Title: Just got drafted to Panau
Post by: B33 ENN on December 15, 2010, 09:53:21 PM
After JC2 came up for sale again in the current Steam promo, I decided after the positive things I read here to get it, and just played a bit to do the Destruction Frenzy achievement...   :-D

You guys are right, it looks like a lot of fun and so James Bond  8) , the grappling hook thing is so cool!   :-X

Look forward to getting into it more as I go, but I won't be playing it exclusively as I have to focus on a raft of other stuff on the list, currently trying to complete BioShock before moving onto STALKER full time... (Will add reviews for Crysis: Warhead and BioShock when I get done)

:)

Glad that you see promise in the game - it still is one of my favorites.  I agree about the grapple hook device - because the world is so large, it helps to be able to navigate a bit quicker.  I would imagine that it would become a bit tedious to have a map this large and not have a way to get around that is efficient - remember how the trolls complained about traveling in FC2?

JC2 has it all in my opinion.  One of my top games this year, and easily the one I played the most hours on. Welcom to Panau.

I've been checking STEAM on a daily basis but only got three games for great prices: Just Cause 2, Assassins Creed 2 and Spore - the three of them for less than US$ 35,00
Been waiting for Civilization V but the price was still a bit salty - US$ 35,00  :-(

I wait for these sales as the best time to load up. Had a pretty measily "collection (about 8-10) but since last month it's (ahem) "blossomed"  :o The newest games I have tried to avoid, as you said, reductions on those are not ideal yet.

Left out Fallout and Assassin's series etc. for now though, will maybe get those when i have got through a significant portion of what I've got. I did pick up Borderlands GOTY Edition as it was a good package of all the DLC's and the original game which has been out long enough now.

Well, it is Christmas and I like to think of myself as my favourite charity, and therefore a good and... "just cause"!  ^+-+

Okay, that was bad, I know...  8-X

I just started JC2 too :).

Its been fun so far, I'm having to adapt to not "aiming" with the L/Trigger.so I feel kind of exposed in firefights compared to other shooters.

The graphics are very good and the chaos thing is very reminiscent of Saboteur, I never got to finish JC1 the game kept freezing on my XBOX at one particular mission, so I gave up on it, but this one seems more refined to me :)

There doesnt seem to be a "snap to cover", I'm guessing there isnt one, or am I missing something ? Its a staple in most 3rd person shooters I play.

Are you playing on the PC?  If so, once you're done with the first play through, there are a ton of good mods that make replaying the game loads of fun.
Title: Re: Just got drafted to Panau
Post by: spaceboy on January 19, 2011, 09:57:36 AM
cool. I love JC2, the freedom of movement and height you can combine with all the fun stuff to do.

I think there is an aiming button though which brings the camera in closer.  Check the button layout.  The defaul has R2 as your trigger and R1 as your grapple.  I switched them so that I could shoot with R1. (or whatever equivalent on xbox)  Perhaps the the aiming button was R3 (push down on right stick) I honestly can't recall right now.

There is no cover system.  Consider the air as your cover, you can grapple/chute out of almost any situation.  I actualy liked it was different and didn't have cover it made you be more creative with the grapply, chute, and weapons instead of hunkering down behind something to just shoot.

Can't wait to hear more thoughts once you get into it more.

Yeah, the aiming is fine, you can even target body parts which is nice, I've only played the chopper level, where you blow up a couple of SAM Missile launchers, it was fun, the ride hanging from the chopper was a nice introduction to the verticality available in the game and the hook was very intuitive.

I'm sure they knew what they were doing, but putting a "roll" button in a shooter instead of a Snap to cover button feels weird, I can understand a roll button in a melee game like Ninja Gaiden etc, just feels weird in a shooter, maybe it will make more sense, when I progress. :)

I have the 360 version, so no mods for me, its kind of a good thing too, because otherwise I would get very bogged down in the game, BL vanilla probably took 100 hours out of my life with no mods and I havent even started the DLC ferchrissake!  :'(

I've found that rolling when the govmen are shooting at you disrupts their aim somewhat - you can keep running and gunning to maintain the fast pace, yet not be hit so often.

Because I like JC2 so much, I splurged and purchased the PC version in addition to the PS3 version.  Now that I've completed the game, I find that the only time I return to Panau is on the PC.  I guess that modding is one of my favorite aspects of a game, and the only un-modded game I play on the PC is FC2.

HOLY CRAP!  :o

Played a bit today, captured a power station (I think), there was a helicopter there so I took it for a spin, jeezuz!..... I was just riding around all morning dropping into towns and military bases, hoovering up those upgrade boxes! I got 2 full armour upgrades (healthupgrades?) before I had to stop 8)

Then I went to a military base and stole an attack chopper (infinite rockets ftw!  :-())

Now I'm torn, I know I'm going to love this, but I'm afraid I'll ignore other games that I want to complete, so I'm nearly afraid to keep playing lol :D

I really like the fact that they tuck away little secret items/upgrades, to make the areas really worth exploring, the little icon that indicates that you are near things is a bit crap, but I think otherwise it maybe too easy, so its worth living with :)

I have a question about upgrades and other things.

I have about 30 gun parts and 30 vehicle parts.

If I upgrade a pistol and I drop it for submachine guns, will the next pistol I pick up, still have the upgrades, If I dual wield, will they both be upgraded? Same question for vehicles.

Will there always be a chopper at each stronghold?

In the old game, your base always had ammo cases, I cant see any assualt ammo in my first stronghold, are the strongholds my actual bases or will I get houses as well like in FC2?

Anyway, great game :)

now that's a ringing endoresement too!

I know what you mean by ignoring games,  JC2 is what i did last summer.  over 100 hours worth!

I didn't use dropped weapons too much so I don't know if the enemies weapons will have the same upgrades you have.  You don't have safehouses, but each stronghold you take over will have some ammo cases, but perhaps not the ones you want.  The Reapers HQ has a nice supply of ammo and weapons (this is the one nearby to Carl Blaine's house).  Upgrade your grenades to carry more would be a first priority.

I think the vehicles you upgrade are mostly ones you have to buy from the Black Market (BM), except for the "tank".  Honestly I never looked too much, the upgrades just don't matter that much in battle it seems.

There is not a chopper at each stronghold but like all vehicles, it's so easy to find something to use or you can order something from the BM.  Oh, the one upgraded vehicle worth focusing on is the Rowlinson heli.  It's fast and nimble, and with weapons you can really be a threat with good manueverability to dodge SAMs.

Some people complained about the BM prices and it is kind of silly, but honestly making money is easy in the game I always had around $1M.  Also, I pretty much used whatever was around and stole weaponized vehicles from military bases.

Quick tip - Don't destroy the SAMs on stronghold takeovers.  They don't count towards 100% of the stronghold and actually become on your side once you have taken over  - you can lead enemies there and they will get shot down.

Careful, think first, then spend them: Which weapon or which part would you like to have fully upgraded? Every upgrade step will require more parts, like doubling them each step.. so don't spill them all across the shop :)

Only bases, but you're not bound to a single one. Any base that you captured for a faction will be accessible for you to resupply.

If I do missions for another faction will I lose access to the previous factions bases then?
Title: Re: Just got drafted to Panau
Post by: Art Blade on January 20, 2011, 09:39:52 AM
nope :)

By the way, there are several (many) locations where you'll find supply boxes, not even guarded. They're not only to be found in bases.
Title: Re: Just got drafted to Panau
Post by: spaceboy on January 20, 2011, 09:50:36 AM
yeah, basically you w@&k for all 3 factions.  and even though they seem they would be against each other, you will find sometimes more than one faction and yourself engaged in a battle against the militay (not missions - just something that erupted along the street or in a location).  It's great to fight along with them.  Common enemy I guess.

You can take off in a factions vehicle, but wait for one of them to jump in as a gunner.

Also, I do recommend checking out the DLC parachute thrusters.  But I almost suggest waiting on it.  They make life almost too easy.  They are great fun, but they didn't come out until I was done with the story and free roaming in "mercenary mode".  You can always just use them on occasion and not buy them all the time too I suppose (if you can resist)  They go away when you die though and you have to rebuy (another common complaint) but that's fine as it prevents you from having it be a crutch.

OK, DLC, Bullseye Assault Rifle and Ricos signature gun look nice, how does the DLC w@&k, Will I always have those weapons or do I have to keep re-buying them or something, if I drop them?

Can I upgrade them do you think?

Sorry for all the questions, If I act like a giddy little schoolgirl, .... its because I am  8-X >:D
Title: Re: Just got drafted to Panau
Post by: PZ on January 20, 2011, 11:21:22 AM
Darn, I forgot exactly how it works, but I think that you need to re-purchase the weapons if you lose them - I think they are already maxed out with upgrades (I could be mixing things up in my mind however, because I play on both platforms, and have mods installed)

Another DLC that is good is the vehicles - it contains a monster truck that has a mounted machine gun.

Spoiler
This truck is awesome - there is a mission where I'm to drive a passenger to a destination, and using the standard limo, it can be an unwieldy challenge.  Using the monster truck, I just ran the guy over  :-()
Title: Re: Just got drafted to Panau
Post by: spaceboy on January 20, 2011, 11:30:50 AM
the dlc weapons are already fully upgraded and avail for purchase in the BM.  if you lose it you have to buy again.  In fact there is no ammo to be bought, you get a new gun on every purchase.  Ammo can be salvaged of course for normal guns, but not the DLC guns.

oh - have a little fun with the "blower" gun - I forget the name, that acts like an industrial leaf blower, people, cars, etc.   I only used the DLC or special weapons for specifc missions tasks or sometimes just for fun.  I preferred the regular assault rifle and SMG as my normal loadout, but fell in love with the machine gun intead of the assualt towards the end of the game.

So, eg. The Bullseye Assault Rifle, doesnt use assault ammo?

I guess you saved me some MS points lol, It bad enough you have to actually buy the weapons in DLC and then again in the game  :o  ;D
Title: Re: Just got drafted to Panau
Post by: spaceboy on January 20, 2011, 11:50:00 AM
that one may use regular assault ammo, I don't recall.  i was talking more about the unique weapons.

I wouldn't worry about buying in-game, like I said, its so easy to make money especially if you enjoy the races, I never had trouble affording stuff I wanted - but again, I stole most of my vehicles - it does suck to buy a car or truck as they don't often last long on Panau.

But if that's a real turn-off at least get the chute thrusters, those give another level of freedom of movement that it's well worth it.

WHat I meant by too easy though is an example where originally a mission I did without them I had to get to the tops of several large structures and it made me utilize the grapple coasting technique and added some tension as I was near the ground.  Then on my 2nd (hard) playthrough I just zoomed with my thrusters from one tower to the next.  Still fun, but too easy for a 1st playthrough.

The DLC is only a few pence apparently so I'll check out the bullseye later and see for sure, cheers :)

Machine gun is my favourite, too. It is a large rifle. If maxed out, very few rounds take out a military jeep  :)
Title: Re: Just got drafted to Panau
Post by: spaceboy on January 20, 2011, 01:24:34 PM
The machine gun I refer to is not the Assault rifle, but a larger two handed gun, it doesn't unlock right away.  You'll probably need to settle for the Assault until then, which again, is quite adept itself.  The SMGs are nice in your one handed slots as you can always find ammo for them.

I wish you could have a 4th slot for a heavy weapon like a rocket launcher (or DLC quad missile launcher!) but unfortunately they take up your two handed slot.  Which is why I used them for specific missions.

Don't forget you can call in a BM drop (ew lol) during a mission or even a firefight, you just can't extract when the "heat" is on.

Same reference for me - it is unlocked quite a bit after the others.  However, if you're lucky, you can take one from a dead govman.

I saw it in the BM, its a few stages away alright :(

Whats the racing like, I tend to just use the chopper, I got one sports car for some mission and I wrapped it around a truck about 2 minutes later, the handling was bonkers and the physics, while fun, was nuttier than my grannys christmas cake!  :'(
Title: Re: Just got drafted to Panau
Post by: spaceboy on January 20, 2011, 03:19:56 PM
oh yeah, the handling is horrible, but if you adapt it is really fun.  My advice - ignore your brakes, one touch normally and you go all over the place.  Just ease off the gas as needed.  obviously city races you need to brake some, but just be careful with the brakes.

Of course, you don't have to finish the race with the car you started with, so plenty of races I wrecked my ride sending me and it flying off a bridge, then I just grappled up and stole a new one.  But you can really get used to it and finish most races with just a banged up version of what you started with.

Flying races are lots of fun, but again, the steering isn't ideal, but as you get the hang of it you can become quite the expert.  Just practice with the little cesna one.  Good transportation tip - you can start any race and then just fly off and abandon it which is a nice way to get a free plane.  There is one near the Roaches stronghold near the bay in the city.

skydive races can be tough, but don't forget you can use your chute - it doesn't have to be a pure freefall.  Here is another point where the chute thrusters are life savers/game changers.
Title: Re: Just got drafted to Panau
Post by: PZ on January 20, 2011, 03:27:31 PM
The boat races are my favorite and the free fall my least favorite.  There is at least one boat race in which the course takes your boat across a narrow isthmus and your boat flies (with you in it) through the air, James Bond-style - you must land it correctly else it is possible to sink your boat.

My second favorite of the races are the car races located throughout countryside - they are like a rally that take you on beaches, dirt roads, etc.  Also, there is an island with a race track on which you can have lots of open world fun.

lol Fiach, tell me about it.

PZ - I forgot the boat races.  Those are cool, but quite easy comparatively.  I had a real tough time with the free falls until I tried again after 50 hours or so into the game lol, by then I was much better at falling, and using my chute to slow down and get my bearings if needed.  They're quite exhilarating once you get into them.  The casino drop I recall being pretty cool.

lol - that's not really what I meant though.  rather that the boats actually handle as expected while the cars are very wonky in comparison to driving in other games. and of course the skydiving is very different and a bit hard to steer diving head first toward the pavement!

I do recall the jump you mention in that boat race - my first landing was.....unsuccessful  :)

So anyway, I went back to the first base (power station) and there were two jeeps with soldiers, they said to get in the jeep, but they didnt go anywhere, so, there was a mission on the map and I set a waypoint to it and drove off, maybe a 5km drive.

I thought, I must have been missing out on getting help from these guys and I should have spotted them for other missions maybe.

Christ the handling was soooooo frustrating, every time you kissed another vehicle or cops drove into you, you were bouncing off cars and trees so crazily, it wasn't funny.  500m from the target, i reloaded and took a chopper and did the mission myself.

Thanks god for choppers (the planes are awesome too  8)), so they more than make up for the cars, I'm really looking forward to the boats, I probably should just steal one, but I'm having too much fun to bother LOL :)

Its amazing that such a great game has such dreadful driving, easily the worst I have ever seen (and I played Alone in the Dark and liked it LOL :D).

I just played an incredibly frustrating mission, Destroy Three Satellites.

I even went to youtube in disgust, to see how to do it, after wading through the video, the poster kept getting the same frustrating results in the same places, as I did. In the end I think he called the BM for a helicopter.

I got as far as destroying one, then nearly destroyed 2, but the damn hook kept glitching on an edge at the top of #2, in the end I destroyed #2 but died in the explosion or maybe got killed by a chopper while I fell.

I then Destroyed one and a chopper attacked me, I hijacked that chopper to #2 .... well I tried to, then I noticed the chopper was flying backwards, I wasnt going to it, I was moving away, but the chopper wouldnt turn as the camera got stuck.

This was about an hour of annoying schlepping around, but maybe I missed something obvious.

Have you guys found a different way to complete this mission?

I'm also finding that I hit bases and get to 91% completeion and for the life of me I cant seem to get the last 9%, I cant see anything to pick up or blow up, even skimming the base in grids with a chopper, I'm not seeing anything, again, it feels like alot of time just being annoyed, I have played about 7 hours, about 5 were humungous fun, but about 2 hours were just plain annoying, I'm sure that will change as I get more gear and can access more items from he BM.

The guys hanging out at the entrance to the strongholds are there just for fun, in case you want to go for a joy ride and cause some mayhem - they're not directly involved in any mission, and they'll always tell you to get in.  I recall the guys you mentioned, and once I was annoyed with them so I tossed the little buggar out and got into the driver's seat, then he climbed into the gunners seat and away we went.

If I recall correctly, the satellites are in the nose of rockets located at Cape Carnival (or something like that)?  If so, then I do the mission by grappling up the towers, bypassing most of the govmen on the floors until I reach the top where I can grapple directly to the rocket and plant C4, then off to the next rocket using the grapple and chute.  Once I plant on all 3, then I set them all off simultaneously.

Spoiler
Once you get all three, there is a fourth that is taking off, and you need to quickly grapple to a runway where you'll find  an armed jet - this will allow you to shoot the rocket out of the sky

If I'm at 90-ish percent in any area, then and the parts indicator is completely blank, then it is usually a generator - when you see the small communication towers that are so tempting to shoot, don't forget that there is always a generator near it's base that is worth several percent.  I was just like you describe when I first started playing, but after I developed my personal style for rapidly navigating using the chute, everything went well.  In fact, I can get around Panau using the chute about as fast as I can using a propeller plane, and way faster than most cars.

Cheers mate :) Yeah I did grapple, but when the timer starts and the grapple glitches, well its frustrating.

I was wondering if I was missing something, but apparently not.

I find the lift easier as it removes the random factor of the grapple, I was just annoyed between the grapple glitch and the camera getting stuck when I was in the chopper, causing me a couple of re-starts.

I think I'll just leave it until I can call a chopper as I just think its a sucky time consuming mission, I can get to each of the silos in time, its just the glitches that annoyed me.

I'd say the mission takes a good 30 minutes from home base to completion, plus knowing my luck/ineptitude a few re-try's will add about 20 more minutes to it.  :D

I just dont have time to concentrate on it, until maybe later in the weekend, I was just killing a bit of time before breakfast :)

Thanks again PZ :)

That is the mission I was referring to earlier.  It is quite tough, I had to do it a few times before completing.   An easy way out is to use the DLC Chute Thrusters.  Once you get to the top of one tower you can just cruise over to the tops of the others.  So easy.  I used the stairs on my first playthrough, just shooting govmen along the way.  When you say "lift" was there actually an elevator I never saw that you can use?

I haven't experienced a grapple glitch that I recall - do you mean it was just connecting to the underside of a platform instead of the edge?  I have had that but I think its just the angle at which your trying to connect at.

Yes, the cursor was on the ledge "edge, but the grapple kept hitting the silo (oval) cover and inttead of reeling up, I wound up hanging further down, it was pretty annoying as it was during the timer section. Subsequent attempts were fine, once I stayed away from the oval covers.

Yes the guy tells you use the lift, its on the first floor, if you cant see it, then its on the other side of the central column, it brings you all the way to the floor with the missile, so you can bomb it or shoot it from the tower instead of going near the missile at all. I dismounted the gun pointed at the (I think they were) comms towers and it only took a few rounds, as opposed to 2 dynamite charges.

I think the game actually "wants" you to use the chopper that attacks you, it kinda makes sense, with the time limit, I only got to try it once, But, because the camera glitched and I had to go out after that, I never tried again.

But I think I'll longfinger that mission and stick with having fun :)

hilarious.  I never new there was a lift there!  I hauled my sorry arse up all those stairs...   ^+-+  The 2nd and 3rd towers I was able to grapple/chute my way there and get up at least half way, then use the stairs the rest of the way.

here's a fun way to end that mission albeit in a mission fail

Cool videos, space - ones you've posted before?  :-X

@Fiach - I was going to recommend leaving that mission for later because it is one of the tougher ones to get through because of the timer issue - that's what I did the first time I entered that mission.  In fact, early in the game I typically aborted a mission that was too difficult and came back later.  My most notable example was the chemical heist, which my poor flying skills would just not let me accomplish in the time allotted.  Here's how a I solved it:

Spoiler

You're given a helicopter to fly a chemical (that is degrading) in a specified amount of time to a town down the mountain - although most were able to do it, I was not - usually just seconds short of completion - talk about aggravation!  :D  My solution - as soon as the timer started, order the small jet from the BM dealer - voila - plenty of speed and plenty of time left.  The moral of the story - there is usually some kind of open world w@&k-around to get past these sticky parts.

There are lots of really cool missions that don't require a specific time to complete, and one of my all time favorites is:

Spoiler
the one to the mysterious island in the northwest - part of the fun: you get to gingerly drive a cargo truck safely (no timer) to your destination.

Space's recommendation regarding the thruster chute makes it really simple to complete with tons of time to spare.  :-X

Although I'm currently in a play through in FC2, this conversation is making me want to get pack into Panau - really cool that I'd hit a dry spell not really wanting to play any of my games much, and now I'm excited to play two of them again.  :-X

I'll try it with the chopper first when I do it, see how it works out :)

That chut gliding, I do that on the ground, I havent been in the air yet without being in a chopper or an airplane, but I'll give it a try :), I think you could do that in the old game ... or maybe it was being pulled by cars, I forget now ..... I'm having a "senior moment" I think :)

I really like that missile thing, The DLC is very cheap, probably because you have to buy the stuff in game too, cant hook my 360 to the internet just yet, will try later though, thanks :)

@PZ I only checked the truck one, reminds me of TDU :) I'll check the other after I try the mission first, if I need a hint, but if its that cool, I want it to be a surprise, thanks :)

Have fun, Fiach - the biggest lesson I learned is to leave the stuff that you don't like, and go on to the things that you do like - there is so much in the game that you'll be busy for a long time to come.  For instance, I really dislike most races, so I just leave them alone and go on to fun things.  Then I've come back to some of the timed events after I've gained experience in the game and found that I can actually accomplish them after all.

Fiach, I've just checked my JC2 stats of the current career, I've spent 268 hours on that one alone.. :) 93,28% completion (all locations discovered, all plot and faction missions done) but I only did very few free fall challenges and just a couple of other challenges, perhaps slightly over 50 in total, because they made me go, "aw, F' it!" mostly  ^+-+

I just unlocked this, how does the upgrade w@&k, do I get to keep the heli or can I just summon it?

ie. Do I buy it from the BM, upgrade it, then summon it as required for a price?

Do you think it would w@&k with those sattellites?

lol @ Art, yeah I've said that a few times :)

you can spend your upgrades at any time with the BM and not have to buy it.  when you do buy it he'll drop it off for you.  It could w@&k with the satellites if you have weapons upgraded so you don't have to try and land it up there.

Thanks Spaceboy, But if you buy it, do you get to keep it?

@Art, its a mission called Come Fry with me, Destroy Three Satellites in Cape Carnival. Its an early mission in NE of the map I think.

You have to upgrade the Rowlinson to the max before it is equipped with machine guns - before you do the last upgrade it is completely unarmed.  You get to keep it as long as you don't ruin it, or get shot down.  Once you let it go (or it is taken - the govmen will steal it if you leave it parked) you'll need to purchase it again, but as I recall, it is really cheap as far as aircraft go.

Like spaceboy said, I'd not worry too much about the cost - as you do missions and pick up the numerous cash boxes spread throughout Panau, you'll have plenty of money.

sure - it's yours until it explodes,  which on Panau won't be all that long.  I wish I had the magical Far Cry 2 wrench in this game, but alas no repairs.

I see PZ snuck in here and answered more... :)

I'm not positive, but I think that you can do these missions whenever you want - there are so many that you can keep yourself plenty busy even if you skip some intending to return later.

lol space, I just was posting and received the message indicating that your post just preceded this one!  ^+-+

Here's a video of how the fully upgraded Rowlinson operates, if you don't mind a slight spoiler.  It demonstrates an alternate method of completing a mission.

Although this is a mod that was developed for PC users, it has the same basic elements of the DLC version, only it does not overheat

JC2 New DLC Chute Thruster - MODDED (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0AmCRLevTw#ws)

This one is similar to spaceboy's multi-target rocket launcher video, but also was developed for PC users as a mod without needing the DLC

JC2 Multi-lock Rocket Launcher - no DLC (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=If7WHOVtlWo#ws)
