Title: FC3: Questions
Post by: PZ on December 09, 2012, 02:27:34 PM
Has anyone used the vehicle repair torch?  Is it correct that it occupies a weapon slot?

I have and yes, it is true. You can set stuff alight with it (it is even possible to burn enemies to death with it, there is an achievement for that)  :)

That sounds kind of cool  :-X

On another note, how did you successfully hunt sharks?

Cheers, Jim  :-D

PZ, kill sharks with anything but melee weapons :) At first I used my M700 sniper, then the MS16 assault rifle and for the man eater shark I had to use the bow. Best to do it when they're either near the shore or when you're on a boat. Careful when skinning those bastards.. they usually have friends.. might as well take them out, too  :-()

I was working one of the outposts on the northern shore of the island and waded into the water to get behind a big rock.  Shark bit me, but then swam away  :-()

I used this excellent method and quickly dispatched a couple of sharks which allowed me to add the 4th weapon slot, which I promptly filled with the flamethrower.  ;)

Looking like my Checklist going to be about 12 pages, this game is big, lots to do.

but my question, there is a side mission called Wanted: Dead (from the bulletin boards)
it seems as though when you activate this, a cleared outpost becomes active again.
Has anybody tried this?
Title: Re: FC3: Questions

I did a few of those missions but in my game the outposts stayed friendly (at least after the mission).

Sounds like it will be an excellent checklist DKM2  :-X

I've not done any of the "wanted" side missions, but it would be nice if what you experienced was not a glitch - I like liberating the outposts, and would like to approach using different approaches.

Sorry to tell you, but doing an outpost's "Wanted" missions will not reset the outpost - it stays liberated.
Title: Re: FC3: Questions
Post by: PZ on December 11, 2012, 07:21:56 PM
That's too bad; I wish there was something you can do other than creating a specific save to redo outposts.  The way it is, I can only do an outpost again is if I start a new game.  Even though the spawn rate in FC2 was a bit high, it was nice to be able to go back to an area and clear it again using a different approach (stealth versus run-and-gun) or weapon choice.  I recall hitting the Rail Yard with flare gun one time, and IEDs another time.  Yet other times I just used a sniper.  Re-doing things using different methods was lots of fun for me.

Me too, I'm going to miss being able to do stuff like that. And starting a new game will mean going through a lot of scripted missions again if you want access to the entire map :-\\
Title: Re: FC3: Questions

Maybe the first of us that go through minimalistically completing the main missions until south island is available could post a saved game.  At least that would give us a chance to begin in a reasonable place.

I looked into that a little. Uploading saved games to the site may not be so straightforward with this game. It doesn't create a single saved game file in My Documents\My Games\Far Cry 3\Saved Games like FC2 did. The only indication of them that I can find is here:

<root drive>\:Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\ Ubisoft Games Launcher\savegames\ [a folder named with a great mess of letters, numbers and hyphens] \ [a folder named with a number]

For instance, on my PC the path is:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\savegames\a5282ba8-4aef-4ba9-ad0a-83c0065a15ea\46

I have six files in that directory:

Filename                                    Size
1.save                                        33KB
1.save.extendedmeta                1KB
1.save.metadata                        1KB
5.save                                        39KB
5.save.extendedmeta                1KB
5.save.metadata                        1KB

and in this directory:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\cache\ownership

I have a 1KB file called a5282ba8-4aef-4ba9-ad0a-83c0065a15ea, which you can see is the same name as the directory name above. I would assume that this file and the folder with the same name relates to my UPlay account in some way.

I also don't know what the suffixes ".metadata" and ".extendedmeta" mean but it might be something to do with the UPlay cloud. And as you can see, they're tiny files - FC2's saved game files are usually several MB in size, so you would assume that FC3's would be of a similar size. It may be that saved games in FC3 are stored internally where you can't get at them, which may be why you're only allowed three slots.

I could be wrong about all of this, but I don't know where else to look on my PC if the saves have been stored elsewhere. I can't find anything else anywhere that looks like a saved game file. It must be stored somewhere obviously, especially considering that I've been playing and saving offline.

Damn, why do they have to make these things difficult?

When I was at Orphan Point outpost, I got on a boat with a mounted machine gun and gunned down all the sharks that appeared nearby  :-D Saved myself a lot of ammo and got all the skins needed to craft whatever was required.
Will have to try out Durian's method. Didn't know that I could run over a shark with a boat! ???? Yet to kill a shark with an arrow though. Wish there was a harpoon gun in the game to kill sharks and crocs under water...

I've been doing a bit more poking around online, apparently finding the saved games is a much-queried subject.

Some claim that they reside here:

C:\ProgramData\Orbit\46\

But I have no "Orbit" directory under ProgramData. There is a directory called "Orbit" here:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\cache\orbit

but it's empty.

Others claim the game resides in the directory I mentioned earlier, the one with the path like this:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\savegames\a5282ba8-4aef-4ba9-ad0a-83c0065a15ea\46

But others have said that the game won't recognise the files there as saved games once they've been copied over. To me they don't look anywhere near big enough to be saved games anyway, they're way too small. More likely they're some sort of pointers or indexes. As to why the filenames start with "1" and "5" I don't know either. Possibly refers to autosaved and manually saved games, based on some kind of weird programming logic. It certainly isn't numerically logical.

I was earlier going to suggest that I post the files here and another PCer download them and see what happens with them, but I don't want to risk screwing up somebody else's game, which is what appears to have happened in some cases I read about. We shouldn't try anything like that until we know what we're doing :-()

In short, I don't know where the flipping saves are stored.

Why all this drama has to exist with saved games I don't know, nor why Ubi insists on restricting players to a 3-slot save system. I call that pedantic and unnecessarily obstructionist.

best I can figure out about the savegames is, if you play in online mode, your saves are saved online.

btw, I play offline, but I only have one slot avaliable, the other two are grey'd out.
Ubisoft -  :D

I guess the greyed-out save game slots are reserved for two separate "new games" aka careers.

Exactly; FC3 is like the AC series - you have a single save with the option to have two more game slots for a total of three games each with a single save.

@fragger - that's bad news about the game save.  I was hoping to be able to easily share games, but it looks like Ubi has made it difficult.

This is why I like open world games so much.  It was funny running the sharks over - you hear and feel a thump as your boat goes over them.  They sink to the bottom though so you need to be careful another shark doesn't get you while you skin the first one  :-()

Once I was diving and about to skin a shark and then another one attacked me.
After that I always use the camera to scout the area to know how many sharks there are. If there's only 1, then I just dive to skin them after running over it. If there are more than 1, I killed all of them first than diving and skinning them.

The gun-boat runs sharks over with a satisfying sound  ^-^

I think I might try the Crocodile Dundee approach next time though, grenades or C4 - trouble is they don't float up to the surface when dead...

fragger, I did it on easy but in the south I realised I had been playing on medium the gods know since when. I remember during some early missions I kept getting a message that I could adjust the difficulty level which I ignored as I already had adjusted it. However, I reset it to easy only recently.

Jim, I tried grenade-fishing with those sharks but without any luck so I shot them with various weapons and only by accident ran a shark over in a boat. Quite a bump, I must say :-D

I was doing OK on Survivor until some of the last main missions where there were sometimes crazy amounts of enemies coming at me. I was spending half the time shooting back, half the time patching myself up and half the time reloading. OK, so that's three halves, but I was one and a half times busy :-()

use your melee attack button/key to whip it out for a slash. You can get some (depending on DLC and game progress) in the melee weapon section to the very end of the list at an arms dealer or vending machine. :)

Need a bit of help in locating Amber leaves. I am all out of them and can't craft any more syringes for hunting. Does anybody know where can I find some? I had collected a few when I started playing the game, but don't remember the exact location.

Btw, if I am correct, sharks are attracted by blood and can also finish off another bleeding shark, but in this game I guess their sense of smell is weak. Else it would have been fun to kill one shark and lure the others and then finish them off all at once.  ^-^
Title: Re: FC3: Questions
Post by: Art Blade on December 13, 2012, 01:57:25 PM
all of the plants basically either grow in clusters or thinly spread but they do grow basically everywhere. The easiest way is to either walk or drive around and you'll unavoidably find loads of them. I recommend upgrading your rucksack so you can keep a sufficient amount for later crafting if your syringe kit is already full (might as well upgrade that, too) :)

And yes.. sharks in FC3 have no sense for blood at all but still, they are very fond of nibbling  :-D

You're close, PZ. After the big boss fight you:
go to sort out Vaas;
meet up again with Citra;
go see your buddies;
do a mission with that Willis guy (prepare for more racing against time there);
then you go south.

I've got a question on the skill tree.  I've noticed the skill upgrade Gunslinger Take Down has the exact same key clicks as the Knife Throw Take Down which sets off some flags of concern for me.

The Knife Throw is a stealth move and the Gunslinger is anything but stealth.  I'd be far better off making a straight take down and then using my own silenced full auto weapon to smear a nearby unsuspecting group.  I honestly don't believe for a second that a small mob of enemies will pointedly look the other way as you gun them all down one by one as shown in the tutorial video clip.  ????

Does the Gunslinger skill override the Knife Throw skill?  Is the game smart enough to recognize that you are in a stealth situation and a double kill through a silent knife flip is infinitely more desirable than to jump out guns blazing?

I am hoping that maybe the game is smart enough to know when there are times that there only two enemies immediately present and go with the Knife Toss.  Even though I have a few skill upgrades currently available I am hesitant to accept the Gunslinger Take Down skill upgrade on the off chance it will cost me a skill much more useful and suited to my style of play even if it is less flashy.

Don't worry, they just fucked up the description. Knife is fire button, Grenade is grenade button, Pistol is your aim button. So you can always decide which one to use, they always w@&k.  :)

I had the same problem and Binnatics found the solution somewhere on the net and told me. Now I tell you.  :-D

The repair tool aka blow torch actually isn't half bad when you carry it around with you. If you really want, you can limit yourself to three weapons plus repair tool. I like to have it with me when I've got quite some driving (distance) to do. Most of the times I either damage my car by running over animals (if you do in lots of 'em and big ones like bears and buffaloes you will notice, hehe) or pirates or mercs or careening down cliffs or get into firefights. None of which requires a repair tool but if you have one, it's fun  :-D
Title: Re: FC3: Questions

I've not even had the chance to equip the repair tool yet I've been so busy doing other things.  That's just one more think on my bucket list of things to do in FC3.
Title: Re: FC3: Questions

Art I double checked the tutorial for Gunslinger Take Down and it definitely says for PC play it's the LMB as opposed to the aim button is the RMB.  ???

Another question about Gunslinger.  I know with Knife Throw I enjoy that it's an automatic motion.  By any chance is Gunslinger automated the same way or do you have to individually aim each shot into the nearby group?

Title: Re: FC3: Questions
Post by: fragger on January 01, 2013, 08:21:51 PM
I think it's automated the same way as the knife one, I did it by accident once and I was so surprised that I failed to notice whether it did the aiming for me or if I just got lucky.

You can also use the blowtorch to simply set stuff on fire with, such as wooden buildings :-X

Yep, it would be nice if they burned right down or collapsed or something, even if they rebuilt themselves after you'd moved on, like the destructible structures in FC2 did.
Title: Re: FC3: Questions
Post by: Art Blade on January 02, 2013, 01:58:05 PM
mandru, you're right, the tutorial says LMB. That's precisely why I told you they fucked it up, it actually is the RMB. Believe me, I practised all those different takedown skills so I know that the knife is fire (LMB), the gun aim (RMB) and grenade the grenade key. The knife will automatically go into the nearest enemy while the gunslinger takedown will only whip out a D50 and you then have to press fire. If there is no one around, you'll just see the pistol for a short while and then throw it away, when there are more than one enemies nearby, you need to fire several times (best until it stops firing and you throw the deagle away). Oh, best turn your pistol-takedown-enemy around a bit before you take him down (try to prepare him that way) so you can see enemies before shooting them  :-D

I'm glad you got it sorted out nex.

Because I couldn't remember exactly what happened at that part of the game I went in on a new start and ran through it and yes Mash the "Space" key was what I needed to get past the point you were asking about.

Who knows, now that I've started another run I've gotten caught back up in the feel FC3's early play and may have run it out again.  :-D
Title: Re: FC3: Questions
Post by: Dweller_Benthos on March 12, 2013, 10:38:24 AM
From what I've noticed the "mash" key gets randomized each time you need to use it. I recall fighting a croc and using something like the "S" key the first time, then the next time I fought one a few minutes later, I was ready with the S key, but it came up to use the space bar. I was confused enough that the croc got the better of me.

I also had a problem with the change seat key in vehicles, I had it set to "C" but there was also something else set to "C" even though it was in another mode screen, not vehicle mode, you'd think it wouldn't matter, but it did, I had to set that other thing to something else in order for the change seat key to w@&k in a vehicle. That might be the problem nexor has, is anything else in any other key config screen also set to the same key?

I've found that the mash key to kill the pirate in the "run through the jungle" scene is always the same - for me it's "Up", which I remapped for "jump". But I know what D_B is saying about that croc mission, it's a random choice between several keys each time.

My interact key is "c" and this always works for getting in and out of vehicles - EXCEPT during the tutorial when I accompany Dennis in the car to liberate the first outpost. To get out of the car, I have to hit "e". That's the only time in the whole game I have to do that ????

Guys I've spent the past hour reading posts in trying to find how and where to sell all the junk I'm carrying   ???

Somewhere I read that when you press Esc there would be a "quick sale" function, even after I wiped my specs clean I still couldn't see it    :D

Post by: mandru on March 13, 2013, 06:18:41 AM
When you are engaged in a gun shop or at a vending machine in the upper right corner there are two buttons that toggle whether you are buying or selling then once you are in the selling mode the quick sale option will appear among options in the lower right corner of the screen.  :-X

Come to think of it those two buttons that toggle "buying or selling" really don't look much like buttons but they serve that function and looking back also gave me fits the first time I tried to figure out how to sell all the junk in my rucksack.

Plus you can use the sort button to sort all the junk to sell to the top of the list, but this is usually the default. You can sort by most expensive or most recent to find things to sell, like if you already have all the stuff crafted from tiger skins, you can sort by most expensive to find them to sell. Most skins are more expensive than the plants you need for syringes anyway.

Thanks mandru and DB, yes I've seen the sort function, had to use it a few times to get rid of some junk, will keep an eye out for the buy/sell buttons

ps:  Thanks mandru, as my mother used to say, "if it was a snake, it would have bitten you, open your eyes you little s#!t!"   :-D

Nex, you can also sell an individual item such as an animal skin or a leaf that you might not need anymore by double-clicking on it in the vendor sell screen (animal skins and leaves aren't covered by the "quick sell" function). So if you skin a crocodile for instance you can get a few bucks for it, if you really need the money that much...

I hit the print screen button on my computer to make a screen capture which then is auto filed in my FC3 screenshot folder under Documents>MyGames>Far Cry3.

Are you using the same process nex?  ????

Also if you use the camera you won't get the momentary sway from swinging a knife to have a weapon free picture and it should also give you a capture without the mini map.  :-X
Title: Re: FC3: Questions
Post by: PZ on April 25, 2013, 07:33:39 AM
I use the camera and then just crop out the edges so you don't see the camera elements.  The pics are usually so large anyway that it makes for a perfect crop that has nothing in it except what you want.  Of course, I use Irfanview to crop and then save as a 75% jpg.

Nexor, mandru does the what will w@&k for anyone without any mod. PZ can only do what he does because his camera doesn't have the little squares any more (which in a real camera are used for autofocus) and that is because he is using a mod that had them removed.

Has anyone been able to find all the relics and letters?, I'm on my second play through and attempting to find them all.
Some are very difficult to locate, one such relic is just outside Gaztown at the sharp bend in the road, there is a small drop onto some rocks and from there it's a very long vertical drop to the bottom of the cliff onto another road, I cannot find a cave or spot where the relic could be.
Title: Re: FC3: Questions
Post by: fragger on June 26, 2013, 02:01:04 AM
That's probably the toughest relic to get, nex. There's a kind of niche in the cliff face just under those rocks you mentioned - the relic is in there. The only way I've ever been able to get that one is to mark the relic as a waypoint, take a hang glider from nearby, fly it around to the waypoint and try to land in the niche. It's a tricky manoeuvre which I don't always get right. If you miss it and fall down the cliff and die, you should respawn in Gaztown so you won't have to make up too much lost ground. There are often one or two gliders just to the south-west of Gaztown, but they're not always there. After getting the relic you can base-jump out of the niche and use the wingsuit, parachuting to safety.

Some of the relics are indeed well-hidden. If you want to get them all, I advise buying the maps from the vending machines - these will show you where all relics, crates and letters are for the given area. Some are a long way inside caves. When you reach the area where the map shows one of them is located, zoom in on your map. Cave entrances are represented by small, irregularly-shaped black marks. If one of these is near the relic, that will most likely be the way in to it. Most likely - sometimes it isn't that easy...

nex: yep, I have a 100% playthrough and got them all. As fragger mentioned, it is sometimes quite a challenge but doable. My worst one was hidden in the middle of a waterfall. You know, sort of like 30 feet down, 20 feet up, and 10 feet left and right.. all waterfall. Took me a long time to finally get it.

PZ your comment reminds me that often but not restricted to places where missions have occurred there are ammo crates including LMG rounds, grenades and flame thrower fuel scattered around that never show up on any map.

One such place is near the ledge across the river from the sewage treatment plant where you rescue Ollie from the pirates most easily comes to mind.

Hmm...

I've found that there are a couple of places where the wingsuit just won't deploy. There is a cliff near Gaztown where no matter how many times I jump off, the flipping suit just won't do its thing and I end up leaving a dent in the landscape at the bottom. It's hard to describe exactly where that spot is, kind of just SE of the town. The suit never deploys there.

Hmm I encountered a problem using Ziggy's mod. Somehow the shop prices for all weapons except the signature weapons are lower. MKG costs about 9000 and before it was 13000. I play the hardcore version 2.71. I don't know why it has changed or is there some ingame feature that lowers the price? I can't remember such thing and posted my problem on the Far Cry Nexus. Very strange and annoying although the prices are not the vanilla ones.

edit:

Ok it is solved, somehow the difficulty changed although I never went into the options menu.

edit 2: Prices seem normal now althoug the MKG still costs "only" about 10000? And my Z93 sniper rifle isn't a bolt action anymore. It's semiautomatic. I wonder what happened because I didn't do anything apart from playing. Ah I see when I wanted to reinstall I installed the new version 2.71 (was playing with 2.7) which did accuracy changes on the Z93 maybe there is the problem?

I continued, but according to ziggy it is no problem.

I didn't see that it was a new version I was installing, that's why I made no backup. And you can't download older versions. But apart from that everything is fine and the Z93 is a real killer now :)

Magazine is the 5 default + 3 with the extended magazine update. ;)

Maybe you could test if it is really semiautomatic if you install the new version of Ziggy's mod (2.71) ;)

Yes Ziggy confirmed that he had to change the Z93 to semiautomatic with the new update to fix the accuracy bug.

Hey nexor, hope you enjoy the mod :)

Quote from: Art Blade on October 22, 2013, 06:17:38 AM
OK, 2.7 is better than the old one I was using.

What I haven't yet observed is the new slowed-down time, 20% slower, which means that I can expect a night to look and feel a bit more like a night rather than a dark cloud passing by.  :-D

Multiple mines (>=4) are a lot of fun. The AMR signature sniper FINALLY is back to its old glory, the first two cars blew up instantly (a few others took more than one shot) and pirates/mercs get kicked off their feet again, fun to watch them "jump" when hit  >:D

The new additional numeric weapon stats are useful. The mouse wheel now changes weapons as it should have done in the vanilla version. To switch between molotovs and grenades you need to press G or > which is a bit of a bugger here, I have G bound to throw those items so I have to use > which is a US English keyboard code so on my German keyboard I have to press SHIFT + " . " which is acceptable.

I tried the C-4, threw 4 packs and was able to detonate them one by one, even the fourth pack. Still only 3 LEDs on the remote but that doesn't matter anymore.

I found one glitch: if you ran out of mines, scrolling through your weapons with the mouse wheel until your stop at the mines selection will show your hands pretending to hold a mine.. but you're literally empty-handed.

However, definitely an improvement over the previous version.  :) :-X

I managed to get it to w@&k after several attempts, I find the vanilla version works better since I discovered pressing the R-shift button twice in quick succession.

So far there are some of the changes in ziggy's mod that I like and some not,
The performance of the AMR seem no different to the Swartz mod I've been using.  :-\\

I like the semi auto Z93, the improved climbing ability is also nice, I always tried to climb higher, that way I can play cat and mouse with the pirates   :-D

:) the explosive bow has an enormous reach and damn fast arrows, too. Best for taking out vehicles. Usually the first shot claps everyone on board, the second shot blows it up.

I get that when bumping into a patrol vehicle or the two jokers on foot, by the time I get to reload there's pirates coming from all directions leaving me no choice but to run and fight back long distance.

Oh and everytime when attacking an outpost I get lots of help from the locals, something that rarely happened before the mod, I libiraed four outposts since installing the mod, none had a caged animal either, the cage is there but no animal, one thing I did find though.....

Title: Re: FC3: Questions

I once climbed on top of such a cage (outdoors, not the safehouse :-() ) and was really surprised when that ba$t@rd clawed me from the inside. So, they don't sheathe their weapons only because they are imprisoned :) I think it likelier that the cat was misplaced but still behaved as if inside the confined space of the cage.

However, a remarkable glitch. :)
