Title: Where's my payment?!?!
Post by: JRD on February 11, 2010, 04:32:22 PM
Well... this is a first time to me...

Assassination of a moving target NE of Bowa.
Took the bus as it would leave me right on the spot to ambush the target... As I got there I heard the GLAT that patrols the road approaching from west. Before they could blast me I sent an explosive arrow on them... right at that time the convoy escorting the target appeared from east... needless to say a huge firefight ensued. I missed another arrow on the front AT, but they crashed at the smoldering carcass of the GLAT and hopped off to shoot at me. The jeep with the target disappeared in the distance. I quickly dispatched the two guys at the front AT and the other two of the back AT who, by then, were drilling me up.
As soon as my beloved Dragunov finished its speech I rushed to grab one AT and give chase to the now lonely target... Before I could even start the engine I got a "Mission Complete" message... but a quick look at my pocket revealed only two diamonds...
...
...
WHERE ARE MY ROCKS, MISTERIOUS VOICE?  >:(

The worst thing is that I don't even know whose knees I should break this time  :(

Geez mate, only 2 rocks? You got dudded on that mission >:( That's a genuine weirdie ::)

Funny you should bring this up though, I had an interesting experience two days ago, doing that very same mission. In my case, I got up on the rocks behind the Weapon Shop with a Mac, a Dragunov and an RPG. As the convoy approached from the east, I sniped the gunner off the lead AT, then fired an RPG at the Jeep, but missed it. By then, the gunnerless AT pulled up under the rocks and I got into a firefight with the driver, during which time the target and remaining AT got away up the road. After dealing with the driver, I thought, "what the hell, I'll just get back up on the rocks and wait for them to come around again". So I got up onto the rocks again just in time to see the remaining two vehicles disappear around the bend in the distance. A few seconds later I got a "Mission Complete" message (?), and I ran up the road on foot to see what the story was. Turns out they ran into the patrolling GLAT, and a merc war had ensued. The Jeep was on its side in the bush along with the guard AT, the GLAT was abandonded in the roadway and a merc and the target guy were dead on the road. A few surviving mercs were still poking around and I ended up getting into an argument with them.

This was a new one on me, as I'd always thought that: a) the GLAT patrol wasn't around during that mission, and b) the mercs in that area were all on the same side. Wrong on both counts.

I think though that I actually got paid the correct amount, but I'm not sure - I was too busy being confused to notice what went into my account.

Maybe the mercs are even dumber than we first thought - maybe the GLAT mercs didn't recognize the convoy because there was one vehicle missing and attacked them.  Naturally, the mysterious stranger wouldn't think that full payment was in order (because a dumb merc did the job), but that the time you spent was worth something, ergo the two diamonds (what a cheapskate).  ;D

The two rocks is what I already had with me when I took the job!!
I had just been to the arms shop and purchased a few upgrades, leaving me with small change in my pockets.
I never got any rock in payment...  :(
I realised that cos I was actually doing that mission to buy new weapons/upgrades and as I got the "Mission complete" message I didn't hear that clingclingcling

Sounds like what I described in the infinite arms dealer missions (http://openworldgames.org/owg/forums/index.php?topic=1313.0) topic. What happened to me was, I got the same job offer again. I didn't pay attention to whether or not I got paid, but I believe I got payed once I did it properly (ending the endless routine).

Another "wouldn't it be cool" thought....

You have one, maybe two chances (depending on difficulty setting) to get those roving assassination missions, then instead of following the same predicable route, they take off like their a$$ is on fire. You then have to chase them down to get your loot.

Now that would be cool. Maybe even on the highest difficulty setting, they don't ever use a standard predictable route, but can appear anywhere on the map and move along any path.

Then after you kill them, you have to search the wreckage/bodies for the diamonds instead of them "magically" appearing in your inventory. I mean, what is there, some kind of electronic diamond fund transfer going on?

One can only dream......

I've had this bug happen before. I suddenly got 'Mission Complete' while waiting for the convey to come. I didn't get my diamonds, so I reloaded and hunted down the convoy myself. I got the diamonds, that time. :)

Just ran this mission and got stiffed twice  >:( Here's how they went down>>>

1] Arrived at the bus stop just as the convoy was going by. I guess the rear AT saw me so they stopped and I took'em out and got the mission accomplished with no payment....since I'd saved when arriving I restarted>

2] This time the rear patrol was already on foot, and once again I took them out, again receiving mission acc. I then headed on foot toward the armory and ran into 2 mercs on foot, and again dispatched them...don't know if they were convoy guards or ATGL mercs....going down the road I notice a line of dead wildebeast in the road and an empty AT just past the 'Y'. It's then I start getting shot by the suit WTF? So take him down and still no pay  :D

3] This time I get smart and instead of taking out the rear patrol mercs I back out and head up the hill...while they're beating the brush looking for me I scan the area and see the suit running toward the bus stop from the armory...I tag him and cha-ching mission accomplished and diamonds increase from 67 to 82  ;D ...if you thought the story ended there, guess again  :) I still had to take out the patrol and while doing that the ATGL spotted me and promptly ran me down, fortunatly Andre was there to bail me out. Still had plenty of mop up to do and Andre got tagged and popped smoke...I healed him and finished off 2 more mercs. Took a walk down to the armory and saw the Jeep; when I got close I could see the Jeep was stuck on top of a wildebeast  ;D

This was one crazy/fun mission  8)

PS: This was with the unpatched V1.00

Nice story, KingRat :) I've once speared a wildebeest with my buggy and I drove around with it for miles  ;D

If it wasn't such a hassle, I'd downgrade to patch 1.02 instead of 1.03, but I can't be bothered right now. There is one advantage you get from 1.03 though, an official no-cd patch.

you mention something... w7. I'll have to get and install that, soon. Planning a dual-boot system, and that would allow me to install FC2 on w7... I'll need to prevent FC2 from patching... firewall might help :)

Thanks  :) DLC is working fine. Both FC2 installs are on Win7 upgrades; one from XP (used Laplinks PCMover to save the apps) and one Vista. Running v1.00 on the w7/vista box....ran the fc2.exe (made shortcut) from the bin so it bypassed the update launcher...

v1.00 has been running fine while I've been having lockups with v1.03....think my gtx275 is crapping out  >:(

Seems a lot of weird things happen on this mission. If you recall, it's the one I wrote about a while ago, that started the whole "journal entry" thing. In my case, a wildebeest was involved, then the convoy jeep carrying the target ran into a tree and I got the credit and the diamonds for that though. No need to reload.

Yay! Finally got one of these:

Warning: this topic has not been posted in for at least 120 days.
Unless you're sure you want to reply, please consider starting a new topic.

(Ahem) Anyway...

I jumped back into FC2 last night after a hiatus of almost a couple of months. Man, I still love this game! I picked up where I last left off, which just happened to be the very mission this thread was started about, i.e. cell tower mission to bump off the travelling suit in NE Bowa.

So there I was, in the Weapon Shop armoury alongside the road that the convoy takes, when I hear the local patrolling GLAT going past. A quick look at the map revealed that the convoy was fast approaching from the opposite direction. Smelling a merc war in the offing, I ran outside and up into the rocks behind the Weapon Shop, which affords a great view down the road, and settled in to watch the show.

They didn't disappoint. That ran into each other right outside the Bus Stop, and immediately, three ATs and a Jeep were playing dodgem cars with each other. The GLAT was too close to the others to use its GL, so the dude got out and said "Hur-huurrrgh" as he promptly got squished between two other vehicles. Then the gunners from the other two ATs got out and began shooting at the GLAT driver while the other drivers kept up their game of close-quarters vehicular tag. Finally, everyone got out of their vehicles for a roadside téte-a-téte and to exchange some lead pleasantries. Three of them were now ganging up on the poor lone GLAT driver, but the other three apparently decided they'd had enough mayhem for one night and began running away in three different directions. And who should be running up the middle of the road, straight towards my position, than the dirtbag I was contracted to whack, evidently seeking the perceived shelter of the Weapon Shop. All I had to do was wait until he delivered himself, then let him have it with a few Desert Eagle rounds. I never even needed the Dragunov or the RPG launcher that I'd brought with me - at least, not for the suit. In the meantime, the GLAT driver had gotten out of his AT and had done an admirable job of eliminating his three remaining attackers and was just standing there looking pleased with himself, until a Dragunov round delivered from the rocks ended his self-congratulatory reverie. As soon as I fired, the two remaining runners curtailed their panicked flight to make long-distance targets of themselves while they stood around thinking, "Gee, what was that?" Two Dragunov barks later, they briefly knew, as one fell among some rocks and the other dropped amongst the water buffaloes.

All in all, it was a fun welcome back to Africa ;D

Hey, Fragger, mind uploading that save game somewhere? I want to see if I can get the same thing to happen. If it works and I can repeat it, I may make a video eventually. Looks like a job for IgnoreAI as well, to really get in the action to see what's going on.

Usually, from what I've seen, when a convoy mission is activated, the local road patrol goes on vacation to avoid this sort of thing, then comes back after you've completed the mission and the area resets. I've never seen, that I noticed, a road patrol and a convoy in the same place.

I did, more than once, always the same location: North Bowa, Outpost, arms dealer convoy passing through there, and near the Airfield in Bowa. A couple of times it resulted in the place burning down to the ground, a patrol blowing up, and the big truck or its escort disappearing. When the escort disappeared, I could repeat the arms dealer mission. See "infinite arms dealer convoy missions (http://openworldgames.org/owg/forums/index.php?topic=1313.msg20779#msg20779)" topic :)

@D_B: Sorry mate, I overwrote that save already after I completed the mish :D But I've had the convoy run into the patrolling GLAT on several occasions in the past when playing that mission. To the best of my knowledge, that's the only convoy-type mission where the local patrol remains in business - without a glitch being involved, that is. Once I was waiting in those same rocks behind the Weapon Shop and the red circle showed the convoy to be still some distance away and out of sight, when the circle winked out and I got a "Mission Completed" message. When I went to where I'd last seen the circle I found the vehicles abandoned, including the GLAT. The two groups had apparently run into each other there (it was near the road fork at the Crash Site) and even though there were still a couple of mercs hanging around, there were no bodies anywhere that I could see. They must have spontaneously disappeared.

Since this mission doesn't involve a Weapon Shop convoy, maybe the absent-AT rule doesn't apply. I'm not 100% sure if the GLAT is present in this mission every time or not, but I think it probably is. Note that this is the only cell tower mission in Bowa where the target is in a convoy, and it's the only such mission that sticks to main roads. The only other cell tower convoy mission is that one that goes around the Airfield in Leboa, but it doesn't follow any roads, so there are no ATs for that convoy to run into, and so you don't see any merc wars happening in that mish. I think these are the only two cell tower missions in the game where the target is in a convoy.

Maybe next time you (or I, or anybody that's curious) take on the Bowa mission, try hanging out in the Weapon Shop for a while and see what happens. Keep your map out, and if you hear a vehicle going past, you'll be able to tell from the map whether it's the convoy or the GLAT. They travel in opposite directions around the same loop of road, so they have to meet at some point, one would think.

Sorry I didn't save that game, I just didn't think of it ::)

Some good info there fragger.  :-X

Definitely some things I am going to keep in mind the next time I get that mission.  First I'll make a save once the mission is assigned and then I'll play it out repeatedly to try to catch the fun.

I usually draw all of my 2nd game half cell missions from the cell tower North of Dogon Sediko.  From there I have rapid access to the majority of the Target of Opportunity missions and literally puts me just seconds away from that loop of road shared by the convoy and GLAT.

Usually I swoop in so fast I guess I've never given the game the chance to move events forward naturally and yeah, the AT patrols clockwise and the convoy is moving counter that.

You got me looking forward to it fragger.  :)

No big Fragger, just a thought. I don't think I've done that mission yet in this play through, so I'll keep an eye out this time. I'm like Mandru, I usually don't let them hang around for too long before I'm done with them and on to the next thing.

Just a little more on this one, and getting back to JRD's original post...

Evidently, you'll only get paid for this mish if you personally take out the target. I did this one again yesterday, and I let the merc war happen on the road again. This time though, the GLAT guys took out the mark instead of myself, and even though I got the "Mission Completed" message, I didn't get any diamonds for it. So it appears that if you don't personally take out the suit yourself, you won't get any dough for it, defunct though said suit may be.
Title: Re: Where's my payment?!?!
Post by: Dweller_Benthos on August 17, 2010, 01:26:16 PM
One time I did a mission and the jeep carrying the suit crashed into a tree and I'm pretty sure I got the diamonds for that one.
Title: Re: Where's my payment?!?!
Post by: JRD on August 18, 2010, 01:16:40 AM
So it works as if the game "knows" if you caused th target`s death or if someone else did it. Whatever happens that send him to the other life but is caused by you - fire, car crash... anything other than a direct hit will grant you the diamonds.

But back to my first post, the target never actually died... at least not that I`m aware! He disappeared from where I was exchanging pleasantries with his colleagues and I got the mission accomplished message! No body at all!

Seems like it counts as a mission complete because he vanished from the map but since no corpse is there, I get no payment either!  :-(

Title: Re: Where's my payment?!?!
Post by: PZ on August 18, 2010, 07:54:37 AM
I liken it to something similar I experienced in Red Dead Redemption - a mission where I needed to kill someone, but because I did it in an unorthodox way, the target kept appearing after his death and I was able to gain several thousand dollars before I triggered the next mission.  In other words, something unexpected that the programmers might not have anticipated, or perhaps just a momentary glitch.
Title: Re: Where's my payment?!?!
Post by: JRD on August 18, 2010, 08:37:32 AM
Indeed... you are not supposed to chase your target. You either kill him or die trying. Once he escapes and there is nothing else for you to do (kill?) the game doesn`t know what to do!
Title: Re: Where's my payment?!?!
Post by: fragger on August 19, 2010, 06:01:54 AM
That's true. I guess that with fairly complex games like FC2 or RDR, it must be quite difficult for the programmers to foresee all ends, as it were. Even though that's what beta-testers are ostensibly for. Like proof-reading a book, there's bound to something that escapes scrutiny on occasion.
Title: Re: Where's my payment?!?!

I suspect that game developers would greatly benefit from having OWG members do their beta testing  ;)

Where do I sign?  >:D

It also got me thinking... what we call Artificial Intelligence is, in fact, just a bunch of pre programmed reactions of as many actions as devs and beta testers can come up with. If you, by any chance, do anything that escapes scrutiny on occasion - like fragger said - there's no Intelligence backing up. The game, the machine, just can't evaluate a new/unpredicted situation and decide what to do next!

It's always an If-Then-Else situation.

One of my favorite error traps incorporated into a game was in either the first or second game of the original  HalfLife series.

There was one spot in the game where you met up with Barney, Black Mesa's friendly security guard who was originally nameless but called Barney by the players because of his resemblance to the goofy deputy Barney Fife from the Andy Griffith show and the name stuck by way of the developers in the HL2 series.

He was hiding in an air conditioning shaft, too terrified to go on and wishes you well as you leave him and proceed on in to a portion of the game that starts out by leaving the air ducts and breaking into an underground parking complex where a huge cross dimensional horror is ripping things up.  You have to get the monster outside and call down what I believe was a geosynchronous satellite based laser beam strike from a cryptic control panel on a roof top perch to move on through the game.

The error trap occurred when you left Barney and dropped down through an open air duct  triggering the next area to be loaded for play.  If you used the cheat Noclip to get back up into the ventilation system and tried to speak to Barney again instead of a response from him (he just glared at you) the system would print what I'm sure was an error message.

Spoiler
That message displayed in the corner of the screen was simply "You're evil."

hehe, nice error message  :-D

Reminds me of a game (not sure, perhaps DukeNukem3D) when you somehow managed to climb into an area that didn't belong to the actual designated map, you'd see a pop-up along the lines of "you're not supposed to be here."  :)

That the funny part of the story - years ago we purchased our kids (now adults) a children's cookie oven that we recently found as we were going through old things.  This is one of those press type machines that is much like a panini maker without the grill ridges.  Laughingly my wife and I remarked to each other that we should bring it to the office to make cookies, so we tried it at home.  It worked perfectly - you open the lid, put in 4 balls of dough, close the lid and "bake" for 10 minutes.  Out come 4 perfect cookies, warm and chewy, ready to eat with a cup of espresso.

You can't purchase a kids cookie maker like this any more - because of the heat (danger) involved, and the fear of litigation, the toy makers of today will not venture into such territory.  :-()

EDIT: the other funny part of the story is that as I walked down the long hallway of the building, several of my colleagues came out of their offices and asked as they sniffed the air "is someone baking cookies?".  My office is well stocked with cookie maker, espresso machine, panini press, and of course a tiny refrigerator - now I need to find a way to make soup  :-()

JRD and fragger, are you sure you want to be part of a company whose employees purchase their kids, AND call it "funny"?

;D ;D ;D

If you keep the sales receipt, you can take them back if you don't like them :-()

fragger's comment about keeping the receipt made me remember a prank I pulled on my second son on his 6th birthday.

We were having a largish party for him. Grilling dogs and burgers, I had made a 5 gallon batch of dry ice powered root beer, there was a cake with candles and his grandparents, aunts and uncles from both my wife's and my side were in attendance.

During a slow spot in the festivities my son came over and sat with me at the picnic table and I asked him "So how do you like being six?"

"It's great!"

"Good I'm glad you're enjoying it.  I really wanted it to be fun for you because when we picked you up at the hospital when you were born they asked how many birthdays we wanted to buy for you and we were only able to afford 6.  So it's good to know that you like being six because you won't be getting any older from now on."

"What?"   ???

"Yeah, we are so poor that we could only afford to buy you 6 birthdays.  So go play and have a really good time because this will be the last party like this you'll get."

:'(  "Mommmm!" as he tore off to get the rest of the story.

Yeah, I know it was probably a bit mean and every adult there was a angry with me for freaking him out but in looking back it worked out OK.  The same son came back at 26 and confessed that his 6th birthday was the most memorable from his childhood and that year at age 6 remains crisp in his memory because he was never sure whether I was telling the truth and everyone else was just trying to comfort him for his sad fate or if I, a well known prankster, was just pulling his leg.
