Title: JC2 vids
Post by: spaceboy on April 09, 2010, 09:26:07 AM
Here's a few videos I recorded

this mission seemed like a classic FC2 "raid" after a couple failed attempts of me getting into a major gun fight at the training camp I decided to steal a tank - watch the mercenary go flying through the air
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isf_Oo2Vd3E

after mission ended I decided to clean out the place, here's a perfect grenade throw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDYSE1bMPsc

unrelated jump on the "LOST" island from the TV show - a tower to tower jump

thanks Art.

These next two are not mine, but for all of you FC2 fans that wish you could place 20 or more IEDs on something watch what this guy does.  The little rectangles are C4.

yes, impressive what has become of games, lately. Some of the images in the vid made me think I was watching real world footage (well, almost)  :)

I've been browsing youtube to find a good playthrough, and I found a console player doing it on hardcore. I believe it's not his first playthrough, he knows stuff before they happen (when and where helos will show up during agency missions) but then again, he's got it figured out well and shows interesting tactics and strategies as well as some cool moves. If you're curious about the game or just want to watch someone play it nicely, here you go:

Oh, you'll need to scroll down that right hand side column because he doesn't feature a playlist, but every part of that playthrough is there.

playlist :)

I'm on #28 now, of the playthrough posted above; gives someone who hasn't got the game (yet) quite an overview of what it is like and what to expect. I'm so looking forward to getting it soon (the guy who'll get it for me was on holiday)

I just edited the link for that playthrough, there was a playlist which I had missed the first time.

Wow, those are excellent videos, guys.  If this doesn't spark interest in open world gaming, then nothing will  :-X

On the one with the IED loaded truck - I wonder if you could grapple the jet and truck together so that you'd get explosions in mid-air, or alternately, hop onto the back of the plane and plant the IEDs and then parachute off to hit the detonator - mid-air.  I think I'll try it.  ;D

I remember the training cam mission - I liked that one very much and using the Razorback (tank) was loads of fun.  In fact, I use one in every area that I find.  In fact, I'm now using quite a few of the military vehicles on the civilian roadways to create some fun.

The time-lapse video does show quite a bit of the beauty of Panau  :-X

The videos spark ideas on what to try next in the game - I can't wait to get back ti it!

I've just come across the following vid and it instantly reminded me of spaceboy's (inimitable) perfected ways of mastering a land-bound vehicle.  ;) ;D

Just the first three minutes are relevant for that.

I recall doing that mission, and it seems that the govmen do not target the hostage that you're escorting.  In my adventure, I recall running/gunning the last couple of hundred meters or so without a vehicle and the mission went fine.

I'm not sure if you're talking about the same vid... if so, maybe you recognised the vehicle, but there is no one in it but the player who is on his way to a rendezvous point to start a new mission. If he were escorting/driving someone, you'd see a green symbol with a health-bar around it. However, if you watch the first three minutes, you might see what I meant regarding some similarities between spaceboy's graceful driving and the one driving that car :)

lol Art, I really love how that truck can take a beating and keep going.  In reference to black market prices on the other thread, that's partly why I rarely buy vehicles from the black market.  I so quickly destroy them  ;)  plus there are so many worthy vehicles to be had in the game.

One time I bought the silverpelt plane to fly across to the map to a location and goofing around I hit the exit button instead of stunt button.  I found myself parachuting down over a large expanse of water, with my jet nose diving.  All I could do was aim towards a boat I saw.   I wound up swimming a bit then hijacking a boat and making my way from there.  Wasn't what I planned but fun nonetheless!

Yes, same vid, but I'm not talking about the ice cream truck - I was referring to the last half of the video.

However, the first part showing the beating that the ice cream truck can take is impressive, especially if you have driven the game's other vehicles.  Some are fragile while others are more stout, but the DLC truck is in a league of it's own.

I see, spaceboy... indeed, there are so many vehicles I've seen so far in those vids, it makes me want to test them all; I believe motorbikes are very nice to get around.

PZ, sorry, I didn't realise you were referring to the last bit of the vid. Now I understand :) However, that ice cream truck was maxed out by that player. Maybe that's why it could stand such a beating  :)

It sure seems to be so - I haven't even tried that vehicle yet.  I have seen a few "super car" mods that make a vehicle indestructible - would be nice to have so that you can use the same vehicle for an entire island.

I installed a cluster grenade launcher mod last night and used FRAPS to capture this short clip.  The grenade launcher is a secondary weapon that is carried on Rico's belt - I fired single rounds which exploded as cluster grenades with devastating effect.

Heh, reminds me of a cheat for CoD:MW, I used cluster (hand) grenades in the "secret" (last) level when you needed to rescue a hostage on a jumbo jet. Very funny to use that kind of gear on a plane, anyway :)

I just have to stop watching the following vid at like 7min mark because a) I got a coughing fit laughing, and b) I want to share it with you right away. What is so funny? How that guy (ab)uses vehicles in a row. Probably not even planned, but I think it's funny as hell... enjoy

maybe just start at 3:00min, before that it's not important.

Glad to see there is someone out there who drives worse than I.  ;D

I wish I could capture more than thirty seconds. If I could I would have posted my mission to assassinate the mercenary at the training base attached to a military airfield -- on behalf of the Ular Boys

Without a doubt, that was the wildest thing I have experienced in gaming to date. The first attempt I fought my way through through the entire base with a mini-gun, only to die while trying to kill the merc who was jumping around like a circus performer on meth.

I tried a more stealthy approach on the next attempt, starting at the training base. I got pretty close to the merc and started by tossing about six grenades. After that, I emptied one and a half mags from the machine gun [not the SMG] into the merc at close range before he died. And he wasn't wearing armor...

And then came the helicopter swarm....

Things got so crazy I may have lost count but I believe by the time it was over I had hijacked three, having two of them blown out from under me. I downed four outright. At one point I had three attacking me simultaneously. I shot two of them down before mine was blown up and I hijacked the third.

Then I had to fight my way through the base, blowing stuff up and searching for items. I even left the base and returned to the gas station for desperately needed health and to get re-oriented for my search for items. It seemed like I was on the verge of dying constantly. I couldn't seem to find a spot where I wasn't being shot in order to restore my health.

I blew up the station and ended up with no less than seven soldiers charging me. After handling them I hopped on a bike and rode all the way back through the base looking for the remaining items. Most of the soldiers in the base had re-spawned  and I had to fight them off while I frantically searched.

I finally found the last two items -- a case and a SAM site at the end of the runway quite a distance from the rest of the base. After taking care of those two items, I received the coveted area completed notice.

My hands were shaking and my palms were sweaty. I think I had been going at it full throttle for at least twenty minutes. I was exhausted.

Finished up the night with a mission to kill drug smugglers for the Roaches when this happened....

You know you are in trouble when the heat level is 5 and you are in a helicopter over a military base. While I was trying to hijack those choppers, rockets were buzzing past my head like Mosquitos during an Arkansas summer picnic.

And all this "mayhem and violence" [quoting the King from Far Cry 2] was on the "Casual" setting.

WTF?  ;D

I can't even imagine how this would play out on a harder difficulty.

eor - you know you can start a recording under the vid cap menu and record up to 10 minutes right?  The 30 second feature is for auto capture.  But if you just turn capture on it'll just start recording.  Good if you're about to storm into somewhere.

Also Art you know I like to abuse vehicles alot!  I was in this awesome race last night (I should do it again and record it).  I like getting govmen heat before a race as it makes it even more exciting to be being chased and shot at  ;D   I was in this cool dunebuggy car I really like.  Lots of flips, rolls, keep driving, smoking tires, driving on rims, had to ditch the buggy and luckily saw a brand new one driving so I hijacked it, had to do a sweet 180 to go back to a missed checkpoint.  My checkpoints were getting made almost all less than 10 seconds before time ran out.  I kept extending them and just scraped through - it was totally wicked! 8)

so true Art - some of the best stuff (to play and watch) is when things don't go as planned.

Check out this one:  planting C4 and detonating is the same button, it only matters how long you hold the trigger down.  Yes, I have no shame in my mistakes, only laughter...

lol, that's a funny one space!

I was riding stunt on a Roach car this morning and tried throwing a C-4 charge on a govman truck chasing us - only the C-4 landed on the roof of the Roach car instead, and of course, due to the fast pace, I pressed the detonate button before it registered in my pea brain.  Naturally, "Restart from checkpoint" was my only option.

PZ, pea brain ? LOL c'mon, man!  ;D

Space: yeah, we're not boys any more who want to prove their coolness at all times, are we :)

That vid was funny  ;D Although to me it looked as if there was a c-4 on the car, then you whipped out the remote and then immediately pushed the button. I couldn't see that you were holding the button too long. Still, it was fun, and the best part was when that huge ceiling came tumbling down in slo-mo  ;D :-X

yes, I'd already planted one and was going to put one or two more on it, the drive it all the way into the gas station between the pumps (that's the roof you see).  Well, that was the plan.   PZ I think I did the same thing - plant C4 on the roof of the car I was riding on.  :P

hey batdog.

to embed here you can go to the Gallery (menu at top) and create your own user album(s).  There is a place to paste the actual URL of a youtube video (not the "embed" code, the actual URL) -you can name the item etc. and when you submit you'll get a new screen which shows the BBC code.  it'll look like this [code is here]  simply paste that code in your post.

Here's a short (18 second) clip of the multi-lock rocker launcher - the one that does not require the DLC.  I tried it yesterday and it works quite well, but it seems to lose the icons for the lock (but t does not lose the rocket lock itself).

There have been reported issues regarding the DLC targeting - evidently the targeting system locks onto the base of the target, but if you're trying to destroy the tall fuel tanks, (which are enclosed in a concrete barrier) the rockets never make it to target.

I can confirm that this is true.

Okay...so people like to show video captures of themselves seamlessly dispatching dozens of enemies, capturing each explosion with just the right camera angle.

Well...this isn't one of those.

I had the assault planned very well: gather all of the items; place explosives on the statue and the gas pumps; detonate from the bell tower and let things cool down; glide over and take out the Colonel.

Nice plan.

Once again I hooked the bell by accident, crashing through three floors of the bell tower.

I managed to find a remaining inside ledge at the top of the bell tower. Still good cover. Pressed the detonate button...nothing happened.

There seems to be certain sequences of events that render all or some previously placed explosives inoperative. If you switch to grenades before detonating the triggered explosives, this causes problems. I'm not sure what happened here but I placed another charge on the statue and a govman went to alert before I could place new charges on the gas pumps and get back to cover.

I blew the statue and ran to the gas station under fire, taking out the station with the revolver. It was at this point I thought I'd better start a video capture because I knew this was turning into a clusterfuck of epic proportions.

In the chaos that ensued I managed to almost kill myself with a grenade that took a bad bounce off a light pole, jumped and rolled when I shouldn't  and didn't when I should have, wasted valuable time trying to kill will poorly aimed melee attacks, and worst of all didn't remain facing things I blew up for cinematic effect. You'll have to forgive me. I was a little stressed at the moment.

At the conclusion, after shooting down three helicopters and killing 2-3 dozen govmen I reach the Colonel and stand just meters away as I frantically pull the trigger on an empty machine gun. I managed to shoot him in the face with the revolver after a few tries. I picked up some ammo for my machine gun, completed the settlement and almost got away. I managed to box myself in with no cover in which to heal  from numerous wounds.

If there was a Level 6, I think I would have reached it here.

I died, but as Rico says, "It was worth every minute."

Nice story and video eor  :-X

I can almost feel the game as I watched the video - have been in that kind of position many times before.  The next time, I'm going to use the multi-lock launcher to see what it can do.

Don't you just hate those grenade ricochets?  ;D

A few short video captures:

When Rico retrieves the skull at the highest point in Panau and you receive the "Top Of The World" Trophy, he exclaims, "Look Ma! Top of the world...again!" I wish I had known he was going to do that so I could have captured it. I did capture the view.

Thanks eor - I'm with you - I haven't specifically gone looking for the Easter eggs, I like finding them myself.  Now that I'm in mercenary mode and have completed all Agency and Faction missions I've just been roaming, completing settlements, killing Colonels, finding collectibles etc.  So I hopefully will come across those things naturally.  I'll also see if I can't get some of the trophies I didn't get naturally through playing the game.

PZ - good one.  I'll definitely try that out myself!
Title: Re: JC2 vids
Post by: PZ on May 05, 2010, 09:45:03 AM
Thanks, spaceboy - I'm now into more of an experimentation mode with missions thrown in on the side.  I remember your story about car bombing a Colonel, and need to try that one as well.  Your story also prompted another possible method - one of the small jets - crash it into a Colonel.

There is so much to do and so many ways to play that I'm not accomplishing the main story line very fast.
Title: Re: JC2 vids
Post by: spaceboy on May 05, 2010, 10:08:40 AM
I'm liking mercenary mode.  Despite the fact I really liked the missions and structure of the game, it's nice now to "relax" and just truly roam and do what I want.  I'm spending more money at the BM now.  It's like Rico is "retired" from formal missions but goes out to destroy things at his leisure.  I've just been starting in a general direction, and see what's on the way.

I just love the way that the developers managed to vary the terrain of the environment enough so that the areas each seem a bit different even though they are based on the same basic core of objects.  For instance, you can almost feel the cold when running through a military installation high in the snowy mountains, and can almost smell the salt air when on the same kind of installation near the beach.

I'm at 85% with 342 settlements completed. All faction missions done. Just a handful of faction items and one Colonel remaining. All vehicles and all but two weapons I'm not interested in fully upgraded. $6 mil in cash in hand.

And I still haven't gotten to the agency missions.  ;D
Title: Re: JC2 vids
Post by: PZ on May 05, 2010, 10:34:26 AM
Looks like your approach is the opposite of mine - I'm only at 40-ish% with all agency missions completed.  I think it's great that the decision as to how the game is played is up to the gamer - excellent, and in the true spirit of open world gaming.

That is seriously a sweet completion to that Ular boys mission.   That first wave of govmen and the timing of those explosives was perfect!  My version of that mission was chucking frag grenades and shooting the infantry as they were coming in close - yours made Rico look like he was in control, mine felt like he was scraping by for his life.

The boat race is my favorite one so far, partly because it is easy for me to navigate boats, and partly because of the part where you sail across that strand of beach James Bond style.

You use of triggered explosives was excellent.  Like spaceboy, I did lots of running around killing to the best of my ability.

True, but it sure is fun to attach a wire to a truck and pull him down - using the govman vehicle is funny because it feels like you're a pit bull on a leash that's too short.  ;D

PS: the dictator is Pandak Panay, or sometimes called "Baby" Panay.  Sometimes you can hear the govmen calling his name

I like using a helo to take off the statue's head and have been trying to use it against other statues and water towers.

Attempting to do that has resulted in several spectacular fails, resulting in Rico's demise.

Helos don't handle to well with a massive head in tow and if it gets to swinging too much you are in for a wild ride.

[smg id=2285 type=av]

This one inspired me to try a variant this morning - I took the mission, but rather than using the provided quad for transportation, I had the black market dealer deliver a Rowlinson K22 (armed).  This is the tiny helicopter that is fast and agile.

I flew the K22 to the temple and then parked it a short distance away, went up to the temple to trigger the mission, and then grappled back to the copter.  Quickly ascending, it was no more than 20 seconds later that all three groups of govmen attacking from three points of the compass were in smoking ruin.

What fun it is to play in this huge sandbox  :-X

The moral of the story - there is always some technique that will get the job done easily, but the improper choice leads quickly to death.  ;D

Yeah, I see those icons from time to time. They are a result of me strafing an area with a helo and moving on without completing the settlement.

They can be annoying and confusing at times.

No...no missile. There was a fire fight taking place below me and someone tossed a grenade. One reason I swapped audio on the clip was because of the gunfire below. It ruined the mood.  ;D

BTW... I learned how to fly the balloon. You step to the corner of the gondola which coincides with the direction you want to go. I was able to make a perfect landing at the airport where I promptly hijacked a big plane.

perhaps on PC you can't walk?  If you use the keyboard to move that might be the case.  On consoles (back to the analog sticks) you can adjust how fast you move (or accelerate/brake in vehicles).

space is correct - the PC is all-or-nothing like in driving - the analog sticks are definitely a plus when doing fine movements.

btw Art, I believe you have a G15 keyboard - do you know what the chrome "button" with the joystick logo is?  It is located above the F3, F4 keys.  It looks like a button, but does not press.
Title: Re: JC2 vids
Post by: Art Blade on May 14, 2010, 08:23:47 AM
yes, it prevents the windows button (left side, next to CTRL) from popping up the start menu when the joystick is lit (slide it to the right) hence keeps your game running rather than flicking it back to the taskbar (happens quickly if you miss CTRL and hit windows instead).

Happened to me, too: under water a scorpion popped up and ran away on the ground. I've observed scorpions every once and then, there doesn't seem to be a pattern behind it, so I think it's safe to say that they appear randomly.

Ive had a look at some of the vids and JC2 does look impressive. it kind of reminds me a bit of FC1, but updated a lot. ;)

The third person perpective puts me off tho, and when i watch Rico's movements, it still looks like a playstation game to me. But the final nail in the coffin is that according to the Gamespot review i read(8.5/10) JC2 doesn't support Windows XP!! I find that a huge oversight. How many millions of PC's are still using XP i wonder.  Oh well, whatever.

Well, im hoping to get beyond the upcoming FONV with this aging system then i'll prolly see if i can afford more memory and a newer GPU. However, if i find that i'd need Win7 to play any of the more desirable games in the near future, it would prolly make more sense just to buy a new rig. Ouch!

Still cant believe that some game makers are already writing off anyone with Win XP!

I agree, but the handwriting is on the wall when it comes to adding new and exciting graphics to games - unfortunately as far as many software developers are concerned, XP is already outdated by two versions - Vista and W7.  DirectX 11 for instance does not have an XP version and undoubtedly games will be (or are) using Dx11.
Title: Re: JC2 vids

The reason why JC2 doesn't run with XP is that it actually requires DX10 (introduced with vista, continued with win7)

From STEAM:
Quote11.3 million people died colliding with objects or the ground in Just Cause 2. If you map them all in a spatial area to scale with the Just Cause 2 world map, then you get the video above, a beautiful and strangely poignant ghostly landscape made up of the terminus points of millions of players.

It goes to show two things. Firstly, it's easy to underestimate the amount of falling out of things onto things that happens in Just Cause 2. Secondly, hardly any players seem to have explored the spaces between the world's major roads and settlements, suggesting that vast swathes of Just Cause 2′s massive world went relatively untrodden. There's even a cloud of death hanging miles above the ground. How did so many people die of collisions all the way up there?

What I found particularly interesting was the column of white dots beneath the Miles High Club, then the waterfall near the building with the bridge between those two towers and some diagonal lines at the lower ends of which are probably airports to be found. I found the reason. Simple as it is, it's still annoying: In my profile, "look and layout" has two options that relate to the maximum amount of embedded media. I had Topics to display per page: 50  and Messages to display per page: 50  and was able to see the one vid further up the same topic as embedded but my link was the first that didn't show. So I reset those values to forum default (7) and now it's embedded.
