A couple of strange things happened:

I'd heard of stories where your buddies turn on you mid-game like that.  Hilarious. I'd have been in shock.

Your river story remind me of my very first drive to Mike's in the North, it was at night and I was scared as hell someone was going to jump out at me.  I drove down the path and, you guessed it, right off the pier.  How embarrassing.  What a cool mercenary I was!

Good one spaceboy - I guess that no one better give either of us a real gun!  I too heard others mention buddies turning on them - I was so shocked that I didn't even get off a single shot in return.

Reading other FC2 forums I noticed lots of guys with that problem of buddies attacking you. I have the same problem, if I'm rescued by a buddy, he or she start firing at me as soon as the area is clear!
I thought it was a PC issue, but apparently I was wrong. I also read that it can be fxed by re-installing the game, which you guys can't!
I haven't tried re-installing the game, instead, I'm doing their missions to get my reputation upgrades and shooting them afterwards. I'm on the northern map yet, so I don't know how it's gonna be the final mission on the north, where you are to help your "friends" at Mike's or the church. I'm also curious to see how it's gonna be in the Heart of Darkness if I get to kill them all.
Anyway, as I know what they are up to in the end, so I feel no remorse

Good point jrderntl,
What I can do is delete all the FC2 files from the PS3 drive and that might get me back to square one.  On another note - I tried playing through the last game intending to kill all my buddies in the north.  I managed to kill 4 of the 6 - my intent was to see if that would reduce the number of buddies at the Landing Zone, which it did - I think that there were only 2 buddies there to try to do me in.  Here's the irony: if you are a loyal merc, saving your buddies all along, then you are rewarded by larger numbers of foes at the LZ.  On the other hand, be a stinking low-life "I care nothing about anyone" kind of merc, and you have a cake-walk out of the LZ.  Like you jrderntl, I now feel no remorse...

OK, so how do you kill your buddies? I've only ever seen two outside of Mike's, my main buddy who gives me subverted missions, and my rescue buddy. If I kill my main buddy, does one of the others take their place and give subverted missions? If I kill my rescue buddy, does one of the others step up? You can't shoot them in Mike's since that's a no kill zone and you have no weapons.

Thinking on it now, I've never gotten a mission from my rescue buddy anyway. As it is, I hardly ever need him, since I usually save game a lot and try to be very careful about my attacks and not get into a situation where I die. Maybe less than 5 times have I needed a rescue, and that's because I wasn't patient and went in all Rambo like.

If I recall correctly, I shoot them at the end of a subverted mission, or if they are wounded, I pull out the pistol instead of the syrette.  Just had a thought - when running to the rescue point in the subverted mission, join the AI in shooting at your buddy.

I believe when your main buddy dies, the second buddy steps up to the plate and one of the buddies at Mike's becomes the second buddy.  On an aside, one of the reasons to change your character in new games is that it lets your original character become a buddy, complete with the 2 buddy side quests.

Someone back on fc2world had the idea to start a brush fire and jump in thus getting your rescue-buddy to come and save you...so you could smoke him/her off.  Definitely one of your buddies will step up to be your rescue buddy. So far I've seen that it will be someone that you've already completed their buddy missions, if there is one available, so that is nice.

I have killed a buddy during a subverted fire fight, accidentally, and afterward it said he was mercy killed.

Post by: JRD on March 16, 2009, 09:46:38 AM
I also kill my buddies at the end of the subverted missions or "help" other mercs to finish him / her off. Wait till they are downed and use your pistol is also a theatrical way of finishing them, and quite satisfacting in fact.
Ultimately, you can start a fire and jump into it, wait till your energy bar is depleted and wait for rescue. Not a brave move, but it works.
And yes to your question, If I kill a buddy, the next one step into it, either to become my best buddy or to be rescue ready. You only actually see them as a best buddy when you accept a mission from a faction, they will re-arrange their roles to call you on the cell phone.

Man, it is great to see the expertise on this site - each of us has something different to offer, and even though this site is of our own creation, I have yet to discover another FC2 site where there is more overall experience and valuable advice (with the exception of the now defunct farcry2world).  Keep it up and we'll have one of the best sites available - great job guys...

The more I play FC2, the more I realize how much there is still to learn...

This bit of info could also fit under the AD thread, but it relates more to buddy rescue:  I fell off a cliff and was pretty badly hurt and when Nasreen came to save me she started running around shooting and telling me there are still 2 out there.  I told her I only fell but she wouldn't listen.  I felt stupid enough to fall and now I had to help fight off imaginary enemies?  Well I left her and went on my way only to find out she died!  Anyways, another way to get a buddy to come out so you can kill them is to fall off a cliff.

I've had that happen before - found one of the golden AKs after searching for a while.  I was so excited i jumped down to it, not realizing that it was too far for mere bones and flesh to withstand.  After a second of @#%#$@, a buddy fortunately came to rescue me of my stupidity!

A bit of an odd thing happened to me today. I'd completed a gun dealer mission, which initself was odd, as whilst i was preparing a bit of an ambush for the convoy, I notiuced it had stopped moving, not that far away. When there the target cargo truck was broken down and abandoned. ! grenade, and the mission was done. :D

Anywho, after that, I trudged over to the nearest cell tower, and picked up an assasination job, and went to the nearest gun shop to pick up the silenced Makarov i'd just unlocked. There in the gun shop was the dealer waiting to give me another mission. :o I thought he never was seen while you were involved in an ongoing mission.

Oh well, i'm off to the airfield to find my target of "off-action".  :D

Post by: PZ on March 16, 2009, 03:10:04 PM
That is quite interesting - I have encountered the same thing on several plays through - always the same convoy mission.  I believe that they are scripted to break down in that location, and it seems like it happens after a few circuits around their patrol, however, I don't know for sure.  All I can say is that it happened more than once.

As to the weapons dealer, he is visible in the shop when he has a mission for you (regardless of whether or not you are already on a mission), but if you take it, you should be prompted with the message that if you continue, the existing mission will be lost.

Re: The convoy. Yeah i did take quite a while to get there, as i was on foot, took a np, unlocked a couple of safehouses, and tracked down a golden AK, something i had never bothered to use before, but I thought, WTH, let's mix it up a bit this time.

Oh BTW, I found the AK fairly quickly, thx to your map. 8)

Cheers for that!

Thanks for the info on the buddies, next time around, I won't be so careful about keeping them alive after I've done their side missions. I guess on this play around, I'll have a bunch to contend with at the end of the game since they are all still alive.

On another point, anyone remember how many buddies you find in the south? I've already got Nasreen, who I met in the clinic after the boatload of guns mission, and the guy who drove the boat, Frank I think. Then I found Andre locked in a building at the brewery, so is there anyplace else to unlock buddies in the south? I know there are plenty more.

hmmm.... I recall finding one on the second floor of the Dogon Sediko.  Easy to sneak in via the back door and climb the post to the second floor to find the locked with the buddy behind.

Hi everyone,

I'm new here just recently found this wonderful forum. I have a question but before that let me share my experience with this game, since I start playing it I don't play my other games anymore been playing FC2 for a month now I'm still in the North tell u people me & my son LOVEEE this game. I was in the corner going inside that road leading to the Port & saw this Merc running on my left down I had him on my scoop all of a sudden I didn't shot him yet he just died without any reason looks like something bite him. Is there any snake in FC2???

My question:   How do u delete profile I'm using PS3?

Welcome Hakim, always great to hear people enjoying FC2, I got the game on 1st day of release and played it nearly every day for 3 months straight.

No snakes or other predators are present in game. The guy probably tripped and bumped his head.  The AI really react with the environment and you'll see many things that make you laugh.  Some of our experiences are posted here.

I'm also on PS3, I 'm not sure I understand your question.  What do you mean by delete profile?

I've never seen a snake, but the bots can do weird things sometimes and just die for no reason, consider it a chance to save some ammo :-)

I typically breathe a sigh of relief when one (or more) of the AI die without me having to do anything!

Welcome Hakim!
I don't think you need do anything with your profile - it seems to be fine.

Sorry I think I did not make my self clear. What I'm trying to say is (in the game) after u completed a mission you will be ask to save it as new or to the previous one, my son has created multiple names, I just want to maintain two. Right now there is two Paul & three Marty. Please bear with me as I am not familiar with the terms.

Nice people and forum.......

Title: Re: Strange day... once funny and once perplexing...
Post by: spaceboy on March 20, 2009, 06:20:28 AM
Hakim,

If you and your son are both playing the game, on PS3 the best way to handle it is that you both have your own PS3 profile (the far left on XMB menu) - all games and DLC is available for all profiles.  Then in the game saves it will only have "your own" saves to choose from.  If you are both working on the same PS3 profile then your game saves will all be mixed up together (that's ok, but then you have to be careful to choose the one you want rather than hitting "continue")  All game saves you don't want (ie. the extra Paul and extra Martys) can just be overwritten or deleted from the menu.  You don't really have a profile in game, just game saves with whatever character you chose.

Please note:  make sure whatever you do that you have multiple saves for your current game (I keep at least 5 in rotation so I can go back if I need to) and also it is a great idea to keep certain ones along the way (I do every 10% or so, or in an area I really like).  This allows to go back and explore areas or re-do missions with different weapons/tactics, or just blow stuff up for fun!

I hope that helps.

Spaceboy,

Thanks for the great idea. Especially the rotation thing. Will tell the son to create his own profile so that I can just over written the extra names.

Nice people & forum.....

How can you kill your buddies!? Mine was mortally injured so i drove off to get some syrretes and when I came back he was gone. After that I actually cried. :'(
Title: Re: Strange day... once funny and once perplexing...
Post by: spaceboy on April 14, 2009, 09:31:38 PM
Hi Smith Lords, the only real reason to kill at least one of them is to unlock the 6th buddy in the north.  See other thread on this here (http://openworldgames.org/owg/forums/index.php?topic=121.0 (http://openworldgames.org/owg/forums/index.php?topic=121.0)).  Although there have been instances where the buddies turn on you for no reason and start shooting.

But yeah, first time through I did everything in my power to save a buddy.
Title: Re: Strange day... once funny and once perplexing...
Post by: JRD on April 15, 2009, 05:01:23 AM
Nice one Smith Lords, go for syrettes and come back!
As spaceboy said, the only reason to kill at least one buddy is to have another one at Mike's in Leboa, who will give you two buddy missions.
Other than that, you just kill them if you want to.
One important thing, after your buddy get mortally injured 2 or 3 times there will be nothing to do. He / she will die no matter how many syrettes you give him / her!
I think devs made it like that so you could see a buddy die eventually!!

Post by: DKM2 on April 15, 2009, 07:19:10 AM
The mercy killing thing was a nasty addition by the Devs.

The best way to get it done I've found is to complete the two best buddy missions
and then have a few accidental discharges at the end of a subverted main mission.
Friendly fire can happen to anyone, and for some reason if its Josip, or that cocky Warren guy, I don't feel to bad about it.
Title: Re: Strange day... once funny and once perplexing...
Post by: spaceboy on April 15, 2009, 07:38:09 AM
I agree DKM2, it is kind of twisted they put it in there.  To make it even more twisted, on the PS3 there is a "Trohpy" system where all the games give you trophies for completing certain aspects or doing certain things.  Far Cry 2 has the "Good Night Sweet Prince" trophy for mercy killing a buddy.  Nothing like doing the deed with a tear in your eye...then "pling" you've received a trophy.  :-\

There were some great trophies that made me laugh on BF Bad company though.

I too was like you in my first few plays through - managed to save all my buddies, and that made me feel really good.  I couldn't imagine doing the mercy killing thing.

Hey spaceboy, I notice that you're now a Freelancer...

When  was in he north, about to do my last mission before go south, I accidentaly jumped in front an assault truck and let them pierce me. I managed to throw a grenade right on time, so when I fell to the ground, they went into pieces. I wanted to meet Paul one last time to say hallo with my 6P9... couldn't leave the north and let him live ;)

I originally posted this regarding Buddies on the GF forum, but after reading this thread, well, I guess I will be a little more complacent about helping them out in the future, going to be showing them alot of "mercy" from now on :)

My first WTF moment is just kinda annoying, its the only time I ever got annoyed with this game.

My first buddy was Paul Ferenc, eventually I did a subverted mission for him, where I had to come and help him, so I headed to the rendevous point and there was a fire fight in progress.

So I see theres not to many enemies, so I turn on Rambo Mode (tm), barrel into the place in an assault truck, crushing anything that moves, underneath its wheels, hop onto the trucks rear gun and do a spray and pray, then I get the "Mission Accomplished", "Save and Continue" message.

Awhile later I rescue this girl Flora (green top with a red star on it) and do a few missions with her and see my reputation going up, so checked my journal to see how this works, I was happy to see I had a rep of 10 with her, then I looked at Paul and saw a line drawn through his name (Mercy Killing), I was really annoyed the game didn't mention this at the time so I could have restarted the mission.

The reason for all that though is a later mission for Flora in the scrapyard, she gets wounded badly after I arrive, I pump three syrettes into her, but to no avail, she passed away quietly, I gently closed her eyes, so she could sleep the eternal sleep and got the "Goodnight sweet prince" achievement..

My point is, I reloaded the last save, just so I could prevent her death..... yes, I was willing to sacrifice 40 points, to save a game character.

I'm like WTF did I just do???????

Then later I see that I still have the 40 points! RESULT! : )

Awesome game though : )

good story.  xionyong got in the way of some bullets of mine too once and I didn't know it.

Another time I used the flamethrower  on a truck with some mercs nearby shooting at Warren - only to have it explode which knocked out Warren too.  The blue smoke was coming right in the middle of the huge grass fire I had started and I couldn't get to him.  It was painful to watch and hear him call for help...  I reloaded and came up with a better plan.  :-\

I just experienced what PZ mentioned in the OP, but with a twist.

At first, it was helping Quarbani Singh after eliminating the Police Chief.  I raced back to help him, and spotted the blue smoke after clearing the area.  I headed over to him and grabbed him to help him, but it didn't even give me the option of giving him syrettes – just to mercy kill him or abandon him.  I had my full stash of 3 syrettes at the time, and Quarbani had never been injured before.

So then Paul Ferenc and Flora Guillen flip-flopped being my primary buddy and rescue buddy (both had about the same number of reputation points).  I headed over to help Flora just south of Mokuba after blowing up the supplies.  Same thing – no option to heal her (with all my syrettes and first time injured), I could only mercy kill her.  So I continued from last save – this time, she started shooting at me as I approached!  Well, seeing as I hadn't even met Michele yet, this got me upset enough to run her down in my jeep (women!).  That left Paul - he rescued me after falling off some rocks (impatient me), so he turned around and shotgun blasted me into next week!  I suppose that my stupidity deserved some sort of commentary, but geez.... :-[

Did anyone ever figure out why this is happening?
Title: Re: Strange day... once funny and once perplexing...
Post by: retiredgord on June 08, 2009, 07:01:24 AM
I must say that I haven't as yet had a buddy start unloading at me.  With this thought in mind, and the fact that 3 buddies from the north have been "abandoned", I'm left with ever increasing numbers to deal with later.
I'm in the South and Have Nasreen, the NICE, Marty the Mouth and Xianyong, X-man as my "Best".  Well Mr. X, you foul-mouthed me once to often so when I went to the Airfield after doing ALL his dirty w@&k for him, I found he had finished the gunfight he was in.  I checked around and there were no mortars, snipers or other annoying mercs about...so I darted him not once but twice as he was cleaning his weapon.  No I wasn't playing nice, but he deserved it, as you will read in a later article.  But now...X MARKS THE SPOT.   HAHAHA

I don't recall seeing a solution, nor a reason for buddies suddenly turning on you.  In my game, I just kept going, knowing ahead of time that when a buddy came to rescue me, I had to be sure to gun them down before they did me in.

I had that same problem... buddies shooting at me after recue  :P during my 2nd playthrough

Can't remember if you are a PC or PS3 guy Foghorn Leghorn, if on PC, uninstall and re-install fixed the problem.

Apparently, it's a well known bug, at least I read lots of posts on that subject at ubi.com.

Maybe the new patch fixes it for good

I'm a PS3 guy, JRD - my laptop is almost 4 years old so it can barely handle Farcry 1.   :'(

I'm hoping this sorts itself out as I rescue more buddies.  Though it might make for a nice easy pass-through near the end.... ;)

Consider just trying old saves or start a new game and perhaps do a reinstall as a last resort.  The buddy shooting my character happened to me only once, and I don't recall what I did to fix it, but I just went past it and everything ended up fine.

I experienced the problem on the PS3

Playing on PC gives you the quick save option, which makes buddy rescue quite unnecessary.
I don't mind shooting my buddies, usually I don't allow me to be rescued  ;D.
Actually, I reinstalled my FC2 copy for other reasons, but it also fixed the buddy shooting issue  ;)
Finnaly, you can download one of the may saves dke58 posted in he download area or, as a last resource, tell us who are you playing as, percentage of game completed etc and we can try to arrange a save game for you, maybe it fixes the problem
Good luck and let us know how it goes for you.

I'm noticing more glitches on the PC version than I did on the 360.

For example, last night I went to the cell tower just east of Outpost, got a mission to the port. On my way to the NE bus I released a buddy from Seidko and the 'mission accomplished' pops up? Didn't give it much thought and caught the bus. Getting off the bus the 'escape your attackers' message pops up? WTH? I'm already outside the boundry, take a step and 'you made it', check map and no target shows?

Ok, back on bus to same tower, get popup that says accepting will cancel previous mission, What mission? So I accept and get the same target which I finally complete :)

All the Jack tapes in Bowa give the same recording about the 18 year old kid with the shotgun. I got all 9 in Leboa, and 4 or 5 in Bowa but only have credit for 10 total?

There were more, but I don't want to bore you guys...Oh heck, as long as I'm on..........Ambush at unlocked safe house. I'm sure it's happened to all, but I liked this one. Before meeting Reuben at the lumber yard I was going around diamond mining. In the east sector around the Villa and OGC the last one is on the border just south of the safe house. So, I'm coming up the river and see a jeep, appears to be parked. I stealth my way up, and there it sits in the road with no driver around. Hmmm, I check the area, and head over to the safe house to find the driver standing by the front door ready to ambush me :D

I think that when you free a buddy from a place without being asked to do so it also counts as a mission. I just set Xanyong free cos I missed a rescue ready buddy and got the "mission accomplished" message. Since you were on a assassination mission, it canceled it when the message poped up, thus, you had to come back and get the target again.
In that case, I don't think its a glitch, only superimposed missions.

As for getting into Pala or Port Selao and being shot at sight, happened to me once, with no apparent reason... thats a glitch imo. Being ambushed in a safe house too!!

pretty sure it was ArtBlade who posted about playing about with the mercs in cease-fire areas, and how they back off if you aim a weapon at them. So there am i walking round Pala pushing guards back, and generally being a bully, when i've had enough set of toward bus stop, aim at a merc to make him move out my way, He curses me, raises his own gun (Homeland - 37) then

BANG
Fires point-blank hitting chest and face !!!
Reload !!!
straight to bus stop this time and got him in back of neck with SVD before escaping on a bus.  ;D

Odd thing this morning - was on a mission to kill Seth Uniya for Nasreen and everything progressed normally.  Mission accomplished and my history with Nasreen increased.  On the way back to Port Selao, I received a phone call from Nasreen: "I'm surrounded, please come and help... no wait... don't.." [click]

Odd phone call, I thought, so when I checked my stats, Nasreen was no longer my best buddy, but was not dead - presumed missing I suppose.  Never had this one happen before.

Another strange morning of play:

Was working on the flood the mine mission and was at the GP across the gorge from the pipeline.  There were two mercs (as always), the sniper and a guard.  Sneaking in with the 6P9 ready, I hit the guard in the head while he was standing on the roofed platform above the platform where the GL is located.  Imagine my surprise when I fired the single shot perfectly to the merc's head and heard the snapping crack of wood.  The entire roof collapsed onto the poor guy leaving only the partial support posts standing.  Sounded exactly like the Goka bridge collapse, except that this was a building.  This was a first for me.

I've collapsed the roof of things before, but not with a single pistol shot, usually takes a grenade. Unless you hit the secret "sweet spot" lol.

I've been reading all the posts about buddies turning on you. This finally happened to me at the Oasis, when I went to tag the gold. I was down the hole and heard the shooting start, so came back up ready to do my bit, only to have Flora open up on me along with the rest of the dirtbags! At first I thought I was just in her line of fire so I scooted to one side, but no, she was definitely gunning for me (while the mercs were gunning for both of us - silly girl). So what else could I do, I gave her her comeuppance. One less to bother me at the LZ later!
I'm no wiser as anyone else as to why this happens.
Also saw something I haven't seen before. Later on at Mokuba I got badly mauled and needed rescuing. Paul showed up to rescue me, and off we hobbled. I blacked out for a sec, when I could see again, a merc had gotten too close and instead of shooting him, Paul was bashing him up - one thump to the stomach, then a smack across the skull! Excellent!
This game is just full of surprises.

Yeah, I don't believe anyone has come up with a good explanation of why that happens other than a glitch in the AI of the buddy system.  I recall the few times this happened to me - my rescue buddies would drag me to safety only to open up on me - shocked the heck out of me the first time it happened.  Reloaded my last save, and it happened again!  Another reload, and I was ready for him this time - gunned him down as soon as I has healed myself.  Fortunately they are not so tough as at the LZ.

That's a great story on Paul - I've not seen that one before  :-X

Luckily, never happened to me so far, but I have no idea what might cause that behaviour.

Something strange happened to me. Funny for those who like Frank, perhaps. Well.. I did kill every buddy as soon as possible, not taking on any side mission. Had to spare Michele in Pala, who just did not volunteer either for a best nor rescue buddy job, so I could not kill her.

In Bowa I killed them almost as quickly but decided to "keep" one best buddy for some of the alternate main missions (they are just so great I didn't want to miss them) and wanted to finish him off when I didn't need him any more. For some reason Frank never volunteered for any of those buddy-jobs either.

Endgame. Bloody hell, I couldn't kill the current best buddy in prison! The cell is cease-fire and mysteriously strips you of your weapons, and from the prison yard you can shoot but not kill him through the grid on the floor. I saw blood spurt out of my buddy but he didn't care (hard-boiled bastards as they are hehe).

Now, I was left with Frank, Michele and I guess Hakim? I forgot <chortle>. That Frank-git never showed up but at Mike's! He was on my list, spent his days drinking and that's that. Believe me, he did NOT show up at the landing zone! I had Michele and Hakim and spent like 15 minutes looking for Frank. When I left the LZ, the screen did tilt for an instant (repeatable, tested it) but then I could trudge on to meet Mr Armsdealer.

When the game was moments away from finishing, I checked my buddy list. Frank the sole survivor... Strange, and funny, too. Alcohol preserves him well, apparently.  :)

I've got a new "strange" one.

There's an arms truck that I've been asked to remove - it's doing it's circle not far from The Outpost.  All of a sudden the circle stops, so I'm thinking "uh-oh....car trouble or something".  So I walk over slowly, wanting to pop it from afar (I'm Andre, and armed with an AS-50, Eagle 50, and Carl rocket launcher - figured I'd try a long distance thing with this one).  I get to the scene and look around with my scope - EVERYONE'S DEAD!!!  I counted 5 dead bodies and nobody standing (I thought for a second that I was in multi-player and one of you guys cleared them out!).

So then I remember PZ talking about being able to drive the truck, and decide "what the hell".  I haven't used a bullet or thrown anything yet....I have an idea.  I get in and drive the truck back to the gun shop in the NE.  The guy in the shop looked at me with a "what the $%^& do you want me to do with it???" look, so it hit me - let the guard sentry with the GL make this such that I don't have to lift a finger.  I park the truck in the middle of the road and wait.  The sentry arrives and I position myself and goad them until they finally fire and...."mission accomplished"!

I'm sitting there beaming, when all of a sudden it gets dark....and either the sentry truck or the arms truck (couldn't tell as it happened so fast) lands on my head after being airborne in the explosion, and Nasreen has to rescue me.  I'm not sure, but I think I saw her roll her eyes and utter "Men!"....   :-[

Great story Foghorn Leghorn,

Fascinating "moment" this morning - was traveling through the cock fight arena toward Pala intending to start a merc war, which happened according to plan.  The mercs in the GP were successful in overcoming the arena mercs and noticed me - started to give chase in a white Datsun. He caught me just as I was entering the no shooting zone and exited his car, which was right on the border.  Here's the interesting part - as he exited the passenger side (which was in the no shooting zone), he immediately became non-threatening.  While he pointed his shotgun occasionally, he never pulled the trigger.  Intrigued, I went up to him, but he said nothing.  He eventually trudged toward town and blended in with the town mercs.  He never did say anything, even though I kept nudging him.

It was funny watching a merc trudging down the road in a peaceful way.

This is not really funny, nor perplexing, but an interesting experience none the less.  I went into the APR headquarters and listened to Kousassi's proposal - however, I did not want to take the mission, so I left.  After a few other missions and just plain goofing around, I returned to find the door open (no doorman), and Kouassi's second offering me the folder (Kouassi was gone).  I took the job and left through the open door - I was able to freely move into and out of the room.

You have a good point - in all the prior times I'd played the game, I can recall only a single instance where I had to load a prior save because I could not get past a point.  In my case, it was Nasreen standing on the deck of the barge instead of in the pilot house.

It will remain to be seen if something bad happens as a consequence of my current action!
