So, I installed my first game on my new PC (Painkiller), the bloody disc keeps spinning periodically even after I finished playing the game.

Any suggestions, I havent played a PC game sine .... god .... Doom 3 I think.

"periodically" ... could be that something or you yourself check drives on your PC, happens if you open a file manager (something like windows explorer). If a disc is in the drive, it will start spinning so the operating system may read out what's in that drive.

It certainly can be - I'd remove the CD if not using it, however the best alternative is the nocd cracks that are readily available.  If the game is relatively new, it might not require the presence of the CD at all, even without a crack - all of the games I've installed recently do not require the CD because they require an online connection for their operation either through proprietary launcher or Steam.
