JRD is correct about freeing the buddy counting as a mission, which then cancels your other mission.
As to the Jackal tapes, I too seem to hear the same recording with each tape I collect. Not sure if it happened with the last patch though.
On the subject of the jackal tapes I'm on PS3 and they all have the boot story. I'm not sure but they may play different when done thru the journal. It seems my first playthru thought I heard different stories, but that was a long time ago and a play thru far away. That line seems familiar.
Never had any buddy shoot at me, nor ambush me.

On my PS3 plays through, each tape played differently when I picked it up.
ah, the tapes... made me think too, recently. It was before the patch, I think, that I started to finally collect them all, so I got them in a short time. I too wondered wth, didn't I just hear that tape the last time? and it happened again, and again.
I also wondered, apparently I got them all now, but there are a few missing (counts from 0 (lol) to 15 I think, and there is a gap around 9-12 or so. like 2 or 3 missing. Then I remembered that Reuben asked, still in the north, before completing the Leboa part, if I had some tapes for him (which I had) so I reckon you "give" him what you got so far, and those might be the ones I'm lacking now.
But even when you give Reuben the tapes they are available for you on your notepad.
ah ok, then I seem to have missed a couple... argh! searching both Leboa and Bowa again! :-\ ;)
Wait...
Leboa - 8 tapes (1 for each sector except Pala) + the one Reuben gives you at the beginning (must be tape nº 0)
Bowa - 8 tapes (1 for each sector except SE).
Gives you 17 tapes - from 0 to 16
Oh well... I just saw you said 16 tapes (from 0 to 15)... you must be one tape short then :(
i haven't looked into it since, but I know I've got a gap in the middle. thanks for your efforts :-X , it's not really a riddle, more likely I simply missed a few. Will search both areas again... then tell you if I still have a gap.
I know what you mean... I am finishing my diamond hunting and just realised I'm in the same situation as you... 15 tapes, 2 to go :(
And the worst part is that they don't show up in the in-game map, so you don't know which one is missing :'(
exactly ;D
I tried using those maps of D_B as a desktop background, then went from left to right, up to down, all the time across the country. I was quite sure I did it systematically... still, somehow managed to skip a couple.
=============HORROR=============
Had 15 tapes.
Found another one... STILL WITH 15 tapes according to my notepad :'(
ROFL - I bloody know that!! as if the game was cheating on us!
I splitted this talk about the Jackal Tapes from this topic (http://openworldgames.org/owg/forums/index.php?topic=28.0) because I believe we better discuss it here ;)
================================================
So... now I'm stuck... did the mission where you meet Reuben at Mike's, but he didn't ask for any aditional tapes. I'm supposed to meet him at the airstrip now (can't remember exactly what comes next, but I'm pretty sure I'm about to begin the Heart of Darkness)
Man... think I'll re-check all tapes location with D_B's maps to be sure I got them all :'(
Just got 1,000 diamonds, bought everything there is to buy, scouted all GP and unlocked all safehouses (which I didn't on my 1st playthrough)... can't leave with that doubt :(
:-X ;D Only here at OWG we have a real Moedrator helping a moderator ;) cheers
You're welcome... :-X
Well, I'm stuck on 10 tapes no matter how many I pick up in Bowa. They all play the same message and don't add to my total.
That said, I ran into some major glitches I'm going to start another thread about :D
I'm not liking the sound of this 1.03 patch.
I haven't tried much SP since i got into the online part of FC2.
I was thinking of starting a new SP, but if its going to be incomplete, maybe not.
The tape issue is the only major flaw that I've noticed on the PS3 end of things - have not had enough time with the PC version to really make a determination.
I didn't install the new patch, but have the tapes glitch, so I don't think the patch has something to do with it :(

:o How can that be?
We've all played a few times through and its never came up before.
4+ times I've been through my checklist, I'd have noticed!
edit:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWv53OJ-ydI
I wasn't collecting all tapes before, so if it did happen, I may not have noticed :(
But I'm 100% sure I didn't install the new patch (afraid of new bugs ::)) and my gaming PC is not connected to the net, so no auto updates too.
I'll see if I can get some time on the PC today and check for Jackal tapes (if Guns of Juarez is not in the store).
My PC is connected to the 'net and does all updates, plus I installed patch v1.03
I was never into collecting all tapes until now, so I can't really tell.
Good news and bad...
I just collected 3 Jackal tapes, each one of them unique: Infamy, Smuggling, and Circulation (that's the good news). Below is what I used to collect these tapes:
- One of Art's saved games started before v1.03 patch install
- The Fortunes Pack is installed
- Patch 1.03
- Vista64, SP2
The bad news - no explanation for why the Jackal tape glitch occurs on my PS3.
I've noticed the last few J tapes all play the tired kid message as well. I don't recall this earlier on in the game, before the 1.03 patch auto updated whilst i was roughly 50% into the game.
i guess i won't know for sure until playthru *6. ;)
wierd....
at 27% (about to kill Gakumba), got all 9 jackal, all 3 predecessor tapes from first act and they are all playing correctly. will let you know if get the same glitch when i hit act2 later tonight.

I didn't start having trouble with the tape until act2. The P-Tapes are ok I think, just having issue with the J-Tapes.
why the heck did they use audio tapes in the first place? All tape recordings plus one or two live execution vids would have fit on one proper disc, and done! ;D
Interesting observation - was playing the PS3 this morning on an earlier saved game and picked up a Jackal tape. Expected to hear the same worn out story about the kid with the shotgun in his lap when lo and behold - a different tape played. What I don't remember is exactly when the game I'm playing was saved. In any case, the corrupt Jackal tape issue that was plaguing me for a long time has now resolved itself.
I figured it out guys! Seems that the tapes repeating themselves only happens on a game that had the 1.03 patch installed part way through. Start a new game and it should be fine. It's only when you get a tape, install the patch and get another one that this glitch happens. Could be wrong but that's what happened so far...
Good one, man! :-X
Makes perfect sense as to why the tapes started working again on a prior save (one before 1.03)
oh yes... sounds likely :-X
Nope, when I got my PC version it DL'd the 1.03 patch when I started it. Started having the J-Tape issue in Act II.
Sorry :(
have (any of) you tried playing back the tapes? I think mine play correctly if I select them from the menu, despite of the glitch.
I have, but I did not check the tapes from the menu before they started working again on the PS3. However, as I mentioned (I think I did) I did not have the tape issue when I started collecting them on the PC despite v1.03

I picked up 6 more tapes after #10, but none were added to the list. Of course they all played the same message :D
Yes, they play correctly from the menu, but they also played correctly when I collected them.
so thats 1 all , so far. and no word from Ubi about fixing it yet. will keep score on this one (just for fun)
I just collected another Jackal tape on the PS3 this morning - I previously reported that the game was playing the same shotgun tape repeatedly. For some reason, I now have 7 Jackal tapes, and all of them played properly. What I don't know is why the darned thing is working now, when it was not working for several other games.
As an interesting aside, the predecessor missions are not showing up at all any more - the Jackal tapes w@&k, and the predecessor tapes do not... welcome to the strange world of FC2! ;)
How many play-throughs have you so far... 10? I think you're just wearing that game out ;D
My goodness, I stopped counting when I was at around 10 or so. These days I usually start with something around 4-20% or so and do different things - that's how I learned about the Goka bridge collapse. Sometimes I do buddy missions, sometimes just the main ones.
Today, I just ended the Leboa map in Mike's bar, and I ensured the death of all the buddies by filling Mike's with IEDs. Just before the mercs finally killed me, I looked around and saw that all buddies were dead - now on to Bowa, and the final chapter to see what happens at the Landing Zone.
PZ, check again - in your notebook under "buddies" - are they really dead or just "missing"? I ask because I had only Michele left at Mike's, and shot her personally in the head. Afterwards, at Bowa, I noticed she went just "missing" (block of wood for a head perhaps).
I'll check - would be strange to see their dead bodies at Mike's and then see them listed as missing. I've done something like this before, but I couldn't get the last one. Then at the LZ, there was only the one buddy to torment me - should be interesting to see what happens this time.
I only had two times at Mike's. The first time I was busy to keep all my buddies alive, the second time I had already finished everyone off before that showdown, and "killed" the only one and last, Michele, who miraculously survived and showed up in the landing zone.
Just to see what happens, I started a new game completely from scratch on the PS3 yesterday and am now collecting Jackal tapes. On prior plays through, once I collect 7 tapes, they become "stuck" on the kid with a shotgun routine. I'm only up to 3 tapes on the PC so I don't know if I'm stuck there as well.

Just like PZ I started a new game and I´ve have the same problem with the tapes as before. After collecting 7 tapes they get stuck on the kid with a shotgun. I missed tape number 7 in Leboa before gooing to Bowa, don´t know if that has any effect on this issue.

Dang it, I just went to Bowa on this play through and did not collect all 7 either. At least I have a fresh 27% save I can go back to.
This is really strange :D When I left Leboa I had 9 Jackal tapes and the 10th one (near safe house at old ranger station sw sefapane) stuck me with the kid with the shotgun....so are there 16 or 17 tapes total? I'd found 16 on my 2nd play on the 360, so I thought there were 8 on each map....go figure ;D
I have no idea ;D All I remember is that I tried to collect all of them only once. And then I noticed I had a gap in the count, as if one or two were missing in the middle. I found that particularly strange since I had used D_B's downloaded map and systematically searched both Leboa and Bowa.
Well, it's 17 for sure....8 on each map + the one Rueben gives you in the beginning. I keep forgetting the first one is #0, but I left Leboa with 0-9 which would be 10 ;D
In the Prima guide, "stealing boots" is listed as #9, but I have it as #10....... :D
Guess I'll run an earlier save and see what I can find.....anyone remember "They're comming to take me away HaHa" ;D
More bad news regarding the Jackal tapes on the PS3 - started a brand new game some time ago hoping that a fresh start would fix the tape issue - it did not.
I collected 4 tapes in Leboa: 00, 01, 02, 03 after which the tape number jumped to 09, skipping all the tapes between. You guessed it, tape 09 is the kid with the shotgun recording, so it looks like the Jackal tape issue is present in v1.04 patch for the PS3.
never had an issue with the tapes on my 360, however it has never been connected to the 'net so I'm running the original unpatched version....if there were patches for 360.
I'll be switching from satellite ISP to Charter HSI next week, maybe then I'll get the 360 hooked up :)
It is interesting to note that with each subsequent update, my copies of FC2 seem to have problems associated with them. Like you, my original FC2 installation did not have any problems that I encountered.
Guess I wasn't paying much attention to the tape numbering system. This is what screwed me up>
1 00.Infamy
2 01.Smuggling .....now the P-Tapes just go>
1 The Moroccan
At least I got this settled in my own head, and I gave up on the glitches..... ??? ;D
Hello OWG! first post here, I am an avid FC2 single player and have just recently started playing multi on DK Jackal server.
I too have had the same problem with the Jackal tapes getting stuck on tape #9 (kid & boots) playback. At first I thought that the 1.03 patch in the middle of my game caused the issue, but you guys seem to have disproven that theory.
My other theory is that for some reason in 1.03, if you don't hand over the act 1 tapes to Ruben at the bar prior to going to the south map, then the tapes get stuck on #9. I've started a new game with Xianyong but it's gonna be awhile before I can test this theory...do any of you guys have save games that could be used to test this?
Thanks, and cheers, FC2 is a great game with perhaps the most replayability of any single player game I have tried yet.
Hello Burawura and welcome to OWG!!

You are absolutely right... we have members on their 15th or so playthrough and still want more ;D ;D ;D
As for the savegames, check our download section. (http://openworldgames.org/owg/forums/index.php?action=downloads;cat=3) We have great contributions of our members there.
Cheers!
Hello Burawura, nice you made it to our site - welcome, mate :)
What you need seems to be a savegame with all tapes of Leboa but before entering Bowa. I reckon you're going to hand over all tapes and move on, and the next tape in Bowa should lift the curse? :)
I never much cared of those tapes, so I have neither a savegame to upload nor to test it on my machine. At least I don't know about it... there are more than thousand savegames on my PC lol
Anyone who does not upload a suitable savegame, fancy testing Burawura's theory or telling us about your experience? :)
That's an interesting thought - if we had a saved game that was beyond the kid with the shotgun tape, would the glitch still be manifested. I don't think I have one, but I'll check.
Good to see another avid FC2 player Burawura - I hope you find many useful tips that will stimulate further adventures. Keep posting your adventures - personally, I like reading everyone's adventures even if they are similar to ones that others have posted. I guess that the new posts do something to stimulate fond memories that might trigger additional thoughts and comments. Welcome to OWG :-X

Now it hit me, too. First tape in Bowa on that isle where you get on the barge, boot tape. Next tape near Weelegol, didn't add to my list but played the boot story. :D
By the way, I got all 9 tapes in Leboa, and handed them over, then went on with the story.

I wonder if Ubi will ever bother with another patch?
Nah... over a year after release and with other big titles hitting the stores?
Very unlikely!
Doesn't really look like it. Creating a patch for the tapes alone would be nice though :) Maybe include the DLC... for free. ;D
The Jackal tape glitch is very annoying; it is the reason I have never been able to collect all of the tapes. :-\
Same here. When I could have, I wouldn't, and when I wanted, I couldn't. Well, I did pick them all up, but they never showed on the list and always played that boot theme. Gah.
Another thing to talk to Ubisoft about. :P
Already marked ;)
This problem / glitch with the tapes seems to be widespread, spent a bit of time hunting around the net to see if any one had a solution but all could find was other gamers reporting the same issue.
My memory is not perfect but I'm certain that before either patch 1.02 or 1.03 the audio was as it should be, and not just tape #10 over and over again. Even went so far as to un-install then re-install it but it automatically updated itself to 1.03 >:( .
Going to check it out on a friends PS3 this weekend incase its a universal cock up by Ubisoft, or just PC related.
However I did find one gem during my search - the link below has ALL 17 tapes on it, so if you want to hear them you can.
http://reubenblog.typepad.com/ (http://reubenblog.typepad.com/)
ps- after listening to them it turns out my memory is not that bad as I have heard some of them before :-X
I've the same experience - it was working perfectly on both PS3 and PC for me before the updates. After the patch was applied, it was broken on both platforms for me.
Figured you had the same issue PZ, saw your post and OWG link on one of the forums was searching through. Think DKM2 was there too. :)
Probably some time ago - I've not been visiting other boards much because the membership here is probably the most knowledgeable on the Internet - no need to go elsewhere when the solution is usually in our own back yard (at least with issues that we have the potential of fixing on our own).

I'm pretty sure this was also my experience.
The most recent patch broke it, if I remember correctly.
I believe so, too.

The culprit is definitely patch 1.03.
I uninstalled then reinstalled FC2 and patch 1.02. (and remembering to quit the auto-updater when launching the game - not found a way to disable that yet).
Loaded up the Andre 42% save, headed south. First tape was the one we have all got stuck on. Second tape was the next tape in the sequence. Hurrah!
Here is a link for patch 1.02 for those with 1.03 who want to un/re-install it.

Use a desktop shortcut to the farcry2.exe and launch that instead. If it is possible during installation to do that... I can't remember if the installation process already checked for updates.
The shortcut would look somewhat like this
"HD:\yourfolders\Far Cry 2\bin\farcry2.exe"
Unfortunately, you can't do this with the Steam version of the game. :-\
