spots and finally had to toss a grenade through the door to get 'objective completed'...
thanks, KingRat :)
I see some people develop a certain resistance towards IEDs... no wonder, as our whole club here is recently quite busy sticking them all over the place.... but good old pinapples always do the trick ;D
Just by the way, I used a 27% game but had to do a malaria mission first, then moved straight on to Goka. I did it without any missions pending, still worked :) Goka Bridge Falls! hehe
I was playing around some more, you can set the bridge on fire from the other side too. Apparently the ropes have to burn, if you only burn the planks, it's not enough.
Then I saw this... merc falling down yet straight upright, proud ba$t@rd ;D (later he looked like a frog taking his first lessons in rafting, though)
[smg id=786 align=center width=400]
Wow, I missed your post somehow (love the merc standing at attention showing how tough he is)!
Went to Goka lodge with a flame thrower just like you see in your screen shot and it is easy to cause the collapse of the bridge when you are on the lodge side of the gorge. What I could not do so far however is cause the bridge to collapse from the other side.

Great pic. :-X
hahaha, good one Hacko! :-X
haha, good one, hacko :)
PZ, the other side, almost as this side. just torch the base of the bridge at the ledge of the cliff thoroughly :) see the flames in the last pic? thats about where the fire needs to spread to. I could do it standing in the middle of the bridge, too, but the result was... let me put it this way, I didn't find time to take a screenie ;D
I just tried this mission by blwing up the whole mountain-top with IEDs. I planted 8 or 9 of them (using th explosives pile to replenish), then made my way across the bridge and detonated.
It was a beautiful sight, but was I shocked to see three new APR guys spawn out of nowhere right before my eyes and attack me - unless they all got knocked out of the trees by the explosions.... :o

LOL!!! :-X
lol, good ones, guys...
I'll try the technique the next time I'm there with a flame thrower. In fact, I might try it with the flare gun - that weapon is amazingly good at starting fires - am going to try to detonate the gas car at the rail yard the next time I receive that mission.
Gotta try this, looks like fun. Anyone try burning the bridge while they are standing on it? Also, does it only burn after you do that mission, or can you burn it anytime? Curious minds want to know.....
I was on it and fell down, before the final mission takes you there. So yes, and yes :)
Once the bridge supports start burning, you have a few moments to get to where you want to be on the bridge (or elsewhere). I read in the Prima guide that you are supposed to be able to jump off the bridge safely into the water, so a fall from the burning bridge should do the trick as well (if it is true).
it is. It was the first playthrough when I launched myself off of that bridge and swam like hell to get away :)
haha, the first and only time I launched myself off that bridge I hit the rocks and died - I'll tell you what, the only mercs I managed to kill that time were those that died from laughter... ;D
can't help but chuckle... ;D
you kiddin'? I can't help but laugh! ;D
Thanks for the info, I think I did jump off the bridge once just to get back down to the river fast where my boat was waiting. Now I'll have to go there and see if I can get it to burn & collapse.
later.........
Used the flamethrower and burned the bridge, with a merc on it, and it didn't take long before the bridge gave out and the merc dropped to his death in the river. Funny how you can jump off that bridge, land in the river and swim away unharmed but a merc dies instantly.....
:) Sometimes they do try very hard to impress us, don't they ;D

None of the merc's can swim, they sink to the bottom faster than a rock. ;D The merc's must not have been paying attention in swim class. ;D
The mercs are delicate, rather fragile little princes...
... yet one of their favourite hobbies is headbutting bullets.
haha, good one - they do look they are trying to head butt something when they run stooped over the way that they do.

Funny stuff happened yesterday. I was scanning the GP at NE Bowa, the one by the lake. Mercs didn't know I was there so I could watch their natural behaviour. One of them was by the lake, slowly walking... walking... walking into the lake to sink and never be seen again..... huahuahuahuahahuafhehufasçrohg... what an AD moment ;D ;D
Evidently he had seen the James Bond movie (name escapes me) where Bond rescues the woman that walks out to the sea. The merc must have been shocked as no one came to his rescue.
One thing I wonder is how many other things in FC2 have not yet been discovered (things like the Goka bridge collapse).
With each feature that is discovered, you begin to look for patterns in the environment - for instance, if other "special" features like the bridge are in the game, what might these features do under the proper circumstances?

Anyway, he saved me one dart ;D
I actually walked there to thank him, but he was immersed into something else (argh... sorry, lousy joke, but I couldn't resist... :P )

I had something similar happen to me awhile ago.
I was checking out a GP across the river from me, sniped one of the mercs with the dart rifle, causing the rest of the mercs to start searching for me. One of the mercs started heading for the river banks looking. As he got close to the edge of the riverbank, he failed to notice the overhang he was standing on, and promtly walked off the overhang, straight into the river. He sank like a stone and never surfaced. I was laughing hard after that one. :-X
[smg id=1497 align=center width=400]
just burnt down the police station bridge :)
Excellent - I thought the two bridges were similar enough so that both should collapse - good find! :-X
cheers :)
Only I never knew how RedRaven managed to collapse a flight of stairs back then. Red, if you read this, remember that? How you did that?
[smg id=642 align=center width=400]
Cool new avatar :-X
teehee :) cheers
What set of stairs is that?
Red, do you remember? Those stairs? I had hoped for an answer as I'd like to do it myself :)
I'm drawing a total blank with those stairs Art. Do you have any idea where they are located?
No. The only stairs I know that look somewhat like that are in Leboa, Private Property. But for some reasons, Mr Red doesn't answer our calls :)
RedRaven, heeeeeelp! ;D
At the moment I'm struggling to remember where that pic was taken ::) .
If it is the Goka Falls bridge, then I have a very dim and distant recollection of it being done by an IED or three ;D . (but don't quote me on that !, will try and get clarification on it)
- not that it helps much, but its Andre with a Dragunov SVD :)
you originally tried to post that pic there: omg RUN (http://openworldgames.org/owg/forums/index.php?topic=189.msg6856#msg6856)
The "problem" is, you called that screenshot "stairway" -- that's what made me think those were stairs. But reading on in that link above, you refer to Goka, apparently... so it's a misunderstanding, most likely, and it IS the bridge :)
found one more topic: "stairway to heaven (http://openworldgames.org/owg/forums/index.php?topic=587.msg6857#msg6857)" where you used it.
I believe I know how you did that, Red. :) See this:
[smg id=1873 align=center width=400]
That looks like the one, it was night time when I did it, hence the dark picture. Nice one Art :-X
So what was the sequence of events that caused the bridge to snap back onto the shoulder of the crevasse like that instead of falling down into it? Did you do something special t get that effect or was it just a weird bit of game physics?
Also, cool new avatar Art. :-X
An IED set in the middle of the bridge, maybe?
It involved at least 2 IED's, pretty sure was trying to stop guys coming over the bridge, not realising it was destructable terrain, but cant recall exactly what I did as was under heavy fire at the time. Think was unintentional, just happened to pause for a second to take the image then back to ducking bullets ;D
;D :-X
Ah, thanks for the reply RedRaven. Your comment reminded me of a poster one of my bosses from long ago had hanging in his office.
"When you are up to your a$$ in alligators, it's sometimes difficult to remember that your original objective was to drain the swamp."
thanks for the comment on the avatar, something I created playing around with irfanView :)
Thanks for the comment on the screenshot :)
It is simple, and indeed "a weird bit of game physics" -- first I torched the bridge (by the way, never managed to blow it up with IEDs, as far as I know one end of the bridge "needs" fire to collapse, if the ropes catch alight) which cracked and fell down as expected. Then I saved the game because I wanted to experiment with the mercs (merc war) and everytime I reloaded, the game created yet another form of weird bridge sculpture :)

I was just thinking, IEDs can cause fire (if you blow them up in dry grass, a fire will spread) so maybe that happened there in the right spot :)
Either that or a fire somehow started in the lodge which then started the collapse of the bridge, and as the ropes broke, the IEDs simultaneously detonated which threw the planking up into the air. :-X
You guys are quite amazing...
Once I tried to set the bridge on fire with a molotov but never been successfull :(
Else, I'm always in the middle of a nasty firefight and killing everyone around is always the objective, so everytime I try to collapse that damn bridge its no funny at all!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D
My favorite way to collapse the bridge is always using this method - approaching from the river, go up the hill to kill the merc near the bridge. Watch for the patrol pattern and then when able, sneak across the bridge and into the building - Kouassi or Gakumba will be standing there like a statue (talk about dumb mercs), allowing me to place several IEDs on the walls of the outer room - then sneak out and across the bridge again. You can even stand in the doorway and throw a couple into the room with the leader. Don't go in too far or else he begins shooting and the hornets descend.
If luck is with me, no one will notice and I can kill the faction leader while simultaneously starting the fire that burns the ropes on the lodge side of the gorge.
very stylish and effective ;D :-X
The last time I ran that mission I took out the guard near the ammo pile, dropped 3 IED's on the bridge (ends & center) then more IED's on the outside wall near ammo pile. Snuck over to the glider and set'em off. When I got the mission ack message I jumped on the glider and went downriver to the safe house (I'd already climbed for the diamond case on my way in) ;D
;D
When I started this playthrough I went through Leboa systematically collecting all diamonds, so that mission was my second visit to Goka Falls, time to sneak away and go on towards Bowa :)

Gakumba met his end in the Goka Falls lodge last night, as did many of his acquaintances (he doesn't have any friends). He was very upset when I tossed a couple of IEDs into his room, and plastered 4 more on his walls. He and his colleagues kept firing at me for some reason as I left via the suspension bridge.
As I touched off the IED packs, several angry men attacked me from behind - unfortunately I'd not taken them out when I was at the river, and they evidently came up to investigate the party sounds.
I love to use the hang glider to get away, but I never left any mercs alive.. killing my way up, around, and halfway down, then, in peace and quiet, glide away. :)

Peace and the relatively quiet sounds of nature are two of my favorite things to experience when not giving nor receiving lead. ;)
As I recall, the last time I did the Goka Falls mission I got whacked at the end of the bridge opposite the lodge and Flora had to come and rescue me (I was on Infamous). But it worked out OK - while I dealt with the mercs swarming around the lodge after topping Gakumba, Flora was covering my back against the mugs that come up the footpath from the rear. She then proceeded to help out with the mercs at the other end of the bridge. Between us we made short w@&k of them all, especially when I managed to give five of them their comeuppances all at once with a round from my M-79, which I'd found still lying conveniently near end of the bridge where I'd dropped it. One of these characters took a spectacular dive over the fence and went sailing down into the gorge. Pity he was no longer alive enough to get a buzz out of it >:D
Apart from the time spent being dragged to safety by Flora, I think it was the quickest I've ever gotten through that scrap :-X
Incidentally, those guys that come up behind seem to be some kind of a random spawn. I've still had them hassle me from behind even after I've taken out the guys at the river, but not always. Never been able to figure out the story there...

^+-+ ^+-+ ^+-+
What I do is to get rid of them all: First drive up to the shack down at the water (a few guys there), that may attract mercs from the other side of the river, they come downhill, kill them if they show. Then I go back and use the other way around to get to the mansion from the back side, kill everyone on my way up. Then I blow the mansion and kill everyone who spawns there, and then finish the story by killing those who come running from the other side of the gore towards the mansion using the bridge. Like that, I usually don't see anyone else any more (no one left who was late for the party) :)
