Top Documentary Films (read about it below this list)

Well, here my impressions regarding the four entries in the list I started the topic with:

I've spent most of the afternoon and evening watching films hosted on Culture Unplugged, especially right here: http://www.cultureunplugged.com/documentaries/watch-online/filmedia/index.php . It offers virtually everything you might want to watch (ok, apart form certain films, you pigs) ranging from documentaries to.. to.. actually I can't really say anything here without leaving important stuff out. It allows you to sort by many different options such as duration, region and of course genres. It sports film festivals and much more. Whoa  ??? :-X :)

So let me put it this way:

For the cheap adventure I browse http://youtube.com/ and once in a long while I find something good. Just mentioning it here because there actually are a few raw gems to be found if you know how to or if you are lucky.

For the occasional trip down the unknown stuff lane of usually quality films I check http://vimeo.com/ which usually doesn't disappoint but for my taste it has a little bit too many strange entries that drive me away plus the site owner's business policy and so on is a bit drastic regarding their own commercial benefits (they harvest you to the bones and give the data away if you're not careful -- I'd rather not register there)

For some extended documentary sessions I go check http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/ which offers LOADS of documentaries of all kinds. It has never disappointed and keeps sucking me back in and I keep spending a lot of time there. They don't host vids but collect links from all kinds of sources and revise their entries, kind of cool as they check all their documentaries and give you a summary and so on. Quality :)

And now I found http://www.cultureunplugged.com/ which kept me busy for hours on end and I've only scratched the surface. Take a look and prepare for a long session  :-()

my pleasure :)

I thought it might be useful to have it stickied since we tend to forget where something was. In particular those quite useful links. And to stick them together in one topic so we can actually find them later in the day  :-D

Guys, we're open to suggestions. Any cool (legal) video and film portals/sites will be added to the first post of this topic. :)

I may have mentioned Ted Talks before but worth mentioning on here where it's stickied.

http://www.ted.com/

There's some fairly interesting scientific, cultural and other egghead oriented videos if you can tolerate the average presenter's propensity towards the "Let's all jump on the greenie, kick down every borders bus and sing Kum Ba Ya while we await the future Socialist Utopia" BS mentality.  ::)

Sorry.  8-X  It's a good site but when science meets social programming and structural evolutionary engineering it's time to break out the shovels and disinfectant.  :-X

Thanks, mandru :) Now I'll keep an index of cool sites updated, check the first post again  :-D :-X

One of the reasons I stopped watching TV (other than the encroaching adverts) was the propensity for documentarys to start recapping everything discovered so far after each advert break - thus padding out what ended up being a thin programme in the first place.

It's good to see individuals not constrained by account execs and programming idiots. Cheers for the links.

rather enjoyable comment, Jim, and I fully agree with you :-() :-X I'm glad that you found something you like.

Currently I am quite fond of watching free lectures offered by the Gresham College in London which are to be found at http://www.gresham.ac.uk/
It's basically attending academic lectures while sitting comfortably at home.  :-D

QuoteGresham College has provided free public lectures for over 400 years. These have been released online in video and audio versions since the year 2000 and there are now over 1,000 lectures available online.
QuoteGresham College has provided free public talks within the City of London for over 400 years.
Founded in 1597, Gresham College is London's oldest Higher Education Institution. Our Gresham Professors and other visiting speakers offer over 100 free public events every year.

Nice people  :-X Funny how such lectures aren't widely known about - maybe curiosity is the true province of a scholar, to seek and be rewarded by what they find.

A good thought Jim as long as the scholar isn't intentionally seeking and tweaking their results to be close to the front of the line for rewards from a government or power base that is highly appreciative through largess of having their pet propaganda talking points scientifically supported.

I'm sure there's a special name and if Dante was anywhere near the mark a circle of hell for that type of scholar.  8-X

The name? Probably "opportunism" and "careerism" :)

QuoteThe phenomenon of intellectual opportunism is frequently associated by its critics with careerism and dubious, unprincipled self-promotion, where ideas become "just another commodity" or a "bargaining tool". When human knowledge becomes a tradeable good in a market of ideas, all sorts of opportunities arise for huckstering, swindling, haggling and hustling with information in ways which are regarded as unprincipled, dubious or involve deceit of some sort.

That's good Art.  :-X

I was personally thinking of something probably much cruder and with a snappier lilt.  >:D

:) well, I'm guessing the word Mandru was thinking of probably began with a 'c'...

what? A word that starts with C and ends in OCK makes you feel uncomfortable?

I know the church loves the word I had in mind.  :)

 :-() @ Art's reveal.

Uncomfortable?  No, it just wasn't the series of words in a direction I favored for naming the type of scientist who would cast aside truth (the whole point of science) to falsify or distort findings to promote their career.

Harlot is a lot closer but I wouldn't want to slur or insult by way of comparison any of the hard working members of that profession who may strive to deliver fair value.
