Just purchased my retail copy of GTAV and on the box it mentions an included first person mode. Found a few pics (https://www.google.com/search?q=gta+v+first+person+mode&tbm=isch&imgil=cMTdGExeZYWFBM%253A%253BLVoEZUW9PAdRhM%253Bhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.theverge.com%25252F2014%25252F11%25252F17%25252F7234541%25252Fgrand-theft-auto-v-in-first-person-is-crazy&source=iu&pf=m&fir=cMTdGExeZYWFBM%253A%252CLVoEZUW9PAdRhM%252C_&usg=__OZLHCw3MA7ZUqjB1SPrlDKay9f8%3D&biw=1920&bih=943&ved=0CCsQyjc&ei=YqYtVY2TI42rogTmqYDYBg#imgrc=cMTdGExeZYWFBM%253A%3BLVoEZUW9PAdRhM%3Bhttps%253A%252F%252Fcdn0.vox-cdn.com%252Fthumbor%252FJJo4RQ1gu3_H_uwL3bGBBKM0lR4%253D%252Fcdn0.vox-cdn.com%252Fuploads%252Fchorus_asset%252Ffile%252F2464874%252F1064-1920.0.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.theverge.com%252F2014%252F11%252F17%252F7234541%252Fgrand-theft-auto-v-in-first-person-is-crazy%3B1920%3B1080):

Yep, I checked it, it looks cool! You can spot the inside of your car all around you, was looking for funny details in the Pißwasser truck :-D
Half of gauges w@&k also, so thats a nice feature also in FPM.
I like to use the FPM when driving, much more natural to me.
Well, that does look interesting, just might be a possibility for me then. Not for a while though, I want to at least finish FC4 first.
Just tried first person mode in GTA V today. It turns into a complete different game ??? ??? :-D :-D ^-^ ^-^
Interesting - better? worse?
Better and more immersive :-D :-D I replied to a comment on R*'s fps trailer like this: "It looks like Grand Cry Auto" since a guy commented for fun: "Didn't knew that Far Cry 4 was set in a city"
:-D it will be fun to try it out, but I am perfectly fine with 3rd person as well - kind of fun watching your character beating up people >:D
I case you struggle aiming down your gun in FPM, use the zoom option (like, the mouse wheel) to actually use sights.
Good to know :-X
and while we're on it, anyone new to the game here..
Q: HOW THE FUDGE DO I GET THIS FIRST PERSON VIEW TO w@&k?
A: CYCLE THROUGH THE CAMERA (VIEW) BUTTON UNTIL YOU'RE IN FIRST PERSON.
8-X :-()

D_B, I just checked my few achievements on steam, one of which is
"A New Perspective
Play GTA V for 15 hours in first person mode."and as of now, only a 1.7% of all players have achieved it.
That made me want to tell you: Get this game. Best open world, ever. And you can play it in 1st person all the way. I mostly play 1st person.
I have to admit that it is rare to find the magnitude of the open world, and unique places to explore in this game, and I have not been that fond of the series in the past.
I found out that when diving, either scuba diving or using a submarine, will be a lot better in FPM. under water your character will be in the center of your vision, making it very hard to look straight forward. Especially with the light-beams aiming just ahead of you, it is much better navigating in FPM :)
not to mention all the nice different dashboards of all the vehicles in FPM. It has never been more satisfying to run people over and watch them slide up and away over your windscreen :-D

I actually looked at it in Best Buy last weekend, had the ca$h on me too, but I want to wait a bit. First thing I want is to get a new video card, 970 or 980 I think.
Anyone know if the retail, bought in store on disc version is steam or do they have a separate launcher thing like Ubi does? I may skip the retail product if it's not steam, as getting updates without steam is a pain, like Ubi.
So, any experiences with that would help me out.
Retail copies doesn't go through Steam. They only go through Social Club ;)
It will not have Steam compatibility. If you want the Steam version, which I recommend, you will have to buy it through Steam. The only way I got a Steam game once, without paying Steam for it, was a free edition of Dirt2 that came with my new graphics card. It read on the box that you'd get a free download through steam ;)
You can link any game of your choice to Steam, making launching through Steam and Steam overlay possible, but it will not act like a Steam game related to achievements, statistics and updates.
Oh, you beat me on that GKID :)
Indeed, an option might be to buy it through Rockstar Warehouse. They may deliver comparable functionality, but I already used the Steam-invite option to invite GKID to a lobby we wanted to share in private. Worked easier than the RSC options to invite ppl ;)
Definitely try to get the Steam version 8)
You did explain why it doesn't w@&k with Steam in difference to me ;)
Rockstar's Social Club is in the form of their own client which checks for updates and launches the game much like the Ubi launcher.
The other disadvantage of the physical media is that you'll be doing 6 gb of updates right off the bat. In fact, the only advantage to the disc set is that it saves you 59 gb of download, so if you have a particularly slow internet connection (or bandwidth limits) that might be a factor.
Welcome to the dark side, D_B :-X
I can already envision D_B hauling his portable data storage device to his office drooling all over the place while downloading the game. :-D
D_B, if you buy scopes for your weapons and "zoom" in, you'll be able to use red dot sights and sniper scopes. :-D
Either way, I have to download at w@&k and carry it home, it's just that Steam is easier to do with the auto-backup and restore feature, I don't know how the rockstar thing works or if they even have a backup feature. The lack of backup is what makes Far Cry so much of a pain to update, luckily the setup they have is easy to figure out, I don't know what rockstar has or if it's even possible to do a "hack" fix to get a backup to transfer.
Anyone have any experience with that? Does the rockstar thing have any sort of backup ability where you can transfer the game data to another computer?
At this point I think I'll just get it on Steam and be done with it. I take it most of you guys have it on Steam?
I don't think the social club application has anything, but I was wondering the same and found this:
https://support.rockstargames.com/hc/communities/public/questions/203432607-How-to-backup-GTA-V-PC-files-
Good find PZ! I'd say go for Steam. Most of us have the Steam version. I haven't had trouble with it at all so far ;)
yep, steam
I read somewhere that copying the game folder even works for the Steam version - supposed to be way faster than the Steam backup/restore utility.
Here's a thread:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/31evbf/transferring_gta_v_files_to_friends_pc/ (http://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/31evbf/transferring_gta_v_files_to_friends_pc/)
If I would have known this I would have purchased the Steam version and brought a thumb to w@&k to do the same thing D_B plans
Thanks for the info guys, I'll probably go the steam route when the time comes.
As far as copying the folder vs using the steam backup, that might not be as fast. Steam backup compiles and compresses the files into DVD (or CD if you choose) sized pieces. It's always a lot faster to copy one archive file of say 1GB in size than 10,000 smaller files totaling 1GB in size. Plus if there are any files larger than the ~4GB limit of FAT 32 (the file system a lot of thumb drives use) then you are stuck with a file too big for your thumb drive unless you re-format it to NTFS or some other system that can support larger files. If the thumb drive can support that file system, that is.
I think you're going to like the game, D_B. :) There are sticky bombs and even sticky proximity mines to throw at stuff. :-()
Best of luck, D_B!
Yes D_B, and don't forget the video editor, where you can record game experiences and then edit the stuff you recorded as if you are a real-time movie producer, giving you the freedom to do whatever you want with the footage, from changing view to adding effect layers or slowing time. Great past-time once you get bored (if you ever get bored) of the Single player game ;)
D_B.. something for you to whet your appetite :-D
Difference between 3rd person..
[smg id=7876 type=preview align=center caption="Crap Rangoon goes in"]
[smg id=7877 type=preview align=center caption="and out again"]
..and 1st person.
[smg id=7878 type=preview align=center caption="Crap Rangoon 1st person"]
That scene is hillarious :-X
Yeah, eventually, I'm finally making my way through the last bits of FC4
Ironically I'll be headed back into FC4 likely once all you chaps are done with the game. Only waiting for bargain basement prices for the PC version, and of course, any mods that may be available.
[smg id=7879 type=preview align=center caption="goddamn bikers"]
I'm through with the main story missions. On my "way out" I raced through a horde of bikers, one of which I ran over properly and he went over the car with his bike. And then I kept hearing gunfire in my back and neither speeding up nor slowing down stopped that ruckus. So I stopped the car on the highway to take a look what the F was going on back there and found that goddamn biker who was somehow stuck (probably after I ran him over he landed on the trunk or some such) and he was kind of glued to the car. Of course, he kept shooting. So I put an end to that nonsense.
 :-X
>:D :-X
I keep chuckling when I see that pic with the dead biker :)
...
Achievement get!
[smg id=7972]
Pretty much the only time I go third person is when I'm hooking on to a car with the tow truck or to see while using cover. A few times I've gone to 3rd person to see how a wheelie looks on a bike or something.
:-X :)
Well done D_B! Took me about 200 in-game hours to get it :-D
lol, I don't think anyone in the world would beat D_B at in-game first person play time :-()
Nope, too bad there isn't a total in game timer in that list, just what you've played as each character.
I found out that First person playing can be a lot harder than 3rd person. The lack of some overview at the scene and the car-moving added to your aiming view makes it really challenging all together.
Me and Uzi just completed all heists in FP view. Art assisted us on some of them, and might deal with the rest of them himself some other day. Anyway, one thing is for sure; he's an excellent FP pilot :-X 8)
Thanx to Arts efforts we managed to pull off the most difficult heist finale, the Prison Break.
That was the last mission for me to complete the Different perspective award:

???
Nice achievement, but the FP mode is too broken to be played at, also the game mechanics aren't really made to w@&k with FP.
Driving is fine, but the shooting, unnatural view movement is something that I can't deal with at all. I never had a gun recoil make my head jump up and down, and I have used a anti turrent gun on top of a armored van.
The 1st person view is my preferred way of playing when it comes to game action, particularly driving and flying is a lot of fun. When it comes to shooting, I also almost always use 1st person. However, there are quite many occasions that make me go into 3rd person view (like buying and testing new clothes and then those hair dresser sessions..) so my stats tell me I spent some 400 hours looking over my shoulders :-D Overall I spent way more than 1/3 of my online gaming time in 1st person which means at this time roughly 250 hours.
[smg id=8058 type=preview align=center caption="1st person ftw"]
:-X :)
8) :)
I just realised that the times mentioned are online only. Total time played: nearly 1,200 hours. :-D
??? :-X :-D
You certainly got your money's worth, mate!
I should think so :-()
I remember people asking me whether I was still going to enjoy the game (it was only just released, unfortunately for consoles only) having watched around 12 different complete playthroughs on YouTube (third person only back then) and I always said, yes, I am certain I will. And I have been enjoying it tremendously indeed :-D
Indeed - a good video game is likely the best investment in entertainment per unit money
For a decent bottle of wine and dinner we spend lots more than the price of a game, and the dinner only lasts a few hours at the most.
Food is a necessity. ;)
You should have seen my stats on CS and CSS before steam decided to wipe the times five years ago. :D
Sniping in cover is a little bugged in first person. Sometimes, the weapon will not scope in properly if I try to aim up when in cover :(
Noticed a few weird things in first person. One being you automatically swim while in first person, and you can't stop. Trevor drowned on me that way. You have to go to third person to stop swimming. At least on my system anyway.
The other being for some reason, sometimes, you can run (or actually walk a little faster) while inside in third person than in first. Doesn't w@&k all the time, so who knows.
hehe, automatically moving when in 1st person sounds as if you had used a movement key while still in third and as if it had carried over when going into 1st. I found myself running when going into 1st sometimes and it was hard to "convince" my character to do as told, as in bloody stop running (in your case, stop swimming) However, if it happens only once in a while, it shouldn't be a game-breaking event. Drowning your character because you were unable to stop him from swimming sounds more like diving. In 1st person they tend to go down rather than up. Getting up works for me when I mash the green (A) button on the controller which is used to speed up when walking or running -- it makes the character go for the surface unless you use the direction keys for down at the time.
For some reason you can't run in certain parts of houses while there are some other parts where you may. Moving fast around inside a house is for whatever reason hampered by design.
I myself found a weird thing about swimming in 1st person as well; I can't make my character to dive. It stays on the surface no matter what keys I hammer. It's weird that the controlls for swimming are different when in first person than 3rd person.
I also noticed that running strafing isn't possible in first person; pressing shift will slow you down instead of turning you into running mode.
I think the first person is still a bit clumsy. And I heavily prefer 3rd over 1st in driving, since I have much better view of my surroundings. I'm a good driver in 3rd, while I seems a road-raging freak when in 1st :-D
You mean when it looks as if a red-hot burning meteor had ploughed through buildings and traffic and everything, it was you driving in 1st person? :-()
Thing is, I don't switch views, so I walk (in 1st P) up to a body of water, and jump in. Immediately start swimming and can't stop, so I'm not moving forward, switching from 3rd to 1st while still moving forward, so that the key gets "stuck", just going into water in 1st makes you swim until you switch to 3rd. As for drowning, yes, I was diving in 1st and couldn't swim up. I've also noticed what Binn mentioned, it's very hard to get underwater in 1st P, moving the mouse back to look down, holding shift to swim faster and then forward key usually does it, but again, swimming back to the surface can be tricky.
I usually drive in 1st though, only switching to 3rd when I need to do something precise like tow a car or park in an exact spot.
yes, precise manoeuvring is a lot easier in 3rd
Some more info on swimming in first person. Trevor woke up one time (in his underwear of course) next to a really nice house with a pool and diving board off the balcony. So of course, I trotted him up there to dive off, doing it in 3rd person and recording it in case anything funny happened.
Anyway, he dove off nicely and as I was swimming around, I noticed that the auto-swimming in first person only happens when you are using mouse and keyboard as controls. If you use the controller, it doesn't auto-swim. Strange. I can get in the water using the controller and swim fine, but as soon as I touch the mouse or keyboard, it goes into auto-swim mode.
I also noticed that it's very hard (impossible?) to dive under the water using the controller, but using the keyboard, diving is easy by using the jump key (I think, might be the run key), but it's almost impossible to swim back to the surface using the keyboard, but a little bit easier using the controller. Also, like when riding a bicycle, tapping the A button on the controller makes you swim faster.
So, if any of you need to dive under water, use the keyboard, and then use the controller to swim back up. Go figure.
nice. :-D
when I want to dive using the controller, I use the right joystick to "look down" and I can dive easily. However, it doesn't w@&k if the water is too shallow which many of the pools are. Then I need to jump off the ledge and it will cause the character to dive. Staying underwater requires me to keep pushing forward or whatever direction with the left joystick while looking down every few seconds, otherwise the character tends to surface.
The dive button is supposed to be the X button on the controller but it does nothing when I use it. Holding the left stick forward should just move you forward, like it does on land, not make you dive down. Weird. I've also just let off on all controls when underwater and he does nothing, just floats there and drowns. This is in either 1st or 3rd person, makes no difference.
jump: first start moving forward, then additionally hit the jump key.
I had a similar problem on the PC - couldn't figure out how to surface and my guy kept drowning \:/
