The GPS is not at all like FC2, You've probably seen the zooming chevrons in the sky on some of the trailers.  They point your way to your destination or the "path" for the race, but basically they stick to the roads so it can be quite confusing until you get used to it.  It'll get you there on the roads but that isn't always the preferred or fastest route.

You can toggle on/off the GPS and it also has a compass on the top of the screen (a line across the top), and it will show differently colored lines kind of like a spot beam from the ground of challenges, liveries, or vista points to guide you to them (in free roam) - when you get "near" you get a message saying you spotted a livery or whatever.

As you drive around or in races you'll see lots of abandoned cars and trucks, old shack homes that are boarded up with boards setup for some jumps.

Like I said I'm amazed at how seamless free roaming integrates with career mode.
