Title: Funny Moments
Post by: batdog on May 24, 2010, 04:30:47 AM
There's been some mention of how dark and depressing some of the subject matters are in RDR.  Yes but there are some lighter moments.  Not quite as laugh out loud as JC2 but still quite funny.  Here are some single player examples:

Riding behind another guy who jumps off his horse, walks over to the nearest tree and starts pissing against it - yes you do see the stream of piss.  I've also spotted a dog in Armadillo cocking his leg against the station building.

Stopping to help a prostitute in distress by the side of the road only to find that she jumped on my horse and rode off.  A couple of shots from my Winchester Repeater persuaded her that it wasn't a smart move.

A similar thing happened when I tried to apprehend a criminal.  I was so busy trying to (unsuccessfully) lasso him that he jumped on my horse and tried to make a getaway.  I experimented by whistling for my horse, he bucked the criminal off and I was able to catch him alive.  Whistling doesn't always seem to buck the baddies off your horse though.

Riding shotgun for one of the major characters in the story, we were pursued by numerous horse riding baddies.  Think of car-surfing in JC2 and shooting the pursuing govmen.  Targeting is very easy and the criminals fall very convincingly off their horses.  On several occasions their legs get caught in their reins and they are swung around a few times and flung up in the air. The more I play it the more I'm impressed by the Euphoria physics engine (look it up on YouTube or at naturalmotion.com for some interesting tech information).  I don't think I was really so aware of it in GTA IV but here the physical reactions to being shot are really well done.  OK, JC2's ragdoll physics is funnier but here it just feels more - satisfying!

Random violence is occasionally funny but often bewildering.  I turned up at Thieves Landing to meet up with one of the characters, walked through the doors of the saloon and suddenly all hell broke loose.  The barman pulled out a rifle and started shooting at me, a couple of patrons joined in and shot at me and a couple more attacked the barman.  I managed to kill the barman and one of my attackers but ended up dead.  None of this was scripted as after reloading I returned to the same spot and everyone was all smiles.

Hehe, I liked the bar scene you described... and what tehsam016 said, he killed those who had been playing poker with him. Sounds cliché Wild West, but funny too  :) :-X

Haha yeah I dont really lose anymore in poker thanks to the Elegant Suit you get in thieves landing that lets you cheat ;). But if you dont like somebody that's at the table you can get caught cheating on purpose and duel whoever caught you. The good thing is if you win you get more fame as well :).

After my four year old accidentally discovered jumping onto your horse from a height I managed it last night.  Go upstairs in the saloon at Armadillo, walk through the double doors to the outside upper decking and stand right against the railings. Whistle for your horse a few times so that he (or she?) is immediately below you, then vault over the railings.  Possible damage to your manhood, but cool nevertheless.  8)  I'll see if I can do from a greater height. I'm also thinking of mounting my horse from a moving train, but that's maybe a bit ambitious.  :-\

Nice info on the jump/mount - somewhat related, I am impressed how cool it looks getting on or off a moving horse.

The train passed me twice, can you jump on or do you need to be at a station to get on?

You can jump from your horse onto the train as i have many times. It's fun just sitting on top of the train watching the beautiful scenery pass by.

I was in the coal mine and accidentally whistled for my horse.  I could see on the HUD the poor thing trying to get to me above me.  As I eventually made my way out of the mine (the opening is in the side of a hill)...I see my horse run full gallop over the edge and fall to its death.  Crap.  Luckily you have to only wait a minute or two before you can whistle a new one.

Wound up jumping the train into town anyways though...

These horses seem like lemmings.  In a similar vein my four year old caused havoc on my game by jumping off my horse, mounting a different horse and then riding off as fast as he could.  My riderless horse followed in hot pursuit.  I suddenly realised that my son was heading for a cliff so I shouted several times to put on the brakes. He fumbled with the controller but at the last moment pulled to a stop at the edge of the cliff.  Unfortunately my riderless horse had no means of slowing down and sailed straight over the edge to his death.

Game of poker gone bad in Mexico. German accuses Marsten of cheating, gets up and draws his pistol. Marsten draws his pistol. Old gunfighter pulls his pistol. A few Mexicans with the German pull their pistols. Everyone has a pistol pointing at them.

The German remarks,

"There must be a name for this."

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

The old gunfighter says, "Yeah, it's called an impasse."

In case you aren't getting the humor, such a situation is known as "Mexican standoff."

Btw, does anyone know how it came to be known as a Mexican standoff?

Interesting that Cambridge Dictionary says that the term has its origins in Australia?

From Wiki:

A Mexican standoff is a slang term defined as a stalemate or impasse, a confrontation that neither side can forseeably win. In popular culture, the Mexican standoff is usually portrayed as three or more opponents with guns drawn and ready, creating a tense situation. Neither side is willing to shoot for fear of being shot in return, yet neither side wants to relinquish its weapons for fear that its opponents will shoot them. This situation forces the participants to resolve the situation either by diplomacy, surrender, or a pre-emptive strike. Discussions of the Soviet Union-United States nuclear confrontation during the Cold War frequently used the term, specifically in reference to the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.

This expression came into usage during the last decade of the 19th century, most likely originating in the American southwest, although the Cambridge Dictionary makes the claim that the term is of Australian origin.[1]

The Mexican standoff is now considered a movie cliché through its frequent use in Spaghetti Westerns, B-movies, and the films of Ringo Lam (specifically City on Fire), Quentin Tarantino (especially Reservoir Dogs) and John Woo. Nevertheless, it remains a staple in popular culture because of its potential for high-tension drama.

Ran into an odd situation last night....

Except for the watching the inventor attempt to fly his homemade glider, I was finished with the Mexico missions. I had brought him the red sage, beaver pelts, and feathers he needed but had to wait a few hours to go back and watch his attempt.

I rode to the nearest town, which is Casa Madrugada where I could save my game and flirt with the prostitutes until time to go back to the mission.

The usually busy place was almost deserted. The only person inside the town was the preacher and he was still walking around preaching as usual.

When I was in my room saving the game, I heard growls, howls, and barks -- close by.

I started looking around for people. Was bitten by a rattle snake as soon as I opened a door. There were rattlers all over the town. I shot 3-4 of them.

The town was infested with coyotes, wolves, and bobcats It was a regular traffic jam in the courtyard with them all milling about. Oddly enough, the preacher was walking around among them, taking no notice. I learned that I could freely walk around them as well. The only risks to me were the rattlesnakes. Vultures were making low passes just above the courtyard.

I could have stayed there hours killing and skinning animals as they strolled into the courtyard.

I heard a woman scream and rescued a prostitute about to get knifed. Afterward she walked around the empty saloon for a while and disappeared into a room.

The place was pretty creepy.

I reloaded the game with similar results...only the prostitute didn't appear, or I didn't wait long enough.

Really strange... the wolves and bobcats periodically strolling into the courtyard. A coyotes spawns somewhere in the rear of the courtyard every few minutes. The snakes can be anywhere. I sure wasn't expecting to find one inside a room when I opened the door. I almost died and didn't know what was happening.

Whenever I shot an animal, the preacher ran screaming out of the courtyard but he quickly respawned around the "hotel" and greeted Marsten.

Definitely the strangest thing I've encountered.

A guy in Blackwater asked for help returning his stolen horse. I chased down and shot the horse thief, literally running into a couple of cops while lassoing the the horse. Right after I lassoed the horse, one of the cops mounted it and rode it back to the owner with me pulling it along with the rope.

When I released the horse, the guy said, "Thank you for returning my horse, mister." He then grabbed the cop, pulled him off the horse, got on and rode away. I was watching with amusement when the cop grabbed me and pulled me off my horse. He then began to punch me. I responded with punches and he pulled out a gun so I shot him.

Ended up in jail. No good deed goes unpunished.

Title: Re: Funny Moments
Post by: eor123 on May 29, 2010, 08:53:26 PM
If you surrender, your time in jail varies with the severity of the crime. There is a time lapse cut scene you have to sit through.
Title: Re: Funny Moments

Thanks :)

(Reminds me of TestDriveUnlimited. When caught, traffic violations cost money, and if you haven't got enough, you need to spend some time in jail, which basically teleports you there, causes a cut scene, and then you're out... sort of in the middle of the map where the jail is.)

I was hunting down a bounty the other night in the snowy mountainous area (forgot the exact name). Anyway, after i finally got to his location i killed all his bandit friends only to notice he was still cowering on top of the hill. So after a few seconds i notice him slowly running towards me. As he comes around the corner I lasso him and then proceed to hogtie. However after finishing hogtying him, his tied up body slides and falls off the side of the small cliff we were by. At first it kinda freaked me out since i thought that killed him, but a quick glance over the cliff surprised me when i saw him at the bottom still struggling. So then it took me about 20 mins to find a way down without dieing all while being shot by bandit reinforcements. But im happy to say i finally got him down, and raced back to blackwater for my much deserved bounty =P.

Title: Re: Funny Moments
Post by: tehsam016 on May 31, 2010, 05:51:54 AM
Well it appears I didn't complete that bounty mission i had previously posted about since I just recently turned on the game and noticed I was still in the mission and had to return to Nikoti Rock to get the same bounty. So i thought why not and headed there to finish what i started. This is by far the best location i've got a bounty simply because it's on a huge cliff. Well this time it actually took me two attempts, and this is why:

First attempt: I cautiously went up the mountain, dismounting off my horse about half way up. As i slowly crouch walk up the hill, i notice two bandits walking down the hill. I drop the one in front first, and quickly shoot the other in the leg making him stumble around eventually falling and rolling off the side of the cliff, but somehow survives. Then, A couple more guys come rushing down to help, but i quickly dispatched them, shooting another one in the leg again making him tumble down the cliff (this time killing him in the process). As i finish the last bandit I notice the bounty racing towards me on his horse. While he's racing towards me i go into dead eye and shoot his horse many times making the horse fall and hit the ground making the bounty fly off. Since they were going down a slope with a cliff at the bottom, the bounty of course rolls down the path, and careens off the hill killing him in the process. As i go down to loot his body for the reward, reinforcements are already converging on my position. Next as i try to leave the reinforcements get up to me starting a brief fire fight. In the midst of the fire fight a bear decided to get into the action and knocked me down. As i got up to shoot the bandits while trying to keep away from the bear, the bear comes out of nowhere hitting me one more time making me die.

Second Attempt: After restarting at the nearest save point i decided this time i would take a more direct approach. So after reaching the location again, i notice one bandit is at the bottom of the hill this time. Since this was the case I had no other option to shoot him, alerting the rest of the posse. Right after dropping the loner at the bottom I head up the hill only to notice about 4 guys running down the hill to investigate. As they turn the corner I promptly go into dead eye and aim for their legs since they were running down the same slope as mentioned earlier. After nailing them all in the legs, they all tumbled and rolled down the slope one after another all falling off the cliff at the end killing them all. I almost had to pause because i was laughing so hard, the physics are a good reason this game stands out, simply because you get totally different reactions when you unload on people (especially those who are next to ledges). But anyway, that pretty much finished off all the bandits except the bounty, but i simply walked up the hill and lassoed him as he was trying to flee on his horse.

I am now on my way back to Blackwater, but i just had to pause and share this glorious moment as it's probably one of the funniest i've encountered yet.

Thanks Eyeore :) There's been so many posts in this thread in the last few days, I kind of lost track of the question...

Interesting... I can't imagine how "Mexican standoff" could have come about here. The only way I can think of is this: the state I live in is New South Wales, and south of us is the state of Victoria. So, on occasion, we in NSW jokingly refer to our Victorian neighbours as "Mexicans" (since they live south of the border). This seems to me to be a pretty unlikely source of the expression, though.

And nobody knows why our state is called New South Wales. We'd have to ask Captain Cook, but since he got conked on the head by irate Hawaiians and thus is no longer available for comment, even if he had lived to be 282 years old, we'll never know.

That nickname "Mexicans" sounds like a good idea to me as to where that expression came from... sometimes rather silly things make it into the books  :)

This was more than a funny moment for me - it was hilarious.

I entered a poker game and started betting like there was no tomorrow.  Naturally, I lost everything I had, but when the game ended, I donned my bandanna, then lassoed the poker dealer and hog tied him.  Then I carried him off to a secluded spot he was discretely dispatched with ease.  Finally, I looted all the night's takings from his dead body.

The detail to which you can carry out your sandbox activities amazes me.  :-X

I managed to bust the high stakes game in Blackwater; walked away with 5000 chips ($500). I've accumulated most of my $20,000 through hunting :)

I had an eagle in my sights when a fox jumped up and bit my arm, while trying to shake him loose a bear bowled me over. I managed to off him, but his brother got me  ;D

Just recently had a rather humorous and confusing moment..I was hunting in Tall Trees a little while ago, shooting deer and elk left and right. However there was a brief moment where i couldn't find anything worth hunting so i wondered around a little bit. As i ventured a little bit further down the hill, i noticed a camp with two men carrying around and stacking tnt boxes. The devil inside me told me instantly to shoot one of the crates, but I opted to be nice, and stayed out of their business as they didn't appear to need any help or anything. So as i go back up the hill to find some more animals all of a sudden I hear one of the men say something like "What are you doing!?", then just a split second after that a huge explosion goes off. As i turn around all i can see is a big smoke cloud, but no camp. Im not sure if one of them dropped a case or what, but when i went over to them, they were both laying dead on the ground about 20 feet apart. I then looted them both and went on my way :P.

Hilarious  ;D You should go visit that place more often to see if someone else is about to do the same thing, and then you better shoot one of those crates before they blow themselves up ;D

I saw those guys first in the desert north of Ridgewood in the Halsey Passing area. I got close enough to hear one say "we need some more dynamite" then the other guy with the German accent (as he goes to light a smoke) "vee need to be carefull, one spark and....BOOM....DEAD! Restarted at my campsite  ;D

Next time I saw them was NE of Blackwater near the river. This time I sniped the TnT barrel, not a trace of their camp left.....I've seen them twice since in the same area, and both times I put the scope on them they ran off. When they were clear I hit the TnT, and the camp was still there including the chest with $49  :) Well, $49 the first time, $43 the second.

Haven't seen them or Grizzly Adams in Tall Trees yet though.

*********slight spoilers*********
I'm nearing the end of the story missions and two things were quite funny.  I had to capture Javier Escualla and as I brought him back to Reyes group my horse promptly trampled one of his men (at a slow trot mind you)  failed the mission due to assaulting Reyes men.  No problem another chance to chase down Escuella.

The other one was riding into Blackwater to meet up with Agent Ross I came in at full hilt on my steed and jumped off only to fall and roll into a fetal position nearly getting trampled by my own horse.  Yes, I've gone out and killed all these men, the hero returns...whoa....crap... **looks around sheepishly while getting up**

I didn't have time to finish that final? mission (Dutch), it was longer than I thought so hopefully I can put it to rest tonight and see safe passage to my wife and child.

****SPOILER****

For anyone that wants to finish the game as John Marston, rather than Jack (his son), then I'd advise not completing the Dutch mission, or at least saving a game prior to that mission.

There's nothing really wrong with Jack, and you end up with the same equipment. etc, but his voice is more like a youngsters, and for the immersion value, I miss being John.
Title: Re: Funny Moments
Post by: tehsam016 on June 16, 2010, 02:14:47 PM
I'm hoping they expand on Jack in future DLC. I feel most people don't really like him since you dont really get the chance to ever really play any story missions with him (except when he was a little boy). I'd say i like both the characters equally, and it was a good way to transition to the end of the game/allow players to play after the game is over. It'd be too much like GTAIV (or any other free roam game for that matter) if he lived and you continue to play as him (since none of the main characters died in GTA or the DLCs).
Title: Re: Funny Moments
Post by: PZ on June 16, 2010, 04:36:56 PM
Although I have no information to support this - there is a huge chunk of real estate in the northwest part of the main map that is completely empty - exactly the kind of place where DLC might play a role.

I do like Jack's appearance a bit better than John's, but I could do without the youthful "yee-haws!" as I ride through the west.  ;D
