haha, Art I did a similar trick with the mission to deliver the truck to Sefapane to help Nasreen blow up the garage (maybe it's not always Nasreen I guess).

Anyways, I was so turned about on how to get into the garage area that I attempted a sharp turn and ground the damn thing on the concrete base of a road sign.  Could not move it.  Stupid is exactly how I felt  :-[

We still love you  ;D Nice story  :-X

By the way, this topic isn't limited to stupid moments we had ourselves, if you know some stupid or silly merc moments... go on, post away  :)

I like this one, don't ask what happened, I just kept the pic for some time now, hoping to find a topic for it. Found it ;)

that one should've been one of the "caption contests".  For this one I'd say "Damn those doors are hard to open!"

lol, good one!

As an aside, I often use another vehicle to knock my favorite vehicle back into proper position after I've managed to get it stuck.  For instance, I was in a GL AT I stole from some mercs and was visiting Sediko when I became hopelessly stuck in a ditch.  To solve the problem I went to Sediko and took the buggy, then rammed my GL truck until it became un-stuck.

Well I rolled up on this odd scene the other day in my Datsun (in the background of the top pic). I found the mercs a little ways away up the road. I still can't figure out how they did this. LOL ;D

It must have spawned above the bridge and fell through. Like I said, I found the Merc's up the road before I rolled up on the bridge. They were in a spot that Merc's don't usually patrol, but by themselves, like they were confused. ;D
Title: Re: Argh, stupid! (lol)
Post by: PZ on August 24, 2009, 05:59:50 PM
lol, those mercs are mostly confused - if I had a nickel for every time I've seen them run into explosive barrels, or off a cliff or some such foolish errand, I'd be rich!  ;D

The merc in the pic (between rock and his AT) is about to be pushing up the daisies. After a long long chase from a GP at a bridge north of Scrap Salvage and West of Slaughter House to Pala, starting several merc wars on the way, he managed to drive off a cliff. Amazig how long he pursuited me, just to end like that... well, the real end was his truck blowing up into his face LOL

Hehehe, this was today's goal: Merc Wars around Cock Fights. Still my favourite place, and it is known to w@&k. Never had any luck anywhere else apart from one incident at Goka Falls after killing the boss near the bridge. However, the merc in the pic above was SO close to entering Pala (across the river, bridge is to the left) it was a shame, really. "Argh, stupid!"  ;D

Here's a "d'oh!" moment:

[smg id=1342]

This was me trying to move a Datsun so I could get the discarded grenade that had rolled under it. "No prob", thought I, "I'll just jump in and back it up. Not too far, there's a steep drop back there. OK, easy does it... Yeah, that should... hmm, maybe just a tad more... uh-oh... oh, sh-"
I managed to jump out, but ended up on a ledge where I don't think I was really meant to be and unable to move from, not even to jump down and join the car, so I ended up having to reload the game to get out. Bloody grenade...

Post by: PZ on August 31, 2009, 09:56:49 PM
lol, that's a good one fragger - i recall a couple of mercs in the same position as you - was driving toward an underground house when an ATP cam on me head on - they turned after i blasted past them and backed off a cliff - you should have seen how angry they were!

hehe, I picture this:

"... just a tad more, uh-oh, oh shiiiiiiiiiiiiii......" tumbling down the cliff, landing next to the Datsun, vision blurred. Then a first glimpse up to the edge from where you hear a dangling sound, then the grenade comes rolling over the edge, bouncing down towards the Datsun and fragger, now eyes wide, going "this isn't going to... yes, it is" BANG  ;D

 :) Here's another one:

[smg id=1374]

Can I park, or what?
Actually, this was the result of driving recklessly through the bush whilst under the influence. I should know better than to drink and drive, especially off-road!

This is curious:

[smg id=1375]

Came across this interesting tableau at Sefapane. Dunno what happened here, but notice that he's on the rail bridge, not the road bridge right next to it. Not only that, but the rail bridge is blocked at the town end, so God knows why he was here and who he was fighting with!

I could fill this thread to overflowing with pics like those.
Never fails "I'll just go this way and avoid the guard posts, and get to that destination real quick"...vrrrrooom, crnk, crrrrng, rrrr, rrrr, rrrr, "damnit!"

Or right off some cliff edge, did a six turn tumble of a rock with a buggy today, finishing on all four wheels. Wish that was some kind of skill I could master.

You know for the buggy at least, you should be able to push it off of things like you do the boats. Or wire the hang-glider to it. Yeah that would be cool!

Its difficult to keep those darned animals out of your way in many areas, for instance on the short road from the northwest bus stop to the armory in Bowa, and headed north through the pass from the southwest bus stop in Bowa.

hehe, yes... I think some are scripted that way so they do run into you - the windmill shop somewhere near Goka Falls, and the way up to the safehouse where the prince is, there are always zebras trying to headbutt my AT. Just now I was slowed down somewhere near North Rail Yard and Petro Sahel, and the bump I noticed but didn't pay attention to earlier was the cause... I have been dragging a zebra with me for like half a mile, peeled it off my car by running over a small rock :))

Something rare to find out there... and no, it's not my car. I believe the driver got arrested (no dead body to be found nearby) for unnecessary swerving or at least for parking disorderly.

 ;D

Good giggles galore! A few of these really had me laughing, probably because they brought back memories of some of my less than effective moments.

Sorry, I don't have any screen caps or clips simply because I've never really had any one to show them to and haven't needed to learn until now. I don't have a good picture but I'll try to keep it under the thousand word equivalent.

A favorite moment in my last play through was when I was asked to kill the artemisia(?sp the dried herb for malaria medicine) driver so my buddy could go through his papers while I smashed the kilns at the Dogon Village.

My standard approach for this operation is I've found a spot fairly close up on the hillside where I can first pop the sniper in the guard tower and then hit the driver without entering the encampment. Hornets nest stirred I hop up on a rock right there and address each merc as they filter out to confront me with the AS50.

This time the AT that covers that route showed up and I quickly tagged his gunner from a good distance off. The driver kicking it into turbo came busting in, running over 2 inattentive mercs positioning to rush me, cut hard to the right and came straight up the hill bumping into the rock I had been crouching on while he switched to the AT's gunner position.

Seeing what was coming in a split second before impact I shifted to the right, dropped off the rock to be below the level of the AT's 50 cal mounted gun and the driver seeing my move immediately exited out the back to come after me.

I rushed to the side of the truck to line up my shot which put me in a prime position to see the now slowly moving but gaining speed AT rolling backwards over him accompanied by his screams which went through the spectrum from surprise to cursing frustration and concluded with agony.

I think the remaining mercs at the post blamed me for the whole thing because they emptied out into plain sight to come after me, making it an easy mop up as not a single run rabbit (my personal nickname for hiding or fleeing NPCs) remained as I topped off my supplies.

that's a great story!  To me it's stuff like that that epitomizes our enjoyment with FC2 - funny, uncalculable stuff just happens.  You couldn't make that happen again if you tried probably.  It's so random, like real life.  Good stuff  :-X

;D That's funny stuff, mandru! Incidents like those you describe are what keep me coming back to this game. Those, and the freedom of action, the environmental effects, the choices of weaponry, the scope for innovation... I could go on...
Great story, mate, keep 'em coming! :-X

... and I just love it when the mercs kill each other either through incompetence or by accident.  There is a GP north of the southeast bus stop at shich I often see a dead merc lying in the street, the victim of a roving ATP.

I still remember the first time I saw a merc shoot one of his buddies and say words to the effect: "Sorry man..."

And yeah, PZ, it's always funny to hear a nearby voice going "hey hey HEY!" or "don't shoot me!" as well as your pick "sorry, man" :)

great stories guys!
can't tell you how many times i've done the long walk of shame myself after firmly planting the nose of a vehicle in the dirt, usually after running off of a "temporarily invisible" cliff in the dark while trying to duck the patrols.  Why is it that it always seems to happen as soon as I find an AT with a grenade launcher >:(

On the subject of mercspeak, I like the guy who, when the shooting starts, runs around saying stuff like, "I don't want to die! I want to go home! Should never have gotten on the f***ing plane, should never have come here", and so on. Hilarious!

I think if I could make a wish list for additional content additional dialog for the mercs would be at the top of my list and I still encounter snippets of conversations I've not heard in their entirety.

I'm pretty happy with the weapons and vehicles we start out available to us and have never purchased the additional pack. I just haven't had the need. Though I have long loved Unimogs. Who wouldn't fall for a flatbed that you could strap a Hummer onto and take that Hummer places it could never get to on its own.  ;)

Though I've tried all the weapons I always drift back to my standard snipe set up. Dragonuv in the north and AS50 in the south maps, Dart rifle and the grenade launcher in the secondary and play the end game with a spare dart rifle, the primary 4 shot grenade launcher and a Uzi in the weapon cases at that final safe house for a last second swap right before I hit the combined merc's camp and the LZ on my way to meet back up with the Jackal.

Yeah, the mercs definitely make the game w@&k for me.

I purchased the DLC for the weapons initially, but as it turns out, the vehicles are what makes it valuable to me.  Although I use the silent shotgun and crossbow during the initial phase in the game when you don't have anything silent, I go back to my typical 6P9, dart, MP5 as soon as they are available.  At first I really enjoyed the thrill of the ATV ride where you can jump regularly, but have come to enjoy the Uni more with it's diesel roar and mounted .50 (I play a game with the GP mercs using that .50).

One nice thing about the ATV though is it's ability to fit into extremely tight spaces.  A fun exercise is to plaster it with IEDs and dive it past the barricades to park it in front of the APR or UFLL headquarters, whichever you dislike the most during that play through.

Because of the handgun in the foreground I keep flashing back to the M.A.S.H. episode where Frank Burns showing off drives the tank over Col. Potter's command jeep. Nice!! Never thought to try that one before!

Mandru, I too am often amazed by the depth of the conversations you can overhear in this game.  This one time I jumped a GP at night and I really got the drop on these guys, took most of them out before they even knew what hit them.  Anyway this is late in the game, so my rep is at like 4.  I am creeping down along the edge of this building when suddenly this is what I hear:
Merc 1:  He's out there motherf!#$%r! He's out there and he's lookin' for you man, he's lookin for you!
Merc 2:  Shut up man!!! Just shut up!!!

At that rep level I like the panic in their voice and lines, when they go like "where is everybody? One, two, three, all dead." "I wanna go home!!!" "Please don't let me die like this"  and so on :)

I would so love to wander back into Port Selao or Sephapane with the level 5 Rep you get during the endgame just to see the cockroaches scurry.  ;D

Unfortunately I've tried breaking off in the South, going back up North to Pala at level 4 Rep to see if there was additional dialog from the mercs and was disappointed.

Shot while assembling my sizable honor guard to proceed me, dumped into a meat wagon, hauled out into the desert as dead during an all out sand storm for disposal, then I stagger out of the desert by now looking like walking death and kill the remaining leader's victory rally, literally, for an encore.

And I get no street cred for it? Sheesh! Tough crowd.

The best I can get out of them is a petulant "Yeah! What?" I guess once they've killed ya they figure they can do it again if they need to. Talk about no respect.  :-\

Yeah the town chatter is great to eavesdrop on too.  During the same playthrough I was talking about earlier, I was walking around Sefepane and overheard two mercs talking about me.  They were saying something to the effect of "between the factions and this psycho merc running around, it's a wonder we haven't all lost it ..."
They gave me my props, so I let those two live, at least that day . . . ;)

OK, I've got a merc's buddy interaction at a point of me pushing conflict.

I was rep level 4 in Port Selao on the main East-West street, I accidentally wandered too close to the Northwest faction red zone and the first merc challenged me saying "Where the hell you think you're going?"

The second merc stepped up and quickly as if he recognized me interjected "What he meant to say was this is a restricted area please!"

I wasn't ready to hash it out right then but will have to try sometime to push that situation to see if it can be milked for more.

I like to pick a guy at random and start a shoving match.  You just keep bumping in to the same guy until the shooting starts.  It works better if you can find a guy walking down an alley by himself though cause after about the second bump a crowd usually starts to gather

haha, that's funny. First gather people and then a record attempt on how many you can take down before they punch out your lights :)

That's great - I hadn't heard that before.  Another reason why I love the AI in FC2 - it's really dynamically appropriate.

I've done this too - only normally in town.  I like bumping into them and then they shove me - I only wish I could shove back instead of just running into them.

Then you'd best be careful when you pick up that diamond on the balcony in Port Selao and drop down to the sidewalk or you may suddenly have your hands full of an angrier merc than you care to handle.  :P

My latest stupid lesson learned.

I've been using GL-ATs a lot more recently in fact I just made my "first" trip starting from Mike's at the marina and making driving the full circumference of the lake encouraged by some of the strategies and tips I've found posted here at OWG.

Starting out West I first hit the old gas station CP then the pump house(smashed the CP, grabbed the diamond) and skipped the pipeline for later. I unlocked the safe house there at that nearby cell tower and cleared the next CP at the "T" in the road before detouring up into the loop around the diamond mine just far enough to grab both diamonds at the Northern side of that ring road.

Then back down to the road to the high sniper's post overlooking the pipe line to grab that diamond and tape. Then down the hill and smashed that CP by the lake shore again to make the left to go North into Selao.

Following on around the lake there at the last CP between me and mike's I stopped with my back wheels on the train tracks to give the AT's nose just a bit of angle down and shelled anything that moved and I was on the home stretch and easily cleared the last At patrol and the two Datsun dummies and was safe.

Needless to say that I was feeling pretty cocky about not only making my first circumnavigation of the lake but I had managed to keep my GL-AT intact for the trip with just the occasional bit of touch up service.

I guess to celebrate when I left Mike's after that I stopped up the hill and laid in wait for the first DD to come along sitting cross legged on top of the gun turret clutching my MGL 140. Really wanting to enjoy it I waited until I could see the whites of his eyes before delivering the lightening. Oops! :-[

I'd gotten so used to blasting close range with the GL-AT and taking a bit of singe damage I'd forgotten that you have to part of the truck, either in the driver's seat or "in" the turret to keep the truck from blowing up due to close proximity from a blast like I'd just metered out.

I usually try to avoid accepting rescue from a buddy and will reset and replay a segment instead but my most recent save would have set me back about a half hour's worth of game play and put me clear back to grabbing the diamonds at the diamond mine.  :-\

Oh well I thought, as Andre fished me out of the fire and hauled me off to a safe distance, it's good to resharpen those rudimentary skills from time to time. Little things like proper equipment usage and remembering to save regularly.

I'll bet that was quite the shocker - I recall not too long ago taking the stupidity of the mercs for granted on the west side of Bowa (where there are several walking thugs near a GP).  I had the misfortune to encounter an ATP just when I arrived next to the GP - halted my truck and mercs from north and south overwhelmed my position.  Shocked the heck out of me when they did me in.  Needless to say, my embarrassment must have been evident to anyone watching.  :-[

nice story there, mandru, I see you found a new way of enjoyment doing things you haven't done for a while, if at all. What you and PZ told us, about a surprising defeat, especially if self-inflicted hehe, is well known to many of us.

I find myself buried under my own burning GL-AT from time to time after dishing out grenades without thinking... as in too close a blast radius from vehicles I took out or by simply confusing my silent MP5 with an M-79 handheld grenade launcher, a deafening blow and a shock to me when trying to shoot my engine so I could make it "battle-ready" :)

(that is if you fear the next bump in the road might turn your engine into a steaming kettle, you shoot it with bullets, rather than grenades, so it does start to steam, then repair it, so the engine is at full health before you drive into a combat zone. See funny tactics and tips for further information).

Heh heh PZ and Art, those are good ones. To save my accuracy percentage I use the machete to jimmy my AT's warranty but fully understand the mix up.

Earlier someone recounted forgetting how pretty big trucks fly when they go boom and experienced a total eclipse and had a second to reflect on "How could that be?", to which I can totally relate. ::)

And I do use my M-79 on an AT while standing on its hood just to call up a buddy to give them their discharge.  ;)

I guess we all have those moments which explains why this is the 73rd post on this thread and I'll bet nowhere near the last.

By the way when your buddy rescues you and there are enemies nearby, they give you their favorite secondary weapon which never happens to be my particular favorite.

If you go back to where you got dropped you can often find your original weapon and grab it back. It will be considered a used weapon from then on and crud up much more quickly but even a gimpy used weapon you prefer because it rounds out your battle kit beats a weapon you'll probably never use. Just remember to swap it as soon as you get a chance.

Get thee to an armory!

Post by: Art Blade on October 01, 2009, 03:21:42 PM
hehe :) What I do quite successfully is, on passing out, change to machete. They won't take that and replace it... if you're lucky, you'll wake up and still have your fave secondary ;) Or, try to pass out near a landmark. Better to find your dropped lead spitter there later on.  :)

After being rescued, I too normally go back to find my weapon, which is usually the 6P9 - one time I searched for quite a while only to ultimately realize that it was under an overturned AT!

If I'm not mistaken, that looks like the interchange just east of the un-named guard post on the eastern side of Mosate Selao (along side the railroad tracks) - the armory near here is where I routinely pick up a Uni and head further east toward the GP with the water tower.  I enjoy parking the Uni on the hilltop overlooking the area and suppressing them with the .50

Funny thing is that I often experience what you did if I'm using one of the Jeeps from the GP (or Mosate Selao) or an AT, but the Uni navigates that tight corner with ease.  Very surprising considering it's large size.

I was driving a buggy and inadvertently hooked one of the smallest (rigid as a lamp post) trees between the rear left wheel and the body of the buggy by turning towards it too soon before I was clear of it. There was the loud bang of hitting an obstruction but instead of coming to a stop the scenery started shooting by in an weird fashion.

I'd stop and the spinning would stop but when I'd try to go again it was enough to give me vertigo. I had to get out of the buggy to figure out what had happened.

I was laughing my guts out and my wife who unfortunately suffers from motion sickness looked over at my 24 inch wide screen and almost puked from the erratic scenery flying past the wrong way on my monitor because I had the throttle kicked wide open was enjoying taking a quick spin.

Oh well, anymore she's learned that when I'm deep into FC2 she looks at my screen at her own risk and I've learned that if I want to show her a cool waterfall or sunset I'd better have the view preframed and change it very slowly when she's looking.

poor wife... an ex-girlfriend of mine suffered from motion sickness too, and she had quite a hard time when inadvertently watching me playing "need for speed." Funny thing, it only affected her when watching a screen, she didn't mind a real rollercoaster :)

I was playing around a bit in Shwasana, night time. Everything business as usual, counting the mercs I sniped off or silently killed with my 6P9 (used that one again after a while and man, that pistol is accurate). I thought that if I didn't skip one, I missed one merc. So I went around on tiptoe around each house, inside, next house, inside... after a couple of minutes I didn't expect anyone to be alive any more, but I was about to complete that task of scouting every building.

In the house where the lone sniper resides, when he's alive that is, I was on the upper floor and just got inside. The room was dark, no one insi.... and I jumped up and nearly kicked my chair over: One silly merc, the last man standing, figured out how to climb a crate of sorts, so he was looking down at me when he opened fire. He gave me such a start! After I took the first couple of bullets with my jaws on the floor, I returned fire aimlessly and in sheer panic, but managed to off that guy. Incredible. I have no idea how he got up that fish trap or even that sideboard, probably a faulty spawn or whatever went wrong. I couldn't believe a game I know quite well managed to put me close to a cardiac arrest  ;D

Art that story is so funny because I've had the daylights startled out of me more times than I can count.

Just a few play throughs back I had an in game buzzing mosquito get right up inside my ear.

Without thinking about it I swatted at it and slapped my headphones right off and onto the floor. The embarrassing part of it was explaining to my wife who was sitting next to me, working at our long desk-for-two, what had happened.

lol, I think that we can all relate a similar story!  As a rule, I rise each morning typically several hours earlier than my wife.  Consequently, I fire up the PS3 while in bed (it's mounted on the wall so I have perfect line-of-sight with it  ;D ).  Ever so quietly, not to disturb her, I start in the game (I even set a morning light to automatically come on so that the TV screen flashes don't cause her to wake up) - man, I have it all rigged.  Unless of course, I round a corner and come face to face with an angry merc that I was not expecting - I think that you can probably imagine the outcome  ;D

Pala, town mercs on war against me (I provoked it). I ran for cover and ended up in that garage with the AT there burning (blew it up shortly before).

The merc outside, between garage and the building, covering on the ground of that path there, lobbed in a hand grenade the same moment I lobbed a grenade through the same window at him. While I could back up out through the garage entrance, he had no real escape route, so the funny moment was when I had left my spot and turned around (ready to go back in), I watched him the moment he came flying through the window into the garage smacking his head on the wrecked AT. "Argh, stupid" LOL I had to bail out because I couldn't think straight any more, laughing ;D ;D ;D

The nearest thing I've had to that was when I hurled a grenade in the direction of a merc hiding in dense bush. I couldn't see him but I knew he was there. He flew up out of the shrubbery right towards me and landed at my feet. Couldn't stop laughing ;D

Now at reputation level 4, I get all kinds of funny lines. In Pala, I was staring down one merc...

merc#1: You're creeping me out a little, friend! I'm just gonna move along, yah?

...when another one came by, and now both teamed up:

merc#2: Weren't we meant to be somewhere?
merc#1: Yeah, we should probably go.

then I bumped into the second merc and he went,

merc#2: pardon, my fault, I'm sure, man! and the next time he said sorry, my fault.

when I was hiding in a building (garage, again) I heard the mercs outside go

"he's in there! Get him out!"
"what do we do? what do we do? "
"toss a grenade in!"
"that won't stop him!"

lol  ;D ;D

This is a new one on me. I was under the impression that mercs' weapons never jammed - but they do! A bad guy opened up on me from pretty close range, so I ducked down behind a rock. A second later I heard a noise like, "chika-chika-chika-chika..." I popped up to see the merc frantically trying to unjam his G3-KA4. A few seconds later, it wasn't a problem for him any more ;D

Not really an "Argh, stupid!" story, but I thought I'd stick it here instead of starting a new topic for it.

You guys have probably seen a merc weapon jam, but it was yet another cool FC2 surprise for me :)

Oh I've seen mercs guns jam a couple of times.  :-X

On one ocasion I was ice cold... swaped my PKM for my machete and slowly walked towards him as he was screaming "Oh no, not now, not now, c'mon, c'm.... " SLASH.......  ;D ;D ;D ;D

On another one I just pulled a shotgun and separated his body from his troubled mind!!

They don't jam as often as when you are holding them though!

In my head I keep replaying:

Quote from: Art Blade on December 19, 2009, 09:37:57 AM

"he's in there! Get him out!"
"what do we do? what do we do? "
"toss a grenade in!"
"that won't stop him!"

It reminds me so much of the scene from Blazing Saddles where Mongo is sent into Rock Ridge to kill sheriff Bart but starts off by punching a horse and knocking it out and then tearing the bar up.

A plea for help reaches Bart and he agrees but when Bart starts to strap on his guns Gene Wilder's character (Waco Kid?) stops him saying:

"No, no! Don't do that!  Don't do that, if you shoot him you'll just make him mad."

I guess it's a good thing that they don't make them like that any more.  ;D

So I'm sat there, walking round, memories flooding back of previous treks through the landscape, decided to grab a hang glider and enjoy a scenic flight.
Guess what the first thing I did was the moment my feet left the ground ? ? ?

nice one.  ;D

Instantly reminds me of my stupidity when I had exchanged my silent 6P9 with an M-79 handheld grenade launcher, and then trying to shoot my banged-up car's engine a little so white smoke emerges so I could repair it, to make it "battle ready" (you know, better whack your engine on purpose and immediately repair it than to meet mercs and watch your engine steam away and die after bumping over the first innocent pebble in the road). However, I visualised shooting it with my silent mp5, which is about the same size as that M-79, and imagine my surprise when I blew up my car right into my face... the 5.1 speakers bobbing around on my desk and my ears ringing with the blast...  :D

note to self: bloody check weapons!

Heard a Merc say "Thank Christ, he's leaving." as I was walking out of Pala with a Level 4 Reputation.  ;D

Got shot up INSIDE the armory the other day. The truck mounted 50 cal was penetrating the walls. I think the Mercs were really mad at me.

Also had to bail out of the armory recently as a fire I had started blowing up a pursuing truck caught  spread to the building. Made it out just as all the ammo inside went off. Was quite a spectacle.

I got so annoyed after being pinned down by mortar fire near the pump house, I jumped in the water, swam to the island and slashed him with my machete before he could process what was happening.

I really hate those mortar guys.

I agree, eor123, those mortar guys are a major pain. Glad you taught him an etiquette lesson ;D

I found a trap the other day. I took the hang glider from just south of the Crash Site, near the safe house, to get the diamond case on the ledge to the WNW. Got the goods and decided which would be the best way to jump back down. I walked to the north end of the ledge against the cliff face, where I came to a narrow cleft with a rock in it below me. I thought it looked like a good, safe way to get back down so down I dropped - and got hopelessly stuck there! I tried jumping, crouching, and dropping grenades to try and blow myself back out, all to no avail. In the end I had to load up a previous save as there was just no way to get out of that cleft :D

So watch out for that one!

funny stories, eor123 :) I had set a bush on fire behind an armoury once and that set off the ammo inside, too. Actually, the back of those armouries is quite thin and not exactly fire-resistant, about anything that emits flames will penetrate that "wall" and eventually set off the ammo crates.

And that mortar guy, I too hated him (and slash him a couple of times just like you did) but there is a solution how to safely take him out (see my journals, "a different approach" and its discussion topic for pics).

Fragger, funny story about your cleft  ;D I'm glad I haven't found it so far  ;D

This time AD (artificial dumbness) saved my life. And I bet those mercs who had once manned that Grenade Launcher Assault Truck would still be slapping their foreheads, uttering "argh! stupid, stupid, stupid!" had they survived that little mishap:

I had just taken out an arms dealer convoy which came through Post Office, though I had taken it out a bit away from there. Then I wanted to somehow pass PO in my unarmoured buggy when I heard engine sound -- the GLAT patrolling the area! I was coming from the east, so I had a hill between me and PO, and the engine sound was coming from somewhere behind the hill. I then heard that sharp CLACK! of the GL, immediately followed by a rather big explosion. All I had seen was a silhouette of part of the GLAT, looming up from behind that hilltop, when flames burst out into the sky and car parts flew around. I dared take a look on foot, and this is what I saw:

[smg id=1879 align=center width=400]

Those idiots had seen me but instead of hitting me, they must have either hit the hill or a tree close to them, a tree more likely, and the splash damage of their own grenade took them both out. And their GLAT. LOL

That kind of AD saved me a few times too.
A few times a GLAT fired a grenade into a rock or tree, saving my @ss... and it happened while I was really short on health or syerttes.
But one constant sample of that behavior can be seen at the Ranger Station: there is a RPG merc in the middle of it and if you approach from north, after taking care of the DD/AT around there you can see it happening. That particular merc gets really happy to see you there and end up blowing himself up!  ;D ;D

You can see an article featuring him here (http://openworldgames.org/owg/forums/index.php?action=articles;sa=view;article=16)

I've just seen something so stupid it made me laugh out loud: Leboa, the guard post in the NE you need to pass to get to the windmill shop when coming from the fort (the same GP fragger and KingRat like to climb a nearby rock for better view). Well, everyone was already dead when the Jeep patrol arrives. The merc gets out, decides he could get closer to me by car and gets back in, tries to perform a crisp and clean 10-point-turn (expression coined by RedRaven) and ends up ramming something really bad, probably a yellow or a red barrel. It sets off, blows the Jeep up which does a few flips, the merc's voice without any panic in it, "AAAAaaaah-HAAaaaaah!" and lands on all four if slightly charred wheels. Excellent show. The only merc who could have caused me some troubles vouluntarily becomes extinct ;D

I think I just had a double "Argh, stupid" moment  :)

I was asked by Paul to go to Petrosahel and steal the shipping documents. My load out was silent 6P9, dragunov and the machinegun. Since I didn´t have a dartrifle I decided to take out the sniper with the 6P9, after sneaking up the stairs on the cistern I gave him an extra "eye" in the back of his neck. This is where things got a little crazy, as I turn around towards the buildings I see one of the mercs doing his "I belive I can fly" imitation i.e rising into the air and the dropping to the ground  ;D. While silently kicking myself in the butt for not hitting the screenshot button I proceed to take out the other mercs by hitting the barrels and gas canisters. In the midst of all the "Aaaargh"s I hear the "Vroom vroom" of the jeepmerc patroling the area. He comes barreling round the office building at full speed and runs straight into the yellow barrels by the parked truck, the resulting fireball was beautiful to see. So in one five minute period I got to see of the things reported in this thread  :-X. I wonder if I can claim that as a kind of record  ;).

Discovered a new trick.

I have started playing chicken with the oncoming vehicles. On the occasions when I am being chased, I sometimes can cause the two Merc vehicles to crash head-on into each other, resulting in quite a bit of chaos -- especially if I stop and toss a grenade into the wreckage.

Usually good for an "Oh sh!$!" from the Mercs.  ;D

I've noticed on Hardcore and Infamous, they pursue you much more aggressively and further, often encroaching into another's patrol area. I love it when I have two chasing me as I crash into a Guard Post.

The ensuing chaos is epic.

I ambushed a convoy near a guard post last night and had an additional AT and car roll into the firefight.

When it was over there were seven burning vehicles, including my own jeep. Merc bodies were everywhere. It was awesome. I just wanted to walk around and enjoy the spectacle but had to run for cover as it was at that glitchy GP near Sepoko where the guys shoot you from inside the rock and seem immune to gunfire. I almost got taken out by a sniper inside the damn rock!

Man, I love this game.  :-X

Title: Re: Argh, stupid! (lol)
Post by: eor123 on March 17, 2010, 04:03:01 PM
At those difficulty levels, you won't be blowing though GP's unscathed very often. It only takes couple of shots to cause the vehicles to start smoking and slow down. The repair upgrades which seemed useless before, become very important as they cut repair time in half.

Infamous is a trip. I'm glad I did it but it was incredibly difficult. It requires a whole new mind and weapons set, IMO.

I did A LOT of walking and creeping in Infamous..it was the only way I could stay alive. Two or three hits from a AT mounted 50 cal or a sniper will kill you. You have to stay behind cover. Long range weapons are a must. You'll need to thin the ranks before you move into an area...and even then, several Mercs will leave the area, charge,  and attempt to flank you. They don't just stand around or bunch up waiting to be killed anymore.

You keep backing up trying to find cover and they just keep coming. It seems like vehicles will chase you all the way across the map if you don't knock them out or they don't crash out.

The area around the brewery and the pipeline is absolute Hell. The mortar guy on the island and the boats with grenade launchers will open up on you if they see a hint that you are there.

I took refuge in the big building at the brewery one time and actually heard a Merc get on his handheld radio and order the mortar guy to "Target the main building!"

Go for it. Keep you buddies alive. You'll really need them.  ;D

SBD's mate, SBD's... ;D

eor is spot on in his comments concerning playing on Infamous. I played through on that once, and man, what a challenge! It was like a different game altogether. As eor mentioned, I found myself walking a lot instead of driving, as the patrolling mercs will clobber you but good if they catch you on the road. And to paraphrase RedRaven, your sniper rifle is your best friend. It really does require you to think and plan, take your time and think things through before you open up. Very tough.

Incidentally, eor, I've never heard a merc order the mortar guy to target the main building. Nice bit of eavesdropping, mate :-X

I stopped the AT to retrieve a diamond not far from Sepoko. The briefcase is close to a Guard Post and a merc on foot often patrols within sight of it.

I took the merc out with a dart rifle hit and retrieved the diamonds. I kept hearing what I thought was a door slamming or something metallic being hit. I thought other mercs were advancing on me and searched for them.

When I got back to the AT, I saw the last of three zebras run into my stationary AT and fall dead.

I would say that is an example of natural selection but they will respawn. No wonder there are so few animals in FC2.  ;D

Picture a fat bug crawling around on your windshield. Remember what your windshield looks like when you drive like "pedal to the metal" on a highway/motorway? Those bugs would produce smears double in size when they smack into the windshield. I think it would take an awful lot of effort to gain enough speed and then actually manage to hit a zebra so it splatters all across your car. Everything considered, I think it's alright animals just drop dead touching your car in FC2  ;D

That night two elderly women were driving home from a bingo tournament and passed below the highway overpass from which Lorena Bobbitt was discarding her husband's penis.

The penis struck the windshield of the car, obviously startling the women. The passenger exclaimed, " My God, Agnes! Did you see the d#%k on that bug?"

I left a swamp boat on the river's edge near the Chemical Products Company while I retrieved the formula for Paul Ferenc. Just as I returned I saw the second of two gazelles commit suicide by walking into the swamp boat.

I guess the poor animals are just traumatized by all the shooting.

I've just come to realize that in the second half of the game I've always been so anxious to get out to the barge escort mission I've never stopped in Selao to listen to the random conversations that are available between the mercs before the cease fire is shattered by the delivery of all those weapons.   ???

I'd jumped off the barge and was hurrying to get to the doctor to warn him things were about to break loose.  I caught the edge of something unintelligible that sounded like inter-faction bickering, one merc screaming something at another and it wasn't until after I'd talked to the doctor that I realized that merc interaction was something I'd not encountered before.  Of course the point at which that had sunk in was well after I'd cleared my save points to get back there easily.   :D

I simply keep running into things that I have to earmark "I'll have to check that out later".

So next time through I'll have to use a no detection cheat, get to a rooftop and spend some time watching to see if there's anything else that will play out I've been missing with the pre-ceasefire Selao merc's.

I'm quite sure that I have some. That's not the problem. The problem is: how on earth do I recognise which save game is suitable without having to load and play like a couple thousand saves?  ????

Mandru (anyone), what is the game progress percentage at that point so I might be able to go by that?
Title: Re: Argh, stupid! (lol)
Post by: PZ on March 30, 2011, 12:44:22 PM
Isn't it around 50% that you start in Bowa?  I may check saved games that I have because I too would like to experience what mandru found.

EDIT: It is actually before 50%.  I just uploaded a PC save at 31%, and the player is standing in front of the door to the Pala Church.  Go in and you can initiate the sequence to go to the southern map.  Get the save (http://openworldgames.org/owg/forums/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=151) in our downloads section.
Title: Re: Argh, stupid! (lol)

I've found one game save where I'd just completed the barge mission and was at the port headed for the doctor's office.  The save was listed as 2nd Act and either 46% but be aware this is the same percentage after you report to the doctor and have escaped the town after the ceasefire is broken.

On finding this save I delayed going to the Doc and climbed up the ladder on the central building and leaped across to the other building to the west of it and made three different reloads listening for new merc chatter at around 25 minutes per attempt.

I wasn't able to catch the wild screaming I described above again but I did catch new dialog about a lanced boil on someone's knee that spewed out hundreds of maggots and what it disgustingly looked like (ugh), and at another point there was a loud exchange that started out promising but when I put a scope on them to watch the interaction between the two mercs the audio track cut off leaving the two of them standing about two feet apart wildly gesturing (some of it quite threateningly) in a parody of a mime argument.

There's a scientific principal that states that any time you try to observe or measure something you are changing it so that you can never make a perfect observation or measurement.  I think I'm butting heads with that precept trying to catch the event I'm searching for.   :D

... but I did catch new dialog about a lanced boil on someone's knee that spewed out hundreds of maggots and what it disgustingly looked like (ugh), and at another point there was a loud exchange that started out promising but when I put a scope on them to watch the interaction between the two mercs the audio track cut off leaving the two of them standing about two feet apart wildly gesturing (some of it quite threateningly) in a parody of a mime argument.

wow  ????  that's not an exchange that I've witnessed - just goes to show that there is always something new to find in FC2  :-X

the maggot/knee part isn't new, you can hear it quite often.

Quote from: Art Blade on July 30, 2009, 03:52:09 PM
there - just heard it in Port Selao:

"...it was big like a grapefruit. And?" "I was there when the doctor lanced it. Maggots, hundreds of maggots. It spilled down his knee, looked like a macaroni dinner."

LOL

Actually, the quotation marks are misplaced.. it should read:

- "...it was big like a grapefruit."
- "And?"
- "I was there when the doctor lanced it. Maggots, hundreds of maggots. It spilled down his knee, looked like a macaroni dinner."

I've seen him eat scorpions and insects of all kinds, spiders, lizards, brains, rotted meat in rotted butter, bowls of maggots, and just about everything that could possibly be considered food.  He has a show called Bizarre Foods on the Travel channel here in the States.

I know Zimmern.

The Travel channel always tends to run his show at the same time my wife comes home for lunch.

I flip away from the news station I leave on for background (paying attention when something interests me) to find something more pleasant than world affairs while were eating and there's Zimmern bolting down something so disgusting flies won't lay their eggs on it while expounding on how lovely it is that little bubbles of purification are exploding at the back of his sinuses and how exquisitely it complements the texture.

Anthony Bourdain on another Travel channel show isn't as bad as Zimmern but I've become aware that it's probably best I stay put and never try traveling very far over the horizon as I would certainly starve to death preferring that to some of the stuff they enjoy eating.

Is that much worse than this?

Coffee from beans defecated by palm civets:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kopi_Luwak (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kopi_Luwak)

$100 to $600 in US dollars a pound?  Some people seriously need to have some sense slapped into them.   ???

The really sad part of this whole fad is that I am sure that the native population of palm civets are being decimated by opportunists gathering breeding pairs to start farmed coffee bean producers to cash in on the high value that has been attributed to this product.  Or would it be better to call it a by-product?  ????

There is a Vietnamese restaurant that I frequent, and have enjoyed the coffee, which is prepared in a glass immersed in a mug of hot water.  The coffee arrives still dripping from a small filtering device on top of the glass - very tasty and unusual coffee.

Then I watched a program called Luke's Vietnam, and I saw the exact setup being used - great, I thought, the local restaurant is serving authentic coffee!

Then his next comment was a description of how the coffee is obtained  ????

I've been too afraid to ash the restaurant shop owners - and probably never will because it sure is good.

Like fish sauce - made by fermenting fish in barrels in the hot sun until they are completely rotten, then pouring off the effluent and bottling it as a condiment.  The irony is that there are certain aficionados that have fish sauce tastings like some of like wine tastings.  When you think about it, wine drinkers are enjoying the metabolic waste of the microorganisms - essentially we're drinking yeast sewage.  ????

Yogurt.   ???  *shudders*

Any of that stuff gets near me and I kill it with neglect.

1975, I was in Seattle walking down the street in the university district with my first wife.  We were minding our own business when a young blonde woman stepped out of a shop doorway and asked "Have you tried this wonderful new ice cream?"

My first impression of her was that she looked like someone that should be working in a health food store which for some unknown reason is Not a compliment probably due to my impression that people engaged in the line of w%&k leave me with the impression of a grim sickly pallor of something that's not received enough sun light that you'd find on rolling over a wet log in the forest.

*(I know that's an unfair expansive generalization.  Maybe it's just me reading their "Auras" (which I also don't believe in :P ) but still they creep me out )*

I knew that Häagen-Dazs had recently opened a horribly expensive (for that day and age) shop a block or two from there so a another new ice cream store wasn't on the face of it suspicious but when I stepped closer to take one of the sample cones she was offering the smell of it rolled across to me and I recoiled.   :o

"That's Not Ice Cream!!!"

"What do you mean?" (plastic smile ramped to 11) "You've not even tasted it."

"No no, that's not ice cream.  You're trying to fool people."

Obstinately she came back with "It's just  ice cream!"

"I've worked on a dairy farm. I know the smell of fresh milk and cream.  Whatever that is smells of death and rot!"

With exasperation she broke down and admitted "It's frozen yogurt and there's nothing wrong with it."

"Yeeeah, it's so wonderful you have to lie about it to trick people into tasting it."   >:(

Realizing the blonde was about to fling the sample tray aside and come at me nails bared my wife popped in with "I like yougurt, I'll try it."

Instantly reverting to "sales mode" the blonde switched the plastic smile back on and turned to her "It's really yummy."

After the  briefest moment's evaluation my ex made me proud of her by saying "Too bad it's not quite as good as the little cups I can get in the stores, you know, with the fruit in them?  Oh well, thanks." She grabbed my elbow and towed me away from any further conflict.

I've a long held theory on the origins and perpetuation of the yogurt cult.   8-X

Before anyone starts PMing me with hate messages (  ;D )  I have over the last 10 years come to enjoy gyros which have a sauce composed of yogurt, cucumber and onion but the spicy seasoned pita it is served on is the one component that makes it possible for me to eat it.

At home (you could have knocked my wife over with a feather when I suggested it) I've even been able to adapt the yogurt on gyros to a white dipping sauce that I really like with plank fries (think monster french fries or fried potato wedges).

1 part yogurt
3 parts sour cream
an appropriate amount of white onion and of peeled seeded cucumber

Toss all in a blender and puree and serve with plank fries that have been liberally coated with a hot spicy seasoning salt.  For some reason that heat component has to be there to overcome my gag reflex.   ????

It can be used right away after blending but I really prefer the flavor when it's covered and spends a night over in the refrigerator allowing flavors to marry.

But still, come at me with a spoon of naked yogurt and I will defend myself.   ;)

Warning - don't read if you have a sensitive stomach/palate

Spoiler

Speaking of eating things alive, my son invited me to a sushi dinner during which I had a live shrimp.  The presentation was excellent - a huge prawn (the length of your hand) was on the plate with torso separated from tail.  The tail had it's shell removed, and this is what you ate raw - it was still moving when it was in your mouth, it was so fresh.  The flavor was so sweet, delicate, and tasted of the sea - it was truly an experience.

Afterward, the chef removed the plate containing the torso, and deep fried it (the torso, Art  :-()), then returned the plate containing the torso to us - you were supposed to eat the entire shrimp - antennae, eyes, head, torso, insides, etc.  I know... sounds disgusting, but it was one of the tastiest and most memorable dishes I've ever experienced.

There are normal foods like fish or the many organs from various animals liver, heart, tongue, kidneys all prepared in many different ways that many people enjoy and I'm perfectly fine with that (albeit at a distance, I just can't eat them thank you very much) but unless you are a non-yogurt eater you might never have noticed the number of people that at any given opportunity will attempt to push yogurt on you.   ????

I was only half joking when I obliquely referred to the yogurt cult (cult, culture, cultured yogurt?  ????  hmm...).

There are a lot of foods that are good for you and actually are considered to be pretty universally tasty but I can honestly say that I can't think of one of them that random strangers will try to twist your arm to get you to try and actually want to watch you as you try it.   ???

Sorry, no screenshot (happened too fast) but this is probably new:

Down at Cock-Fights, having started another merc war, I heard one of the defenders go, "we need help, launch a flare!" which a fellow merc indeed thought was a good idea. He was standing outside one of the buildings (facing that local car wreck) but unfortunately for him he was standing next to that big tree there. So when he launched that flare, it bounced right off of a branch and came hurling down, setting the place and that lunatic merc on fire. Of course he had a last word, "Uh-hurrrrrrrrgh!"  ^+-+
