Thanks Binnatics, you are a gentleman and a scholar  :-() :-X

I propose another contest - actually, a bounty of sorts - I'll put up another 100 credits of my own to the member who finally convinces Art Blade to give Portal a try!  Dead or alive gentlemen, dead or alive!  :-()

Well, how to convince Art..... let's see....

He actually should get a first hand impression to be convinced, but since he refuses to install the game....
:ideas that's it!! I'll make the impression an "inside OWG Portal experience"!!!!

Fasten your seatbelt Art, here we goooo!!!!!!!

As a good start it's necessary to get inspired a little and off course take some rest. So let's move to the introduction spot where we'll get organized.
Just click here (http://openworldgames.org/owg/forums/index.php?topic=2168.msg37860#msg37860) to start the tour!!!!

You forgot to create a portal that brings us back here.. I just did that (how's that for coop) :)

I've seen a lot here. But never so much effort to get me to do something you guys want me to do. My lines rendered silly (scooba-diving cow.. excellent retort, then) and my own efforts useles (simply by ignoring me) and then a bounty on my head (hehe, nice one). And now I've had no choice but to chase through the entire forum following a trail of cake crumbs (that, my friend, was outstanding  ??? ??? :) :) :-X :-X)

AND EVEN MAKE ME PLAY ALONG by making me add a last portal to get back to here.

So, Binnatics, another pat on the back.. AND THIS TIME I'M GOING TO HAMMER THAT KUDOS SLAP ON YOUR BACK  :-D :-D :-X

Guys.. I can't let my friends down. Thanks for all your efforts :) I'm glad to be here with you and..

I'll buy that FRICKIN' game  :)

THAT was incredible Binnatics.  Simply awesome.  ...and it even got Art to sign up as a new test subject!  great w%&k!

(I still think he should play the first game first though... but that might be too much to ask)  8-X

holy cow Binnatics - despite your efforts to evade her, GLaDOS has taken over OWG.  The PORTAL 2 banner and logo are on every page!   I like the logo - don't actually recognize that shot on the banner - perhaps it's from co-op or early concepts, or my memory is failing.

But she's definitely hijacked PZ and Art now!!!

Thanx a lot for the nice replies all of you!!!!  :-[ :-[ :-[

It was just great working it out. When the idea came, the rest followed fluidly. It's just that this forum is so damn great and varied that the rest of the 'crumbles of cake' actually came asking to be put.  ^-^ And thanx for all these kudos  :-[ :-[ :-[

By the way, GlaDOS did some nice w@&k with the childboard!!! Kudos for GlaDOS, as soon as I find out who she bribed  ;)

Oh, and Fragger, excellent idea to split and close the 'launch day' topic. It was ment temporary from the start, so it's good to move on!  :-X

If you're going to go for P2 then at least watch some video playthroughs of the first game.  It'll at least give you the background of the relationship between Chell and GLaDOS.

Or go for both P1&2... P1 is a great puzzle game but you can w@&k your way to the 13th level in about 30-45 minutes and I`m sure P1 can be found very cheap anywhere you go   ;)
Title: Re: Get Art to play Portal2 contest

if, I mean IF  the game is halfway acceptable, then  I might consider getting Portal1. So far I'm not exactly convinced P2 is going to be my new fave game, but I'll try. :)
Title: Re: Get Art to play Portal2 contest

I don`t think of Portal to be a fav game either but it`s certainly a refreshing innovation in the world of gaming. The best part is when you start to think in portals, then you can say you twisted your old fashion Newtonian physics concepts  ;)

That's definitely the great advantage, great way to put it JRD!!!! :-X

I remember the first time I had to use my falling velocity to reach a distance after going through the portals... I got dizzy and desoriented. I thought what I did was luck, and I guess that's what it was. But after a few more times I just left the dizzyness behind and enjoyed the ride ;)

In fact, I can almost 'hear' myself going through a portal now, allthough there is no sound included :)

I'm curious as to how the visuals will be on my rig, on my screen. I hear the graphics are amazing without needing a monster graphics card. Not that I was afraid it couldn't handle it, so far it has handled everything maxed out, but still.. new games with good visuals are very much appreciated. Plus, I'll be able to take screenshots, one of my favourite pastimes. :)

Thinking about shooting holes into the structure to pop through walls and all that is also something I'm probably going to like. I was never afraid of heights and never experienced vertigo, so that shouldn't be a problem either.

I'm looking forward to the voice action as in witty comments and dialogues and so on. As far as I know, they're supposed to be brilliant, so that's something I'm really looking forward to.

Alright, then :)

If nothing else Art, I'm sure you'll enjoy the humour in P2. There is a lot of funny dialogue,  in fact pretty much every line of it :-D

Just one character, who you meet quite early in the piece, has a British accent. I have to be careful what I say so as not to give anything away, but let's just say he keeps popping up during the course of the game. All the other voices are American :)

I think that's exactly why the series has done so well.  Good original concepts don't come along in gaming very often anymore, and there's not really anything out there like it, save Narbacular Drop (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narbacular_Drop), which was the spiritual predecessor of Portal and the project that many of the developers of Portal cut their teeth on.

Keep in mind the SP and MP stories are sequential, with the SP first, I don't know for sure but there may be elements of the MP story that will be spoilers for the SP story.  Binnatics or anyone else NOT on PSN may be able to comment more on that  :D  >:((

Nice ride  :)

I don't care about spoilers. I don't care about P1. I take what I get when I get it and try to make the best of it. I had an opportunity to play with Binnatics online which, by the way, was more fun than some people stuck to PSN might even try to guess at right now.  8-X :-()

I'll give SP a shot in a bit. Right now I'll just sit here and twiddle my thumbs for a while, smiling while offline because I know I could just click on that connect button and play online whenever I wanted. On and off.. on and off.. >:D

I know it's sad. And it's not the fault of the players who chose to play on consoles. Looks like no matter where, what and when, everyone will have to suffer from outages one way or another sooner or later.

Let's just hope that PSN thing gets sorted and everyone can play their games again :)

Then, when the time is right, which it almost always is, we keep cultivating rituals of affection such as hugging each other.

When we're not cultivating other dear habits such as affectionately dropping each other down the nearest abyss, that is.  :-D

OK, time to admit I liked playing Portal2.  :) :-X

I started right away playing some MP with my team partner Binnatics and quickly got used to "thinking portals."

[smg id=3280 type=link align=center width=400 caption="Portal2 MP 009"]

Then I played the SP bit for some time which was good, too.

[smg id=3278 type=link align=center width=400 caption="Portal2 SP 004"]

I "wasted" a lot of time in SP just having fun and "testing" the possibilities the game offered, such as splashing white stuff ALL across the map and create more portals to send the white stuff flying..

[smg id=3279 type=link align=center width=400 caption="Portal2 SP 005"]

Meanwhile I finished both the SP and MP part of the game so I thought it was time I said a few words here. :)

I might even buy Portal1, after all  :-D

Now that I'm through with both SP and MP, I can comment on that. As far as I am concerned, there are no spoilers. The only thing that shows MP is meant to be played after the SP bit is the presence of different kinds of gel and all that. During the course of the SP bit you'll find time to learn how they w%&k one by one and are given time to adjust your skills accordingly. Those are needed when playing MP.

However, I had to (wanted to) try the hard way and, being a complete noob at that time, not having played either Portal1 or the SP bit of Portal2, it didn't really matter. I found out how the stuff works pretty fast and of course a team partner can still tell you how to use stuff you find for the first time, given he himself already knows what to do with the stuff :)

Good pics, Art :) I'm glad you liked the game!

If you're thinking of getting P1, just be aware that it's a shorter game than the newie. Also some of the puzzle elements in P2 are new with that game, such as the gels, the light-bridges and those blue spiral things. You won't find any of those in P1. However P1 has puzzle elements that weren't in the sequel, so it kind of balances out and it's still lots of fun. IMO a few of the puzzles in P1 were actually tougher than those in P2.

And thanks for the MP rundown :-X

welcome :) And thanks, too :)

I actually managed to get my hands on P1. Took some time finding a copy in a shop but as spaceboy mentioned there is an orange box and P1 is in it. Costed only 19€ for HL2:E2,TF2 and... Portal. Not going to touch the other games. It's a German (aka fully censored) version of HL2 and TF2 so.. can't be bothered. The only thing that worries me about Portal1 is.. will it be in English? An option for the language? I really, really hope so as I'm not going to like to hear GLaDOS in a dubbed version.

I'll keep you posted :)

I'm in!

I'm now happily trudging on to get myself killed, probably, in the process of the first proper Aperture Science Test.

Truth be told, I'd be in a foul mood today, in a very  foul mood, if I hadn't found a retail version of Portal1. The game is from 2007 so I consider myself lucky. Even more so because, on top, the game is in English (phew) :)

Yay  :-() :-X

I was actually quite curious about a GlaDOS in German: How funny it would be hearing her say:
"Vielleicht möchtest Du das Ding zu heiraten, da Sie es so viel Liebe. Wollen Sie es zu heiraten? NUN, ICH LASSE DICH NICHT!!!! Wie fühlt sich das?" ^+-+

Thanx to: 'Portal Soundboard' and 'Google translate'  :-D
Title: Re: Get Art to play Portal2 contest
Post by: Art Blade on May 02, 2011, 10:43:03 AM
Trying to make sense of that: (fist of all, there is a "Sie" and a "Du" and we have to decide whether to use the polite form "Sie" used in conversations between adults like boss and employee or the "Du" form used among friends. Let's use "Sie" as GLaDOS and Chell aren't exactly friends.

"Vielleicht möchten Sie das Ding heiraten, da Sie es so sehr lieben. Wollen Sie es heiraten? NUN, ICH LASSE SIE NICHT! Wie fühlt sich das an?"

;D

Alright.. hehe  ;)

Good to be back to where I have never been.  ;D I'm looking forward to this P1 :)
Title: Re: Get Art to play Portal2 contest

I totally agree in the 'Sie' in stead of 'Du' thing. Google translate faked me there, but google couldn't have known, so it's my own mistake I'm affraid  :-\\

I just found it funny, since in Holland we still make fun of the German synchronization in old movies every once in a while. Since Dutch people used to watch the greater films on German television in the 80's when we still had like 3 Dutch channels and a lack of good movies shown there... ^-^

Reminds me of FarCry(1) when I played that in Spanish. There were two situations I remember the lines of:

"¡Doyle! Hijo de puta, eres tú, ¡cabrón! Sé donde estás. ¡Estoy dirigiéndome ahora mismo hácia allí! ¡Voy a buscarte y arrancarte la lengua!"  ^+-+

and

"Esos imbéciles. Acaban de escuchar historias sobre un fantasma y ahora, cada vez que se caye una hoja, piensan que alguien está intentando matarles." ^+-+

IMO a few of the puzzles in P1 were actually tougher than those in P2.

I agree with that  :-X  I think it was because some of those puzzles were so complex in their simplicity - you would walk into a nearly empty, very sterile looking room and, somehow, you were supposed to get from A to B using . . . what? This big room full of air? It demanded a way of thinking that most gamers (including myself) weren't used to.  In a way the more worn and chaotic environments of P2 tend to direct your eyes to the important elements of the room a little more quickly.  I would guess this was necessary given the much more grand scope and scale of the game.

 :)

Currently I'm in chamber 18/19 (probably more to come, but those are the first 19 of P1) and I like it. Interesting. In my case I think it helped that I had played P2 before. :)

really glad to hear you're liking the Portal games :)

oh.. now that's a quick game if there aren't more than those "first 19" tests. However, yes, I like those games :)

Portal2 is enormous compared to Portal1 and on top it has another big MP part.  :) :-X

By the way, Binnatics and I played some MP again. We had one chamber where we changed roles -- what had been my part was now his and vice versa and we came up with a different solution for the same chamber. So there apparently isn't always just one solution which is rather interesting to know.  :)

don't listen to JRD Art, just go into the fire pit like GLaDOS asks you to do.  There's nothing you can do about it  ;)

I'm already pit boss (jumped into certain death when politely being asked by Wheatley to do so) and I listened to GLaDOS when she told me (inhaled all sorts of lethal poisons) so I reckon I'm already prepared to do the very same.. do what no one else would.. go face death again (reassembly assured)  >:D

So, did you sink into the furnace peacefully, or do...something else?

Glad you enjoyed P1 and 2 also that you were persuaded to give it a go. I only finished P2 a few months ago myself - a case of too many games on the go unfortunately.

New MP content has been available for a while now and a map editor has been added more recently so the players can design levels themselves and share these - all announced in true Aperture style  :)

Heheh, nice introduction. Solid humour. It looks promising. More user-friendly than the beta they released last year. I still get cold sweat remembering my effort in putting together a working button that even looks like a button :-D

after P2 with Binnatics I tried P1 and once that was done some more co-op on P2 with Dweller_Benthos and never picked it up ever since. Was a nice diversion and I hadn't expected it to be so much fun but in the end, nothing to actually stick with.

I'm still waiting for Half-Life 2 Episode 3 which apparently is supposed to tie in with the Portal/Aperture world, but it's been vaporware so far...

Yeah, it's fun and co-op is pretty cool (when my connection can handle it, which it usually can't) but Portal is a play it once type of game, maybe twice, as the second time around, you try to get all the secrets or beat times or something. They've injected some new life into it now with community made levels which are easy to grab and try out. I've gotten a few and they are fun and usually well made, as long as you stick with the 4 or 5 star rated ones, and there's a ton of them, so not much danger of running out. So, for a quick game or two, you can play a few user levels and have a good time of it. But re-playing them is about the same as the original game levels, been there, done that.

I'm also waiting for Half-Life 3 with the Portal tie-in, but knowing how Valve operates, that may be a while.

You can say that again! Man they take a long march to complete that trilogy :o
I'm in doubt if it will ever be completed. Something like La Sagrada Familia. Ever under construction :-D

Only the creator (architect) of la sagrada familia is dead without leaving any plans so his disciples try to finish it the way they think he would have. They rely on donations, another handicap that keeps them from getting it over with any time soon.

Not to mention Gaudí's original design was impossible to build with the technology of the time. Looks like they think it may be finished "in the first third of the 21st century" lol. Maybe 2026, 100 years after Gaudí's death.

Still probably get finished before Half Life 3 comes out, lol.

Here's a set of coasters for the complete Portal fanatic:

[smg id=4542 width=450]

If you really want a set you can get them from here, along with some other nerdy Portal-related stuff:

http://www.thinkgeek.com/homeoffice/kitchen/e912/?srp=6 (http://www.thinkgeek.com/homeoffice/kitchen/e912/?srp=6)

I don't know how safe this site is to purchase from and I'm not about to try and find out as it looks like you have to register with these people to buy from them (bugger that). It's probably OK, but I'm inclined to let others take the risk :-() Paranoid I may be, but about the only thing I ever buy online is the occasional book or CD from Amazon.

I wouldn't mind having these coasters though, and I'd probably buy them if I could get them from a real shop.

I have no idea why the word "coaster" is used as a name for a table protector to put under a glass... It's not just an expression from my own country, I believe Americans (and Britons?) also say coaster. Hmm... ????
Title: Re: Get Art to play Portal2 contest

Indeed, I was wondering why 'coaster' is used.

From the Etymology Dictionary:
Quote1570s, "one who sails along coasts," from coast in verbal sense. Applied to vessels for such sailing from 1680s. Tabletop drink stand (c.1887), originally "round tray for a decanter," so called from a resemblance to a sled, or because it "coasted" around the perimeter of the table to each guest in turn after dinner (cf. coast in verbal sense "to go around the sides or border" of something).

So, the two seem linked.

when I look up English words, usually they have AE or BE next to it if there are differences in either language. Coaster was AE and beer mat BE  :)
