Title: Faction missions
Post by: PZ on April 24, 2010, 01:43:42 PM
Thought I'd start a faction mission thread where members could post Q&A regarding the missions issued by the faction leaders.

The River Runs Red

I did this faction mission this morning, and it was lots of fun.  This is not a timed mission, so you have plenty of time to w@&k out the details of how you want to approach your tasks.  The basic mission is to run the river with Captain Singh, who needs to deliver cargo.  Your task is to defend the boat and to open the lock doors.

I can't recall the names of the missions but I'm finding myself really enjoying the ones when you escort someone or need to drive something or intercept something.  Getting chased in JC2 is so much fun.  When I compare it to FC2 when I almost always had to stop get out and kill the mercs, it's great to be able to "fight" them while driving.  This includes smashing into them or veering into them, making them crash into oncoming traffic, trees, street lights, off bridges, also stunt jumping and shooting them, or stunt jumping to their vehicle etc.  There is so much variety to keep the action going I wish the destinations were further away.

Of course you can get into these situations just by getting heat, but it's always a bit more fun when you actually have an objective.

Two of the latest ones I really liked were one where I had to extract an informant and deliver him to a host of Ular Boys waiting (who so nicely start taking on the govmen that followed me), and another one where I had to steal a truck with crates of food and make it to the destination without loosing any crates.

I remember those missions space - and I agree totally.  Not only is it fun to be able to fight the govmen while being chased, it is actually a blast to be able to outrun them.  For instance, if you're in a fast vehicle like a jet, there is no hope of them catching you.

I had a great moment a few minutes ago - I was flying a jet getting all of the map marked when I flew too close to a military outpost.  They noticed me and fired SAMs, but the jet was too fast and they have never been able to get me before.  This time, I hardly took notice and kept flying, and was approaching another undiscovered settlement which turned out to be a military installation.  I didn't realize it but the SAM was still on my tail and as I swooped down to "discover" the place, the SAM, which had been following me) hit the installation as I swooped back up!  What a great moment - basically guiding a SAM into a govman target - never thought that would happen.  :-X

that's awesome.  It's amazing how alive Panau is.  Remarkable to me how much more fun it makes to have civilian traffic, active friendly AI, plus the enemy govmen.

Thanks space, I too marvel at how "alive" Panau is, and how much activity goes on.  I'm currently (on the console) flying over all of the settlements to "discover" them with a bare minimum of activity for a starting place for new lays through.  I spent about an hour and a half this morning, and have nearly completed the 368 or so settlements.  I've already done this on the PC so I thought it was going to be a boring chore to do the same thing on the console, but I was pleasantly surprised.  As I'm flying over the map, it is almost like I've not been to most of the places before because as you approach them from a different direction, they look different than before - it almost feels like you're flying over a "real" place.  This morning's session  started in the afternoon, then to a beautiful sunset, through the night, and then into a gorgeous sunrise - talk about immersion.  At night I could see the well-lit military installations, and the warm glow of the civilian areas, complete with the neon of the higher density areas.  In the morning I could see the traffic start up and the highways fill with traffic.  Fly too close to a military installation and they'll alert.

Man, this game is cool, even when you're doing what would seemingly be the most mundane of tasks, like discovering settlements.

I gotta say how great it is the freedom you have in JC2.  For instance, you are enjoying unlocking all settlements which gives you great freedom for extractions and clean starting points for new playthroughs, while, despite the beautiful views you described, I really have no interest in doing that.  I'm more than happy discovering settlements as I play through via missions, races, or roaming.  It's exactly that freedom that allows us to play as we want and enjoy it in each players own way.

I rarely extract unless I really want to get one more mission in before bed.  Usually I see where I end up after a mission and either go to a nearby race, discover a settlement, find some faction items, or do another mission.  Partly based on proximity and what I want to do.  Or just carjack a car and take off!

Yesterday I started at a Ular stronghold and me and a gunner took off in those cool little off roaders they drive.  On my way to a mission we stopped off to collect a couple Ular skulls.  He stayed with the vehicle for awhile but my collecting took me a bit far and when I came back he was gone, but nicely left me the vehicle  :)  I half expected him to be wandering around.  I looked for him a bit then took off.  :P

Nice story about the Ular boy - I've taken trips like that, which have turned out to be a blast  :-X  I completely agree about the freedom to do things the way that you want, whatever the gaming style that you prefer.  I guess that you could sum it up by saying that no matter where you are, you'll find something interesting to do.  :-X

Driving Miss Stacey

This mission involves picking up the wife (of one of the men) who has been under cover as a prostitute and deliver her safely to a drop zone.  Captain Boom-Boom has discovered her treachery, and is now gunning for her.  This is a fun-filled mission during which the action never stops.

This mission combines driving a large pink limo, trying to escape the wrath of the govmen, and making a successful delivery.

An Officer and a Hitman

Your task is to assassinate a mentally-deranged officer.  Obstacles: four SAM sites in the back yard of his mansion, and his very accurate rocket launcher.

I've done this mission twice now, once as a direct assault and once using a helicopter I had left over from another mission.  Hands down, the second method was by far the easiest, even with the SAMs.

Fender Bender

This is another mission that I've done twice now, the first as a direct assault, and the second was an entirely different method (I just love how you can do the missions any way you want).

The first time was as any other mission I tried when first playing - a direct assault that eventually hit my goal.  On the second attempt, I read the location of the mission in the faction description first, but I did not actually accept the mission.  Instead, I went to the area described by the mission and cleared it to 100%, and then went back to accept the mission.  Eventually the outcome was the same (completed mission), but how I went about it was entirely different due to having cleared the area first.

Black Gold

Although I managed to complete this mission after visiting destruction on the oil rig prior to mission acceptance, it is probably best to leave it alone until you actually do the mission.  Plus, you'll need to destroy many of the objects that you had already accomplished because they re-spawn when the mission is started.

The mission is not timed, and is quite fun, but dangerous due to the rig bristling with heavily armed govmen and a SAM.

Death From Above

This mission takes you to a military airport dangling from the belly of a Reaper helicopter.  Your task: destroy four parked military jets.

This is a standard military airport, but is the home of a Colonel.

The first time I did this mission, it was a standard direct assault, but the second time, I had a nasty surprise for the Reapers.

Save the Forrest

Your task is to destroy three silos in the primary mission, and then kill a mad foreman once the silos are destroyed.  The spoilers entry contains a video demonstrating the use of the Rowlinson K22 in this mission.

Nice thread.

Looking forward to your description of the Ular Boys' "Be Quick Or He Be Dead Mission.

Thanks, eor123, I thought it would be nice to have a briefing snapshot as well as a capture of the location of the mission kiosk on the map.  (It is sometimes difficult, but you can just make out the orange mouse cursor on the map.)

The title of the mission you mention sounds familiar, but I can place if I've done it or have just seen it on the map.

It's the one where you have to download the data from a PDA inserted in a guy's rectum.

::)

haha, now I remember - the faction leader was all concerned that the PDA would become corroded with acid and bile  ;D

The faction leader isn't up to par with his anatomy skilz, it appears.

If the guy has stomach acid and bile in his rectum, he might have a bigger problem than just having a PDA up his butt and Rico on his azz.

;D
