Title: Portal2 Screenpics (spoilers)
Post by: fragger on April 22, 2011, 03:05:07 AM
I thought maybe a screenpic thread might not go astray here. Just to get things going:

I thought PZ might like this one, being an Idaho resident:

[smg id=3215 align=center width=400]

Just one of the many, many funny signs around the place:

And this (cropped):

This is GLaDOS, cut down to size at last and apparently reincarnated as Mrs. Potato Head >:D Yes, she's been transplanted into a potato, shown here stuck on one of the prongs of my Portal gun (long story). She claims to be on my side now, but I don't trust her - I have the feeling a potato would say anything to stop being a potato.

great shots fragger.  Question for you - did you catch her on the way down or find her and pick her up?  Or do you find her later on?  I couldn't catch her or find her so I've been going along without her, I wonder if I'll meet up again as part of the story (please no big spoilers) or if I missed out on something.

I'm adding spoilers to the subject of this thread due to screenies at different parts of the game. :)

You haven't missed anything space, that's all I'll say about it...

Add spoilers by all means as you see fit :) I've tried not to post screenies that give away too much, just some of the loony stuff :-() I'm not going to say anything more about GLaDOS - I probably said too much already in that screenie post, sorry :-[

Oh no problem at all about that pic.  I figured she'd show up again!  I just didn't know if I missed an opportunity to grab her when falling.  I just don't want to inhibit more pics, so I figure the spoiler is a safe thing to add.

Any more of the wacky signs you feel compelled to capture are appreciated.  So many fun ones that unless you stop to read, you will miss.  ;D

Ah yes, a place to talk about sensitive info  :-X

I think the whole GLaDOS/Wheatley double-cross scene was one of the biggest bombshells ever in a video game - and all the stuff unfolding afterwards about how those two came to be, Uhhh, what a fantastic story!!   8)

The whole potato battery/science fair thing ties in with a joke from Portal 1 about "bring you daughter to w%&k day", and in Portal 2 evolves into a commentary by Wheatley about how the lay-people's kids are obviously dumber than those of the professionals based on the fact that all the scientist's children made potato batteries and the other kids made baking soda volcanoes  :-D

My favorite part of the science fair is that, if you look closely at one of the boards, the one kid's hypothesis is "it can be done"  ^+-+

We should tell mandru about those children. Maybe he can teach those living in his neighbourhood.  :-()

Now, look at what you've done... You caused a BSOD!!!!
[smg id=3243 width=500]
Hahaha, great!!! I guess GlaDOS is kinda mad at us for poking round in here facility. Never mind. You MUST be convinced now, so I leave you here at the Screenpics topic. Imagine using your new learned tricks in these great landscapes  ^-^

See you soon in Portal 2 Coop Arena!!!!

Yeah, that's a great one. I thought the same thing at that point. How creative they made the storyline at the end, having GlaDOS thank the player for teaching her some 'human feelings' and even not 'kill' her right away. I like the guesture at the end when she rewards you with the 'sticky cubus'. Too bad I didn't take a picture of that, but that's on my wishing list for the next playthrough. Good initiative for the pic's topic!!!!

The inference from a couple of things the game is that this whole vast underground complex you're lost in is somewhere under Idaho, hence the recurring potato theme :)

Huh, I didn't get that out of it.  There are the potato batteries, and the big potato growing out of the ceiling, and the GLaDOS potato of course.  Did I miss something else about that?
Title: Re: Portal2 Screenpics (spoilers)

It's not too clear in this screenie, but look at the certificate on the wall lower left:

[smg id=3215 align=center width=400]

There's also a small plaque on the potato trophy to the left which reads "Spirit of Idaho National Potato Board for the promotion of Potato Science" followed by a date I can't make out.

Admittedly the look of the countryside where you emerge at the end suggests a midwestern plains location. Maybe someone (PZ?) can say if there is any countryside in Idaho that looks like this:

[smg id=3229 align=center width=400]

As I said, they're just inferences. I could be totally wrong, but given all the potato references, well... ;D

I like how different eras are represented during the trek through the abandoned area, becoming progressively more modern the higher up you climb, with the newer facilities built on top of the older ones. Not just technology (note the telephones) but furniture and fittings:

[smg id=3226 align=center width=400]
[smg id=3227 align=center width=400]
[smg id=3228 align=center width=400]

One of the certificates in the display case is dated 1943 (Cave Johnson, Shower Curtain Salesman of 1943) so the facility actually goes back a long way.

That really is one of the coolest parts of the game - retracing the history of the company, it's very easy to see things slowly and surely going horribly wrong ("Turns out moonrocks are pure poison, I am deathly ill").  The way it unfolds is perfect too - touring the abandoned layers, mere ghosts of what they once were, yet still functioning.

Post by: Art Blade on April 26, 2011, 09:51:37 AM
I don't know if any of you ever had the opportunity to do that in real life, meander around on your own in an old facility with furniture, books, calendars on the walls, lamps complete with light bulbs.. with all kinds of stuff still there, left there, as if abandoned in a hurry, decades ago. Well, I did. Spooky, I can tell you that  :)

@ Fragger: Nice pics  :-X You really have an eye for these things  :)

@ Art: You are making me curious... I once visited an abandoned small village somewhere in France as a child. It was not like you described, but the few houses there were all dusty ruins and somthing that happened to be a street was hardly recognizable. I remember my father was there looking for old, handblown bottles. He has quite a collection. Nowadays all bottles are blown by nachines and you can see the stripe of the mall in which they formed it. These old ones are more special, a little crooked sometimes. He did find some actually. I remember I felt quite unconfortable there.
Title: Re: Portal2 Screenpics (spoilers)
Post by: Art Blade on April 26, 2011, 01:59:35 PM
What I was referring to was an old and idle plant (factory) that used to produce marine propellers the size of a house and it had been abandoned for whatever reason parhaps back in the sixties, early seventies. I did see calendars that made me jump back when I saw the date, it must have been so shocking that by now I can't remember. The facility was locked but I had my ways (knew someone with access to it, actually "the keys" to it) and I was allowed in alone. So there I was, basically the only human being for several hundred yards, doing some kind of time travel.. the stuff had never been touched since they locked it away, so I could rummage through desks and shelves and books and whatnot.. I used to spend every day there in that hot summer many moons ago, exploring and zooming out..

:)

Me too, that would be an interesting and eerie experience. I've been in abandoned buildings but not one where all the stuff had been left behind like the one Art talked about. That would be the eerie part, sort of like everyone stepped out for lunch and never came back, or just all disappeared mid-job...

Absolutely :) They actually sparked that memory, particularly this one

[smg id=3226 align=center width=400]

I was standing in a room with about that very view in that factory, in this case the bureau complex of it, that is. Looked very much the same which is kind of spooky  :-D

Of course I had also seen the assembly bit in like one hall large as a cathedral for the cranes to lift those enormous propellers.. for some reason most of the machinery had gone, probably sold long ago.

Agree with that, I was just admiring the scenery myself a little while ago  :-X
I've never been in a totally abandoned factory myself, but Art's story did remind me of some place I used to w@&k.  During college I worked in the laboratory at a paint company.  The plant was built in two different phases, with the back part being much older than the front.  That older back part had two extra floors on it that, at the time I worked there, were used mainly for storage.  Up on the fourth floor there was an old metal shear and a pulley system used for moving big coil of sheet metal around.  I would have to go up there every once in awhile and cut metal to be painted for test samples, but outside of that there was very rarely anyone up there, so it might as well been totally abandoned.  It had a bare concrete floor, cinder block walls, and the frosted-glass crank open windows you see in old factories.  There were a few times I got a little weirded out up there by myself, just way too quiet.

all excellent stories guys!

I worked for awhile in an old manufacturing plant, very old sliding fire doors and an old barn like section, it was very cool in my opinion.  But let me tell you, the couple times that I went to turn on the alarm and one of those back doors wasn't making the right connections...

If it was winter, dark outside, and all the lights out in the warehouse/manufacturing area.  ooh boy - since it took like 15 minutes for the lights to warm up and turn on (I'm not kidding) I just had to tough it out and grab a flashlight or surrender my manhood and wait 15 minutes for the lights to turn on.

Anyways, I went for it with the flashlight. Yep, I'm that tough lol.  ;)

There is an interesting place west of Sydney, in the bush near a place called Newnes, where there are the remains of a large shale-oil refinery. Some friends and I have been out there a couple of times. It was all built out of bricks - millions of bricks - and today the bush has reclaimed about half of it as it's been sitting out there unpopulated since the 1920s. In recent years the local authorities have begun trying to preserve what's left and have prevented the bush from swallowing it completely, and they've put up signs and diagrams around the site showing what used to be what. It's hard to imagine that such a huge operation was in progress there almost a hundred years ago, with rail lines going in and out and their own brick-making works on-site, when today there are only half-collapsed walls, foundations and the occasional bit of railway track left. It's strange to think of all the noise and hubbub that must have emanated from it when you're viewing it today, surrounded by the relative silence of the bush.

Binnatics sort of beat me to this idea at the start of his cool Portal trip, but here it is anyway:

Such a nice room and comfy bed, I think I'll go back to sleep for a while...
[smg id=3244 align=center width=400]

Oh-oh... Looks like I slept in a little...

That was a good one, it took me awhile to solve it.  I reached it very late at night, and after some time staring at it and moving stuff around I gave up and went to bed.  Fresh eyes made all the difference, because the next day I fired it up and had it solved within 10 minutes.

It's funny, but that was one of the puzzles I solved very quickly. Yet I'm sure there are puzzles which other players solved quickly but in which I got stuck. Quite interesting, really - different folks approach things from different directions.

There's a similar puzzle where you have to direct a single laser beam to travel through three prisms on the floor using one reflective cube and the two portals. That one took me significantly longer to solve, and I managed to burn a hole in myself in the process.

I definitely think different players will have different rooms that seem easier/harder.  That one in the pic I got fast, but others took me much longer.  And yes I'm sure sleep deprivation could greatly affect your ability to complete the test.

come to think of it, the laser test was the last one that day and left it for starting with the next day and it suddenly was way easier than I thought it was the night before  ;D Same with the one that really got me stuck for a while. I left it in favour of some MP and started with it the next day and oh wonder, I found the solution rather quickly.  :)

nice construction :) and so free of any purpose :-D :-X

I like playing with stuff I find, too, but during my first playthrough I had a mind to quickly finish the game except the one bit when I couldn't help it but splash an entire chamber with white paint  ;D

How did you get them stacked so high on top of each other, Binnatics?

If you want to preserve the mystique of that pic by not answering the question, that's OK :-() It's a great picture, however you did it :-X

It's the first chamber of chapter 8. I thought this was the one where you could 'make your point' by not solving the test... so I took my time and played around with the cubes ;)
After a few tries I found out it was the next chamber where you could 'make your point'.  ^-^

I told him I'd set fire to them if he handed me a suitable tool for that purpose but for reasons unknown he just wouldn't comply with that.  :-D

I was just trying to replicate what you guys have done, now that I've found out how you did it ;) But I could only get five of them stacked - every time I tried to get the sixth one on top I'd klutz out and knock down what I'd built already ::)

Hats off guys - you have more patience, or dexterity, or both, than I do :-D :-X

Not to necro post or anything.... ah what the heck, let's bring back the dead.... I feel kinda left out as I couldn't get P2 working until a week ago or so, I missed out on all the fun stuff.

Anyway, for those of you who like abandoned places, here's some posts on a photography/outdoors forum I frequent. I've never been to these places, as they require "Unauthorized Access" and I left that sort of thing behind in my youth.

The coal breaker is amazing and will give Portal 2 players a reminder of huge abandoned industrial spaces, the hotel is the type of place where they just left one day and never came back. Interesting places.

hey, don't feel left out, matey  :)

Interesting links and the pics there put me in a surreal mood. As if those End Of The World films had turned real. Apart from the Adler Hotel, the pics reminded me of F.E.A.R. and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games. The hotel reminded me of Shining  :-D

Inetesting how someone can make these great pictures with just a camera. It looks all super-realistic and the first thing that I could think of (in the sanatorium te be precise) is poking round with special effects in a computer-photoshopping session.
But I guess the guy did it with using special film material and long-time diafragma and stuff.

Great. And indeed, great places. The factury could just be there in Portal 2

Yes, most of those are extreme HDR (high dynamic range) and actually, for my taste, a little over done. But they are striking, none the less.

And, to get the topic back on track, that is, Portal 2 screen caps, here's a shot of the coop bot in the single player game. This is in chamber 12, I think, of chapter 8. When Wheatley has to find an exit for the test, he rips apart the chamber next door. Just as the wall falls away, you can see a surprised bot jump quick to the exit door.

[smg id=3416]

Be sure to click to zoom so you can see it better, this is with the zoom function turned on in the game itself as well, so it's pretty far away.

hmm... seems the gallery scales it down, here's a cropped version so you can see the bot better

Wow, cool easter egg  :-X  I had no idea about that one!

I personally like the "symphony of chairs" picture in the first set - funny to think that someone stacked those up like that, and then walked away, never to return . . .
They are rather "hyper-realistic", especially the staircase photos from the old sanitarium.  The color palette in some of those shots is so extremely diverse that it almost looks like the scene can't possibly be real.  High dynamic range huh?  So I'm assuming he's capturing wavelengths that, if you had actually been standing there, would have been outside the visible spectrum?
Title: Re: Portal2 Screenpics (spoilers)

HDR is just to make the difference between shadow and light more drastic, it's not enhancing your vision.

Ah, I see.  I was wondering if maybe some of the non-visible spectrum was being converted into visible color.

He's also increasing the saturation a bit, I think. Like I said, his is a bit overdone for my taste, but from an artistic point of view, quite striking.

Agree, on both aspects. The colours reminded me of too dark screenshots (at night) in FC2 and after using "auto adjust colours" they look somewhat the same.

I always thought there was something poignant about places like abandoned hotels, especially when the furniture and fittings are still in place. It's the suggestion of vanished lives and events long since past that provides the piquancy, I guess.

Some very striking photos there, nice find Dweller :-X

I thought this was kind of funny so I'll put it up for you Portal2 players.  I've not gotten very deep into this game's topics so I hope it's not a duplication.
