I've just come across this interesting forum discussion regarding the "On" position of light switch in different countries:

that discussion had one point from a Chinese that all of a sudden made sense to me: There is a little orange tap that indicates "on" -- I have one of those outside my bathroom. Because outside the bathroom you can't see whether the light is on or off when the door is shut, that orange light in the lower part (= down) of the rocker switch is clearly visible when "on." And I remember quite a few of those with a light in the lower part, never in the upper part. So we use down for on. :)

Art, I have no idea where "codswallop" comes from, other than that it's originally an English expression. It does sound like a good slap in the face with a wet fish :-()

I'd like to know where "balderdash" comes from too :-D
