Expanding on mandru's idea of a tips topic, here is the beginnings

This is not actually an in-game tip, but a link to Google Play installation of a Pipboy on your device.  I installed it on a Samsung Galaxy and the screen turns into your Pipboy.  Because it searches for your game (you need to have the Pipboy app enabled in the game), and when it finds it, your progress and complete pipboy data is available on your device.  I don't know if it will actually be useful (will try it), but the ratings are quite high.

Cool now there's an appropriate home for this.  :)

to quote from my suggestion elsewhere ( http://www.openworldgames.org/owg/forums/index.php?topic=3787.msg77837#msg77837 )

... I saw a post elsewhere that showed that when you are browsing your weapons there is a Rename Button among the options.

If you rename all of your weapons first by listing the type of ammo they use  (ie. Caliber, laser, plasma, A-Bomb etc...) and secondly its actual name the weapons list will automatically arrange them by classification grouped together next to each other in your inventory.

This makes comparing the stats of each weapon (by type) much easier.  It's also useful when choosing from among your collected weapons within a specified group when making upgrade decisions.

At least (having not been able to try this myself) I think this should be helpful.  :-\\

Thanks, mandru - I was hoping you would post here - because there were subsequent posts to your original tip, we could not split off into another topic in a seamless way  :-X

I've seen people using the Pipboy app on videos. They can access the repair / heal functions on the phone and not have to open the interface in game. Don't know if it's any faster, but it does have that cool factor going for it.

Did I see the tip here or on a video to get the dog back to the vault to get the cryolator? Either way, there it is, might be a bug they will patch later, but the dog can get into the case without it being opened. The weapon is cool, but I'm sure ammo will be in extremely short supply.

Indeed - will need to try it out.

I installed the Pip-boy app on my Samsung Galaxy and it works great.  It sits to my side and is fun to operate - you can even change weapons on the Pip-boy and watch it change on the screen.

This "Ultimate guide" appears to be good for beginners

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/fallout-4-ultimate-guide/1100-6432070/

This video shows how to use the developer's console

... and related to that, here are the console commands

This first one to a Wiki contains most if not all the commands plus instructions on how to create the text files that can give you all ammo, perks, etc.

Some of the vids for which PZ has posted links have served up some tasty tips.  The following are a few of the tidbits I've been able to glean from them so far.

You want to set up your settlements but it's a good idea to select a personal (non-settlement) home base to store essential resources early on in the game.  One video poster used the Red Rocker service station where you first encounter Dog Meat as it has essential workbenches and a lot of available junk to be scavenged laying around.

There was something about building an item at your home base (where you have the most resources established and no settlers getting under foot) then setting it down and picking it back up so it's in your inventory to be transported to a colony.  But without actually having my hands on the game I haven't worked out the advantage or need for that item manipulation.

When you are out running missions there are dropped items from the enemies that seem useless at face value but if you grab them up (I think learning to recognize essential components is the key here) and on mission completion fast travel to your home base or one of your settlements where there's the necessary workbenches.  By dropping the items on the ground near a workbench an option will appear for you to break the items down into their useful components.

There's a bug or something that will lose some of the useful elements in the scavenged items you've gathered if you try to feed collected items directly to the workbenches when constructing from your inventory.  It's an extra step but produces better results to let the more thorough colony/workbench sorting system divvy up collected item's components and store them in resources than doing it from your inventory.

Apparently each settlement maintains its own inventory of collected resources.  At some point it becomes possible to link settlements so that they can share stored resources between themselves but uncontrolled wealth and growth in your settlements can bring attacks on them.  So it might be best to hold off on linking the settlements until you've manned perimeter defensive points and equipped your settlers to be able to defend them.  Minding this detail will minimize the number of attack events and you having to break away (while out rambling around exploring) to dash back to settlements to save them.

That's good info, mandru - sounds almost like you're already playing the game!

I agree though - there is so much to see and do, one could go on playing for a long, long time.

7 secret locations in Fallout 4.  Although there are no story spoilers, this does give you the location of a few interesting areas, including one where you can get some fancy advanced power armor.

This is a mod manager put out by the Nexus - looks good because it does clean installs, allows you to choose which mods you activate, and even cleans up after itself in the event of failed installs

This guy is good - advanced base (settlement) building tips in which he shows a much better way to build treehouses, and another excellent technique in which you can build just about anywhere in your settlement, not just on the existing foundations.

This link shows you what some consider the 10 best weapons in the game and how to get them.  Definitely spoilers in telling you exactly how to find them, but the images look cool.  I like the Overseer's Guardian that delivers 175 damage - they say strong enough to take almost everything out with a single shot.

Something to look for, and a tip when doing the quest for Paladin Danse

Spoiler
I missed it, but somewhere in the building you clear of synths is a weapon that takes the junk you have in your inventory and uses that for ammo. In the bottom level where you are to kill all the synths coming your way, you can hit the rocket engine button in the control room.  The engine will spin up and kill everything in the chamber (except your companion)

Anything you can carry by picking it up (hold space on PC, don't know the console command) can be taken to a build area and scrapped. Though it's a pain to walk slow to carry some things, if you're short some rubber or steel, you can carry tires and those oxygen (or whatever) tanks pretty easy, drop them in the build area and scrap them.

Interesting. Not complete though. Just to the south west of Sanctuary there is the dark spot right near the edge of the map. Some things there, but I won't spoil it. Nothing amazing, just interesting.

If that's missing, what else is? I know it's still early, so I'm sure things will be added. I'm also not impressed with the quality, it seems the map tiles don't line up. And what's with that entire area on the bottom left that hangs outside the main map? Is that really there?

I also noticed there are local maps on the Pip-boy for a lot of places, if not the entire map, now that level of detail would be something.

I've not seen any mapper on the Internet like D_B!

LOL, thanks guys. I can't imagine, though, trying to put together a map for this game. Anything would have to be online-based, it would just be too much to do otherwise. But having the extra zoom level of the local maps from the Pip-boy would be pretty cool. You could exactly place item icons then, but I won't be doing it, hehe. I mean, I want to actually play the game at some point.
