Here you can post your tips and questions.
Don't be afraid of asking even "silly" questions: No one of OWG will tolerate or give "stupid" answers - we are here to make it a great experience for you and you'll get any help you need.
ok, silly question, exactly how do the custom missions w@&k / get installed ?
did fair bit of weapon / armour mods in Stalker but missions seems pretty different or am i just being Dunce-boy again?
Not at all, me and others had the same question. Luckily gvse left a description with his files in the download section.
QuoteInstallation: put the pbo file in your program files/arma2/missions folder and select Yard.Chernarus in scenarios once in game
That means, select the mission you downloaded, the description is from yard.chernarus file/mission in that case
nice, pulled em down but not checked em yet, got couple ideas reckon i could do too.
If you download mods like new weapons, vehicles, units, etc., the armaholic group recommends that you check this FAQ (http://www.armaholic.com/plug.php?e=faq&q=18) on how to keep things organized.
There are also convenient ARMA2 launchers in which you can specify which mods you want to run thereby decreasing RAM overhead.
The top menu for ARMA2 has been changed (the gray menu with the orange font) at the very top of the page. You can now click to see the main Chernarus map or any of the four quadrants. There is also a handy link to the armaholic download page. If you don't see a small yellow down arrow (triangle) next to ARMA2 in the menu bar, then you need to reload the menu. To do so, right click the gray part of the menu to the right of the Print menu item and choose reload/refresh from the submenu and everything will reload.
armaholic.com has also been added to the Other sites menu.
Thank you for the update and all the w@&k, PZ :-X :)
Truly a labor of love ;) :-X
TIP: Using the editor
If you haven't explored the editor yet, you're missing out on some great fun. I'm still new to the game and have not been able to get far in any of the missions so I tried the editor last night. It is so simple, with a few mouse clicks in about 2 minutes I had a "mission". I set myself up as a sniper and when I saw myself, I was dressed in a gilly suit, and my rifle was dressed the same. Was great fun because I could set up as many Chedakis as I wanted (they still killed me though)
I finally tired of being killed so I changed myself (in the editor) to the gunner in an M1A1 - now that was truly a turkey shoot.
In summary, using the editor seems to be very easy and it will be fun to create these kinds of "off beat" missions for others to play with.
We might as well create our own campaign ;)
The political background is very rich and we can explore it to create great missions, independent from each other but sharing the same storyline......
...
...
... or not, just place some Chedakis here and there and hunt them down ;D
Not sure, but can we create multiplayer missions? Would be fun to place some motor bikes and do some racing cross country together ;D ;D
I guess someone has to host the mission and the other players join as co-op... not sure though as I'm not into the editor so far... too busy progressing into the SP campaign
somehow I had the idea of making a FUEL race in ArmA2 :)
Did you say a TANK DEMOLITION race? 8)
Then I know we can count dke58 in for it, and I think PZ is a tank top guy too... hehe, hell yeah :)
now that does sound fun !
have spent most of time playing with them in Armoury, just need to find some good Mods of UK tanks.
will let you all know of any worth getting :-X
I've not played with it yet, but yo can merge missions - might that be a way to create a campaign with several contributors?
You can merge missions? Wow... thats fantastic...
Maybe that's the way... actually, I cant get into the editor right now cos lenghty campaigns usually suck me in... and this one has a deep political background and tensions are escalating as the Red Square has been bombed and Russia is about to get into open fighting 8)
... wait, I hear shots fired in the distance... catch up with you later <zooms away>
:)
If only I could duplicate myself so I could do several things simultaneously. Or I'd have to become a woman, which I refuse to.
I think so, I'm going to play more with the editor this evening - I know that I can plan a mission in any town (or in the middle of nowhere) and then have that mission extend to other towns. Placing vehicles will allow you to drive to the new towns where you can interact with the new units in whatever way you want. This appears to be a very powerful editor that will allow you to do most anything.
You can think of it like this if you could translate the idea to an FC2 SP editor: You place your character anywhere on the FC2 map, equip yourself with anything, and place mercs anywhere you want in as many number as you like. You could equip the mercs with only a machete, or leave them weaponless. You could give them vehicles to drive and if so, dictate exactly where you would like them to drive. You can even describe how skillful you want the mercs to be. You could then create your mission objectives and have at it. Imagine how much fun we here at OWG would have with such a FC2 SP editor and it's a shame that Ubi didn't create one else I'd probably be playing FC2 for a long, long time.
The ARMA2 editor is going to be great... :-X
FC2 is something that will die hard. In total I think I've spent like 200 hours with FC2... never getting boring :)
just been looking around the editor and all seems well set out, intuitive even,
gave me a better understanding of the in-game map too, cos kept seeing green circles, gold dots etc, would run up to them and nothing there (in armoury at least).
Also meant could plant a tank company and drive across island with them, command system for troops is good too.
this editor makes it alot easier to say re-create a scene from a film so long as you got all mods needed for the parts.
And its way way better than Stalker stuff looked at last year.

I think you should consider changing your diet ;D
Yeah, I've never played with an editor like this one - and it looks like the sky is the limit. There is even a box in the settings dialog of all the game elements you place for you to write a script - have not done anything with that, but I'm sure it adds unlimited flexibility to your item.
ARMA2 Newbie Mission Editing FAQ
This is probably the best single document I've found so far on creating missions. Covers everything from creating a briefing intro, to cut-scenes, and high command.

I'm also keeping an article of the interesting tips and scriptlets that you'll need for just about any mission here (http://openworldgames.org/owg/forums/index.php?action=articles;sa=view;article=29)

Yes indeed - we can create multiplayer missions in which we play cooperatively. We could for instance, and you mentioned, ride cross country and complete seek and assassinate missions. The sky's the limit in this game.
WOW, what a totally useful page that will be, time and time again, cheers PZ. :-X
Your a real goldmine of useful info ;D .
Can tell you just from looking down the page it will help with things havent even got round to considering yet, but knew would have to in due course, and now i already know. reference pages like that make the whole process alot quicker, and improve that learning curve.
My pleasure dke - the more quality information we have available, the quicker we'll all be up to speed and can create missions for all to enjoy. Even if we create missions that only we ourselves like, we can post pics and movies for others to enjoy. This is going to be cool. :-X
ARMA2 3D editor
Here's an interesting thing, not well documented. If you press Alt - e while in the Main menu a 3D editor will open up in which you can place objects like you would in the normal editor, but now you see the actual 3D map. It is very limited in function however, but you can get a sense of how the developers are thinking about 3D editing
Entering High Command mode
Press Ctrl - space to enter high command mode while you are in the game. Even if you are not the high commander, you can control the battlefield.

Call in Air and Artillery Strikes
Check this post for instructions on how to call in air strikes (and artillery strikes) by clicking on your in-game map

Delay the entry of a unit on the battlefield
Ever want to delay the entry of a helicopter onto the battlefield? This simple hint should do the trick.
EDIT: Just tried it (took all of 2 minutes to follow the simple directions) and it worked like a charm. I had two marines in an AH fly from a small island offshore and attack the opposing forces. It was fascinating to watch all the action :-X

Setting up a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle)An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is an uncrewed aircraft. You will be controlling a MQ-9 reaper remotely from a command center on your base. You'll be able to fly over enemy territory (day or night) and see exactly what they have using the camera on the UAV.
The Federal Aviation Administration has adopted the generic class unmanned aircraft system (UAS) originally introduced by the U.S. Navy to reflect the fact that these are not just aircraft, but systems, including ground stations and other elements.
Here is how to go about it (
You don't need an airport because you'll be using it while it is already aloft.):
- Add a player to the map
- From the Air menu of your side add a MQ-9 to the map (with no waypoints). In it's Special box, choose flying
- From the Empty --> Warfare buildings menu choose the UAV terminal that belongs to your side and place it wherever you want (it will appear like a radar vehicle).
- From the Modules menu (F7) choose UAV and place one on the map
- Synchronize (F5) the UAV module to the player, the UAV terminal, and the UAV (MQ-9). You should see dark blue lines connecting the UAV module to the other three units if you have done it correctly.
That's it! You can now use a remote control flying drone to spy on your "friends". Now, to use the UAV in the game:
- Preview the mission and you'll be in the camera view of the UAV looking at the ground. Use the mouse wheel to adjust the brightness for day vs. night.
- To change where the drone flys, open your map to see 4 red lines. Simply click on the area you want to spy on and the UAV system will automatically fly a pattern around the area.
- If you want to change the default altitude at which the UAV flies, put this into the init box of the MQ-9 name_of_plane flyinheight 700 (where Name_of_plane is whatever name you choose to give it under it's properties and 700 means the altitude)
Camo Face PaintHow about camo face paint for you or whomever you choose? Use this in the unit's init box:
this setFace "face04_camo4";
haha, that's a nice tip :)
Use your radio to call in a chopper attackThere is a relatively easy way to click your way through the editor to place a chopper, man it with a pilot and gunner, and then wait until you call them in to do an air strike with your radio. Here is how to do it:
- Place an empty chopper on your map and name it something like ah1.
- Nearby, place a crew unit and type: this assignasdriver ah1 into it's init box. Because this is the pilot, make him a Seargent (or something higher than a private).
- Next place a crew unit and type: this assignasgunner ah1 into it's init box. This guy should be a lower rank.
- They should be automatically together (with a green line). If not, then make it so.
- Create a Get in way point to the chopper.
- Create another way point (Move this time)where you want the chopper to wait for your radio signal.
- Create a trigger on the map, choose Activate by radio alpha and set the type to Switch. Click OK
- Next, synchronize (F5) from the trigger to the Move way point.
The crew will get in, start the chopper, move to the holding way point, and continue to the next way point (typically the Seek and destroy) when you call them on radio channel alpha. (type 0-0-1 to activate radio channel alpha)
EDIT: I assembled a mission where you can see this for yourself, and the best part is that it is editable. Yes, that's right - follow the instructions to be able to open in in the ARMA2 editor just like any other user mission you can edit on your computer. The mission utilizes the Utes map and does not require any addons.

I was playing with my home grown mission in Porto again this evening and have set myself up with the Cheytac sniper rifle - interestingly, the Elias sound mod has put in the cocking the bolt sound that was absent in the "stock" game - really cool!
