Title: Mercs Say The Darndest Things
Post by: eor123 on March 18, 2010, 09:53:16 PM
I started keeping notes on some of the funnier things the Mercs say when hanging out or in a fire fight.

As your reputation increases the things they yell out in combat are often so hilarious it breaks my concentration.

These are certainly not word-for-word accurate as I have to pause the game and make notes on what I had just heard but they are pretty close and capture the overall feel.

"It's him! What do we do?!
"What do you mean? Shoot him you Goddamn idiot!"

"What do we do?"
"We kill the ba$t@rd!"
"Nobody can kill him!"
"Shut the Hell up!"

"Let me be clear. f@#$ off."

"I don't like to be stared at. f@#$ off."

"There's a limit to the stupidity I can handle."

"Oh no! It's him! It's that psycho Merc everyone's on about!"

Bloody Hell! It's Him!"
"Watch it! This guy's messed up!"

"Yeah, well back to the salt mines."

"We gotta charge! I'll cover you!"
"Are you nuts? I'll cover you!
"Shut the Hell up!"

I'll add more as I come across them.

I'd love to get the complete script of the guy who carries on about having "no money and dying in this Hellhole" "

"I never should have answered the Goddamn phone. I never should have gotten on the Goddamn plane. I never should have taken this sh!$ job. Now I"m going to die here in this Hellhole. "

He also says "I should never have gotten out of bed"  :)

Nice topic, mate  ;D :-X

Oh, I like:

"Did you learn that stare in the mirror?"

That one sounds like it could of been said by any Politician or Civil Servant on the wrong side of the 'People'.

The NPC's who speak in Call of Pripyat are no where near as humorous as the Merc's in FC2, suppose its that grim, stoic Soviet outlook on life. They just tend to be blunt and t the point with the occasional threat or insult for good measure.

AC2 has a couple of nice lines. Caterina, a noble woman, shouts down a tower towards some aggressors: "I'll kick you so hard in your balls, they'll come shooting out through your nostrils!"  ;D

A conversation that always cracks me up is two of the mercs talking.

Merc 1 "Yeah? Well if he shows up here I'm just going to bugger off into the brush."

Merc 2 "You'll stand your ground or I'll shoot you myself!"

So that is what they are saying...I've had trouble understanding that one.

At times the accents and the relative low volume make them hard for me to decipher.

I wonder what the Mercs who are speaking the non-English languages are saying?

I assume they are using Afrikans, Swahili, and Russian?

Even I am not enough of a geek to figure that out.  ;D

I recognised Cape Dutch (aka Afrikaans), and at least two African languages/dialects, one of which was the click-language. I didn't recognise any Russian.

Hearing a new phrase in Pala recently -- from a threatening merc.

"You better be set to do the business."

I extracted the music and set up a play list so I could listen to it at w@&k, but I didn't look for the merc lines - probably easy enough to do though.  I might take a look when I get a chance.

Some misc. references to yours truly while hanging out in Pala with a Level 3 Rep:

"I heard that ba$t@rd took four rounds to the chest and didn't stop grinning."

"You think that nutjob's gun ever jams?"

"Between The Jackal and this psycho merc running around I'm amazed we aren't  all raving lunatics.

"What you should be watching out for is that psycho butcher that out's there killing all of your friends."

"That mad freelancer could show up at any moment and your on about cricket?"

"Oh Christ, don't look now!"
"What does HE want?"

"You sayin' an independent merc is making parasites appear among the men?"
"It's  possible. You know that."
"Yeah, whatever. Hey...what's that in your hair?"

And some trash talking between factions...

"Hey! You know what I like about this cease fire?"
"What?"
"I get a good long look at you animals. It's like visiting a zoo. I realize you're nothing but fat lazy slobs!"
"Come a little closer and I'll rip your arm off!"

Hearing all this is a little tricky...you have to get close enough to hear it but if you get too close they stop talking and stare at you or walk away.

There was an interesting exchange in which one tells the other they got a case of beer. The second says something like, "Yeah..that's a great idea...getting tanked when there is a psycho merc on the way."

I've got a recorder setup --- nothing digital, though. The next time I get them cornered in a firefight I'm going to try and record some of the funny stuff they say when you have a Level 2 or 3 Rep.

Not an exact quote but I've overheard a conversation along the following lines.

Merc 1: A few years ago my folks paid $3000 for an African safari and here I am getting it for free.

Merc 2: Hey! No pay, not enough food and some psycho is buggering off all your mates. You're getting the full meal deal!

From a firefight with a Level 4 Rep...

"s#!t, I was right. The whole time in this country I knew it. I knew I was going to die in this bloody place. Oh that's true. Got no money. Got no passport. Got no ticket home. Now I'm going to die in this Goaddamn Hellhole.

"s#!t. I never should have gotten the damn phone. Never should have got out of bed. Never should have got on that fucking plane. Never should have taken this s#!t detail. Never...

"Hey! Hey! Let's make a deal, man! You hear me? Just let me walk, man! Come on! I'm not ready. I'm not ready for this. I got bills to pay. I'm not ready!"
Title: Re: Mercs Under Stress Say The Darndest Things

There's one along the line of

"Jesus, don't let me die. Don't let me die here in this fucking hellhole, not like all the others. I just wanna go home, I wanna go hoooome!"

I heard your words and considered allowing you to walk away but even while your mouth was pleading for mercy your rifle was clutched at the ready and you were advancing on my position with grim determination.

Too bad for you.  Eh?.  :-*

Heard a new one last night.

Had two mercs cornered in a downstairs room of the villa. As I walked into the villa and positioned myself for a shot one merc fired and apparently hit the other, prompting the second to yell, "Hey! Hey! Don't shoot!"

And that Yabek on the barge under the bridge...boy does he have potty mouth.  I thought I would bypass the bridge blowup side mission and kill him the old fashioned way. That turned out to be a bit tough as the mercs around the barge are numerous and heavily armed.

"f@#k you! I have a gun! Suck my d@#k!"

I suppose he was expecting Michelle.

I chose to lob a frag in his direction instead.  ;D

Overheard recently:

"He can't be killed! He can't be killed!"

I've heard this hundreds of times but it still makes me chuckle and sometimes respond:

"What? Are we under attack?"

No, doofus. Someone decided to set of fireworks in a thunderstorm and the AT exploded as a  result of spontaneous combustion...and an African tetse fly coincidentally just bit you in the a$$.

Ever notice that each time you fire a grenade launcher, a merc yells, " Oh f@#k!"

I do the same thing when they fire them at me.

"moll" is generally a semi-derogatory term for the girlfriend of a gangster or mob boss. So, calling someone a moll is essentially calling them a girl.

I always liked those (but I haven't played FC2 frequently in the last couple of weeks, so I may be slightly inaccurate):

"I've seen you, you piece of sh!$! You're nothing, and I'm gonna make you a whole lot less than nothing! Come on, a$$hole, fight me like a man!"

And

"Come on, sweetheart... I've got a present for you!"  ;D ;D ;D

I've just heard that line again, yet I think I heard this:

- "They went and lost him!"
- "I told you he was more than useless."

I think the first guy must have mentioned to the second guy sometimes that our character was something like "a useless piece of sh!$" or the likes, and the second guy now tells the first guy that he obviously had underestimated "us." At least that is what I gather from what I heard.

/edited the first line.

Hanging around the towns seems to produce some of the most memorable dialogue. I overheard a shouting match yesterday which I've never heard before, and only caught the last couple of lines, which were something like (not exactly):

Merc 1: "You look like you were dropped on your head when you were a baby!"

Merc 2: "Come here and say that, I'll drop you!"

Merc 1: "In your dreams!"

I wish I could have made out the first few lines, but a couple of mercs closer by were talking and all I could hear was vague shouting.

I just opened fire from the roof in Port Soleo with a Level 4 Rep.

The merc chaos was so extreme, I think I heard about every "AI under stress" script. There were so many mercs screaming and cursing I couldn't separate them. My stepson watched for a while and said, "Man, you gotta let me borrow this when you are through with it."

I was planning to, but I never quite seem to get through with it.   ;D

While I'm level 4 rep, I like walking up on a pair of mercs where one of them is talking about how he's going to handle me when he gets his chance and I'll bump directly into him to get the 180 degree change of attitude when he realizes it's put up or shut up time.

Don't have the exact wording but have heard some interesting exchanges between "the Doc" and a wounded guy he is patching uo.

The wounded guy says something like, "Hey! Are you digging all the way to China Doc?"

The Doc replies " Hang on tough guy, you're going to be fine."

And the Doc also says something like,  Take two aspirin and a bottle of
Scotch and you'll be fine by morning."

I remember two Doc-situations.

One, when some nearby merc comments "Make it quick, Doc, he looks like he got caught by a f@#$ing rhino!" -- I love that one  :))

Two, when the Doc tells the wounded "you're lucky he was such a sh!$ shot"

I was in a fire fight at a GP near the Salvage Yard [Level 3 Rep] and had taken cover inside the building.

I almost got killed I was laughing so hard.

I was in Selao ripping things up and I just caught the following for the first time.

1st merc "He's right there at the barrel!"

2nd merc "Well get him!  One shot will set that barrel right off!"

When this was said I was right at the yellow barrel that's just around the corner from the ladder up to the roof of the central building.  It was interesting to catch the mercs saying something that was very specific to my location like that.

I've often heard things like, "Quick! He was just over there!" and "There he is!" So in view of what you reported, I guess they only say those things when they really do see you, and it's not just a case of random pieces of dialogue thrown in.

Excellent observation, mandru - I've never noticed that type of specificity either, but was usually too busy dodging bullets while running away to hear much of anything  ;D

I was in god + ignore mode and was crouching to place an IED on that barrel as I caught that line of dialog.  So even though the mercs couldn't see me, the game could and prompted them to deliver that line.

I've noticed mercs are the only thing that can't see me when I'm in ignore mode because while I'm driving under the influence ( :P) or on foot the animals in the game will react the same as ever and bolt away when I approach.

I too have encountered "He's on the roof", "He's up there" and even "He's in there!  Toss in a grenade!" but I had taken those as just being generic lines not realizing that my specific location was triggering them.

Now I'm going to have to pay more attention to that chatter to try to catch more like that.

Another Doc-situation

"Doc, quick!"
"Where is he?"
"My legs... I can't feel my legs!"
"I'm right over!"
"I'm in bad shape, doc."
"Nah, you'll be alright. You still got your looks."

On the mission where you assassinate the used car salesman for Josip, I found both the salesman and a merc asleep at the hut in Mokuba. The salesman was sleeping on the ground and I literally stepped on him while looking around. In the past, he had always been inside the hut and seemed to have ESP as he opened fire before it was possible to see me.

The merc was supposed to be laying on the cot inside the hut, but he hadn't spawned in the correct place. He was levitating in his sleep just outside the hut. Killed them both with silenced pistol and left the area without any drama.

It was another weird twist that keeps the game interesting.

I found a few mercs sleeping at night, namely indeed that used cars salesman, I too saw him sleep outside his hut on the floor (which was an easy sniper hit for me), then at the Polytech, left of the entrance in a hut, there were two guys asleep; and somewhere near a guard post (I believe near the Post Office on your way back to Port Selao) in a hut. That one was sleeping on a bed, and I took my time mentally playing through variations of how to kill him until I finally took him out with a 6P9 not to wake fellow buddies.

In finding sleeping mercs, night time is a must. Several times I have thought that there was a pile of rags in my way while skulking through a CP in stealth mode only to realize I'd found the easiest of targets.

There are a lot of places through the game that there will be a bedroll positioned near a CP that can be found and at night they're the first place I look when passing through as they are a nap spot magnet for mercs assigned to that area.

The CP on the river just North of the POLY Tech (where the merc with the Carl G is posted) is one such spot with an established preset bedroll laid out about 10 feet S.E. of the ammo cache. Off the top of my head this is the easiest to remember but when I'm in game I have a mental map as I approach different areas to scope out.

I've not encountered too many sleeping mercs, but I dearly love to sneak around.  One of my favorite GPs is the one north of Weelegol village - there are propane tanks that you can torch with your 6P9 - it takes a few shots, but the mercs don't hear them.  Once you set off the propane, it spins about, then explodes setting the grass on fire, which in turn sets off other tanks.  Soon the entire area is ablaze and the mercs are frantically running around.

Another place I like this approach is from the western fuel tower at PetroSahel - standing on top, you can shoot flammables through the window of the warehouse, and elsewhere in the area.  If lucky enough, the resulting ball of fire is massive, and they never know you're there because of your position and the use of a silent weapon.

I had a problem with my sound - it was reversed; you could hear noises/talking clearest and loudest when facing away from it. I just toughed it out the first three play-throughs, but finally got around to fooling with the sound setup before my current (4th) time through.

So, finally able to hear clearly, I accepted a mission from the UFLL and was in my vehicle driving too fast out of town. I missed my turn without realizing it until I distinctly heard a merc say "Wrong way, a$$hole!" I stopped and checked my map, and sure enough...

Wow, I know that phrase but it's unrelated to driving!   ????

When you are in one of the towns that have the off limits areas that are guarded (such as the the two diamond locations up North in Pala) if you approach too closely that is one of the lines the mecs will use to warn you off right before they start shooting.

I've had word tracks pop up out of the blue at inappropriate times  but that's a good one and coincidentally got you back on the correct course.    :-X

I came across a line this morning deep into Bowa-Seko that I've heard on the periphery of merc chatter but was in a position to pay attention this time.  This is not an exact quote (working from memory I've got it as close as possible) but but I think I've captured 99% of the conversational intent.

Merc 1: "What say we get some guys together and crack out the beers?"

Merc 2: "Sounds good!  Where to?

Merc 1: "How about that place Mike's?"

Merc 2: "No can do mate, it's off limits. That place is for Independents only, it's part of the cease fire agreement."

For some reason I'm hearing lots more dialog this play through - perhaps it is because I'm not so focused on just plain basic survival.  :-()

In fact, I appear to be lots better at shooting, running, hiding, and escape than when I left the game some time ago - perhaps it is the skill I've been acquiring in AC2, AC:B, JC2, etc.  >:D

Whatever the reason, I'm enjoying the game quite a bit more because I not so worried about dying.

I recall the complaints about the driving times, the uncanny ability of the ATPs to find you, and the hostility of the guards at the posts.  I happily report that none of these things are bothering me (they didn't much before, but even less so now, even though I play games with fast travel)

Unfortunately the mercs are deaf to what we say, they only listen to themselves. When someone shouts "motherf.." at me I have a couple of replies at hand, like "your Mom always asked for more" or "I never touched your mother, ugly as she is" but they never pay attention.

I picked up a new line of dialog from the mercs last night while checking out this latest driver for my GTX 295 NVIDIA GPU.

I was traveling in a freshly acquired GLAT from Sepoko back down towards the N.E. cell tower to where there's that one GP straddling the road.  I rolled up to where I was close enough to alert the mercs posted there and switched to the gunner position to deal out some death.

I distinctly heard one merc shout to the others "HEY! Let this guy be, he's a psycho!"

None of the others heeded his warning but then neither did I.   >:D

I'm pretty sure about the change of dialogue when rep level rises.  I've noticed them getting afraid faster and sound more panicking once you reach higher levels.
I think I was quite focused to that phenomena since I'd recently played Batman AA, where that was a common part of any 'silent-takedown' confrontation.  >:D

I assume they are using Afrikans, Swahili, and Russian?
There is definitely one Dutch speaker and an Afrikaans too - the Dutch one's accent is very Hilversum, just outside Amsterdam and the accent used lots on Dutch TV. I've not been able to hear the whole sentence as the merc was usually approaching, plus just having started the game (and it being night) I was too busy trying to spot him before he found me...but this is what I can infer from the last snippet.

"...je had er moeten spelen." which is roughly "...but you just had to play." I'll listen out for it again, especially now that I'm more able for them and don't have to focus so much - if I'm lucky I should be able to get right up behind their GP and catch the whole dialogue once they know I'm there.

That is an interesting observation. I've mainly interpreted every Dutch-sounding conversation as Afrikaans, since I hadn't figured there would be a Dutch guy running round the African bush, but you may be right. I'll try to take a careful listen next playthrough (note to self; start that new playthrough finally)

Just a side-note: I've recently been listening to internet radio broadcasted from South Africa (with my new network receiver toy) and I could pretty much understand all the Afrikaans they were speaking. Very interesting to hear how the Dutch language has passed through a different evolution. You can also hear changes in the Dutch spoken by people from Surinam or the Antilles. For example in Surinam people have some sort of old fashioned way of speaking, which has already disappeared in Holland. There it's still quite common.
The Afrikaans Dutch seems to have evolved into a ruffer language with more rasping sounds and seems a bit simplified to me in grammatical aspect.

I wonder how that must be for English people? Do local accents still surprise you and make your own language feel like spoken in a place far away in space and time? Or has it all somewhat merged together again due to the global importance of the language?
Title: Re: Mercs Say The Darndest Things
Post by: Jim di Griz on June 14, 2012, 03:42:44 PM
I think with Afrikaans you've got a noticeably strong difference due to the time and influence of other languages - pretty much what Canadian French is to modern French I'd say. I'm sure English has it too but I've not heard any stand-out examples myself, so I think you're right, the global amalgamation is slowly knocking all of the edges off  :(

I might be wrong about the one Dutch voice though - that's just the way it sounded to my ear, and to be fair, it's been fourteen years since I lived there, so I'm more than likely a bit rusty in accent recognition. Funny how much Danish I can understand though after learning Dutch  :)

Sorry about going a bit off topic by the way.

Don't worry about getting off topic over here. The best conversations usually start off topic ^-^ :-X

I've heard it before, the comparison between Danish and Dutch. I don't know Danish well enough to have a good opinion, but it sure looks the same when written down (same for Swedish btw)
There was a Danish guy though at my college, that was from Denmark. He only lived in Holland 2 years back then, and I wouldn't know the difference from a real Dutchman when he spoke. Really amazing.

As Binn mentioned, we never balk at going off topic  ;)  In fact, we tend to have discussions that are very much like we would have in person - the topic changes with time, so feel free to add anything or diverge whenever the thoughts come.  It is way too much trouble to search each time you want to discuss something.  I've visited other forums where a new visitor is blasted for asking a question that was answered in a topic somewhere, and all that does in my opinion is inhibit people from posting, so here at OWG, anything goes.

Well, for me in America, it is often quite possible to determine the regional location of an individual from their accent, especially if you have lived there before.  For instance, I formerly lived in New England (Vermont), and it was easy for me to detect the difference between accents (several) within New York state, and then very easily the nearby New Jersey.  Then also having lived in Texas and a couple of southern States, you become accustomed to the regional differences in how words are pronounced, and sentences are constructed even though we all technically speak the same language.  Then of course, there are the differences we hear in English in the UK and Australia.

It is fascinating how people tend to mimic one another, and I imagine that the development of an "accent" falls on a single individual who has pronounced a particular word in an unusual manner, and others pick it up.  Then if populations are physically isolated from one another, their languages tend to diverge in time, even if they initially were exactly the same.

Cheers both - I rather got the impression that divergent conversations might be the norm after reading through a few threads - still, I felt it best to apologise just in case (how very British of me.)

I've got a reasonable ear for accent differences, possibly due to having lived in Wales, where each valley has its own accent.

Title: Re: Mercs Say The Darndest Things
Post by: fragger on June 18, 2012, 03:59:38 AM
According to a couple of sources I've consulted, modern American English sounds more the way older English used to, and it's actually English English that's done most of the changing over the last few centuries. Another way to put it is that if you went back in time a few hundred years and visited England, the people would sound to you more like modern Americans than modern Britons.

We can't really know how true that is at this remove, but obviously dialects, speech patterns and accents change over time. I've noticed that if I see and hear old Australian newsreel footage from the WW2 era, the Aussie accents definitely sound subtly different to what I hear today. A hundred years from now they'll sound even more different, no doubt. That's linguistic evolution in operation, and the divergence is even greater when a language has been transported to some far-off locale where it begins to evolve separately from the mother tongue, especially in times past where distance has been a major factor.

As for ruining English, American inputs and influences are just part of the ongoing development of language that goes on all over the world all the time, and not just with the English language. Dutch and Afrikaans is another example of two dialects, each sharing a common ancestor, diverging as a result of location, time and distance.

I sometimes wonder if languages and dialects will continue to diverge in this manner now that the internet is overcoming the "tyranny of distance". With more people from disparate cultures increasingly connecting with each other in real time over more of the world's surface, will prevalent languages like English continue to diverge or will they in fact become more cohesive? I find myself alternating between English and American spellings and figures of speech far more than I ever have in the past, and I have no doubt that this is due to the influence of the net (as well as the media, but mostly the net). I don't do it unconsciously, I do it because some "Americanisms" appeal to me and I find it fun to employ them from time to time. But over time and with repeated usage, I'm sure I will eventually use American expressions and spellings unconsciously. I already alternate between "a$$" and "arse" without really thinking about it. Go figure ;D

We do live in interesting times.

From my point of view, not being a native English speaker, it seems that AE is simpler. The way "average" Americans talk and write compared to "average" Britons indicates that they cut off all the nice little things I like about British English. Apart from some dialects, spoken American English has a lot less "melody" to it compared to the nearly singing type of British English. Written AE simplifies "complicated" spelling and kind of mimics a phonetic writing. For example nite rather than night, center rather than centre, mesmerize rather than mesmerise. But they all say amazing and never "amasing".  I'd guess that in general AE is easier to grasp than BE. Then there are those differences, as fragger pointed out: a$$ rather than arse. Bucks rather than quids -- hehe :)

It is difficult to ignore the differences in regional usage of the English language and I too alternate between spelling variations on occasion.  I also pronounce words differently when the mood strikes.  For instance I sometimes pronounce "skeletal" as "skull-ee-tal" instead of how it is normally pronounced in my area "skell-eh-tail"

The word Skeleton is in fact a weird word. In Dutch it's somewhat the same 'skelet' and it sounds un-Dutch to me. I was thinking of that recently when my daughter pronounced the word for some reason.
In Dutch a proper term for Skeleton might be 'bot-stelsel' (bone-system). Don't know if the word could sound weird in English too, maybe it's just weird-old-me that find a word funny again :-D

Aparently it's a modern Latin word (well, modern as in the re-emergence of Latin well after the Roman Empire c1570) so I'd say the church had something to do with that one - plus the English and Dutch were either fighting or trading with each other for most of the 16thC so some crossover was likely - we got a lot of nautical terms from the Dutch language and more Brits spoke High Nederlands than Dutch would have spoken English back then (this is according to a Dutch publication about the history and evolution of Nederlands.)

What Fragger says is also spot on - I too find myself borrowing Americanisms mostly because they fit. Equally I also borrow Aussie/Kiwi turns of phrase due to a high percentage of gaming friends hailing from that quarter - though I haven't used 'ripper' in a long time... :)

Having said that, I use old English words quite frequently for the same reason - I like 'em. I tend to keep to the English spellings though, weird as they are.

As for the 'Net drawing things closer: yup, I agree. It can only enrichen peoples' vocabulary choices, bringing some words back into usage that have caught on again after apparently falling asleep for a few centuries. It's all good, I say.

With the changes that is happening in SA it brought about an almost complete new version of English, although the spelling basically stays the same the pronunciation has gone for a ball of chalk, and all this comes from politicians and the media, news readers, reporters, program hosts and advertising..

I can't believe I just found this thread. Overlooked it for years. Very interesting lines and most of them were unknown to me.

Today I heard something I hoped I would find here, but I can't remember exactly. Two mercs were talking and one of them said something about screwing the sister of the other merc. I hope I hear these lines again, they were funny.

Merc 1: "You look like you were dropped on your head when you were a baby!"

Merc 2: "Come here and say that, I'll drop you!"

Merc 1: "In your dreams!"

It seems I have to pay even more attention to the speaking mercs.

I heard two mercs in Pala speaking about their wife being pregnant for 3 months and the other one replying: "you could afford college when this is over". I modded the max reputation values in gamemodesconfig and I heard a merc shout "I'll kill you!" in Leboa near a GP  I find it funny when they shout "Who the hell are those guys?!" "I think its only one" "Who is that guy? CIA? KGB?! Who knows?"

Regarding quotes: I got a DIFFERENT reaction from the police chief when I shot him. I was at rep level 5.  He said "You have already killed me, but you must do it public" Rather than pulling out his weapon and shoot me, he apparently asked me to shoot him  :o :o

me neither  ???? :)

I modded my game so I got to rep. 5 after I completed all missions for the UFLL and all buddy missions. I will do some recordings on friday regarding that mission. The chief's brother reacted differently too  :o He didn't called me a thief, but said "You don't need to use it. Take whatever it is". Probably referred to my machete or my weapons and he somehow knew that I was after the ledger  >:D ???
