Yes, that is an excellent feature - I managed to level up a little quicker while playing co-op.

Another feature I appreciate is that if a partner can't be found, the game will get you into the mission solo

yes :) You can try this: Hit ESC to open the menu, click the progress tracker, move to the coop bit, click on that coop slot and you'll see all those coop missions. Every single one has two options, play and play in private. If you choose private, you can start it right away all by yourself.  :)
