Title: FC2 Members Server
Post by: DKM2 on May 24, 2009, 05:26:37 AM
I've setup a PC server for members to play online..
So far I'm just testing it, dunno if it will be fast enough.

Server Name:  Far Cry 2 Server dk         password:  rjm

I'll be on and off it, maybe with luck we'll run into each other online.

<squinting, gritting teeth> I'm comin'! I'm comin'!  :)

nothing. checked again settings, whatever comes to mind, nothing. your server asks for a password, it responds if it is incorrect, but with the correct pw it takes a while and then I receive the meassage that I couldn't join and should try later. My PC seems to lock me out :)

Changed the name to DK Far Cry 2 Server tst
and no password.

sorry, after testing everything I can think of, for me it's impossible to join (any server).  :(
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server
Post by: DKM2 on May 25, 2009, 03:35:01 PM
ya, seems strange.
only thing I can think of is turning your firewall on,
but make sure FC2 is in the exception list.
Likely is, but....
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server
Post by: Art Blade on May 25, 2009, 03:39:39 PM
tried everything. It is included in the exception list, but even shutting down the firewall doesn't change a thing. Played around with my ICMP settings, the DSL settings, everything I can think of. After failure I resetted everything back to what it was before playing around. Strange, really. And annoying, had I bought the game in the hope of a good online MP time... which wasn't my intention though. Gave it a try just to meet with you lot. Well... can't seem to solve it. Perhaps a matter of a new patch...
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server
Post by: PZ on May 26, 2009, 10:29:15 AM
Strange indeed...

DKM2 - are you considering posting a calendar of when your server will be online for scheduled games?
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server
Post by: DKM2 on May 26, 2009, 12:03:51 PM
Yeah a calendar would be good for when people usually play, I'd like to keep it up 24/7 though.
Everything is pretty much set to defaults, so I haven't customized it yet.

I have had my problems with it thou.
The router losing the IP sometimes is the worst.
Found a background process that was causing probs (protein folding), fixed that.
No one has really been on yet, except me, looks like any other game I see though,
but maybe people can't get in? don't try?  9999 ping? I see it though, so I dunno.

the sad thing is, I saw you (1/16 players).
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server

I'll plan on getting on my PC some time this afternoon (3-ish Pacific time) to see if I can see your server and log in.
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server
Post by: DKM2 on May 26, 2009, 12:27:28 PM
okay, that'd be great, about 6pm est for me or later.
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server
Post by: PZ on May 26, 2009, 12:53:15 PM
DKM2 - I just installed the calendar (check the menu bar beneath the FC2 logo) and placed a test event entry for your server test.  The events are automatically entered into a new board called "Events" as well.  Please reply if the server name is wrong or other information is necessary.

Hey, that's cool. the name is fine.
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server
Post by: PZ on May 26, 2009, 03:27:15 PM
Hey DKM2 - I see your server in the list, but when I try to connect, FC2 responds: "Cannot join match at this time. Please try again later."
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server
Post by: Art Blade on May 26, 2009, 03:29:40 PM
I get the same message, even if the server stats is "waiting" rather than "started".

was there a ping?

was there a ping? yes, 9999
join other games? yes, and yours looked the same in the listings as all other games (ping 9999)

See above - I'm at a loss if all the proper ports and protocols are open on your router...
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server
Post by: DKM2 on May 26, 2009, 04:00:56 PM
hmmmm, 9999 means no ping.
most of the games I just seen had pings, but usually I can join the 9999 ones too.

Hmmm, okay I'm gonna try another router, I got quite the collection now, stupid things.
I'll check the settings etc. can't tonight thou, maybe much later.
Another guy I've been helping get his games started on his server might give me a few hints.
Almost there!

Thanks Guys.

heh, when I saw you then, and couldn't join, I started my own server publicly (no one joined, and I walked abouts... I noticed the dart rifle is way more powerful than in SP)

DKM2 - have you tried direct connect online?  If that works, you could post your server IP address in the calendar at the time you start a session.  Then users could visit the calendar to pick up the IP.
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server
Post by: DKM2 on May 28, 2009, 09:42:10 PM
For some reason I got modem problems
One connects well but refuses to forwards ports
Which is stupid because I can play almost any FC2 game.
The other doesn't like to connect but does forward the ports.

In the mean time, there is someone who runs a very good server, very friendly
ZXRYAN, he's on most nights, look for a team match Z or ZX something server.
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server

Thanks for the update DKM2 - hope you get your modem issues worked out.  :-X
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server
Post by: DKM2 on May 29, 2009, 11:41:17 AM
Hmmm, I used telnet to dig down deep into the modem and made a few changes.
I didn't think it'd be enough to make a difference,
but after running for a hour or two today, bingo I see a few people entered the game when I wasn't there.
Never happened before, so a first!

I renamed it, "Da rock 2" or something like that.
going to leave it up and I'll try to get logged in later so they won't leave next time.
*crosses fingers*

Try it, Art - you never know, it might just w@&k for you now!
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server
Post by: PZ on May 29, 2009, 12:15:06 PM
Just got done doing a team deathmatch with DKM2 and got thoroughly spanked!  (I truly suck at MP)

Although I did not get my PS3 controller to w@&k with FC2 on the PC, I was able to finally get the Logitech one to w@&k.  The next time I'll try the controller for movement - may just give me the edge I need!

I'll tell you what though, it is great to be online with a member of the forum - we kind of know one another so it makes the MP experience all the more worthwhile - have not really liked MP much until now!  :-X
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server

Right now I'm just relived, I fiddled with so many settings,
2 modems, 3 routers, I'm not sure what even made the difference now.

Good thing is I can now start thinking about the game configuration and how the run our games.
Think, thinking....I need to get some beer first, clear the head.

Post by: SoulFallen on May 29, 2009, 01:43:37 PM
Man you guys should not ruin a good PC FPS with a controller!

Take it from me, if I had to choose between keyboard and controller for various reasons (i.e. ease of use, quickness, aiming, etc) the keyboard takes the cake!!!!!

It was awkward at first going from 360 controller to keyboard but in the end I came out with better accuracy.  Now when i try to play on the controller i fumble around like an idiot.
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server
Post by: PZ on May 29, 2009, 02:37:26 PM
DKM2 - I'm thrilled that the server is running - now we can also think about maps - maybe generate some of our own - anyone know if the "stock" SP map (or parts of it) is available for MP?  It would be cool to have the APR and UFLL camps set up on opposite sides of a map that is known to  us - give us a chance to get organized with vehicles, plan our ride, etc.

Art - really sorry to see that you still have issues connecting - perhaps we can come across something that will w@&k to get you online - difficult to imagine a FC2 MP experience without Art Blade...

SoulFallen - I agree about the aiming - I'm using a sort of hybrid setup.  Laser gaming mouse in my left hand, keyboard on the desktop, and using the left half of the Logitech controller in my left hand.  Buttons are programmed so I really don't need the keyboard.  The reason is that steering (and general movement) is much easier for me using the stick rather than WADS keys.  However, the controller aiming is pathetic compared to the mouse, so here I am.  Perhaps I'll become accustomed to the keyboard one day - who knows!

DKM2's server opens up a whole new arena for us in gaming - this could be really an exciting adventure.  I wonder if we can start servers for the PS3 and the Xbox - anyone know?

As an aside, I just finished with the cabling on the deck and pulled a Mexican beer (Dos Equis) out of the fridge - added a little sweetened lime juice and I'm in heaven.

Cheers, PZ. Strange what's going on with my machine... I never had problems to get online with other games before. Then again, I haven't played online with this machine. The only reason I can think of is a firewall, but disabling it didn't solve the issue. That means, it is most certainly not a FW issue. Let's wait and see how FUEL goes :)
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server
Post by: PZ on May 29, 2009, 02:45:14 PM
hmmm... and I assume that you're not using a router that needs to properly forward ports?  One other thing - TCP/IP settings all correct?
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server
Post by: Art Blade on May 29, 2009, 02:50:14 PM
no router.

TCP/IP could be it, but I don't know what could cause problems. To me it looks alright. Could you post (if you prefer, private message) the TCP/IP settings that you're using? I'd like to compare.
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server
Post by: DKM2 on May 29, 2009, 03:19:51 PM
As far as I know there are not any MP maps that are like the SP.

On my PC I only use the Windows firewall with FC2 as an exception
The router/modem firewall is off. Art, try that and/or find the manual for your modem.

Next challenge will be to enable punt buster, because we have to let other people in
there just won't ever be enough of us (for now) to get a proper game going at
different times of the day and night.
I am using a custom launcher, it features auto-banning for swearing
and players can be pre-assigned as admins to moderate even if I'm not around.
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server
Post by: Art Blade on May 29, 2009, 03:28:19 PM
DKM2, the FW (I use the one built in with XP) is not the issue, I switched it off already. The modem can't be the problem as it cannot be configured (a DSL modem).

Yes, I'll get on that PC and post - but it is basically plain vanilla Vista64 settings - I've not checked them out in Vista before, but it might be of benefit to getting you online.

Post by: PZ on May 31, 2009, 05:27:48 AM
Here are the tcp/ip settings that w@&k with FC2 MP - don't know if these are required, but the settings allow connection to the server.  In the properties window of the network card:

Internet protocol v6
Internet protocol v.4
Link layer topology discovery mapper i.o driver
Link layer topology discovery responder

All of the settings on the protocol are default.

Post by: Art Blade on May 31, 2009, 06:11:58 AM
I see that looks entirely different from my XP (don't even know where to see that). I was thinking of properties of the inet connection, ICMP settings, registrering DNS, NetBIOS (if at all haha) etc. There are so many settings actually, that is a little more than just "use IP v6" :) Thanks anyway... I revised my settings time and again, still, nothing new.

Post by: Art Blade on May 31, 2009, 09:24:55 AM
thank you for the detailed help there, have to check those settings. I think I don't have the LMSHost checked.

If you check XP firewall, there is an advanced tab of sorts, where you can check the ICMP settings (checkboxes). What do you use there?
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server
Post by: PZ on May 31, 2009, 09:28:01 AM
Only the Incoming echo - have you tried checking the security logs in the event viewer?
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server
Post by: Art Blade on May 31, 2009, 09:32:25 AM
I have my FW logs on, but there's nothing I can see that helps me. Logs of the event viewer... where's that? (maybe I know only the German term for that one, but surely can find it if it's part of XP)
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server
Post by: PZ on May 31, 2009, 09:40:36 AM
You might need to set the log settings in the Firewall advanced tab.

The Event viewer is found in the Administrative tools, which can be found in the control panel.

the fw log settings were already set (done that some time ago)

found the "Ereignisanzeige" (translates to event display, haha). Ah, long time no see... anything you'd do there? I mean, that is basically showing everything my machine did, does or will do, even  ;D
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server
Post by: PZ on May 31, 2009, 10:57:10 AM
Yes, it shows everything that your compute does - it shows in time order what activities were done by various Windows processes - 4 categories, I think: application, system, security, and Internet.  You could clear all events (save them before if you like) and then start FC2 MP.  When it fails, exit the game and immediately check the event viewer to see what happened.  If you see yellow or red icons, then check those - they are things that were either warnings (yellow) or something that failed (red).  This might give a lead or two as to where to start looking.

Something I didn't know, if the game is full it doesn't show on the list.
So if you don't see it, doesn't mean its not running, just check back.
people come and go, but its been mostly full all day today.

Post by: Art Blade on May 31, 2009, 01:06:16 PM
I've seen that too, on my many attempts, that your server is popular :)

Meanwhile, I cleared the event logs, started FC2, tried to connect... and quit FC2. The even logs are still empty. Maybe need to customise the event viewer's options (I just used those default values).

Yes I did; just waiting for the proper opportunity!   :-X

To clear up confusion of those reading this post - Art suggested the identity "6pz9" because the 6P9 is my favorite weapon - unfortunately the Ubi account names need to start with a letter so I had to come up with something slightly different - because I mainly use the 6P9 as my "primary" weapon, the name kind of fits.

Title: Re: FC2 Members Server

I see... is it your router that is issuing the IP, or something else that you have no control over?  How about issuing periodic "keep alive" signals?
Title: Re: FC2 Members Server
Post by: DKM2 on June 02, 2009, 09:44:12 AM
Its set it to "keep connected" but it doesn't, so I think its the ISP that does it.
Lease time expires, looks like 2 hours of inactivity.
Soooooo, I installed an auto-ping app to keep poking at it once and while to reset the timer.
That'll fix'm, I hope, will see later if stayed alive all day.
I suspect that because it was alive all weekend, but people were playing 24/7 too.

Just a little frustrating not having any feedback, because I know others with servers say
they sometimes wait an hour before they can get people in a game.
When you see a game that's 0/16 why join, nobody is there. But some people do.
I got another idea thou to try out tonight.

I just need a system to get it going every time without guessing, is it up or not.

Btw, big rumors on ubi boards about a patch real soon, with improvements to the

Its all default game setting but added D to the name to be different.
see how that goes.
I think this one may be working now.
They added some new ports.

I was just able to get on the server, no one was on though. :( It did show a ping of 140 in the server browser.

DKM2, I made your topic a sticky, hopefully it attracts more players for your servers.

You're doing a great job  :-X

not sure if this one needs a sticky, the other PC MP thread is fine. Unless you got other ideas.
I might change the title a bit though (PC MP one), and add a list of current map rotations to it later.
This one is just full of trouble shooting and growing pains.
Now that we're up and going pretty good, I even got it running behind a router and firewall now.   :-X
